Vaporeon (Analysis)

ya, the biggest question i have is if whirlpool's effect still lasts when the user switches out b&w, if the effect doesn't last then the whole plan is flawed... but if they changed that in b&w then I would use it to ploy in an enemy and then set up my sweeper.

so does anyone know if whirlpool still keeps its effects when you baton-pass?

whirlpool

Whirlpool's Power and Accuracy were increased to 35 and 85, and now lasts for four to five turns. In addition, if the user of Whirlpool is holding a Pressure Band, it inflicts 1/8 of the target's maximum HP instead of 1/16 when the target is trapped.

this is even more interesting, but I still haven't found out if it still works when vaporeon baton passes.

but now you can even consider having a vaporeon with toxic and whirlpool holding a pressure band, so just stall and heal with wish and the enemy can't escape.

Pressure Band is terrible, you use trapping moves for their ability to trap, not for their ability to do damage. Also, since you can no longer Baton Pass Mean Look/Spider Web, I'm assuming it doesn't work when you Baton Pass Whirlpool/those types of trapping moves. Even so, Whirlpool isn't helping Vaporeon beat any of its counters. You Whirlpool as they switch in a counter and you're stuck with switching Vaporeon out or forcing it to take massive amounts of damage.

Not to sound nitpicky, but is it even possible for Vaporeon to learn Whirlpool anymore, seeing as it was an HM last Gen and all...?

Actually, no. You can't move Pokemon that know HM moves from Gen4 to Gen5 via the PokeShifter. So it's not possible at all to have a Gen5 Vaporeon that knows Whirlpool unless it appears through the Dream World somehow.

Aha, that's right. No HMs. But who cares really, nothing Vaporeon will really miss.

Dream World section should be listed in Optional Changes; DW section is for unreleased DW abilities only.

How big is Vaporeon's SpD in the Wish Support set?

With Wish's new mechanics along with Vaporeon's massive HP stat, Vaporeon can really help out the benefit your team by healing off any damage that your team may have taken. Furthermore, Vaporeon got a new nifty nifty new toy in Boiling Water, allowing her to burn unsuspecting physical sweepers. She can still utilize her Baton Passing capabilities with Acid Armor, Aqua Ring, and her new move Cheer Up. However, because of the stronger opponents that exist in the fifth generation, as well as more Pokémon that can hit Vaporeon hard like such as Virizion and Thundurus as well as older Pokémon such as Breloom, Vaporeon will have difficulty walling to her full capabilities. Furthermore In addition, she is susceptible to all forms of entry hazard damage. Vaporeon is in for a tough time, but with help from her teammates as well as the new tools she can utilize exploit, she is fully capable of doing her job well.

[SET]
name: Wish Support
move 1: Boiling Water
move 2: Wish
move 3: Protect
move 4: Roar / Ice Beam / Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Bold
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set utilizes two of the fifth generation's gifts to Vaporeon. With a defensive EV spread, Vaporeon can tank many different multiple hits from opposing enemies Pokémon. Boiling Water serves as Vaporeon's STAB move and has a handy 30% chance of burning the opposing Pokémon. which This is great for crippling physically-based Pokémon that try to switch into her for free. Wish heals 50% of the HP of the Pokémon that used it an amount equal to 50% of Vaporeon's HP to a teammate. That, combined with Vaporeon's large HP stat, means that she will be healing much of your team for at least 50%. Protect serves as both a scouting move and to ensure that Vaporeon gets healed by her ownWish.

There are several options for the last moveslot. Roar is the primary choice because Ferrothorn loves coming in on Vaporeon. By predicting correctly, Vaporeon can Roar out Ferrothorn and cause more entry hazard damage. Vaporeon can phaze out her counters - such as Ferrothorn - and cause extra residual damage. Ice Beam is there for Garchomp, Haxorus, Breloom, and any other Pokémon that resist Boiling Water or don't take too much from it. Finally, Toxic, in conjunction with Protect, enables Vaporeon to stall out many different Pokémon Pokémon that it walls. However, this may clash with the burn chance from Boiling Water and as such, Surf can be used as Vaporeon's STAB attack.

