Chatot (QC 2/3) [WRITTEN]

[OVERVIEW]

As Chatot possesses STAB Boomburst, one of the most powerful moves in the game, it should come as no surprise that Chatot is a fearsome wallbreaker in the ZU tier. It also has a decent speed tier that allows it to become very anti-offense as it is able to outspeed some of the fastest staples like Floatzel, Zebstrika and Rapidash when equipped with a Choice Scarf. Good coverage moves like Heat Wave and Hidden Power Fighting allow Chatot to hit the Steel-types that are resistant to Boomburst. A lack of good Ghost-types in the meta, outside Gourgeist-Super which cannot switch in for obvious reasons, allow Chatot to more freely spam Boomburst without many drawbacks. Access to U-turn allows Chatot to help keep its momentum up. Good offensive support options like Nasty Plot and Encore allow Chatot to function a role as a setup sweeper. Z-Encore boosts Chatot's speed by 1 stage, allowing it to pick how it wants to use its Z move, between boosting speed or dropping a powerful Breakneck Blitz. While Chatot has a good speed tier, it still fails to reach common Pokemon like Electivire and the Silvally forms when not holding a Choice Scarf. Scarf Electivire is one of the most common scarfers in the metagame, greatly hindering Chatot's wallbreaking and sweeping sets.

Moves
========

Boomburst is Chatot's most powerful move and should almost always be clicked except in the case of when hitting a significant resist with an appropriate coverage move or attempting to gain momentum with U-turn. Chatter is a secondary STAB move that has a side effect of confusing the opposing Pokemon. It is also Chatot's most effective option for hitting Gourgeist-XL. Hidden Power Fighting is used to hit Probopass to achieve the 2HKO on the Choice Specs set while also hitting Golem, but without Choice Specs it will not 2HKO most Probopass and Hidden Power Water is suggested to secure a 2HKO on Golem. Hidden Power Water maintains the Probopass coverage even if the damage output is usually only limited to doing decent chip, which is why it is used over Hidden Power Grass. Heat Wave is able to hit Pokemon like Bronzor and Gourgeist-XL, which resist Boomburst. Heat Wave has a chance to OHKO Mawile even with a Choice Scarf. U-turn is great for creating momentum, especially with a fast user like Chatot. It allows Chatot to pivot out of its switch ins and apply pressure to its checks.

Set Details
========

Choice Scarf allows Boomburst to function as a great revenge killer to offense, while Choice Specs let Chatot function as a wallbreaker. When equipped with a Choice Specs, Chatot is able to 2HKO even the most bulky of Special Defense walls with Boomburst, such as Muk, Lickilicky, and Assault Vest Komala, to name a few. It is also able to 2HKO many resists, such as Offensive Golem, Mawile, or Dugtrio-A. Chatot's abilities are mostly useless and Tangled Feet may save you in the case of an opposing Chatot with Chatter. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature allows Chatot to always outspeed unboosted Pokemon like Mr. Mime, Pinsir, Rotom-Fan, and Vigoroth.

Usage Tips
========

When using a Choice Scarf, Chatot should be used to revenge kill many offensive Pokemon, like Floatzel and Zebstrika, with its powerful STAB Boomburst, as it is able to OHKO them. It can also be used as an effective late-game cleaner. The Choice Specs set should aim to come in as much as possible to click Boomburst as it has immense wallbreaking potential. If the opponent has a sturdy Normal resist, then U-turn or the appropriate coverage move should be attempted on the switch to help keep up momentum, since many Normal-resists can set up Stealth Rocks when they force Chatot out. When facing a Grass-type, Boomburst will still do more damage than a super effective Chatter or Heat Wave, except in the case of Gourgeist-Super. Chatot has absolutely no defensive value outside of switching into Ghost- and Ground-type attacks, so try not to bring it in directly onto an attack. Chatot is able to bluff sets depending on the situation because of how versatile it is with items, so bluffing a Choice Scarf to force the opponent out can be useful at times.

