SM RU Core Builder

(insert banner here)

A core is a group of usually 2 or 3 Pokemon together that work toward a specific goal. These goals include breaking through opposing teams (Offensive), covering each other's weaknesses while providing team with a solid set of resistances (Defensive), and checking important threats in the RU metagame while exerting offensive pressure upon the opposing team (Balanced).

The aim of this project is to make the users build core around a particular component. It could be a core that fits a particular playstyle (ex: Snorlax + Gligar would fit a stall team as it provides a great defensive backbone that provides the team with hazard control), one that uses a particular strategy (Froslass + Doublade + Nidoqueen would fit a spikes stacking team as it provides hazards, ways to prevent them from being removed), or a core that includes a particular typing (Kommo-o + Heracross would fit a fighting spam as Kommo-o weakens fighting resists for Heracross to sweep).

Here is how a post in this thread should look like:

Kommo-o @ Choice Specs
Ability: Soundproof
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Clanging Scales
- Focus Blast
- Flash Cannon
- Flamethrower

Heracross @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Facade
- Knock Off

This is a core utilising SD Flame Orb Heracross and Choice Specs Kommo-o. Kommo-o hits extremely hard with Specs and weakens several of it's and Heracross' shared checks and counters. SD Orb Heracross is a huge threat with a few select checks like Fairium-Z Sableye or Acrobatics Gligar which both don't do to well against Specs Kommo-o.

Each week we'll nominate a component and the community will submit a core that fits it. An explanation of why the core was chosen and how it works is required.

This week you guys will be building a Dark Spam Core. The dark type is a huge part of our meta as almost all stall teams carry umbreon while many offense teams carry Sharpedo, Zoroark or Honchkrow. Dark spam is focused on breaking down eachothers checks to allow one of the mons to sweep lategame. Voting will begin Monday 26th.

Hall of Fame
Glalie-Mega @ Glalitite
Ability: Refrigerate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Double-Edge
- Freeze-Dry
- Spikes
- Ice Shard

Mismagius @ Ghostium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Nasty Plot
- Dazzling Gleam
- Taunt

Nidoqueen @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Stealth Rock
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power

This is a core made for HO and Offense. Queen and M-Glalie beats all forms of removal in the tier, hence they work great as setters. Queen also beats most hazard setters available barring Zong and suicide leads. Missy spinblocks Cryo for days and prevents defog with taunt. Donphan/Dhelm has a hard time spinning vs HO due to how easily they're whittled, and will therefore typically only get the chance to spin once. To add to this Missy lives offensive Donphan’s knock, so the only remover left to worry about is Dhelm, which as insinuated before will get overwhelmed eventually. I could see mons such as Sharpedo and Autotomize Kommo-o greatly appreciating the support this core gives them, as its wallbreaking potential in tandem with the hazards wears down Kommo-o’s/Pedo’s checks, and thus makes their job of cleaning a lot easier.

Reuniclus @ Electrium Z
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Recover
- Thunder
- Psyshock
- Calm Mind

Heracross @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Facade
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

Diancie @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Moonblast
- Diamond Storm
- Heal Bell

This core work well because it can basically beat a lot of Pokémon in the tier. First Reuniclus, Calm Mind Reuniclus find a lot of space to set up in the tier, setting up in common Pokémon like Cresselia, Mantine and Milotic without Haze, Gligar, Registeel, Florges, Diancie and Bronzong, with Magic Guard to prevent Toxic and any passive damage being an awesome ability, also Gigavolt Havoc is awesome to threaten Water-types. SD Guts Heracross is an awesome Pokémon who can threaten the entire tier at +2, helping again with some Steel-types that Reuniclus would have some problem breaking (Knocking off Doublade's Eviolite), these 2 are awesome togheter. The third Pokémon is used to set Rocks and to have a way to take Special moves, also thanks to it's typing Diancie can take strong Fire- and Flying- moves. I recommend pairing this set a check to Doublade, even though Hera beats Doublade on 1v1 it will lose HP each turn, so a reliable way to stop these swords can help (like Mantine or Gligar who could Defog), also something able to check Durant like Defensive Nidoqueen (which could help with Toxic Spikes) or again Gligar or Mantine. I have been using this core and it worked really well.

Sharpedo @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Protect
- Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Ice Beam

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Ice Punch
This core is a pretty nice type spam core that allows either mon to be the eventual win condition. They have identical coverage in Water / Dark / Ice, which is unresisted in RU except for like... poliwrath or something, I dunno. Anyway, it's really solid coverage, and since both Sharpedo and Feraligatr share all three offensive types, they can spam whichever the opponent's team is weakest to.
In addition, Feraligatr is exclusively physical and Sharpedo is exclusively special, so they can win against different teams. For example, teams with a Gligar + Doublade defensive core are weak to Sharpedo, while balanced teams that rely on Nidoqueen + Mantine fold quickly to Feraligatr, especially once it has used Dragon Dance.

Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Sand Veil
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Acrobatics/ Eartquake
- Earthquake/ Knock Off

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Foul Play
- Heal Bell

Registeel @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Protect
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic
- Seismic Toss
I'm gonna go with a really common defensive core. They're all stall staples and it's basically the RegiMolaGon of this gen. Regi gets rocks and walls ~95% of the special attackers in the tier now that queen is gone. Glig is the best hazard remover in the tier and pivots in on a plethora of physical threats, as well as knocking off items, which stall loves. Umby acts as a cleric and wish support to keep Regi healthy. You can toy with the spreads as much as you'd like, speed creep is advised on all three mons, umby is phys def bc you don't need to be sdef for queen anymore, but you could definitely give it more sdef if you want etc.

