Suicune
QC:
[3/3]
GP: [2/2]

[OVERVIEW]

Suicune is a great setup sweeper thanks to its solid defensive typing and natural bulk, which also allows it to check prominent threats such as Scizor and Mega Aerodactyl. Furthermore, with access to both Rest and Calm Mind, Suicune can also function as a fairly sustainable bulky sweeper. Because of its ability, Pressure, and its potential to set up fairly easily, Suicune is able to threaten defensive teams a lot. Pressure also allows it to break through certain Pokemon that would normally check it, such as Volcanion. Suicune also has a very decent base Speed stat for a bulky Pokemon, allowing it to hit or set up against Pokemon like Mamoswine and Togekiss. However, since it doesn't have access to reliable recovery, Suicune is forced to rely on Leftovers or Rest in order to stay healthy. It's also held back by its weakness to Electric and Grass, which are common typings, making it easily exploitable by Pokemon like Mega Manectric and Mega Sceptile.

[SET]

move 4: Substitute
item: Leftovers
ability: Pressure
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Calm Mind boosts Suicune's Special Attack and Special Defense, turning it into a threatening sweeper. Protect is primarily used to PP stall opposing Pokemon, although it also helps to keep Suicune healthy in conjunction with Leftovers. Additionally, it's also useful to scout for moves and Choice-locked Pokemon. Scald has a decent chance to burn foes. Substitute provides Suicune with a lot more opportunities to set up and PP stall slower and more defensive Pokemon, but it can also avoid status moves like Toxic from Pokemon such as Blissey and Alomomola. Additionally, the combination of Substitute and Calm Mind makes it a lot harder for special attackers to break its Substitute while also protecting Suicune from potential critical hits.

Set Details
========

216 Speed EVs and a Timid Nature allow Suicune to outspeed base 80s, like Togekiss and Mamoswine. Maximum HP investment gives Suicune 101 HP Substitutes, which prevents Seismic Toss from breaking them in one hit. With the given Special Defense, Amoonguss's Giga Drain and Rotom-W's Volt Switch can't break a Substitute when Suicune is at +1. Leftovers is the item of choice to provide Suicune a form of passive recovery. Pressure is used to PP stall and wear down bulky Pokemon like Blissey.

Usage Tips
========

This set is very effective against bulky teams. However, it should be played carefully. Suicune shouldn't be used to sponge hits throughout the match, as its effectiveness depends on how high its HP is. Against offensive teams, Suicune finds setup opportunities against Pokemon like Choice Scarf Hydreigon and non-Psyshock Latias, and it's able to PP stall them with ease. Avoid switching Suicune in on a potential Knock Off, Trick, or Switcheroo, because Leftovers is Suicune's main source of recovery, and it will get worn down very quickly once it loses it. It will also limit Suicune's ability to set up a Substitute and PP stall. Set up a Substitute against passive Pokemon such as Alomomola that rely on Toxic or other status moves to damage Suicune. Furthermore, once Suicune is behind a Substitute, it's safe to set up a Calm Mind against Pokemon like Blissey and non-Seed Bomb Amoonguss. However, avoid using Calm Mind against faster Pokemon like Mega Sceptile and Celebi, since they can easily force it out.

Team Options
========

Suicune can fit on bulky offense and balance teams that appreciate Suicune's ability to break through bulkier teams. Wish support from Pokemon like Sylveon and Alomomola helps Suicune by increasing its longevity, as it lacks reliable recovery. Cleric support from Pokemon like Togekiss and Blissey is also very useful, since Suicune is heavily crippled by status. Furthermore, Suicune hates switching in on hazards, as it gets easily worn down, so entry hazard removers such as Tentacruel, Latias, and Scizor are great partners for it. Toxic Spikes can wear down opposing Pokemon, which works well with Suicune's ability to PP stall. Thus, Toxic Spikes setters such as Tentacruel and Nihilego pair well with Suicune. Since some of Suicune's checks are grounded, Sticky Web pairs well with it, so Pokemon like Smeargle are good teammates. Ground-types such as Mega Steelix and Krookodile can easily check Electric-types such as Mega Manectric that normally force Suicune out. Steel-types such as Mega Aggron and Scizor have good synergy with Suicune, as they can sponge Grass-type attacks and check Pokemon like Latias, while Suicune checks the Fire-types that can threaten them. Pursuit traps problematic Pokemon like Latias and Celebi and is one of the ways to support this set, making it easier for Suicune to sweep. Thus, Pokemon like Alolan Muk make good teammates. Grounded Poison-types such as the aforementioned Tentacruel are able to absorb Toxic Spikes, which are extremely detrimental to Suicune's sweeping potential.