Team Options
========

Chatot loves a slow Volt Switch, Parting Shot, or U-turn to help it get in safely, so common users like Silvally forms, Komala, and Probopass are fantastic teammates. Probopass is a particularly amazing teammate as it can trap Steel-types like Metang and opposing Probopass and allow Chatot to be able to break better. Chatot is weak to Stealth Rock and appreciates hazard removal, so Pokemon like Sandslash, Swanna, and many Silvally forms are excellent at removing hazards for it. Conversely, Chatot appreciates hazard support from Pokemon like Golem, Bronzor, Probopass, and Crustle, as it can help it wear down the opponent and easier achieve KOs.

move 4: Heat Wave

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Nasty Plot allows Chatot to become a powerful setup sweeper with an increasingly powerful STAB Boomburst. Encore can be used to help take advantage of more passive Pokemon like Altaria or Pyukumuku or setup users like Muk or Vigoroth. It also helps Chatot function as a stallbreaker. Z Encore will boost Chatot's speed by 1 stage. Chatter can be used as a secondary coverage move that is boosted by STAB and Encore should be used if Chatot wants an option to boost its speed or set up on more passive teams. Heat Wave is still used to hit the Steel-types that resist Boomburst or Chatter, and can nearly OHKO defensive Metang at +2.

Set Details
========

Normalium Z turns Boomburst into an incredibly powerful 200 BP nuke that is boosted by STAB. When used with Encore, it boosts Chatot's speed by 1 stage, allowing it to have an easier time cleaning up. Maximum Special Attack and Speed investment with a Timid nature allows Chatot to hit as hard as possible while being able to outspeed things like Pinsir and Bellossom.

Usage Tips
========

Chatot should aim to set up on passive Pokemon that can't do anything to it, such as a Pokemon choice locked into a Ghost- or Ground-type move. Gourgeist-XL cannot do much damage to Chatot and makes good setup fodder for it. It can also abuse Encore to lock an opponent into a healing or setup move and then Chatot can proceed to set up a Nasty Plot for free. Chatot should not set up until its checks are sufficiently weakened, nor should it use its Z-move too early as using Boomburst at +2 will kill most things anyway. The Z-move is generally used to break through resists when boosted by a Nasty Plot. +2 Breakneck Blitz should be used to break through Lickilicky to prevent being Toxic'd, or bypassing Soundproof Pokemon like Mr. Mime. Z Encore should be used when Chatot wants to destroy offense and sweep through a frailer team, while Breakneck Blitz works best against bulkier teams that need to be broken through.

Team Options
========

Chatot appreciates Pokemon that can weaken and wear down Steel-types, so Pokemon like Electivire and Probopass are great teammates. Chatot has a lot of difficultly breaking through Rock-types and Steel-types that resist all of its moves, so strong Fighting-types like Silvally-Fighting and Monferno or Ground-types like Sandslash and Silvally-Ground can help ease some of these matchups. Water-types like Floatzel and Silvally-Water and Grass-types like Leafeon and Shiftry can also wear down the Rock-type Pokemon that check Chatot. Pivoting support from Pokemon like Komala or Probopass can help bring Chatot into battle safer. Hazard support from Stealth Rocks setters like Golem or Pinsir can help Chatot sweep easier and secure KOs. Komala and Silvally-Fighting invite Gourgeist-XL in, which they can U-turn into Chatot so it can use Gourgeist-XL as setup fodder. Electric-type checks, such as Gourgeist-XL, Sandslash, and Golem, are appreciated to prevent Chatot from being revenge killed easily.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A stallbreaking set using Taunt, Toxic, and Roost can be used but is generally not advised due to Chatot's minimal bulk and the fact that there are better and faster stallbreakers, like Oricorio and Oricorio-E. Substitute can help ease prediction on the Nasty Plot set but is often overshadowed by another coverage or support move. Additionally, an Agility set can be used, but Z-Encore usually provides more utility and the option to have use in more matchups.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Probopass and Alolan Golem**: Probopass is easily Chatot's best check, with high Special Defense and a quad resistance to both Chatter and Boomburst and a neutrality to Heat Wave, but it needs to be careful of a Choice Specs boosted Hidden Power Fighting. Alolan Golem is a similarly good check, resisting all of Chatot's attacks and easily OHKOing in return.

