While it's sad that our team lost in the finals, I'm just extremely happy how Tlenit performed in OMWC overall and I felt like my work went with a satisfying smile. In this tournament, I took a less stressful approach to scout and prep my opponents. While I would say 15-30% of it was prep, 70-85% of it was more focused on being ahead with the meta, as well as trying to build to find counterplay against the threats, and just optimize myself really. So I focused way more on having solid structures and having the interactions go as advantageous and easy to flow to my favor. I'll share both NFE and MnM teams I've built and be prepared for a
long wall of text for each team as a note. Shoutouts and such will be below too.
NFE aka No Fucking Evolve
Tlenit vs Lepton, Pools
The inspiration for this team came from the structure of Magmar's teams at the end of OMPL, and
Kythr vs Tlenit at NFEPL V Semis. I wanted to experiment more with Fire Offense overall and I felt like Lepton's teams were heavily vulnerable by Koffing and Magmar. So I took that structure and adjusted it to my own liking. Thwackey was faster so it was able to stop 260 Golbat from defogging, while I always tend to add less speed EVs on Vullaby in order to be slower Tangela and opposing Vullabys. Wart is an excellent fit for its fire resistance typing while being able to switch in against Piloswine and opposing Wartortle with ease, and pivoting ofc. Piloswine is always a little faster so I'll be able to outspeed Hattrem, and Koffing is an excellent check to physical threats while having the ability to annoy almost every hazard removals; only Shell Smash Wartortle is able to force Koffing out. I think the team is really excellent for its strengths, but it does have its vulnerability where Electabuzz could be really annoying. I made an
update to optimize the team slightly more, but I recommend the finals team over this one even this isn't a bad team. For the match itself, Tlenit made some critical mistakes such as weakening Koffing which let Gurdurr go crazy and took a bad risk on Magmar. He owes it up for the finals though haha.
Tlenit vs Duguo, Pools
Just wanted to experiment more on Corsola-Galar as it has not been used so much nowadays. Double Dance Corsola-G intrigued me as it had a fitting wincon as a SpDef setup mon. I remember some people tried to use it, but they always fell flat with some of their sets and I personally like Corsola-Galar in NFE so I was like thinking it was a good opportunity to show it. Something like Specs Magmar became a 4hko after 1 CM got me confident enough to go with it. I build it with F-Sight Duosion as my idea was to somewhat scout out if the Electabuzz had taunt since Taunt hardly does anything to Duosion, and Corsola-Galar does not mind Toxic as much due to rest. Duosion had also an excellent lure to throw toxic on dark types trying to switch in, securing the wincon for Corsola-G. However I became a little stuck in this position thinking on my next mon, and I didn't think having a dark-mon or Ferroseed would work this time. And there was this conflict where I didn't want to run Protect on Duosion as I believe Protect Duosion is extremely easy to exploit. At the same time, I wanted to have something against Clefairy and Golbat, so I had to think outside of the box and created this weird Tangela. Designed to survive a Fsight + rocks from full health without Eviolite, it can also put sleep on Golbat and Clefairy. I added synthesis here so Tangela could stay in the field longer while ignoring the interactions where the opponents try to keep Tangela at that percent where it can die to F-sight.
After that, I added the classic Piloswine, Golbat, and Wartortle core tbh. Fast Piloswine is the best set no cap, outspeed and clean up the opponents w/o getting hit >>> tank hits and hit back.
I wanted another way to get rid of the opponent's item instead of only using Tangela so Theif Golbat fits in extremely well. Also at that time, I was afraid to get cheesed by BD Magmar so I added so much speed so Golbat could outspeed it.
SS Wartortle is the only way to get force Koffing out, and have some fire resistance and a sweeper at the same time. Wartortle also benefits help from Tangela knocking off their checks while Wartortle could get rid of Cors-G's threats.
The match was pretty difficult for Duguo from the start, and I noticed Tlenit changed one of the moves with Sludge Bomb over something(probably synthesis) which is fine too if you want to punish opposing Tangela. Tlenit took this game pretty convincingly otherwise.
This was my favorite team just for the very different structure I usually tend to build and I had to actually think outside of the box on this one.