[SET]
name: CroCune
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Rest
move 3: Sleep Talk
move 4: Scald
item: Leftovers / Waterium Z
ability: Pressure
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Calm Mind turns Suicune into a threatening bulky sweeper, boosting both its Special Attack and Special Defense. Rest is Suicune's main form of recovery, healing it instantly in one turn. Rest is also able to cure Suicune of any inflicted status condition. Sleep Talk prevents Suicune from becoming overly passive when using Rest, providing it the chance to use any of its other moves while asleep. Scald is Suicune's only attacking move, being able to spread burns and weaken opposing Pokemon.

Set Details
========

The given Speed investment allows Suicune to outspeed Adamant Scizor and hit it before it can U-turn out. The rest of the EVs are placed in HP and Defense to maximize Suicune's defensive capabilities. Leftovers provides Suicune with a form of passive recovery, further increasing its longevity and ability to switch into opposing threats. Waterium Z can be used instead of Leftovers, providing Suicune with a strong attack that is able to OHKO Pokemon like Quagsire after some prior damage. Additionally, it prevents Suicune from being crippled by Trick or Switcheroo or having its item removed by Knock Off. With Pressure, Suicune is able to outstall Pokemon like Blissey and Alomomola with ease.

Usage Tips
========

This set can be used as a pivot throughout the battle due to its great defensive capabilities and access to recovery. Only start setting up with Suicune late-game once Pokemon that can check it, like Celebi and Mega Sceptile, are either weakened or removed. Furthermore, if it's carrying Leftovers, avoid switching Suicune in on a potential Knock Off, Trick, or Switcheroo, since it'll have a much harder time switching in if its Leftovers is removed. Use Rest carefully, since it gives up a lot of momentum, and the opponent can take advantage of that. Scald can be used early-game to wear down and weaken foes.

Team Options
========

Suicune fits best on bulky teams that appreciate Suicune's ability to switch into a number of threats. Since it forces a lot of switches, pairing Suicune with hazard setters is ideal. Therefore, Pokemon like Mega Steelix, Tentacruel, and Klefki make good partners. Pursuit trappers like Alolan Muk are also valuable partners, since they can trap Pokemon like Latias and Celebi. Furthermore, cleric support from Pokemon like Togekiss is appreciated, since it can heal Suicune from sleep. Steel-types like Mega Aggron and the aforementioned Klefki have good synergy with Suicune, as they can check Grass-types like Mega Sceptile and Celebi and Pokemon like Latias and Refresh Mega Altaria that normally force it out, while Suicune is able to check Fire-types like Infernape and Entei. Pokemon that can sponge Electric-type attacks such as Mega Sceptile and Hydreigon make good partners for Suicune, as Electric-types can force it out. Hazards can limit Suicune's ability to pivot around, so entry hazard removers like the aforementioned Tentacruel and Latias make for good teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A set with Roar that capitalizes on using Suicune as a dedicated phazer is an option, but it would be wasting Suicune's sweeping capabilities. Additionally, Roar is also an option on bulky Calm Mind variants of Suicune, allowing it to beat opposing setup sweepers like Latias more easily, although Suicune becomes overly passive and easily pressured by many other threats if it forgoes Sleep Talk. Suicune can run an offensive Calm Mind set with Hydro Pump / Ice Beam / Hidden Power Electric or Tailwind, and Waterium Z or Leftovers. This set is capable of bluffing one of the bulkier ones, especially if it's carrying Leftovers. Toxic is an option, which cripples Pokemon that are immune to Scald, such as Seismitoad, Mantine, and Jellicent. However, Suicune usually doesn't have room for Toxic on any of its sets.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-types**: Pokemon like offensive Rotom-W and Mega Manectric can force Suicune out with their STAB moves. However, Mega Manectric dislikes switching on a direct hit.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Seed Bomb Amoonguss, Mega Sceptile, and Celebi don't fear much from Suicune and can threaten it with their STAB moves. However, a Scald burn can cripple Amoonguss a lot, since it can no longer break a Substitute with Seed Bomb.

**Phazers and Haze Users**: Pokemon with access to Roar, Haze, and Clear Smog such as Empoleon, Tentacruel, Mantine, and Amoonguss are able to prevent Suicune from setting up. However, if Suicune manages to set up a Substitute, Amoonguss is unable to effectively stop it, as it's forced to play mind games between Substitute and Calm Mind.