**Specially Defensive Normal Resists**: Pokemon like Specially Defensive Golem and Bronzor resist Boomburst and can come in on Chatot's attacks, but fear some of Chatot's coverage moves.

**Faster Pokemon**: Fast Pokemon like Choice Scarf Electivire and Oricorio can outspeed and OHKO Chatot with their attacks.

**Soundproof Pokemon**: Pokemon with the ability Soundproof, such as Mr. Mime, Hakamo-o, and some Bouffalant variants, completely wall Chatot as Chatot does all its damage through sound-based moves.

Overview
  • Its Speed tier is really not that great, and most Choice Scarf mons can outspeed those mons. I'd rather mention that its Speed tier makes it very fast for a breaker of its caliber, outspeeding Pokemon at a similar powerful (give some examples too, like Pinsir and Mr. Mime. (note: I know both of these have a higher or even significantly higher primary attack stat, but Boomburst is broken)
  • I'd say good Ghosts outside of Gourgeist-XL, which isn't switching in for obvious reasons
  • Electivire is a major mon it fails to outspeed and should be mentioned.
  • Emphasize its really shit bulk. It cannot switch in on anything ever.
  • Mention access to useful moves like Nasty Plot and Encore
Set: Choice Attacker

Moves
  • It's Gourgeist-XL, not Gourgeist. While it's technically a true statement, Gourgeist is irrelevant lol.
  • Mention some calcs for Heat Wave (chance to OHKO Mawile even with Scarf for example)
Set Details
  • Definitely mention some notable stuff Specs lets you do (you mentioned 2HKOing Probo, but what about things that die to Boomburst? Does Muk? Does AV Komala? Does offensive Golem?)
  • It's worth giving some examples of what 252+ lets you outspeed (Mr. Mime is most notable)
Usage Tips
  • Don't mention other Gourgeist formes, they're bad.
  • Mention never switching in on anything. Ever. Period. Bring it in with U-turn/VSwitch/PShot.
Team Options
  • You need solid answers to Pokemon like Golem and Electivire, as they can take advantage of a Choice-locked Chatot.
  • Mention hazards to abuse the switches Chatot forces.
  • Maybe Gourg-XL answers since Pursuit trappers don't necessarily work on it, up to you.
  • Maybe mention Normal spam, up to you.
Set: Nasty Plot

Moves
  • Mention and Chatter and why you should or shouldn't use it over Encore.
  • Mention Z-Encore. +1 Speed is good.
  • Mention some calcs with Heat Wave (OHKOes Metang at +2 after some chip)
  • Give examples of passive Pokemon and setup users.
  • Mention that Encore also allows it to stallbreak to an extent. It's not perfect, but it does the thing.
Set Details
  • Mention Z-Encore
  • Can just repeat while Tangled Feet is the shitty ability we go for.
Usage Tips
  • Examples of passive Pokemon (especially since many of them can annoy Chatot with Toxic)
  • Describe the choice between Z-Encore and Breakneck Blitz (generally destroying offense vs beating up balance)
  • Mention bluffing Choice Scarf
Team Options
  • Mention pivot support
  • Mention hazard removal
  • Mention hazard support to wear things down before Chatot comes in and cleans
  • It's probably better to mention Golem as one of the Ground-types. Also, Silvally-Water is far better than Lapras at wearing down Rock-types.
Other Options
  • Stallbreaking set is just done better by Oricorio and Oricorio-E. Mention that.
  • Agility (double dance) can be mentioned but Z-Encore already does that role and better
Checks and Counters
  • Really important for Probopass answering Chatot is its neutrality to Heat Wave. Mention it.
  • It's Hakamo-o, not Hakomo-o
Nice job overall, QC 1/3

[OVERVIEW]
  • As Chatot possesses STAB Boomburst, one of the most powerful moves in the game, it should come as no surprise that Chatot is a fearsome wallbreaker in the ZU tier.
  • It also has a decent speed tier that allows it to become very anti-offense as it is able to outspeed some of the fastest staples like Floatzel, Zebstrika and Rapidash when equipped with a Choice Scarf.

