Project OU Next Best Thing - Cycle Last: Mega Latias (Voting)

The Cane
Volcarona @ Buginium Z / Flyinium Z / Passho Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Hurricane
- Fire Blast / Giga Drain

An older BW set which still does some work on / against Rain. While Rain certainly got some new toys in ORAS and SM, if Volcarona ever sets up it obliterates it. Hurricane + Bug Buzz combined serves as a powerful offensive combination, which hits much of the metagame at least neutrally. Quiver Dance should be on every Volcarona, and if isn't you're wrong. Fire Blast is an odd choice for this set, but allows Volc to not get walled by pesky steel types. Giga Drain on the other hand allows you to yeet some of rains best users in Pert and Manaphy. Though you want to be well set up before taking these on.

Fear the cane.

I use Defensive QD as my default volc set these days, but that's not exciting anymore...

Defensive Utility Volcarona
191360

Volcarona @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Bold Nature
- Roost
- U-turn
- Fiery Dance
- Psychic / Whirlwind (I think I prefer Psychic after some testing; Kommo-O is really the only thing you want to phaze out)

What is does:
  • Check to tons of popular meta threats: Magearna, Ferrothorn, Kartana, Mawile, Medicham, Bulu, M-Scizor, Lopunny, Serperior, etc...
  • Actually get momentum of the usual volcarona walls like heatran, garchomp or stall stuff. You can turn into trapper for a kill.
  • Like regular volc, you can punish bad U-turns with flamebody, but you can do it way more reliably because you can take hits.
  • If you get the boost vs Toxapex on the switch from fiery dance, you can frequently beat it 1v1, but if you miss, you can just turn out.
Needs hazard removal like all volc do.

Defensive WoW Volcarona

Volcarona @ Charti Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 248 HP / 100 Def / 160 Spe
Timid Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Flamethrower
- Bug Buzz
- Roost

General idea
This time we have a defensive Volcarona with the aid of WoW, a powerful status move that neuters one SD from a physical set-up sweeper and the Atk boost of 2 Dragon Dances. Even with minimal EVs investment + a Timid nature Volcarona is still a fastish defensive monster, so we can add some physical bulk with the remaining EVs.
The combination of the detrimental effect of the burn + Roost allows this Volcarona to check physical threats way better.
The dual STABs are chosen in order to avoid being a Taunt-bait.

EVs (spread) and item
160 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allow Volcarona to outspeed Jolly Excadrill (303 vs 302 Spe points) and burn it. The remaining EVs enable Volcarona to better check Mega Mawile (and other Sucker Punch users), Mega Scizor, and Kartana.
Charti Berry is here to punish a threat that hurts us with Stone Edge/Rock Slide with a burn if we are lucky enough to connect a WoW.
Calcs (the burn can be Charti Berry towards Rock-type moves):
252 Atk Pure Power burned Medicham-Mega Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 100 Def Volcarona: 135-159 (36.1 - 42.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk burned Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 100 Def Volcarona: 294-346 (78.8 - 92.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Protean burned Greninja Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 100 Def Volcarona: 246-290 (65.9 - 77.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Mold Breaker burned Excadrill Rock Tomb vs. 248 HP / 100 Def Volcarona: 168-198 (45 - 53%) -- 30.5% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Excadrill: 356-422 (98.6 - 116.8%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after burn damage (keep in mind the Focus Sash, though)

Team(mates) support
A way to get past Heatran and SR is mandatory.

Cool Volc my friend dann3 made, this bulky volc lets you beat pex actually and can be more useful than regular bulky volc sometimes. Btw, these EVs are the EVs you should use for any bulky volc as you get the maximum amount of investment, and you're also able to setup on defensive lando EQs (you never get 2hkod) and u also outspeed ash gren at +1.

I'm sorry for such a big delay guys, this week was really busy for me. Anyway, in order to break the tie between Cold Heat and Defensive Utility, I vote for the former. And this concludes the voting; congratulations to DrPumpkinz for winning! Your submission will be added to the Hall of Fame soon. Ok, we're moving to the next Cycle!

Cycle Fifteen - Ferrothorn
:sm/ferrothorn:

Finally our spiky guy is here! You know well that Ferrothorn is one of the few viable Spikes setters in OU with amazing defensive utility provided by its solid typing and base defensive stats. Ferrothorn isn't really passive either; between its high-BP STABs in Power Whip and Gyro Ball as well as other useful options like Leech Seed, Thunder Wave, and Knock Off, it can pull off some real damage and greatly annoy the opposition. Ok guys, I'm interested in which sets you can show here!

Banned Sets

The deadline is Sunday 1st of September. Good luck!

worry seed + block ferro

:sm/Ferrothorn:
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 SpD
Sassy Nature

- Worry Seed
- Toxic
- Block

- Power Whip

Ferrothorn is capable of trapping Reuniclus with Block, when Reuniclus wants to use Ferrothorn as set-up fodder.
Ferrothorn can also use Worry Seed on Reuniclus to cripple it down with
Toxic afterwards, Worry Seed basically blocks its Ability in Magic Guard and changes it to Insomnia, so this way allows Ferrothorn to break through Reuniclus.
It can also help on this way against another pretty fat pokémon, Chansey.
Chaney has to worry about this Ferrothorn set as it can't just switch into this Ferrothorn especially and set-up its own hazards.
Also when Chansey gets blocked and Toxiced it can get whittled down slowly but surely with the help of Iron Barbs and Power Whip, which both do damage either passive or active.
Leftovers allows Ferrothorn to have some kind of longevity against Chansey -
so withn Iron barbs and Power Whip + the Toxic turns Chansey has to either use Soft Boiled in the long run or attack with Seismic Toss, but this causes damage due to Iron Barbs.
In general giving certain pokémon the ability Insomnia is a great idea as it can help against bulky set-up mons such as Reuniclus. As OLT is going on with the many Reuniclus on balance or (semi)-stall teams this could be a good way to help against Reuniclus and some other mons.

Choice Band

Ferrothorn @ Choice Band
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Bulldoze
- Explosion/Spikes

This is a old classic lure set that turns Ferrothorn into a wallbreaker thanks to its high base power moves. This set took a big hit in Gen 7 thanks to the introduction of Kartana but its still a fun lure set. Bulldoze is the main appeal of this set as choice band gives it the power to OHKO standard Magnezone and Offensive Heatran on the switch while putting a massive dent into SpD Heatran. The last slot is Explosion to blast through Zapdos or any non Steel or Rock type for that matter. Spikes can be used in the last slot if you think having spikes up is more important than just killing one pokemon. This can also be used on Trick Room teams if you really want to.

Trick Room Abusing Ferro

:sm/Ferrothorn:
Ferrothorn @ Grassium Z/ Normalium Z
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Explosion/Bulldoze
- Swords Dance

This Ferrothorn aims to abuse Trick Room and become a threatening Wallbreaker while it is up. With swords Dance and it's natural bulk Ferro can easily boost up and make use of it's great stab combination to hit many common defensive threats such as toxapex, tapu bulu, clefable, tapu fini, gliscor and rotom-w. Explosion assures Ferrothorn a kill and let's you get more mileage out of it once trick room Ends, on the other Hand bulldoze handles heartran Magnezone and certain magearna. Grassium Z is used handle lando and it's intimidate more easily while normalium z can be used to break past Zapdos, AV Tangrowth, The Charizards, Volcarona and Kommo-o without killing yourself. Life orb can be use to replace the Z move in case the trick room Team really Needs it for magearna.

Side Note: The 4 defense Ev's guarantee ferrothorn to survive one banded sacred sword from kartana