**Water-immune Pokemon**: Since Scald is Suicune's only attacking move, Pokemon that are immune to Water-type moves, such as Mantine and Jellicent, can wall Suicune with ease and take advantage of it. However, they must be wary of Toxic. Additionally, it's worth noting that certain Water-immune Pokemon, such as Seismitoad and Volcanion, are prone to being PP stalled.

**Opposing Calm Mind Users**: Opposing Calm Mind users such as Latias can set up alongside Suicune and beat it one-on-one. If Suicune has Roar, it can phaze and prevent them from setting up, however.

**Residual Damage**: With no proper form of recovery, any form of residual damage, such as poison and hazards, is able to wear down Suicune very quickly and can cripple its ability to either set up or pivot into opposing threats.

**Knock Off**: Knock Off users such as Krookodile and Alolan Muk can remove Suicune's Leftovers, which limits its ability to set up.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Strong wallbreakers such as Mamoswine and Choice Band Terrakion can overwhelm Suicune with offensive pressure, as it lacks reliable recovery.

Alright, so I discussed this with Hikari and Bouff, and we agreed that VinCune (Calm Mind + Protect) should be the only set to be written about, with RoarCune and CroCune joining offensive CM in Other Options. We appreciate the effort you put into the other sets, though; the other sets are honestly just kinda ass in this meta (both before and after drops). As a result, the overview would need to be changed a bit, since it doesn't function as a wall per se anymore.

Overview
  • first point: I'd just change it to how it's a great setup sweeper thanks to its typing and natural bulk, which also allows it to check threats like Scizor and Mega Aerodactyl when needed.
  • third point: I wouldn't be so direct as to say it threatens defensive teams by PP stalling. Generally speaking, the first two points combined with the ability Pressure is what's putting pressure on defensive teams as a whole, as some can just get swept really easily the moment VinCune gets a free setup (especially in conjunction with Toxic Spikes, but don't mention that here).
  • fifth point: Mention Grass-types too, which is also a decently common offensive type.
  • add point: mention its decent base 85 Speed, which is honestly great for such a bulky Pokemon, letting it outspeed and hit or setup against Pokemon like Mamoswine and Togekiss.
Moves
  • protect point: minor nitpick, but when you talk about scouting, it's not just about scouting for coverage moves that might force it out, but scouting for moves as a whole like for choice-locked pokemon.
  • substitute point: it's pretty important to mention how calm mind + substitute also makes it a lot harder for special attackers to break the substitute, and it provides some sort of insurance against possible critical hits. The move as a whole generally gives it a lot more turns to set up against slower and more defensive pokemon, which ties in well with your original point about pp stalling those defenisve mons (and avoiding status ofc)
Set Details
  • this is completely optional at this point in time, but I doubt Rotom-W is going to go anywhere soon, so you could mention how the 40 SpD makes it so Rotom-W's Volt Switch is a lot less likely to break the Substitute at +1.
  • the issue with just saying pressure PP stalls foes is that it doesn't really tell a reader what exactly are you trying to PP stall, or mainly anyway. It's not like you're going to try and PP stall a mega sceptile for example, so talk about PP stalling and wearing down bulkier pokemon like Blissey. yeah, it does sound kind of redundant, but we both know that's literally the point of VinCune, so might as well beat that in.
Usage Tips
  • Mention Trick / Switcheroo alongside the Knock Off point for the same reason.
  • "Suicune should mainly be used as a stallbreaker.": Honestly, I'm not too sold on labelling it a stallbreaker because it just does well against bulkier builds in general, so I'd probably just say that it's very effective against most bulky teams.
  • When talking about using Calm Mind against Pokemon like Blissey and Amoonguss, I'd just link it to the Substitute point, since you typically wouldn't be setting up a Calm Mind against a Blissey unless you're already behind a Substitute and against Amoonguss, if they haven't put anything to sleep, you're playing games of whether they'd Spore or Giga Drain, so usually you'd be already behind a Substitute by the time Amoonguss switches in.
  • You definitely have to mention playing with the set carefully, since the effectiveness of the set depends on how high its HP is, so you shouldn't be blindly switching it in to sponge hits if you're going to want to set up with Suicune later on.
  • I'd order the points this way: being good against bulkier builds -> play with the set carefully, since it needs the HP -> avoid letting it lose its item via Knock Off or Trick / Switcheroo -> when to use Substitute and Calm Mind afterwards -> not using Calm Mind against stuff like Celebi.
Team Options
  • Mention Grounded Poison-types, which are able to absorb Toxic Spikes, since they're especially detrimental to Suicune's sweeping potential.
Other Options
  • Put the RoarCune and CroCune sets here and talk about what they do and why they're not too good in this meta.
  • For the offensive Calm Mind set, I wouldn't say specifically to give it a Waterium Z because honestly, the Leftovers even on that set makes a huge difference too, so mention that as well. I'd at least mention the the moves of Calm Mind / Hydro Pump / Ice Beam though, with the last move usually being a toss up of like Hidden Power Electric / Tailwind or whatever else depending on the team. Finally, talk about how the set, especially with Leftovers, can be used to bluff one of the bulkier sets.
Checks and Counters
  • Grass-types: what does a Scald burn cripping Amoonguss mean? Specifically, you should talk about how when it's burned, Seed Bomb is no longer able to break Suicune's Substitute.
  • Phazers and Haze users: Mention Amoonguss being unable to effectively stop Suicune from setting up if it manages to get a Substitute up against it, since it's basically playing mind games of Substitute vs. Calm Mind at that point.
  • Opposing Calm Mind Users: I'm going to have to dissect this section a little more, since we're only looking at VinCune for the most part now. I'd remove the Slowbro mention because while Psyshock can do a lot to Suicune as it sets up alongside the other, VinCune can honestly just stall it out of Psyshocks. Slowbro would beat CroCune, but again, we're not really looking at it here anymore. Calm Mind Latias can stay because it's still one of the more effective checks to VinCune.
Long check again, and sorry that this is long overdue, but consider this QC 1/3

