Hmm the chronology is bit murky here since I got into DPP UU and IRC over the same summer (and over three years ago). I think my first IRC friend was august and I hung out a lot with FolgorioTehKickAss on Shoddy.

Favorite battling moment (your own and a one you've spectated) ?

I suppose my own battling moment would be when I won that DPP OU tournament (honestly for lack of a better choice), but a very honorable mention goes to when New User Whistle smashed the legendary Eo Ut Mortus on ladder with the help of an incredibly lucky HeYsUpKeN. It was the first time I beat a "name" player so I was really excited. Got absolutely outplayed, just critical hit everything.

Spectator moment is definitely winning SPL 3… ~ALPHA RUINED~

Where does Noelle (your irc name) come from?

Can’t remember for sure, I saw it somewhere one day and decided it was a better gimmick name than whatever I was using at the time. I’ll use it until I get tired of it or find a better one…

Do you ever see yourself playing Starcraft 2 competitively?

Never. I have a lot of fun playing it now and I don’t need to add the stress of competitions. It’s also a dead-end career that isn’t even self-supporting for 99% of the professional players out there.

-Thoughts on the BW metagame(s)? Like BW OU, UU, etc.

I haven’t played it much but BW seems like trash. Coinflips everywhere before you even start the battle, team reveal changes prediction in a way that I dislike, too many threats to properly cover. Then again, almost all of the BW that I played came before any bans were made, so there’s probably a pretty big bias here.

-DPP UU: 10/10 Metagame or a A+ metagame?

-If you could change ONE THING about SC2, what would you change?

Templar Archives unlocks both DT and HT tech instead of just HT. Not a big change but I don’t have any realistic balance changes I could make, and my problems with race design are much larger than a single change.

-Should I get into the SC2 scene? I was forced into playing SC1 shortly before SC2 was released because of my friends and I really sucked at it.

I don’t remember, I basically spammed all the top end colleges with a few safeties. I picked UC because I was hooked by its reputation for intellectual curiosity and it hasn’t disappointed.

How many majors have you had and which one lasted the shortest amount of time?

I’ve officially declared four (biology, economics, chemistry, math) and obviously the first two are now gone. I guess that makes biology the most short-lived declared major since economics sort of lives on in my math specialization.

What were you doing with your life before?

I feel as if when you first started playing UU on the ladder, you watched a lot of ladder matches too? Am I remembering this correctly? If so, why'd you enjoy watching matches?

Yeah I did, the simplest reason is that on Shoddy it was a way to hang out with some friends while having fun, sort of like a Pokemon nerd’s version of going to a sports game. I bet we even came off as really obnoxious to the opponents, too. Watching battles also helps you improve as a battler because the perspective shift lets you view things more objectively, and I love seeing new sets and concepts used.

What has been the craziest, most insane game that you've ever had on starcraft II? What happened?

PvT on Daybreak--I expand, he tries to reactor/tech lab 2 rax but doesn’t pull SCVs so I hold handily. He expands while doing this and we both transition into standard games. Unfortunately I cut a few too many units while doing a tricky rangeless colossus into upgrades and templar build and he gets to kill my entire army and some probes. A little bit later he exploits protoss immobility to simultaneously drop four medivacs in my base and stim the other half of his army towards my third. I lose my main nexus but kill most of his other army for free, nothing else dies in my main so it’s actually a decent trade for me. We trade armies a few times with the engagements going my way due to storm until he decides he’s had enough, loads his entire army into medivacs and doom drops my main. Probably one of the most coin flippy moves you can pull in SC2 to be honest, it’s basically like setting up your late-game sweeper turn 5 in the face of a Pokemon that can OHKO and hoping your opponent overpredicts. Anyways since I’ve had better engagements in the midgame I’m banking a ton of money so I destroy his natural and main while making a ton of pylons, gateways by my third and fourth. I guess his multitask/planning fails a bit here and he doesn’t do the same, but his army is initially larger due to SCV sacking so I have to turtle by my third while he rebuilds by his fourth. Eventually I spend my bank, wear him down through storm drops and DT harass, and win.

Based on what I've heard about Chicago's workload, was spending your college career there worth it? What's best about Chicago as a city?

