VGC VGC16 RayOgreCott

Hi guys! Sardus21 here.I am here to share with you this team of mine since I've been working on it from the beginning of the format, because I want to take a little more seriously on VGC competitions during this year.Hope you enjoy it!

Teambuilding Process:

Kyogre was my first mon,due to the fire power of its attacks, and to its sort of antimeta role (against groudon).

Rayquaza was successively added to support Kyogre and let it fire its powerful water attacks without worries thanks to Air Lock/Delta Stream and to offer amazing offense in general, with a double-mega option.

Whimsicott was an amazing addition due to his support moves, offering speed control and disruption, and being the third mon of my core.

Gengar was added for its trapping abilities, and I really wanted to try the WhimsiGar lead combination.Furthermore,I really needed a Xerneas check.

Next mon was Lando-T,I knew I wanted to take even better on Primal Groudon since it can completely ruin Kyogre's day.

Finally,I picked Thundurus as the last member of the team, due to his multiple ways to support the other mons.

Team as a glance:

Team in depth:

Kyogre-Primal @ Blue Orb
Ability: Primordial Sea
Level: 50
EVs: 140 HP / 12 Def / 188 SpA / 4 SpD / 164 Spe
Timid Nature
- Water Spout
- Origin Pulse
- Ice Beam
- Protect

The star of the team. Why Water Spout Kyogre and not Eruption Groudon?Because Water Spouts coming from a 180 base SpAtk are too good to pass up,and with this spread has a good chance to OHKO 4 HP/ 0 Def Mega Kangaskhan while resisting effectively her assaults.Speed is also really good to speed creep max speed neutral natured base 90s,other than max speed Adamant Landorus-T reaching 144 points.

Origin Pulse acts as a safe STAB when HP are low,but still hits really hard especially in Rain.I sincerely don't complain about its accuracy because is still more accurate than Hydro Pump, and you all know what I mean.

Ice Beam offers coverage in general, other than a safe move to use when I fear a P-don switch-in,but also to hit super effectively some pesky grass types like opposing Whimsicotts.

Calcs:

188 SpA Primal Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Mega Kangaskhan in Heavy Rain: 178-211 (98.3 - 116.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 140 HP / 12 Def Primal Kyogre: 162-191 (83.9 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

188 SpA Primal Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas in Heavy Rain: 180-213 (89.5 - 105.9%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO

188 SpA Primal Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Primal Groudon in Heavy Rain: 780-916 (445.7 - 523.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO (sorry,I really wanted to put this)

188 SpA Primal Kyogre Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Primal Groudon: 68-81 (32.8 - 39.1%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO -> And this is why I need chip damage

Rayquaza-Mega @ Lum Berry
Ability: Delta Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Ascent
- Overheat
- Extreme Speed
- Protect

Now this.A max speed/max attack rayquaza is fantastic.

Even in normal form hits really hard with Dragon Ascent at least 2HKOing a big part of the tier (most of all Kangaskhan/Xerneas/Groudon),let alone when is in its mega form.

Extreme Speed is necessary priority,to finish some opponent with a few HP or to avoid random Sucker Punches.

Now why Overheat on a physical set with - nature? Because it erases the biggest threat for my team,Ferrothorn, even with a Jolly nature (I didn't want to compromise its decent bulk).

Lum Berry is my item of choice because ray really despises any form of status, especially burns/paralysis.

Its abilities also offer fantastic utility for the team, removing flying type weaknesses (Delta Stream) or erasing other weathers (Air Lock) and most importantly letting Kyogre fire its powerful water assaults.

Some calcs:

252 Atk Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Mega Kangaskhan: 132-156 (72.9 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Primal Groudon: 88-105 (50 - 59.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Xerneas: 136-162 (67.6 - 80.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Primal Kyogre: 144-169 (82.2 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As you can see, everyone of these 2HKO can help me removing a threat by double targeting or chip damaging it.

Whimsicott @ Focus Sash
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fake Tears
- Encore
- Tailwind
- Worry Seed

This is the third member of the core, and a really useful one.Evs are really simple, max speed and HP. As you can understand, the aim of the core is helping kyogre nuking things,so let's go on his wonderful support moves!

Worry Seed is a real gem, removing pesky abilities like Desolate Land, Parental Bond and so on.

Since 4/6 of the team are special attackers Fake Tears is wonderful to let them attack in a much more powerful way.

Tailwind is my needed speed control (Fast Water Spout is amazing).

Encore is fantastic in general for disrupting opponents, but especially in combination with my next mon:

Gengar-Mega @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Disable
- Protect

It's a trap! Gengar is here to offer good utility, trapping pesky mons and checking xerneas with his poison attacks.

Double STAB let Gengar hit a big part of the meta (Ghost STAB is good by itself, and Ghost/Poison coverage is nice neutral coverage on most things) and is a force to be reckoned with as his special attacks hit really hard, especially when used in combination with Whimsicott's Fake Tears. When other mons are at -2,can sometimes just OHKO without a second thought.

Speaking of Whimsicott, we have the well known combo of Encore+Disable. The evil incarnate. But Disable offers much more, disrupting my opponent and removing some useful moves (especially Sucker Punches).