[Additional Comments]

Haze can be used in the last spot also for those last Pokémon situations, but generally Roar is better since it forces them out. Hidden Power Electric can be used to hit Gyarados but only scratches other Water-type Pokémon due to its low base power. Additionally, those Water-type Pokémon are crippled more by Toxic. Heal Bell can be used for Vaporeon to be the ultimate team supporter: one that both removes status and heals away any damage taken.

Due to Vaporeon's inability to really hurt Ferrothorn, he can come switch in and begin setting up entry hazards very easily without trouble. Skarmory does a similar job except he utilizes uses Roost instead to recover off damage from Boiling Water, rather than resisting it. Excadrill is a helpful good choice to remove entry hazards with Rapid Spin, as he is immune to Electric-type attacks. Vaporeon can also switch in to into Fire- and Water-type attacks aimed at Excadrill. Breloom and Virizion can be dangerous also if Vaporeon doesn't catch them on the switch with Ice Beam. Gliscor is a great counter for both of them as he has Poison Heal to make him immune to Spore, has the Defense to take their attacks, and can hit them back with a STAB Acrobat.

With Gliscor in mind, Ferrothorn also serves as a good partner. Vaporeon can easily take the Fire-type attacks aimed at Ferrothorn while whilst Ferrothorn can handle both the Electric- and Grass-type moves headed towards Vaporeon's way. Ferrothorn can also lay down entry hazards which Vaporeon can abuse with Roar. Heatran is also an option to scare away Grass-type Pokémon like such as Ferrothorn. Vaporeon can also easily handle absorb the Water-type attacks aimed at Heatran.

[SET]
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Baton Pass
move 2: Substitute
move 3: Acid Armor / Wish / Aqua Ring
move 4: Boiling Water / Roar
item: Leftovers
nature: Bold
evs: 244 HP / 132 Def / 128 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Not only can Vaporeon take advantage of her large HP stat to pass Wishes but ; she can also use it to pass large huge Substitutes to her teammates on a Baton Pass chain. That, combined with her large movepool of boosting moves support movepool, enables her to fit many different roles. Baton Passing Acid Armor is a good way to patch up her inferior Defense stat, while whilst Wish allows Vaporeon and her team to make create more Substitutes. The same goes for Aqua Ring: it slowly heals off any damage from generating Substitutes that your team may have taken whilst adding some continuous recovery to the team.. The final moveslot is to stop other Pokémon from stopping breaking your Baton Pass chain. Boiling Water hits Taunters and whilst any burns it may inflict makes make it harder for the opposing Pokémon a physical Pokémon to break Vaporeon's Substitute. Roar can outspeed opposing phazers and phaze them out instead first Roar can be used to phaze away most phazers before Vaporeon is phazed away herself.

[Additional Comments]

The given EVs maximize Vaporeon's Baton Passing capabilities. 128 Speed EVs enables enable Vaporeon to outspeed positive-natured base 130s with +2 Speed. 132 Defense EVs gives give a jump point with the given Bold nature while whilst 244 HP enables Vaporeon to make the largest HP Substitutes she can while not being entry hazard weak. Additionally, at +4 Defense, Ferrothorn can't break Vaporeon's Substitutes with a 0 Attack Power Whip. Vaporeon can also Baton Pass Cheer Up but generally Baton Pass receivers are either physically or specially based so they don't have to split EVs.

Gliscor and Celebi are great partners for Vaporeon because they resist or are immune to Electric-type and Grass-type moves attacks and Celebi also resists grass-type moves (Gliscor does not resist Grass...). Gliscor can also Taunt to stop opposing Taunters or phazersfrom ruining your Baton Pass chain. Zapdos is also an acceptable choice because it resists Grass-type moves and can Baton Pass both Agility and Substitutes. whilst Roosting off any damage taken. It can also Roost off any damage. Espeon is a handy partner because she can use Magic Mirror to bounce back phazing moves, Taunt, and status-inflicting moves. He She I thought Espeon was female, feel free to ignore me on this one... also has the ability to Calm Mind and keep the Baton Pass chain running. Smeargle can pass anything you want, from Ingrain to Shell Break to Gear Change.

