LC Scraggy

[OVERVIEW]

With a diverse movepool, a decent stat spread, and a great offensive typing, Scraggy is a strong offensive threat in LC. Its unique typing gives it access to STAB on strong moves such as High Jump Kick, Knock Off, and Drain Punch. Its access to Knock Off also allows it to support other teammates by removing items from opposing Pokemon and helps it sweep with powerful moves such as High Jump Kick, while coverage moves help it break through its checks. Its solid bulk gives it opportunities to set up with Dragon Dance and be a potent sweeper. Scraggy also has the option of two abilities to help it sweep: Moxie allows it to become stronger every time it KOes a foe, while Shed Skin allows it to set up on status inducers. Unfortunately, Scraggy's typing leaves it very weak to Fairy-types and common Flying- and Fighting-types. Additionally, Scraggy must pick between its potential coverage moves, leaving it walled by one of its checks. Lastly, Scraggy lacks immediate power and needs support to break through its checks despite its coverage options.

Moves
========

Dragon Dance allows Scraggy to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, reaching 21 Speed, and break through foes it wouldn't be able to otherwise. High Jump Kick is a powerful STAB attack used for breaking through neutral targets. For example, +1 High Jump Kick OHKOes most Berry Juice Vullaby sets after Stealth Rock damage. However, Drain Punch can be used for its recovery and to avoid taking damage from misses. Knock Off hits Ghost- and Psychic-types that resist Scraggy's Fighting STAB attack, with the extra utility of removing the target's item. Iron Head is used for hitting Fairy-types like Spritzee, while Zen Headbutt is an option for hitting Fighting- and Poison-types such as Croagunk, Oddish, and Mareanie.

Set Details
========

This set has Speed and Attack maximized to help its sweeping ability, with an Adamant ability to improve the damage rolls on defensive foes such as Eviolite Spritzee. Berry Juice helps Scraggy set up on defensive Pokemon that lack the ability to OHKO it, such as Mareanie and Ferroseed. Alternatively, Eviolite can be used so that Scraggy can set up on more offensive foes such as Pawniard and Onix. If you're running Berry Juice, the remaining EVs should be invested in HP for extra mixed bulk; they should be invested in Defense or Special Defense if using Eviolite so that the benefit of Eviolite can be maximized. Moxie is preferred as the ability for its greater sweeping potential, with the drawback being that it gives Scraggy a harder time setting up compared to Shed Skin. Alternatively, Shed Skin allows Scraggy to absorb status ailments, most notably burns, giving it a good chance of shaking the status off while setting up on Pokemon such as Mareanie and Ponyta.

Usage Tips
========

Scraggy is best used as a late-game sweeper and should set up when its checks are suitably weakened. It should try to set up on Dark-types such as Pawniard, Rock-types such as Onix, or Steel-types such as Ferroseed. These are all threatened by Scraggy's Fighting STAB moves and struggle to OHKO it even without Eviolite. If Shed Skin is being used, set up on status users such as Mareanie and Ferroseed. Try to use Knock Off early- and mid-game on Scraggy's checks to make a late-game sweep easier to achieve. Avoid letting Scraggy accrue too much damage prior to setting up so that it is less vulnerable to priority moves. Scraggy will struggle to sweep if its checks are insufficiently worn down. Spritzee and Timburr are particularly threatening, since Scraggy struggles to break through the former even with Iron Head, while the latter threatens it with Mach Punch.

Team Options
========

Knock Off users such as Vullaby make good partners by making opposing Pokemon easier for Scraggy to break when set up. Dual screens users like Natu can give Scraggy multiple setup opportunities in the same match and also leave it less susceptible to priority moves. Scraggy can be used in a core stacking Fighting-types with Timburr or Galarian Farfetch'd, since they have access to Knock Off and useful coverage moves for wearing down their shared checks. Pivots such as Vullaby and Chinchou provide good support by safely bringing Scraggy in, either by slow pivoting or by using their pivot move on a predicted switch. Entry hazard removers such as Timburr and Vullaby are useful, since Scraggy struggles to sweep with Sticky Web present, and removing layers of Spikes helps keep Scraggy out of range of priority attacks. Diglett can use Memento to give Scraggy a good setup opportunity while also being able to trap key threats. Pokemon that can pressure Spritzee and Timburr, such as Mareanie and Oddish, also make great teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A Choice Scarf set can be run with Moxie to form a potent sweeper, but it struggles to break through its checks due to its lack of immediate damage. Poison Jab can be used to hit Morelull and Cottonee harder, but the flinches from Iron Head are generally more useful. An Intimidate support set can be run to set up on physical attackers, particularly Onix, but it misses out on the sweeping potential that Scraggy has. Alternatively, Bulk Up can be run in tandem with Dragon Dance and Drain Punch to form a bulky sweeper with decent recovery.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fairy-types**: Spritzee resists both of Scraggy's STAB moves and OHKOes it in return. Nasty Plot Spritzee sets can be broken through more easily, however. It should also be wary of Iron Head and Poison Jab.