  • A lack of good Ghost-types in the meta, outside Gourgeist-Super which cannot switch in for obvious reasons, allow Chatot to more freely spam Boomburst without many drawbacks.
  • Access to U-turn allows Chatot to help keep its momentum up and wear down checks. 'Wearing down checks' is more of what its coverage is for.
  • Good offensive support options like Nasty Plot and Encore allow Chatot to function a role as a setup sweeper. It's also important to make note of Z-Encore, since that's another relevant aspect to its niche as a setup sweeper that makes it worth using. Another thing is that this is one of the few sets with decent match up versatility, as it can sweep against offense with faster scarfer remove or break through stall once set up opportunities are present, especially with Breakneck Blitz.
  • Limited bulk and lack of a powerful Flying-type attack make Chatot somewhat easy to take advantage of. The lack of a powerful Flying-type attack isn't really relevant for Boomburst resists that it's trying to beat, since between Heat Wave, HP coverage, Ominous Wind, and Encore it already handles them well enough
  • While Chatot has a good speed tier, it still fails to reach common Pokemon like Electivire and the Silvally forms when not holding a Choice Scarf. There is merit to expanding upon Evire a bit more, since its own Scarf set is one of the most common sets for teams nowadays and so it's a major threat to even Chatot's own Scarf and sweeping sets.

move 1: Boomburst
move 2: Chatter / Hidden Power Fighting / Hidden Power Water Chatter isn't optimal compared to actual coverage on choice sets since these sets have a much greater need for options to get past Boomburst switch-ins. Heat Wave already hits Gourg-XL in any case.
move 3: Heat Wave / Ominous Wind (covers Bronzor and Gourgeist also while hitting Mr. Mime [relevant bc not forced to constantly U-turn anymore] and Frillish. While Frillish is much less common, it's still a ranked defensive threat, all things considered. This move is only really recommended on Specs though.)

  • Hidden Power Fighting is used to hit Probopass to achieve the 2HKO on the Choice Specs set while also hitting Golem CS still 2hkoes offensive probo variants, but without Choice Specs it will not 2HKO most Probopass and Hidden Power Water is suggested to secure a 2HKO on Golem important to note that hp water maintains the probopass coverage even if the damage output is usually only limited to doing decent chip, since that explains the reader why it wouldn't instead just use hp grass. Also, you may also value the mention of hp water generally ohkoing anyway w/ sr barring max hp variants on the scarf set.
  • Heat Wave is able to hit Steel-types like Metang and Mawile which resist Boomburst. Heat Wave has a chance to OHKO Mawile even with a Choice Scarf, and will also OHKO Dugtrio-A. XL and Bronzor are the most valuable target mentions for Heat Wave, all things considered
  • Ominous Wind information should be here.
  • U-turn is great for creating momentum, especially with a fast user like Chatot. It would help to mention examples of mons Chatot struggles to reliably damage to (Soundproof mons, bulky ghost types not named XL, special walls if scarf, etc.), since that goes into more context of why it will find itself using U-turn more over just boomburst or coverage.

  • Chatot is weak to Stealth Rock and appreciates hazard removal, so Pokemon like Sandslash, Swanna, and many Silvally forms are excellent at removing hazards for it. Komala's a better spinner in most relevant ways barring Sandslash's rock resist and electric immunity. It's fine to keep Sandslash for those reasons alone, but Komala can lure Gourg-XL with Toxic, and something like Torkoal, while niche, outright threatens it while setting up rocks itself. Granted, these are pretty optional examples, but Choice Chatot values Boomburst stops being removed and they're more unique ideas to go off of.
  • Conversely, Chatot appreciates hazard support from Pokemon like Golem, Bronzor, Probopass, and Crustle, as it can help it wear down the opponent and easier achieve KOs. Bronzor is also pretty decent at checking the Soundproof dudes like mime and bouff

    Pursuit trappers by extension are good at beating Bronzor too. Knock Off users to deal with Bronzor + Bulky Ghost types that aren't XL are cool to mention to. There's also something to be said about pairing with strong Electric-type checks/Volt immunies like Raichu and Electivire that discourage clicking them and have sets that can break down defensive teams to aid Scarf while appreciating U-turn support.

move 3: Chatter / Encore I disagree with this slash because Encore is one of the main cruxes of the set, allowing for additional set up opportunities and to boost its Speed with Normalium Z to enhance its sweeping potential. Chatter is usually often competing with Heat Wave either way since they hit a lot of the same targets, only difference now is in this meta it'd rather opt for Heat Wave to better threaten Bronzor.