You may want to add some other examples here and there depending on how the meta settles and what remains, but overall, Suicune shouldn't be changing too much, which is why I even felt comfortable QCing this at this point in time.

Alright, Suicune is another important mon so I'll give this an AM check as well:

"* Suicune is a great setup sweeper thanks to it's solid defensive typing and natural bulk, which also allows it to check prominent threats such as Scizor and Mega Aerodactyl.
* As a result of it's defensive capabilities, Suicune finds many setup opportunities."

These two feel a bit redundant to me. I'd merge them.

-Mention Toxic Spikes in Team Options of vincune, in its own section. They're not what they are in OU with the steels and poisons running about, alongside actually good hazard control, but they are still damn well incredible alongside Vincune.

-Hazards imo deserve their own section in C&C, as they wear Suicune down incredibly easily. Either this, or residual damage gets its own section, with it encompassing hazards, weather, etc..

I think the above is fine to implement. Regarding the first part about merging points though, it's not that big of a deal since it's going to be written into paragraphs anyway, but if anything, it's more of a GP thing (changing the second line to just "As a result, Suicune finds..." would already fix it though fwiw).

1Surgeon so more than a month after my first check, the meta has changed, and QC feels like CroCune deserves a set of its own now instead of just an option in OO. Sorry for asking you to remove that then, but if you could write the sections for that again, it'd be highly appreciated.

Overview

State some examples of pokemon cune struggles with due to its weaknesses to electric and grass.

Mention on the pressure point that due to its ability it is able to muscle past many of its would-be checks under certain conditions (examples including like volcanion etc)

vincune

Usage Tips

Give details on how to play Vincune versus offense, as this is severely lacking throughout the analysis so far. Mention that it can set up on and pp stall certain special attackers (non-psyshock latias, scarf hydre, togekiss), sub+protect cycling to wear down the pp of certain moves like close combat from cobalion and infernape, and any other tips that you can think of to help carry suicune through a match versus an offensive team.

In the don't-set-up-cm-vs-offensive-mons point just replace the latias mention here with some other pokemon that it doesn't want to cm on since some latias sets actually lose 1v1 vs vincune

Team Options

Mention as a first point what playstyles suicune functions on, which in this case are bulky offense and balance.

Add webs support from smeargle as an option because vincune is actually extremely scary under webs.

Add some more examples within your team options which reflect suicune's ability to be run on bulky offense in addition to balance.

crocune

Usage Tips

Give examples of the checks to suicune that you mentioned in that point.

Team Options

Add cleric support, as this lets you heal your sleep status in a pinch.

C&C
you'd probably be fine merging the hazards point and the status point into just "residual damage"

Make special note that several water-immune pokemon, especially Volcanion, are susceptible to being pp stalled into struggling if they attempt to 1v1 Suicune.

You'll definitely want to mention Mega Sceptile as a grass-type.

Add a sentence or two about CroCune to the Overview. Mention that that set essentially allows Suicune to function as a self-sustaining bulky sweeper with a lot of defensive utility.