If you asked me last year I would’ve said that I’d go here again for sure, now I’m not so positive about that answer but I think it’s the same. There are still tons of easy classes you can take if you want, and I don’t actually know if the difficult classes are much harder than the difficult classes at similar universities. I hear stories that suggest they are but it’s pretty likely they’re exaggerated.

You typically post very strange pictures and articles on IRC, where on your internet adventures do you find these?

A long time ago everyone thought he was terrible but I’m pretty sure that was just a gimmick, except no one caught on that it was a gimmick. But I guess your question is asking why Snunch would quit “the only enjoyable part of the site” and continue laddering, posting in Chloraforum, and joining tournaments… what a silly man.

Do you really love LonelyNess?

Yeah I like him, I don’t know why there is so much LonelyNess hate on Smogon. It’s clear he worked his ass off on SPL and tried to be as fair as he could be, except that all the drama that comes with team tournaments focused on him and made him into a pariah. You might not like his decisions but he always made them with integrity and kept his word (ironically, if he didn’t keep his word he might be more popular). We also played UU together for a long time and he’s a smart guy to talk to.

who are you rooting for in wcop?

Historically I’ve always rooted for Oceania but I hear they are out… right now I’m actually checking to see which teams are still in so I can pick one. USA West since a lot of my friends have come from that team (even if they aren’t playing this year).

I assume you heard this from him. TFC, Coronis, and I went through a phase where we decided making our own IRC channel would be fun, I made #nowhere and I know Coronis made a separate IRC channel. We had an understanding though that the idea was all of ours, so TFC and Coronis always had the password to my channel… and I’m pretty sure they still do except Coronis quit.

I think you picked up slangs/mannerisms but sometimes when you use them they feel forced. Do I feel that I personally “corrupted” you? No? It’s obvious that hanging around IRC channels has changed the way you speak. But you don’t need to type the same way as other people just because you hang out with them online. I’ve even noticed that my own “IRC persona” has mellowed out a lot since two years ago when I was on all the time.

What is your opinion on expert belt rotom and do you really hate playing me?

It’s a strong bluff set that is good against my teams because I like to use Water/Ghost/Heatran. I only dislike playing against you because you always seem to predict well against me and use random sets that wreck my teams… I hate losing :(.

This is a difficult question, I bet chicken tastes pretty good though. The main course of the meal would be Blaziken, perhaps seasoned with Roserade, with a side salad of Shaymin. Flaaffy pot stickers seem like they would be tasty, and if this was especially high end we would have salted Exeggcute eggs as well. Drinks from Miltank of course.

If you’re thinking of other situations, I can’t remember them which means they weren’t really a big deal. It’s just fun to make a fuss about stuff in team tournaments since everyone takes them so seriously. That combined with the high you get off everyone getting excited/upset about the same thing in a team channel is probably the explanation you’re looking for… feel free to ask me about specific events though.

No. I’m allergic to cats and dogs and so is the rest of my family so we never had any. I guess we have a fish tank at home but people might not consider those pets. Even if I wasn’t allergic I don’t know if I’d want to get a cat or a dog now… most people who have them grew up in a family with them so they know beforehand that they’ll like cats or they’ll like dogs. I’m pretty ambivalent on the issue so what happens when I get a pet and it turns out it’s not my thing? It’s not like a video game you don’t like and can just stick it in your closet.

favourite build to execute in sc2?

Properly executing 1 gate Phoenix in PvP or PvZ FFE into 5 Phoenix and a third, so I guess Phoenix builds in general. They reward multitasking more than any other Protoss opener and you can get insanely far ahead if you outplay your opponent either on a mechanical level (multitasking and crisis management) or on a strategic level (does he transition into colossus or twilight tech for Protoss, infestors or spire for Zerg).

When will you reach the level of korean pro in SC2?

Korean pros practice fifteen hours a day. I practice a few hours every week or two during the year, a few hours every few days during the summer. I’ll never be as good as any Korean pro and I’m fine with that.

Not really, it’s just a generally fun channel for talking about random stuff.

Have you achieved penetration?

Once in sixth grade I consciously stapled my thumb in class. I think I wanted to see whether the stapler would somehow recognize that I had it on my thumb, but it just stapled it anyways… didn’t hurt too much so I just took it out, but my thumb felt sort of odd for a while afterwards.