As for a receiver, Metagross is a good choice as always. It has Clear Body so it he can't be affected by Intimidate, has a Steel-typing so it's he's immune to Toxic Spikes, and has powerful moves such as Meteor Mash and Earthquake. Lucario is also another potential choice except he's frailer than Metagrossbut is still immune to Toxic spikes.

[Team Options]

Teams that are weak to Fire-, Water-, and Ice-type attacks will love Vaporeon's resistances and her Wish passing capabilities. Vaporeon, combined with Gliscor and Ferrothorn, form a great defensive core because of their great fantastic (Repetition) synergy together. Gliscor can also use STAB Acrobat and Earthquake to handle any Pokémon that Vaporeon may have trouble with while whilst Ferrothorn can lay down entry hazards, making it harder for your opponent to break through this core. Additionally, Ferrothorn appreciates Wish because he doesn't have lacks reliable recovery.

A more offensive way to handle Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon are is to use Heatran and the various Dragon-type Pokémon. Heatran can scorch Grass-types Pokémon with his STAB moves while Vaporeon can absorb any Water-type attacks directed at it. Garchomp can hit Electric-type Pokémon with a STAB Earthquake while whilst Vaporeon can easily switch in to into an Ice Beam. Scizor is also a useful partner because he can hit Grass-type Pokémon with a STAB U-turn and tank 4x resisted Grass-type attacks. Vaporeon in turn can sponge Fire-type attacks and pass Wish to heal off any entry hazard damage.

Vaporeon really dislikes Toxic Spikes because of the gradual residual damage it brings. Forretress has good defensive synergy with Vaporeon and can Rapid Spin away entry hazards. He can also lay down his own entry hazards. Excadrill is a more offensive version Rapid Spinner as he is capable of KOing many spinblockers easily. With Roar on Vaporeon's side, she also appreciates entry hazard support. Forretress, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn can all reliably set up entry hazards so to slowly wear down the opposing team.

[Optional Changes]

Surf may be used over Boiling Water for more power but you lose the very useful burn chance. A Choice Specs set combined with Vaporeon's often unnoticed base 110 Special Attack is plausible, but it gets walled easily by Ferrothorn. If you decide to use Hidden Power Fire, Vaporeon has difficulty with Water-type Pokémon. If you use Hidden Power Electric, Vaporeon once again has trouble with Ferrothorn.

[Counters]

Ferrothorn loves switching in on Vaporeon, as he can use Leech Seed which,in conjunction with Vaporeon's massive HP stat will heal huge amounts of damage the he may have taken.to heal away any damage he may have taken. From there, he can freely set up entry hazards or attack with Power Whip. Skarmory can also come in easily because of Roost but getting burned reduces will severely hamper his walling capabilities. Shaymin, Breloom, Virizion, Thundurus, Zapdos, and many other Pokémon all can come in on Vaporeon and hit her with a super effective STAB attack. Latios doesn't mind coming in on an Ice Beam because of his massive Special Defense. From there, he can freely launch Draco Meteors.

Without Roar, Vaporeon has trouble with boosting Pokémon. Jirachi and Espeon can both utilize Calm Mind and Wish to slowly boost up in front of Vaporeon. Jirachi's Steel typing means it's immune to Toxic while Espeon has Magic Mirror to bounce it back Toxic. Reuniclus has Magic Guard so he's immune to entry hazards and Toxic and can Calm Mind in front of Vaporeon also. Virizion can also Calm Mind and use Giga Drain to heal off any damage it may have taken. Roobushin can use Bulk Up and Drain Punch to set up and doesn't mind a burn either due to Guts. Both Blissey and Chansey can come in and put Vaporeon to a dead stop as Vaporeon can't break either of them. They can also use Toxic to reduce Vaporeon's walling capabilities and have Natural Cure, Aromatherapy, and Heal Bell to rid themselves of Toxic status.