Tlenit vs Ho3n & Miyami
My man played against both of them at the same time with the same team wtf, the balls of this man.
The best part is that he could have won both of the games, but some big misplays such as not spinning on Turn 49 against Miyami cost him the game. However, the losses didn't cost us the playoffs thankfully though. Not posting the team since those are Tlenit's own ones, so you gotta ask him for the team.
Tlenit vs King Leo V, Semis
Looking back at my prep against him, Leo was definitely the most difficult person to scout since he builds his teams differently compared to everyone else. But if there was something I knew it was that Leo was vulnerable to more matchups so I took my time to scout his replays to see how I could exploit it to the highest degree. I ended up with Spikes Ferroseed since Leo didn't have the best anti-hazard control and I could see Ferroseed run rampage against Leo's teams at the moment. So I ended up with a hazard stack with wish support. I really liked Clefairy in the team since it was the perfect opportunity for me to finally build a Clefairy with wish, and Clefairy was a perfect mon to deal with the Fraxure shit if Leo pulls that out again rofl. Ebuzz rest/talk is there because Tlenit really likes that set, and it kinda fits in there so I could switch in against some mons like Hattrem. I was pretty happy with how it turned out but I was more curious how Tlenit would use it against Leo. Tlenit got two critical lucky moments that ended Leo's run but I think the match was pretty tough for Leo overall though. His team was definitely interesting though. I guess he expected fire offense or something close to that, but yeah Tlenit took the game convincingly with a classic Wartortle moment.
Tlenit vs Lepton, Finals
I was more than prepared to prep, I wanted to build a team that would just tear apart whatever Lepton was going to bring. Besides the obvious Piloswine and Wartortle, I noticed that Lepton has been way comfortable with building more balance types, which ends up their teams being way slower and less speed control focused. It became easier knowing that beauts helped Lepton in semis, so I took it into account. I wanted to build a lot faster, offensive teams since I took a self-scout and noticed I did the same thing. I went through teams I build through the week, but I eventually came back and revisited the team from pools. I adjusted and made changes such as changing Koffing to Clefairy. I lost a wincon but in the process, I had a much easier time checking mons such as Electabuzz. This lets me be able to change the sets of the other teammates potentially for a stronger synergy and flow. E.G I could run faster Piloswine, Shell Smash Wartortle which helps Thwackey for Koffing MU so I could go for Sword Dance on it. I added toxic on Magmar so it punishes Wartortle switch-ins in long term. Clefairy checks the physdef threats and other annoying mons such as Ferroseed, but I added some SpDef EVs so Electabuzz has a low chance to 3hko Clefairy and it kinda helps to tank a hit against opposing SS Wartortle. Trick on Clefairy was definitely something I took from Lepton vs PD at OMWC Semis itself like it makes so much sense since the majority of mons use Eviolite and Clefairy can't tank for shit without Eviolite. IMO this is probably the most optimized team of a Thwackey/Magmar I could make really, and it's not that hard to use it noice. I personally think Lepton had such a hard time progressing the game since our team could answer literally anything back against them just based on the preview. And Tlenit played this excellently and just gave Lepton the hands. Overall I was very happy with this team and would recommend everyone that doesn't know NFE to try this team.
Here are some NFE Teams that I didn't end up using in OMWC. Take a grain of these teams though
Mix and Mega
I'll just be quick and say that I was definitely not happy with how I played mix n mega in OMWC overall, and I feel pretty sad that it cost the finals. But I think it's a worse fact that I lost to Derpyboi and TectonicDestroyer since I wanted to continue the streak against them hehe. Regardless thanks to Lasen and TNM for giving me an opportunity to play in OMWC instead of me being a supporter. And special thanks for my opponents that gave me a good match, especially to Derpyboi =)
Gman build the team for me vs hybone, so you should ask him for it. My thoughts on that match were that I made my blunders and it cost me the game. Not much else to say more about that game since I felt like I got omega owned.
