Gen 1 Weezing (NU Partial Rewrite) [QC 1/1] [GP 0/1]

Plague von Karma

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]
At first glance, you wouldn't expect a Pokemon like Weezing to be so underwhelming. When you factor in its great bulk—as well as a solid offensive movepool featuring moves like Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, and Explosion—it does initially look quite serviceable. It's even one of only two Pokemon in the game with access to Sludge, giving it a decent Poison-type STAB move that lets it spread poison efficiently. Sludge can cripple a variety of wrappers such as Dragonair, Rapidash, and Pinsir, the latter of which is hit super effectively. Its Poison typing also helps guard your team against this, letting it switch in on Toxic to protect your own wrappers.

However, that's all the good things one can say about Weezing. Weezing's Speed and typing are awful; this means that most, if not all, of the metagame's big threats such as Mr. Mime, Nidoking, and Golem can answer it, possessing super effective coverage to invalidate its bulk while often being able to switch in comfortably. Ergo, Weezing is often a momentum sink. To add on to this, better Poison-types like Venomoth, Nidoking, and even Muk make it very hard for Weezing to find a spot on any competitive RBY NU team.

move 1: Explosion
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Hyper Beam / Sludge

[SET COMMENTS]
This is the best Weezing can muster; its movepool is deceptively shallow. Weezing has among the strongest Explosions in the tier, only being beaten out by Muk and Golem, allowing it to OHKO Mr. Mime, Rapidash, and Electrode, though the latter two aren't guaranteed. The combination of Fire Blast and Thunderbolt lets Weezing hit almost the entire tier for at least neutral damage; Fire Blast is of particular note for giving Weezing an answer to Exeggcute, while Thunderbolt 2HKOes Poliwhirl and Flying-types like Fearow and Aerodactyl. The last moveslot is largely subjective; Hyper Beam KOes Mr. Mime and Raticate from around half HP, while Sludge is more reliable while coming with a very high poison chance.

While its movepool is tiny, Weezing can be customized to some degree. Thunder can be used for a boost in power at the cost of consistency, letting Weezing 2HKO Blastoise, Charizard, Kabutops, and Seadra. While Weezing is efficient at spreading status thanks to Fire Blast and Sludge, Toxic is a valid option to consistently prevent wrappers like Dragonair, Rapidash, and Charizard from taking over games. Finally, Rest can theoretically give more bang for your buck with Weezing's bulk, but its defensive typing makes it difficult to actually wake up. Weezing is best used on offensive teams that can benefit from the holes its Explosion tears in teams; thus, Pokemon like Moltres and Kingler make good partners. Additionally, a Pokemon that can remove Golem such as Blastoise or Seadra can help; otherwise, Weezing tends to let it in for free. Even when Weezing benefits teams, Muk is often superior for its access to Body Slam and a stronger Explosion.

Hey! I am here to QC Weezing!

that lets it spread poison efficiently.
I think explaining why this is important is necessary, as in most RBY tiers Poison is quite mediocre/bad. NU is different, but most people wont know why.

However, that's all the good things one can say about Weezing. Weezing's Speed and typing are awful
I think somewhere within the analysis, its worth mentioning that Weezing can switch in on Toxic for free and threaten Toxic users with Poison (like if Rapidash clicks Toxic on a Blastoise to support a fellow Fire, Weezing can come in and potentially spread Poison on a miss).

allowing it to OHKO Mr. Mime and Dragonair
Weezing Explosion vs. Electrode: 290-341 (89.7 - 105.5%) -- 35.9% chance to OHKO
Weezing Explosion vs. Rapidash: 290-341 (87 - 102.4%) -- 15.4% chance to OHKO

I propose placing these over Dragonair, since Rapidash is alr going to be mentioned earlier so the connection is alr made, and Electrode doesnt have PT bullshit to ignore Boom like Nair and Rap can.

Despite clearing the opponent's status, Haze can be used to stop Poliwhirl and Kingler from setting up, which can otherwise be a game-ending scenario.
Is there a turn where clicking Haze is better than clicking Thunderbolt/Thunder or Explosion? Poliwhirl will just outspeed you and hit you with Psychic anyways, and Kingler outspeeds you and can either just continue to setup Swords Dance since you dont threaten consistent paralysis, and can simply +2 Body Slam into HBeam or can BSlam into BSlam into HBeam, etc etc. Message me on Discord if im forgetting something.

Finally, while Weezing is efficient at spreading status thanks to Fire Blast and Sludge, Toxic is a valid option for a consistent method of preventing wrappers like Dragonair, Rapidash, and Charizard from taking over games. Finally, Rest can theoretically give more bang for your buck with Weezing's bulk, but its defensive typing makes it difficult to actually wake up.
Double "Finally", remove the first one.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that's all I have to say on Weezing, msg me on Discord when this is implemented and i'll likely QC.

Edit: QC 1/1

At first glance, you wouldn't expect a Pokemon like Weezing to be so underwhelming. When you factor in its great defensive bulk — as bulk—as well as a solid offensive movepool featuring moves like Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, and Explosion—it (removed spaces before and after dash) does initially look quite serviceable. It's even one of only two Pokemon in the game with access to Sludge, giving it a decent Poison-type STAB move that lets it spread poison efficiently. (comma -> period) crippling Sludge can cripple a variety of wrappers such as Dragonair, Rapidash, and Pinsir, the latter of which is hit super effectively thanks to RBY's type chart. Its Poison typing also helps guard your team against this, switching letting it switch in on Toxic to protect your own wrappers.

However, that's all the good things one can say about Weezing. Weezing's Speed and typing are awful; this means that most, if not all, of the metagame's big threats such as Mr. Mime, Nidoking, and Golem have answers for can answer it, possessing super effective coverage to invalidate its bulk while often being able to switch in comfortably. Ergo, Weezing can often be seen as is often ("little more than" is an optional addition, if that's what was meant) a momentum sink. To add on to this, better Poison-types like Venomoth, Nidoking, and even Muk make it very hard for Weezing to find a spot on any competitive RBY NU team.