In the CroCune set details, mention that Waterium Z allows Suicune to switch into Knock Off without losing an item.

Mention Rest + Sleep Talk + Roar as a set in Other Options.

QC 3/3.

**Grass-types**: Pokemon like Seed Bomb Amoonguss, Mega Sceptile, and Celebi don't fear much from Suicune, (RC) and can threaten it with their STAB moves. However, a Scald burn can cripple Amoonguss a lot, since it can no longer break a Substitute with Seed Bomb.

**Phazers and Haze Users**: Pokemon with access to Roar, Haze, (AC) and or Clear Smog such as Empoleon, Tentacruel, Mantine, and Amoonguss are able to prevent Suicune from setting up.

**Opposing Calm Mind Users**: Opposing Calm Mind users such as Latias can setup set up alongside Suicune and beat it one-on-one. Still, If Suicune has Roar, it can phaze and prevent them from setting up, (AC) however.

**Residual Damage**: With no proper form of recovery, any form of residual damage, such as poison and hazards, are is able to wear down Suicune very quickly and can cripple its ability to either set up, (RC) or pivot into opposing threats.

**Knock Off**: Knock Off users such as Krookodile, Weavile, (not in uu) and Alolan Muk can remove Suicune's Leftovers, (AC) which limits its ability to setup set up.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Strong wallbreakers such as Mamoswine and Choice Band Terrakion can overwhelm Suicune with offensive pressure, (AC) as it lacks reliable recovery.

GP 2/2
[OVERVIEW]

Suicune is a great setup sweeper thanks to its solid defensive typing and natural bulk, which also allows it to check prominent threats such as Scizor and Mega Aerodactyl. As a result, it finds many setup opportunities. (implied / repeated / redundant) Furthermore, with access to both Rest and Calm Mind, Suicune can also function as a fairly sustainable bulky sweeper.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

216 Speed EVs and a Timid Nature allow Suicune to outspeed base 80s, like Togekiss and Mamoswine. Maximum HP investment gives Suicune 101 HP Substitutes, which prevent prevents Seismic Toss from breaking them in one hit.

Usage Tips
========

Avoid switching Suicune in on a potential Knock Off, Trick, or Switcheroo, (AC) because Leftovers is Suicune's main source of recovery, and it will get worn down very quickly once it loses it.

========

As such, Thus, Toxic Spikes setters such as Tentacruel and Nihilego pair well with Suicune. Since some of its Suicune's checks are grounded, Sticky Web pairs well with Suicune it, so Sticky Web setters, such as Pokemon like Smeargle (RC) are good teammates. Ground-types such as Mega Steelix and Krookodile make good partners for Suicune, as they can easily check Electric-types such as Mega Manectric that normally force Suicune out. As such, Thus, Pokemon like Alolan Muk make good teammates. Grounded Poison-types such as the aforementioned Tentacruel make good partners for Suicune, since they're are able to absorb Toxic Spikes, which are extremely detrimental to Suicune's sweeping potential.

Moves
========

Scald is Suicune's only attacking move, since it's being able to spread burns and weaken opposing Pokemon.

Set Details
========

The given Speed investment allows Suicune to outspeed Adamant Scizor and hit it before it can U-turn out. The rest of the EVs are placed in HP and Defense to maximize Suicune's defensive capabilities. Leftovers provides Suicune with a form of passive recovery, further increasing its longevity and ability to switch-in to switch into opposing threats. Waterium Z can be used instead of Leftovers, providing Suicune with a strong attack (RC) being that is able to OHKO Pokemon like Quagsire after some prior damage. Additionally, it prevents Suicune from being crippled by Trick or Switcheroo (RC) or having its item removed by Knock Off. With Pressure, Suicune is able to outstall Pokemon like Blissey and Alomomola with ease.

Usage Tips
========

Use Rest carefully, since it loses gives up a lot of momentum, and the opponent can take advantage of that. Scald can be used early-game to wear down and weaken foes.

Team Options
========

Suicune fits best on bulky teams that appreciate Suicune's ability to switch into a number of threats. Since it forces a lot of switch-ins, switches, pairing Suicune with hazard setters is ideal. Pokemon that can sponge Electric-type attacks such as Mega Sceptile and Hydreigon make good partners for Suicune, as they Electric-types (?) can force it out. Hazards can limit Suicune's ability to pivot around, so entry hazard removers like the aforementioned Tentacruel and Mega Latias make for good teammates.

Other Options
=============