**Poison-types**: Oddish and Mareanie resist Scraggy's Fighting STAB attacks and do not take much damage from Knock Off. Oddish uses Strength Sap to prevent Scraggy setting up, and Mareanie can cripple it with Scald burns. Both should be wary of Zen Headbutt.

**Fighting-types**: Croagunk, Timburr, and Galarian Farfetch'd can take an attack from Scraggy and OHKO in return with a Fighting-type STAB move. Croagunk and Timburr also have strong priority in Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch, respectively.

**Faster Choice Scarf Users**: Faster Choice Scarf users such as Galarian Farfetch'd outspeed and KO Scraggy.

[OVERVIEW]
  • I think this overview may overstate how good Scraggy is - I would mention that while it's a potentially potent set-up sweeper, its immediate power is often lacking and that it can struggle to break through its checks even with the right coverage move.

[SET]

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Mention that Dragon Dance boost Scraggy's offense and its ability to break through Pokemon it otherwise couldn't.
  • Emphasize Hi Jump Kick's power and advantages over Drain Punch - for example, +1 HJK always OHKOs uninvested Juice Vullaby.
  • Replace the Farfetch'd mention on ZHB with Oddish.

Set Details
========
  • You don't have anything about Eviolite or Berry Juice here, including why the latter is preferred (makes Scraggy less vulnerable to priority wearing it down and ending its sweep)
  • How many 14 Spe scarfers are there that need outspeeding? Tying with Adamant Scarf Vullaby at +1 seems like a decent enough reason to run Jolly, but it should be noted that Adamant improves your rolls against Spritzee, among other things:
+1 252+ Atk Scraggy Iron Head vs. 212 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 14-18 (51.8 - 66.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Possible damage amounts: (14, 14, 14, 14, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 16, 18)

+1 252 Atk Scraggy Iron Head vs. 212 HP / 196+ Def Eviolite Spritzee: 12-16 (44.4 - 59.2%) -- 68.4% chance to 2HKO

Possible damage amounts: (12, 12, 12, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 16)
  • I think Moxie is probably generally better than Shed Skin - Shed Skin RNG is nice for dealing with the status users you mention, but it's not guaranteed, and Scraggy could be forced out before your status wears off. Moxie should be emphasized for its runaway sweeping potential and ability to overwhelm teams.
  • A bulkier spread could be worth mentioning as an alternative option in conjunction with Drain Punch and Shed Shell for a bulkier sweeper that preys on fat teams.

Usage Tips
========
  • Mention why it's good to set up on Pokemon like Pawniard and Onix - they're threatened by your fighting STAB and usually can't afford to stay in. Scraggy can't afford to set up on these guys after too much chip, either, because both outspeed it.
  • How often are Ferroseed and Drifloon (barring Acro sets) staying in on you, anyway? Is Shed Shell necessary to set up on these two? Mareanie is probably a better mention.
  • Mention that Scraggy will have an exceptionally difficult time sweeping if any of its checks are in good health - Spritzee and Timburr in particular - because of Scraggy's difficulty breaking the former even after a boost and the latter's dangerous priority, and thus that these checks should be dealt with before trying to set up.

Team Options
========
  • Scraggy needs teammates that can reliably pressure and threaten Spritzee and Timburr. Pawniard and Oddish could be worth mentions here.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Clarify why Iron Head is up on the set and Poison Jab is down here - Iron Head offers flinch chance to break through Spritzee, which Poison Jab trades for a poison chance that punishes Spritzee in the long term.
  • Mention what Pokemon Intimidate helps you set up on - Onix for sure but definitely not Pawniard any more!
  • *****BIG COMMENT RIGHT HERE*****: I'm going to recommend for now that Scarf be moved to OO. There are too many strong and common fighting resists from Scraggy to safely lock into HJK most of the time and clean. There's a definite niche here, but right now I don't think the set is strong enough for a full analysis. That could change with the advent of Home (Scraggy should get Knock Off back and Drifloon might be banned). If another QC member disagrees on this point, you can wait on them to say something about it.