[Dream World]

Hydration is only useful if you bring along Politoed also pack a Politoed, as Politoed can set up rain due thanks to his ability Drizzle. With Hydration, Vaporeon is best used on a stall team centralized around rain. With rain automatically removing any statuses status inflicted on Vaporeon, he no longer has to fear about Toxic. It also removes the sleep status that Vaporeon succumbs to when using Rest. With it, Vaporeon can boost his Defense using Acid Armor, stall using Toxic, and hit any Pokemon immune to Toxic with Boiling Water. An EV spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD with a Calm nature achieves the best overall defenses after at least one Acid Armor boost. Unfortunately, Wish is incompatible with Hydration, meaning Vaporeon cannot support his teammates as well. Additionally, Vaporeon shares the same weaknesses with Politoed, so one must be careful about switching.

This all looks good, just a few issues with the wording and I have made it sound a lot better.

Actually, no. You can't move Pokemon that know HM moves from Gen4 to Gen5 via the PokeShifter. So it's not possible at all to have a Gen5 Vaporeon that knows Whirlpool unless it appears through the Dream World somehow.
I'm not sure but DPPt doesn't count Whirlpool as HM.

hmm that is interesting, I wonder if it is possible to have whirlpool then. Whirlpool + toxic + protect + wish=equals a deadly stall

Edited to reflect Scald > Boiling Water.

Also please stop suggesting the use of Whirlpool + Toxic. There's a reason why Mean Look + Toxic isn't viable, and it's not because not many Pokemon get Mean Look. It's because when you do manage to switch something in and Whirlpool it, it'll usually be something that forces Vaporeon out anyway. The only factor of that that's removed is double switching, but that Pokemon could always predict the switch out and attack with a different move. Additionally, it does NOTHING to help out against Ferrothorn, whereas at least Scald has a chance to burn it and cripple its offensive capabilities.

Vaporeon's SpD is 228 on the Wish set.

mean look doesn't hurt the enemy inbetween turns, thats why i am considering it. I don't care if you don't like it, don't post it, but this is a thread to discuss possibilities and I have questions for different unique possibilities that haven't been tried. I still haven't gotten an affirmative answer if whirlpool can be batton passed, I don't think it can though.

Tried to spruce up some of the repetitive language, but focused mainly on legibility, grammar usage, and ease of reading.
The article referred to Vaporeon as "she/her" in the beginning, but near the end started using the masculine "he/his" pronouns, so I fixed that as well.

I have posted a GP check above, sorry for the double post but I just wanted to notify you so you can implement the changes.

Don't call Vaporeon a her no matter how feminine you think it is; seven out of eight Vaporeon are male. Let's just call it "it" like the 4th gen analysis for Vaporeon.

You may use the pronoun "who" instead of "which" or "that" and use "he" or "she" to refer to Pokemon as people if you so desire. It must be consistent for the entire article or analysis if this is done, however.
these pronouns add dimension to the analysis by allowing for clear distinction between the "its" referring to Vaporeon and the other, numerous "its" used throughout

Changes made, thanks elDino and guddagudda. Also made the change to Work Up.

1 more GP check whenever you guys feel like it.

As for the gender, it's how the writer views it. As long as the writer stays consistent, it's fine. I didn't write the 4th gen Vaporeon analysis otherwise I would've used she. Besides, who looks at it and thinks "that's a male Pokemon?". It's too cute to be male.

Vaporeon can really benefit your team by healing off any damage that it may have taken.

Well, it's not consistent here. Here it's it.

You can call Vaporeon a girl, after all, Chikorita has the same gender ratio, and Chikorita and Eevee only be female in PMD1.

"it" refers to the term "team" in this instance, or else i would have said "she"

Yeh, I kept the Pokémon as "she" throughout my check too as that's how supermarth had referred to Vaporeon during the analysis. It's perfectly fine to have Vaporeon called a "she", it has those girly eyes...
