Data Attack Pair Analysis

In GenIV, I created "Double Attack" and "Triple Attack" analysis. This is however, obsolete now that the type chart has changed. With the addition of Fairy as an attacking and defending type, as well as nerfs to Steel... it is time to redo my analysis.

The analysis is simple. There are not 18 types in the game... but instead 171 (theoretical) types in the game. The 171 types are Normal, Normal/Fire, Normal/Water, Normal/Ghost (etc. etc.) all the way to Dragon/Fairy. For every combination of attacks, I wrote a program to count up the total number of types that "Don't Resist" and "Are Weak against" a particular type combination. Abilities, such as Levitate or Flash Fire, were not taken into account however. So this analysis should only serve as a heuristic, a starting point for all trainers.

For example, the canonical attack combo "Electric / Ice" hits 68 types super-effective, and hits 168 types neutral or better.

Most of the staples of old remain the best. Ground / Ice has always had excellent offensive potential, and Fighting / Ghost has always been perfect (outside of the non-existant Normal/Ghost). Fighting / Ghost hits the top of non-resist list.

EdgeQuake makes it nearly to the top of both lists as expected, and Bolt/Beam is near the top of the "most neutrals" list.

Dragon / Fire has fallen from perfection however. Fairy / Water, Fairy / Fire, Fairy / Rock, and Fairy / Dragon all resist Dragon / Fire hard. However, outside of the UU Pokemon Azumarill and Carbink, these pokemon don't really exist. The offensive combo Dragon / Fire may be "theoretically walled" by these types... but this offensive core will probably do fine in the OU Metagame. IMO, the chart simply demonstrates one area where theory isn't going to match up with practice.

Dragon / Ghost has rose up in the charts, due to Steel's lack of resist. I don't know if any pokemon can take advantage of this... but it complements Dragon now.

The new type "Fairy" has a large number of combos that work with it. In theory, Fairy / Ground is the best, but with Skarmory being one of the most prolific pokemon, that "rogue" Steel / Flying type resists Fairy too hard. But aside from Skarmory, Fairy and Ground perfectly complement each other, Fairy hitting most types hard... with Ground backing up on Fairy's Poison / Steel resists.

Also remember, the above charts don't take Levitate into account. Bronzong will wall Fairy / Ground.

Fairy/Ghost and Fairy/Dark IMO will serve as a more important "offensive core" for Fairies. (Mega) Mawile Play Rough / Sucker Punch, (Mega) Gardevoir Moon Blast / Shadow Ball, and Togekiss Dazzling Gleam / Shadow Ball will hit hard. Remember: Jirachi, Metagross and Bronzong are now weak against both Ghost and Dark.

Again, "Attack Pairs" are most useful for defensive / support pokemon. Offensive Pokemon will likely use "Attack Triplets" as an offensive core, and I don't have a chart for that yet. Still, I think these charts will serve as a good starting point in our X / Y analysis.

I love this chart and I'm definitely going to use it. I guess this means Skarmory will see even more of a rise, and Bronzong could be a lot more used if it wasn't now weak to ghost and dark (steel doesn't resist dark now, right?)

Wow, I'm surprised how low Ice/Fire is on that list. I would have thought that's a fantastic offensive combo

Being walled by all Fire Pokemon and all Water Pokemon is a bad thing in theory.

Looking at Fairy / Ground once more, it seems like Granbull is a good candidate for this combo. 120 Atk, Earthquake / Play Rough. He has poor speed, but great resists. Granbull might see some UU Play. I wonder if any Ground Pokemon learn Play Rough? I feel like Fairy / Ground + Magnezone would be perfect. Magnezone takes care of both Skarmory / Bronzong, and your Fairy / Ground resists are gone. But I think we'll need to find a better pokemon than Granbull to actually execute this strategy...

------------------

Ground Poison is a major surprise to me to be anywhere near the top of either list. Again, Skarmory / Bronzong wall it hard, but Magnezone clears that problem right up. Are there any better physical Poison attacks than Poison Jab?

Nidoking / Nidoqueen + Probopass might work as a team in UU, but I'm not seeing very much OU potential with Ground/Poison.

Although 60 power, Azumarill does know Bulldoze, and it definitely could benefit from the speed drop. It also knows Dig, but Dig's even worse than Bulldoze.

This is a huge help! Thanks man! I've been thinking about the new cores for awhile now but you did all the work lol.

That maybe has some UU Potential, but nothing on the level of beasts like Shadow Ball / Focus Blast Gengar.

----------------------

Focusing on buffs, we have:
1. Poison (Fairy weakness)
2. Steel (Fairy Weakness)
3. Ghost (Loss of Steel Resist)
4. Dark (Loss of Steel Resist)

Poison combinations are looking interesting. I've mentioned Ground / Poison already, but the Water / Poison in Tentacruel will likely rise if any Fairies become a threat. Tentacruel is an especially useful "utility" pokemon, so it wants to run two attacks... and its either looking at the age-old Water/Ice combo, or its buffed Water / Poison double-STAB. Outside of mirror-match Tentacruel and Ferrothorn, Empoleon and Kabutops, Water/Poison seems to hit everything... and will wall break any fairy who might decide to try and wall Tentacruel.

