Hardest part of the meta-game for you to understand!

I would honestly have to say EV's.

When I was still all new too competitive play I didn't fully understand what a good ev spread besides 252/252/6 was. After a long time of getting owned by "bulky" sets I learned that you can spread them out. It was a long difficult path though.

The point of the topic is asking what was the hardest part of the competitive scene for you? It could be from any where from typing to not being able to predict, and everything in between.

This topic isn't to be like "I never had trouble with anything, ever" that is a lie and we know it. We all were noobs at one point, like to see where most of the trouble really starts.
Bringing back old threads to see the hardest part of the meta-game for them to understand.

My own hardest part to learn was finding out what Pocket Monsters did and how to use them.

Hardest part? Making a team of 6 pokemon to take on ~493 other pokemon and every possible set they could be running. Granted that some are banned and some are not a problem, there's still a lot to consider and it is tough to comprehend and execute. I've still yet to do it.

Haha, gotta love the Gen threads.

EV's were without a doubt the hardest for me to understand, now I get them and quite a bit of all the Metagames (except that blasted NuU). Yeah, just distributing EV's that allowed for the max sweeping potential / defense potential.

For me it was always the Evs too. Not far behind is always building a successful team for any tier; something that still haunts me.

I always thought that keeping up with what was the biggest threat was the most anoyying part. then again, I had a big hiateas in battling on shoddy just around when platinum came out and winning was impossible for the first few matches

For me, it was always making a good team, as I didn't get "either all-out offensive or all-out stall" until Platinum started.

Actually battling, I mean, executing strategy and stuff. I may be able to make some okay teams, but man, battling-wise I have barely progressed at all since I started playing competitive D/P over a year ago and can't consistently win due to skill to the point where I've given up on trying to just make rating on suspect ladder. Thought that'd just be something that came with time, but...

Synergy, first off discovering how good it is then balancing my wanting to use Pokemon i like (to an extent) to make well balanced teams

This would be exactly me, LOL!

I always thought the metagame and the actual game were different. Things like EV's and IV's are part of the actual game. The metagame is more like "what are the current trends, what is the most popular kind of team, what pokemon are useful/not useful in the games current competitive state." The metagame is more like the competitive aspect of the game (meta- meaning
"going beyond or higher, transcending; used to from terms designating an area of study whose purpose is to examine the nature, assumptions, structure, etc. of a specific field).

If we're are talking about the actual game, EV's are easy, IV's are difficult to grasp at first, and they make life hell if you want pokemon that are exceptional. I get the whole genes of a pokemon thing, just determining them and breeding so the parents pass down the rights ones are things that made me sell my Leaf Green/Ruby/Diamond back.

For the metagame, team synergy is and always will be the most difficult part of building a team. And what Starman said.

Synergy, and being a perfectionist does not help at all. I'm never sure about my team and even get afraid sometimes when I start a battle, it's like "omg I only got 2 Tyranitar counters, he'll rape me". Well, it was not difficult to understand, but it is a real pain for me. ._.

There's is some kind of quirky equivalent exchange with this game...

The expertise does little for me when I actually enter the battlefield...

I am one that has a slow experience gain if you know what I mean.

Providing a check to all the sets most common pokes use.
eg. I can deal with DDMence but get royally screwed by Specsmence.

Stat EXP in the GSC system. That was a bit messy for me at the time, I found the EV system made a lot more sense, despite in reality being the same thing. Now I'd say finding a use for support specialists is the hardest thing for me.

Solid team building, I still can't build a team from scratch, I just normally go with goodstuff teams on wifi.....

This. So lets cut it out with "EVs" and other stuff and kick off some actual discussion

What pokemon were "good" and what pokemon were "bad"

I remember starting my advance career using shit like reversalcham and max sp. attack vaporeon and rain dance rain dish ludicolo. It took me a bit to grasp exactly what pokemon and strategies a good player should be using. When tutoring I find this to be the biggest problem that most players have and actually a fairly easy one to fix. And once a player can differentiate between a bad and a good pokemon the rest just seems to come in stride.

Just posting to say I totally agree with Jabba.
You see lots of RMTs where ppl just don't know what's good and what's not good.