You would mainly want to use Breakneck Blitz to break through Lickilicky at +2 esp since you eat a Toxic otherwise, and it can't be played around with Encore thanks to Oblivious. Otherwise, Breakneck Blitz is mainly going to be useful for bypassing Soundproof Pokemon.
Good at revenge killing certain slower attackers due to how strong Boomburst is, can scare away fast mons by bluffing scarf + using that scare for set up opportunities (risky, so Chatot must decipher when its good to take advantage of that), etc.

  • Hazard support from Stealth Rocks setters like Golem or Pinsir can help Chatot sweep easier and secure KOs.
- Electric-type checks/absorbers are worth its own section too
- This set is one of the few times that Alolem Golem works exceptionally well alongside, trapping both Probopass and Bronzor solidly. Its main set (CB) also frees up the Z-slot that Chatot desires, something that Probopass can't if it wants to trap both at maximum efficiency.
- Choice Scarf Silvally is one of the only other relevant scarfers outspeeding Chatot, so a Normal resist with a good MU with that is valuable too.

**Specially Defensive Normal Resists**: Pokemon like Specially Defensive Golem and Metang Bronzor's a preferred mention since it's a more meta-relevant example and is much more specially bulky resist Boomburst and can come in on Chatot's attacks, but fear some of Chatot's coverage moves.

**Faster Pokemon**: Fast Pokemon like Choice Scarf Electivire and Oricorio can outspeed and OHKO Chatot with their attacks. Evire can also outspeed a Speed-boosted Chatot. Choice Scarf Silvally-Normal is an issue in this regard too.

**Soundproof Pokemon**: Pokemon with the ability Soundproof, such as Mr. Mime, Hakamo-o, and some Bouffalant variants, completely wall Chatot as Chatot does all its damage through sound-based moves.

QC 2/3. I've noticed a lot of Metang mentions, to which I would advise considering prioritizing Bronzor and Probopass mentions instead in the context of those. That would help the analysis more since you'll be going more towards how it would fare against the more relevant threats in the meta. :toast:

While Chatot has a good speed tier, it still fails to reach common Pokemon like Electivire and the Silvally forms when not holding a Choice Scarf. Scarf Electivire is one of the most common scarfers in the metagame, greatly hindering Chatot's wallbreaking and sweeping sets.
Personally, I'd mention Swanna somewhere in the overview as Chatot is able to outspeed it with a scarf but cannot without one. Additionally, Swanna is probably more of an offensive stable then Float or Zeb is.

If Probopass isn't as relevant as it once was I'd mention Hidden Power Fighting after you mention HP water.

We don't have Dugtrio-Alola any more
Usage Tips
========

Mention Swanna in the 1st sentence.
Team Options
========

Mention Golem-A over Probopass in both cases in this section.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

========

Again put Golem-A over Probo
Include Combusken when you talk about Strong fighting types

Other Options
=============

We don't have Oricorio-E anymore so definetley get rid of that
Checks and Counters
===================

A lack of good Ghost-types in the meta, outside Gourgeist-Super which cannot switch in for obvious reasons, allow Chatot to more freely spam Boomburst without many drawbacks. adjust this line to take silv ghost into consideration.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

It is also able to 2HKO many resists, such as Offensive Golem, Mawile, or Dugtrio-A. rip dugtrio alola Chatot's abilities are mostly useless and Tangled Feet may save you in the case of an opposing Chatot with Chatter. Maximum Speed investment with a Timid nature allows Chatot to always outspeed unboosted Pokemon like Mr. Mime, Pinsir, Rotom-Fan, and Vigoroth.

Usage Tips

If the opponent has a sturdy Normal resist, then U-turn or the appropriate coverage move should be attempted on the switch to help keep up momentum, since many Normal-resists such as... can set up Stealth Rocks when they force Chatot out.