Checks and Counters
===================
  • Mention Cutiefly and Spritzee by name as Fairy-types - Cutie outspeeds you unboosted, while defensive Spritzee easily survives a +1 Iron Head. Mention that NP Spritzee variants are much less reliable checks and that Iron Head flinch can ruin any Spritzee's day.
  • Burns from Mareanie's Scald are probably more relevant than Haze, which is not common at all.
  • Timburr and to a lesser extent Croagunk should both have their super-effective priority emphasized for their ability to revenge-kill Scraggy. Farfetch'd is typically not going to survive a +1 Hi Jump Kick.
  • HJK hits both Timburr and Farfetch'd harder than ZHB.

With the Home meta now where we're at, Scarf might be worth the keep. I will defer to other QC members' opinions here (as soon as there is a check), but with Knock Off back, Scarf Scraggy seems fine.

No real opinion on Scarf Scraggy. Yet to use it, little want to atm too. I think the DD set should not run Knock Off. HJK Iron Head ZHB are all desired and secure KOs while Knock Off is just for ghosts and neutral coverage. ZHB gives you SE coverage against most of what you click Knock vs.

Serene has expressed similar thoughts before, dunno what anyone else feels.

I think Knock should be slashed behind ZHB on that set. ZHB is probably better overall for beating Mare, but if your team hypothetically struggled to kill Frillish but not Mare, then Knock could be worth it for that.

I agree with the set Fiend mentioned. Knock off should stay as a slash though as it primarily aids with Frillish (as mentioned by KSG) and Ponyta-Galar who has dazzling gleam. Knock off is also useful for the rare honedge who otherwise walls all of these moves.

One thing I might add is to remove poison jab from a slash. Iron head is the better alternative for hitting fairy type pokemon. The only way I see poison jab being considered is for cottonee and morelull who are both currently unranked. You could also run stone edge instead on a drain punch variant to still OHKO cutiefly, but also OHKO BJ vullaby at +1.

I know there was some discussion before on how the Scraggy moveset should look like; this is what I like and what I personally want to see on the analysis.

name: Dragon Dance Sweeper
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: High Jump Kick / Drain Punch
move 3: Knock Off / Zen Headbutt
move 4: Iron Head / Zen Headbutt

I think Knock Off in the current meta is a move that is really difficult to designate to a slash, but in this case it's needed. Scraggy relies on the opposing player being unable to guess what your 3rd and 4th moves are. If they happen to guess incorrectly, you can easily lose the entire game if you give Scraggy enough support. Knock Off happens to give you a good failsafe option and could potentially nail things like Frillish that would otherwise hard-wall you, while still being able to hit Oddish and Mareanie for neutral and removing bulk, potentially setting up for a future sweep or a second boost depending on the position. Poison Jab, on the other hand, doesn't provide much of anything that Iron Head doesn't and I can't picture a practical situation where I'd want a poison instead of a flinch

Dragon Dance allows Scraggy to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, reaching 22 Speed.
This spread maxes at 14, which is 21 speed.
This allows it to set up on Drifloon
remove drifloon mention
Status setters such as Drifloon
remove drifloon mention
Memento users such as Diglett can give Scraggy a good set up opportunity.
While trapping key threats, move this one up in the list.
Other Options
=============
Throw Poison Jab down here.
Choice Scarf can be run with Moxie to form a potent sweeper, but struggles to break through its checks.
It's immediate damage is the main reason why this mon cannot sweep, in addition to being locked into a move, it might not have the immediate damage to score the first kill and subsequently get the ball rolling.
  • Intimidate support set can be run, but misses out on the sweeping potential that Scraggy has.
  • Intimidate can be used to set up on physical attackers, particularly Onix.
We don't really need two bullets on this, either combine them or remove one.
Can run Bulk Up sets, but is outclassed by Timburr.
BU on Scraggy is best used in tandem with Dragon Dance, Drain Punch and Eviolite, as it allows scraggy to set up a Dragon Dance after bulking up on something like Pawniard who tries to sneak a Knock Off on BJ Scraggy, or potentially an Onix who tries to chip it into Timburr Mach range.

Looks pretty good!

