The World Cup of Pokemon 2023 - Qualifying

With the first round of the World Cup of Pokémon on the horizon, it is time for its qualifier. 17 total teams wish to enter this tournament and play on the big stage, but only three can make it in. Will we see some change, or will the old order prevail? Let's find out!


Format:

Teams consist of eight starters, four substitutes, and two captains. All games will be played in SV OU.

In the new qualifier format, each team will play 16 games in a preliminary Round Robin. The team that wins the Round Robin will automatically qualify for the World Cup of Pokémon, while seeds 2 through 5 will enter playoffs, from which two more teams will qualify. (The 2nd seed will pick their opponent between the 4th and 5th seeds, with 3rd seed playing the other.)

Tiebreakers

Any ties for 1st-2nd or 5th-6th will be broken by additional bo3 tiebreaker series at the end of the Round Robin if necessary.

If there is a tie for seeding within the 2nd-5th places, it will instead be broken by the strength of schedule (SoS) of the teams involved. Due to the asymmetric nature of these pairings, teams will not have strictly equal schedules; whichever team faced opponents that finished with the better overall record will take the higher seed in that case.
Should SoS also be tied, the teams will be considered fully tied and the higher seed will be drawn at random.

SoS may also be used liberally by the hosts as a last resort to avoid any situations that may potentially result in indefinite tiebreakers (eg. a 3-way tiebreak that repeatedly ties). Such situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Substitution:

This year we have four subs per roster, and Captains may use them as they see fit. Keep in mind once a player is subbed out, they cannot be subbed back into the same round.

Substitutions will be not be allowed in tiebreak series unless both teams agree (or TDs enforce double sub). We will be reluctant to give activity wins to those who are clearly fishing for them.

Deadlines:

All battles are to be completed by Sunday, May 21st, 2023 at 11:59 pm GMT-7. Battles that are not completed will be reviewed for activity and have a winner declared accordingly. If both parties are at fault, the game will simply not count in deciding final standing. Activity calls will not be made before the round is over.
