So, I went ahead and tried my hand at game music remixing...

Well, in case anyone has or has not noticed, I've been away for a few months upon moving back to Ohio. For various reasons, I was stuck without reliable internet access. In fact, I'm only returning thanks to my cell phone. :/

Well, in the months after moving back, I was stuck using a computer with no internet which had an old version of FL Studio 5 on it. Being bored I decided it would be fun to tinker around with it for a spell and try my hand at music making.

Now, on my days off from work or when I got home, I sat at this no fun box, (remember there's no internet connectivity on it) and spent time digitally recreating songs from various games that I had previous knowledge of already playing on a piano. But alas there's a problem; I had these songs I was proud of, but no way to share them with the world!

....

Weeks pass...

So I get the bright idea to load up all the mp3s and midis I made and transfer them onto my Mp3 player (which doubles as a storage device) and make way for the library, which has this elusive "internet". Now, after uploading all my songs to some music site, I have the oppurtunity to share what I made.

Be forewarned that I'm still relatively new at this and will most likely never get any of my shit on OCR anytime soon. Maybe within a couple years or so, but not in any foreseeable near future. Also, I don't know how to read sheet music, so I had to learn all my songs by ear.

Track 1: Dance with Darkness (A Castlevania mini medley)
This was my premiere piece. I gathered up my knowledge of CV songs I had a decent skill with playng, and assembled them together in one little song with a cute little name. There are literally a bunch of songs from various titles in the CV universe in this collection. The trick is you identifying all of them. ;o (Don't worry all the songs are easily identifiable.)

One thing to be wary of is that I did not do the whole song for many of them, just little snippets. This is due to either me not knowing how to play the rest or simply not wanting to (lazy).

Track 2: Robotnik in my house eating my eggs

This tune came into being after constantly playing this song on keyboard and figuring out how to play the individual segments of it perfectly. Because there's a bit going on in this song, it's kinda difficult to play it perfectly on keyboard as is. (kinda = very)

However, all the pieces fit together nicely in the finished product that I hope you'll enjoy.

Tracks 3 and 4: Midis

These next two tracks are little midis I made after completing the two above tracks. The first being a midi of Bloody Tears and Vampire Killer from the CV universe and the second being a midi of the Dr. robotnik theme from Sonic 2.

Though they are only midis, I like the way they sound so you guys will hear them too.

Track 5: Darkness Within (Battle with Magus)

This is my newest piece, I finished it last night. Strangely enough, i never even played that much of Chrono Trigger, I only heard this piece and fell in love with the theme itself. I pretty much started anew with this one, using all different instruments to create a darker feel. I felt the usage of violin helped get this across too. (I really wanna learn to play violin in real life)

Also, because I'm such a Castlevania nut, I couldn't help but throw in a tiny snippet from Bloody Tears in there. :)

That's all I have to show for now, I'm still pieceing together song ideas of what to do next. some possible candidates are some themes from Dragon Warrior titles and Megaman. I'll update as more comes into fruition.

Don't be shy to critique what you hear here. I'm still new, but am always wiling to improve.

I apologize if this isn't the right place to post this, I tried searching and this was the only forum that seemed acceptable to me.

I can't believe there are no replies here. I haven't really played any of the games but I have worked (briefly) with midis and these sound great. I'm assuming you used a plug in keyboard thingo to play these? Its pretty cool that you can play and mix the themes together, great job.

I'm not a keyboard player, so when I used a midi program (in year 9 music class lol) I had trouble getting any flow in my music. Actually the program was pretty crappy and would always record something out of sync no matter what I tried. In saying thats it's still really fun to do =]

Keep at it, I'm interested to hear some more, hopefully of a song I've heard before.

Actually, my keyboard lacks any pc support. FL Studio has the option of exporting your current project in midi format at the cost of making every instrument sound like a basic piano. This isn't so bad as a well played piano can sound graceful too. :-) As to your last part, well, i don't know what games you play. :p

Wow, that's cool. i like
You know, it would be cool if you could make a song out of pokemon cries.
I tried it and it was piss hard ._.
Oh, i like 2, but i can't listen to the others after 1 and 2.

The links that leade to Tindeck should have a download option somewhere on the screen. If not, try right click; save as. The putfile links require membership to download, so I'll upload those songs elsewhere when I get the chance, sorry. :(

Oh well then how exactly does FL studio work? The only way I can see this being done is if you individually select the pitch and length of each note. If this is how you did it then you deserve even greater kudos, it would have taken forever. Could you explain just how you go about "digitally recreating" the songs?

It doesn't really matter if its from a game I've played before, but I am interested to hear more.

Yea, Fl Studio has you manually setting pitch and length of each note, but you set those notes on what's called a ''piano roll'' which shows a cute little keyboard that you use to help you set them with. I would definitely reccomend checking Fl Studio out as it was designed to be easy to use for those starting out as well as be relatively powerful. @X: Magnemix wasn't terribly hard to do, as I had an idea of what I was gonna do with it. The hardest part was actually cropping the cries of the pokemon.

We'll see. Remember, the Pc I'm working with has no internet access so I can't download anything new to it. On another note, I've been remixing the classic ''Halloween'' theme from the same titled movie series. It's not technically game music, but it was simple enough to do. Expect the final version to be uploaded eventually.

Dude, I missed you :(

All of these remixes are petty freaking awesome. The Magnemix is still one of the best things I've ever heard.

Can't wait for the Halloween remix!

Hey, It's been quite awhile, but I've since worked on a couple more remixes. Both of these are from the first Castlevania game, and in my opinion are two of the most memorable from the whole franchise.

Wicked Child: (Tentatively named Wicked Tim)
Took me a bit of time to learn this song by ear, but the end result is a nice sounding piece that I am proud of.

Heart of Fire: (Named Heart of Darkness because I can)

This was one of the most difficult songs I ever learned. It took several weeks to get each key down. Man, It sucks not being able to read music. :(

Still, I think this is my best sounding remix to date.

Lemme know how ya'll think. :) I'm thinking on just doing every song from the first CV game as a little project.

*Uses Phoenix Down on topic*

Anywho, I've a few more pieces to share today.

The firs one is from the first CV game and is the BG for the last level of the game. The track is known as "Out of Time", and really makes it feel like you're about to prepare for the final confrontation with Dracula!

And for fun, I did an alternate 8bit version like what you would hear on the original NES game. It's obviously different from the original, but that's part of the charm.

This next one is an 8bit remix of "Heart of Fire", also from the first CV game. I know this tune was 6bit to begin with as well, but an alternate version never hurt anyone.

Next is an 8bit remix of Dr. Robotnik's theme from Sonic 2. I think it sounds damn near perfect as to what the NES would be able to do with this song. Alls we need is an 8bit Sonic 2 now. :o

And last but not least is one I just finished tonight. I do not know how many Megaman Legends fans there are out there, but this is a remix of one of the minor battle themes from early on in the game in Megaman Legends 2. The song is called "Into the Tundra" because it takes place in the wintery area of the first island. This was also my first time toying around with a chorus. (The original song used one as well, so I felt it was ok)

More to come likely within the next couple of days.

EDIT:

Finished a remix of the classic Bonne Family theme from the Megaman Legends games.