OVERVIEW
With a versatile movepool, a decent stat spread and a great offensive typing Scraggy is a strong offensive threat in the LC metagame. Its unique Dark / Fighting typing gives it access to strong STAB moves but leaves it very weak to Fairy-types and weak to common Flying- and Fighting-types.
Get rid of the Dark / Fighting and just list some examples
Its good Speed tier and Attack stat also allow it to be a threatening Choice-Scarf user.
Since this isn't getting its own set, I wouldn't mention it in the overview

Would replace Frillish with Ponyta

**Fighting-types**: (colon) Croagunk, Timburr, and Galarian Farfetch'd can take an attack from Scraggy and OHKO in return with a Fighting STAB move. Croagunk and Timburr also have strong priority in Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch, respectively.

**Faster Choice Scarf users**: (colon) Faster Choice Scarf users such as Galarian Farfetch'd and Rufflet outspeed and KO Scraggy.

I definitely made some subjective changes to make things more concise (and instead of as well as, for example).

[OVERVIEW]

With a diverse movepool, a decent stat spread, and a great offensive typing, Scraggy is a strong offensive threat in the LC metagame (when users browse the dex they'll know it's LC). Its unique typing gives it access to strong STAB moves such as High Jump Kick, Knock Off, and Drain Punch punch but leaves it very weak to Fairy-types and weak to common Flying- and Fighting-types (such as?). Its access to Knock Off also allows it to support other teammates by removing items from opposing Pokemon and or help it sweep with powerful moves such as High Jump Kick and,(RC) while coverage moves (such as) help it break through its to deal with checks; however, it often has to pick only one coverage option, leaving it walled by one of its checks (you may want to bring up that this is due to a lack of move slots). Its solid bulk gives it opportunities to set up with Dragon Dance and be a potent sweeper, although it lacks immediate power and needs support to break through its checks even with its coverage moves. Lastly, Scraggy has the option of two abilities to help it sweep: Moxie allows it to become stronger every time it KOes a foe, while Shed Skin allows it to set up on status inducers.

Moves
========

Dragon Dance allows Scraggy to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame, reaching 21 Speed, as well as to and break through foes it wouldn't be able to otherwise (such as). Knock Off hits Ghost-types and Psychic-types that resist Scraggy's Fighting STAB attack, with the extra utility of removing the target's item. Iron Head is used for hitting Fairy-types like Spritzee, while Zen Headbutt is an option for hitting Fighting- and Poison-types such as Oddish, Croagunk, and Mareanie.

Set Details
========

This set has Speed and Attack maximized to help its sweeping ability, with an Adamant ability to improve the damage rolls on defensive foes such as Eviolite Spritzee. Berry Juice helps Scraggy to set up on defensive Pokemon that lack the ability to OHKO it, such as Mareanie and Ferroseed.

Usage Tips
========

Scraggy is best used as a late-game sweeper and should set up when its checks are suitably weakened. It should try to set up on Dark-types such as Pawniard, Rock-types such as Onix, or Steel-types such as Ferroseed. These are all threatened by Scraggy's Fighting STAB moves and struggle to OHKO Scraggy even without Eviolite. If Shed Skin is being used, set up on status users such as Mareanie and Ferroseed. Try to use Knock Off early- and mid-game on Scraggy's checks to make a late-game sweep easier to achieve. Avoid letting Scraggy accrue too much damage prior to setting up for a sweep so that it is less vulnerable to priority moves when trying to sweep. Scraggy will struggle to sweep if its checks are insufficiently worn down. Spritzee and Timburr are particularly threatening, since Scraggy struggles to break through the former even with Iron Head, while the latter threatens it with Mach Punch.

Team Options
========

Knock Off users such as Vullaby make good partners with Scraggy by making opposing Pokemon easier for Scraggy to break when set up. Dual Duals screens users like Natu can give Scraggy multiple setup opportunities in the same match and also leave it less susceptible to priority moves. Scraggy can be used in a core stacking Fighting-typesTypes with Timburr or Galarian Farfetch'd, since they have access to Knock Off and useful coverage moves for wearing down their shared checks. Pivots such as Vullaby and Chinchou provide good support by bringing Scraggy in for no damage, either by slow pivoting or by using their pivot move on a predicted switch. Pokemon that can pressure Spritzee and Timburr, such as Mareanie and Oddish, also make great teammates for Scraggy.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

===================

**Fairy-types**: Spritzee resists both of Scraggy's STAB moves and OHKOes it in return. Nasty Plot Spritzee sets can be broken through more easily, however. It should also should be wary of Iron Head and Poison Jab.