vs TectonicDestroyer, Semis
I've always wanted to build a team around T-spikes with Glalitite Regieleki at some point because as a concept I felt like it had some "broken-ness" synergy together based on the interactions against defoggers/spinners when I theorized a lot. I was especially building around to overwhelm Ho-Oh and Milotic as they became more common for a lot of teams. So I went with a classic balance type of team since I was best at it. And with some help by Jordy and Gman for the prep, I felt like Tect/Redflix would build some offense with the big threats such as Etern and Urshifu-R, added by some defensive mons such as Milotic, Magearna, and Ho-Oh. I think my prep was pretty spot on and the team isn't that bad on its own. For the match itself though, I'm ashamed of how it went out starting from turn 1. I can make every excuse I could think of, but in the end, it was all on me especially the MU was more than likely in my favor, and Tect outplayed me pretty well.
vs Derpyboi, Finals
Sheesh, this week's prep was nothing more than the feeling of frustration and stress. I went through a lot of different teams with Gman, Jordy, and TectonicDestroyer(ty so much for trying btw), but most of them ended up denied. I accepted that building defensive teams doesn't work in the current meta so I had to figure something else. It didn't really help that I grew more paranoid that Derpyboi had Chazm/Beauts support. Jordy said something to me that helped me to calm myself though, so I went with what I liked while having the prep in mind. I ended up with a bulky offense team which I liked a lot honestly. I only wish I had toxic on Pheromosa instead of spin, so I could lure a Ho-Oh switch-ins and let Lunala 1v1 it. But w/o spin it was kinda suspectable to Stealth Rock though. Gonna add some comments to some of the mons here. Lunala set was an old spread where the HP EVs were to get less damage from sand. Eternatus was defense invested while being able to outspeed Urshifu-R, pretty much denying any progress from that mon and other mons too. Magearna was faster than Modest Lucarionite Magnezone and Encore keeps Setup mons at check, Swampert could sit on non-LO Eternatus while having Def EVs bulk to tank stuff, which creates a slight synergy with Kartana Knock Off.
I enjoyed our match despite that weird endgame. I didn't think Xerneas was that bulky like wtf that tanked from a Tough Claws-Stab Move. I could have played better, but I think I did alright enough except for that endgame there. Just sucked to lose when it's in a finals match I'll admit on that.
Thanks to everyone on EU discord and in DMs for all the NFE and MnM discussions and help, you guys know who you are. But there are some special thanks I want to speak up though.
Thank you
oops all shiny aka Lasen for personally DMing me and asking me to join the EU team, and it's sad we lost but your team will get it next time. Also nice memes, but I would rather thank you for being a very fun person overall!
My man
Ivar57 thanks for being such a homie overall. You're definitely the person I have spoken to the most over EU discord and perhaps in smogon itself in recent months. You've definitely potential to explore other tiers as you have even proved it. But really, I appreciate your presence from testing games, talking, and enjoying things without only it be mons. I've nothing more than wishing you the best in 2022 bro, you're fun.
Quagg my boy Quagsgone, I believe this is the first time we've been on the same team? We have had our weird NFE shenanigans and well we have our periods where either I beat you for a while or you beat me for a while(I gotta hold that L on NFE No Johns). But damn I've definitely talked with you quite on NFE/EU discord, although a bit out of random at times. I guess that's what happens when we live in the same country, and there aren't that many other Norwegians around here. Seriously though, thanks for all the talk, and just be a vibeful person to talk with overall. I hope you're trying other tiers since you have the potential, my man.
6271: Imperial Flagship (SBPC) ty for keeping my mood up while on OMWC bro,
Euphonos ay same to you, thanks for those music dms kekeke
Antares I just like to @ you tbh, but you've hyped me up in your own way so thanks I appreciate it bro. Hope you all get what you guys want in 2022 :)
For being my first time in playoffs and in finals at a team tour, I'll also announce it will be my last one to join a team tournament. Not only OMPL, but also NFEPL and all the others. I'm not someone that fits in team tours, despite the work I've put into overall. One of the main reasons is because I never played competitive pokemon to win, instead more to learn how competitive mons works, and I could push the meta I am enjoying without playing to win. Team tours are about teams trying to win, which doesn't work for me. While I've had fun at team tours, I can't lie that it has given me unnecessary stress and pressure at the same time since everyone else wants to win here. Unless I've changed my motive to play competitive mons, I'm done with team tours pretty much then. Bitter end beside, thanks to the people that hosted the tournament. It was indeed hype and I'll watch the next ones behind the scenes.