And hell, Water / Ice is walled by Empoleon and Tentacruel anyway.

EDIT: Nevermind, 0 Sp. Atk Tentacruel Sludge Bomb does like 30% to Sp. Defensive Togekiss, who simply roosts off the damage. Perfect-accurate Toxic (thanks to Toxic Buff) probably would be the best attack to discourage walls in general.

It's still important to consider usage of Pokemon and to look at individual matchups. Bug/Ground is surprisingly high on the list, but the pokemon that can resist the combination can wall it completely. Flying types like Skarmory, for instance.

I wonder what happens to this chart if you run things like replacing the Ice type with Freeze Dry, or replacing Flying or Fighting with Flying Press... probably a niche thing, since Auroras and Hawlucha don't have the most amazing movepools, but worth knowing I guess.

I noticed Dark/Poison got significantly better this gen (leggo Skuntank!), and Dark/Poison/Ground is, if I'm not mistaken, unresisted.

Yeah guys because it's smart to talk about a Pokemon that we don't know has a type change or not.
The only type we've ever seen removed from a Pokemon was filler Normal-type. Pray for Steel/Fairy Jirachi as much as you want, but it's reasonable enough to assume it's still Steel/Psychic.

As expected, the introduction of Fairies has hurt the neutral coverage of Dark/Fighting. In BW, only a few things like Toxicroak and Heracross resisted the combo, but with the amount of play Azumarril and Togekiss may see, I'm starting to wonder if the dark coverage move will be dropped in favour of ghost attacks, which got buffed fairly hard and have no holes in neutral coverage as of now.

Most pokemon using Night Slash/Crunch have access to Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball is a good substitute for Dark Pulse. The added effects of the Dark Moves are probably better, and they won't be dropped if Dark has STAB or some other bonus (such as Mega Launcher Dark Pulse), but I can see it being a reasonable change depending on the impact Fairies will have in general teambuilding.

Quake-edge is still usefull as always by the looks of it considering its distribution. Water/Dragon and Water/Normal are still intresting combinations of moves.

Ice/Ground is a combo which i've never considered, though its resisted by surskit and the Steel/psyshic grouping (which is quite a draw back TBH, due to their sheer utility). Other then mamoswine, what other pokemon can abuse this combo?. Mamo has the earthquake down but its physical ice move (ice fang) has 65 BP (unless thats changed with gen change). Earthpower and Icebeam might become the new boltbeam but which pokemon can abuse it though.

Special attackers with Sheer Force or STAB on at one of those moves... like Nidoking last gen

Not all Steel/Psychics resist Ice/Ground... in fact, only Bronzong does due to Levitate

Not the whole grouping. Jirachi and Metagross are weak to Ground; Bronzong just avoids it because of Levitate.

As for Mamoswine, it traditionally uses Ice Shard and Icicle Crash nowadays, both excellent options.

The only type we've ever seen removed from a Pokemon was filler Normal-type. Pray for Steel/Fairy Jirachi as much as you want, but it's reasonable enough to assume it's still Steel/Psychic.
You can pray for a non-Fairy one all you want. Fact of the matter is that we simply do not know until December so you really shouldn't be mentioning it until then.

Rotom's Formes had one type changed and it wasn't Normal

When I was more active, I simply ran Blizzard / Earthquake on Life Orb Mamoswine back in Gen4. I used to run a Hail Team and abused the hell out of 100% accurate Blizzard. Blizzard LO Rhyperior also messed up a number of switch-ins.

There's nothing like killing Skarmory on the Switchin with Blizzard -> Ice Shard + Stealth Rocks dmg. Skarmory would normally wall the Mamo as he 3HKOs with Icicle Crash, but a surprise Blizzard on the switch-in does some ~67% dmg, enough for Stealth Rocks + Ice Shard to KO before Skarmory gets a chance to move

Life Orb Mamoswine with 140 EV Sp. Atk investment Blizzard OHKOs Hippowdon after Stealth Rocks. A slower Mixed-Attacker 252 Atk / 140 Sp. Atk Mamoswine generally hits harder with Blizzard against his Physical Walls. He's still walled by Bronzong of course, but a team usually builds their Swampert (I guess Gastrodon in Gen5) to be physically defensive, and are surprised by a 2HKO from Blizzard+Stealth Rocks. With the Blizzard Nerf however, its probably not going to be quite as good of a strategy, and it never was very good to begin with. But those who wish to build a "different" Mamoswine than standard (or lol Rhyperior), I'd suggest looking into it. 110 BP is still a lot of power, and is Mamoswine's best option against physical walls like Skarmory, Gastrodon and the like.

Anyway, people have been looking for Earth Power / Ice Beam for a while, but we always return to the classic Bolt/Beam because of its awesome distribution.