Evs are really too simple, if someone has a good spread to suggest I would be really happy
.

Calcs:

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. -2 252 HP / 4 SpD Mega Kangaskhan: 154-183 (72.6 - 86.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Primal Groudon: 75-88 (36.2 - 42.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. -2 252 HP / 4 SpD Primal Groudon: 150-177 (72.4 - 85.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. -2 4 HP / 0 SpD Primal Groudon: 150-177 (85.2 - 100.5%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 158-188 (78.6 - 93.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. -2 252 HP / 4 SpD Giratina: 236-278 (91.8 - 108.1%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Giratina-O: 134-162 (52.1 - 63%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As you can see,at -2 (Fake Tears support) Gengar just obliterates most of the meta.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Earth Power
- Stone Edge
- Sludge Bomb
- Protect

Lando needs a bit of explanation. Why special? I wanted a ground type special attacker to better check Groudon but I still wanted Intimidate, so Lando-T was my pick.

Life Orb is really the only item I wanted for him in order to inflict good damage.

STAB Earth Power hits quite hard in general, and is baked by Stone Edge to better check Flying types like Ho-oh or Talonflame. Sludge Bomb is a little tech that lets me check Xerneas a little better.

I often get it on the field with Gengar or Whimsicott, for trapping and eliminating things or just nuking someting at -2 with Life Orb Earth Power.

Don't forget that still forms a formidable core with Thundurus (the famigerate Double Genie core) but also with Mega Ray,since he appreciates his 4x weakness to Ice being removed.

Calcs:

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Earth Power vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Primal Groudon: 190-226 (107.9 - 128.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Primal Groudon: 190-226 (91.7 - 109.1%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 156 SpD Primal Groudon: 159-190 (76.8 - 91.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

All guaranted OHKO at -2.

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Sludge Bomb vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 117-140 (58.2 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Sludge Bomb vs. -2 0 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 234-278 (116.4 - 138.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0- Atk Life Orb Landorus-T Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Ho-Oh: 265-312 (124.4 - 146.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0- Atk Life Orb Landorus-T Stone Edge vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Talonflame: 322-380 (209 - 246.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0- Atk Life Orb Landorus-T Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Yveltal: 127-151 (54.5 - 64.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Not bad,huh?

Thundurus @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Taunt
- Thunder Wave
- Role Play

Thundurus was mostly filler, but is still fantastic for the support he offers.

Thunderbolt is STAB and is also useful to check opposing Kyogres, but also Flying types like the rising Yveltal.Even with only 4 evs invested, still hits for good amounts of damage thanks to his high base SpA.

Taunt is REALLY useful to check Trick Room but also to prevent Xerneas to get that Geomancy boost.,and in general for disrupting the opponent.

Thunder Wave is here for a secondary form of speed control, especially useful when Whimsicott is out of the field and I need o hit fast.

Role Play lets me mantain Primordial Sea/Delta Stream without any worries.Delta Stream Thundy is really good,as he has no weaknesses in Strong Winds

I chose Sitrus Berry as the item in order to have a little form of recovery and an ev spread totally invested in SpDef due to the multitude of special attacks in the format.

Calcs:

4 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Yveltal: 126-150 (54 - 64.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

4 SpA Thundurus Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Primal Kyogre: 84-98 (40.5 - 47.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Not much, but still something if I need to get some damage.

Defensively:

252+ SpA Primal Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus in Heavy Rain: 168-198 (90.3 - 106.4%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Primal Kyogre Origin Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus in Heavy Rain: 123-145 (66.1 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Primal Groudon Eruption (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus in Harsh Sun: 145-172 (77.9 - 92.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Turboblaze Kyurem-W Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus: 161-191 (86.5 - 102.6%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

These are some of the most fearsome special attacks in the tier.

-1 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Thundurus: 135-160 (72.5 - 86%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This is why I need Intimidate.

So, this is the team! Hope you enjoyed it.

As you can see, I am really weak to Ferrothorn but also against trick room teams.

Anyway,thank you for your attention!

Helping hand offers better results for spread Dmg than Fake Tears, check:

252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Helping Hand Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 156 SpD Primal Groudon: 242-283 (116.9 - 136.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Similar results and it allow you do moar spread damage, not focusing in one target like FTears do.

Protect imo its a better option over Worry seed if u have Sash.

Ev spread, I suggest spread im testing with 252Hp/40 Sp def/216 Speed

216 Speed EVs allow Whimsicott to outspeed Taunt opposing maximum Speed Thundurus before it Taunts Whimsicott
Hmm, and Naive Thundy >> Timid for your Set, and here is appreciated Helpind Hand over Fake Tears too, check:

4- Atk Life Orb Landorus-T Helping Hand Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 0- Def Yveltal: 213-252 (91.4 - 108.1%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

I recommend switching thunder to a n offensive set. In this meta game, thundys bulk is no longer acceptable. Going offensive also helps your matchup with other kyogre

His calcs were for when groudon wasn't at -2. At -2 Earth Power does more than with Helping Hand
252 SpA Life Orb Landorus-T Earth Power vs. -2 252 HP / 156 SpD Primal Groudon: 320-377 (154.5 - 182.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Also imo if using special Landorus I think Landorus-I does a better job