Are you still paranoid about people knowing who you are?

I was never paranoid, I just don’t see the point in making my identity public knowledge. Also people on IRC tend to be obnoxious about it (rey/lamppost minor picture drama, countless plays on Eo’s/Folgorio’s/Bluewind’s name, etc).

I suspect there isn’t a supreme being, but honestly, I just don’t care about whether I’m right or not. I think arguments about this are pointless. Partly it’s because almost every debate I’ve read on the issue has made me want to cry, but partly it’s because I don’t think the answer has any bearing on how people should act.

Reproduce, make swag, and destroy the environment and each other. But more seriously (if any of these four are even serious questions) I don’t think we have a role since I view the universe from a naturalist perspective. Human beings evolved from goop, subject to the constraints of physics/biochemistry/etc, and in that context, the question of our “role” is non-sensical.

Dunno but I’m kind of hoping he’ll lift you up and drop you on the head. It’s probably possible to create a stone he can’t lift because his subconscious might know that he doesn’t want to lift the stone, even though he has the strength to do it.

Not seriously, but I had a book of Bach’s Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin before I lost it so sometimes I’d go through and just fiddle around with pieces. They look so deceptively easy to play… the execution is absurd though.

Policy debate is best debate.

I'm pretty sure I already might know the answer to this from my own experience, but what made you decide to stop debating in college, if anything?

Well there’s no policy team at my school, just parliamentary, and when I got involved in student activities I didn’t find that interesting at all. If I went to Northwestern or Emory would I have done debate? Maybe, but near the end of my high school career I was getting a bit disillusioned with the activity as a whole because of the reliance on technical prowess over everything else. That sounds a bit weird to say because that was what made policy so attractive to me in the first place (compared to, say, LD or speech), but when you see people winning debates with cards that are literally shit and say nothing, simply because the opponent dropped a point or couldn’t get to it in time… I know that in the same situation, as a judge, I would also vote for that same team, but I don’t like that it’s possible for argument quality to be weighted so lightly. This isn’t to say that I think judges are never concerned about argument quality. I know I’ve had several close debates come down to nuances about evidence laid out explicitly (especially in climate or topicality), and the hypothetical situation that I outlined above is a case where one team goofed. However, the point remains that I think there should be some sort of a priori threshold for argument quality, and this wasn’t the vibe I got from policy back when I did it. I don’t even know how I could change judge philosophies to account for it in a fair manner without drastically altering the activity (read: I hate judge intervention and think it wrecks the event, but I don’t know of a way to solve my problem without introducing that).

Also, there’s the enormous time commitment, and I know for sure that my grades/other activities suffered in high school because of research/prep/travel for debate. I don’t know if I’d be willing to make the same sacrifice in college, especially since I don’t think a career in law would interest me too much.

To me the national circuit is policy debate, since I don’t really have much to compare it with. I guess some of my squadmates went to states/nationals (which, for those uninitiated with debate, aren’t part of the “national circuit” as I call it) and they told me that you might have to speak slower there and use less radical arguments. I prefer the style that I did, obviously, because I never did any other style. My instinct is that it’s more technical and therefore less subject to judge intervention, but I can’t verify that.

Three years removed from the activity it’s a bit hard to determine exactly how debate influenced me. I was exposed to a wide range of arguments very superficially, which is a good basis for further study. One thing that I can definitely attribute to debate is that I can get up in front of a crowd, either literally or figuratively, and express my opinions confidently. That’s probably the best takeaway from debate. I think most of the “debate increases critical reasoning” claims are unfounded because I don’t feel that it is any more effective at doing that than the other extracurriculars I would’ve done during high school (for Asian me, either Science Olympiad or math competitions). Obviously you develop reasoning skills if you do debate instead of sitting on your couch, but that’s not really a fair comparison, is it?

what event in your life has most shaped who you are today?

Probably when I re-met my high school best friend (that label applied in high school but I’m not sure if it still does) while pretending to study for a final at the public library. We had very similar perspectives on a lot of things but she was a lot more liberal on a few points. I guess this influenced the way I think about the world & people. This isn’t the “true” answer to your question, but everything else I might want to pick is a sum of a ton of different events that I can’t isolate from the rest of my experiences. If that makes any sense. In other words this is the best answer I can give you.