Just add 3 mons that can take on Salazzle, an unaware mon (quag does both), another, preferably better fo hera check (if they knock the first time, +2 facade kills the next time it's in), a kommo check and a wincon such as sd escav, cm bro etc (bc f having pp stall as your only wincon).

Rhyperior @ Icium Z / Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 244 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Rock Blast
- Ice Punch

Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Roost
- Defog
- Toxic
This core is really flexible on its onto a lot of teams mainly because they both provide utility that you almost always want to have on your team. First and foremost they give a Stealth Rocker and a Defogger which is great. Second is that there typings pair extremely well together. Rhyperior can pivot into Volt Switchers and eat any Rock-type move while Mantine can Toxic bulky Waters or Scald Ground-types. Although this ckre has theyre fair share of weaknesses like Rotom-H and Heliolisk, it fits really well on balance teams and is a good backbone if you ask me.

Week 1 will be for you guys to build a spike stack core including; a setter, and a way of preventing removal. Hazard stack is a very big part of this meta as there are several good spike setters such as; Chesnaught, Froslass, Roserade, and Mega-Glalie. This makes it so that every team except hyper offense need to run atleast 1 form of hazard removal. I think a core of three pokemon will be better this week to be able to get good ways of keeping hazards up.
Post away!

Chesnaught+Comfey+Silvally-Ghost

This is my favourite Spike Core, Fast Taunt Chesnaught help preventing hazards from slower Pokémon and preventing Defog, Comfey helps with Taunt and is also a nice wincon, while Silvally-Ghost is the used spinblocker. Fast Taunt Chesnaught run Speed to outspeed uninvested Gligar, so the only Pokémon able to defog are Offensive Defog Flygon and invested Gligar. You can choose between Leftovers or Rocky Helmet, Leech Seed or Spiky Shield (I'd recommend run Leech Seed if you are using Rocky Helmet) and Drain Punch (helps against things like Band Escavalier and will give a few recovery) or Wood Hammer (helps against Bulky Water-types and Espeon. The second part of the core is Comfey, with Taunt still prevent Defog and can sometimes prevent hazards from Faster-Pokémon, like Nidoqueen without Sludge Wave (EVs are used to outspeed Timid Queen), with Calm Mind this Pokémon can basically sweep after the opposing Steel and Poison-types are knocked out, Spikes helps a lot in this since the only common Steel/Poison immune to Spikes is Bronzong, and Silvally can 2HKO it, while Chesnaught help beating things like Escavalier and Doublade (with Taunt+Leech Seed). The last part of the core is Silvally-Ghost, there are some reasons I chose this instead of any other Spinblocker. The first is that Silvally can pressure all the common Defoggers (can OHKO Mantine after Rocks, OHKO PhysDef Gligar, and 2HKO SpDef Gligar, also beating the uncommon Defog Flygon, though it will be able to Defog), also can help against Nidoqueen, a huge threat to the core. Other reason is that Parting Shot help Comfey a lot, it can setup more easily, also helps against most Spinners, it's the better Ghost against Donphan since Ice Beam deals a lot and the strongest Knock Off will be a roll to 2HKO Silvally, unless Dhelmise run a Spooky Plate Silvally can avoid OHKO with Rocks (25%) and always 2HKO it with one Spike (even with AV), and it can easily beat Blastoise on 1v1. These Speed EVs are to outspeed Timid Queen to always beat it on 1v1. I recommend pair this core with some Psychic check and a check to Nidoqueen, since it's still a threat. AV Escavalier usually works doing both, also Bronzong can help and set Stealth Rock.
By the way, shotouts to Galactiknight for showing me the Chesnaught+Comfey core, once in the RU Room.

Chesnaught @ Rocky Helmet / Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 84 Def / 172 Spe
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Leech Seed / Spiky Shield / Synthesis
- Drain Punch / Wood Hammer

Comfey @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Triage
EVs: 92 HP / 252 SpA / 164 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
- Synthesis
- Taunt

Silvally-Ghost @ Ghost Memory
Ability: RKS System
EVs: 52 HP / 252 SpA / 204 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Parting Shot
- Shadow Ball / Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Replay (in this replay Comfey had Leftovers and Silvally-Ghost had EVs to outspeed only ModestQueen, but I think this replay works).

Reserving Qwilfish (lol this learns Spikes too) + Dhelmise + Bruxish

Qwilfish + Dhelmise + Bruxish

Qwilfish @ Waterium Z / Black Sludge
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 216 HP / 156 Def / 136 Spe
Jolly / Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Waterfall / Scald
- Spikes
- Taunt
- Thunder Wave

Dhelmise @ Assault Vest
Ability: Steelworker
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Power Whip
- Anchor Shot
- Earthquake / Shadow Claw
- Rapid Spin

Bruxish @ Life Orb
Ability: Strong Jaw
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Psychic Fangs
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Swords Dance

This is a great offensive core that works well on bulky offense and even on certain HO builds. Qwilfish is main Spike setter (and an underrated one at that), since Intimidate + its great Water / Poison defensive typing allows it to come in on the many Fighting, Bug, Fire, and Water types running rampant throughout the tier. It also acts as a great anti-lead since it can Taunt and break down other SR setters such as Diancie, Rhypherior, and Bronzong and with Waterium Z, can break through Nidoqueen with a bit of prior damage. Dhelmise acts as the spinblocker, since it can beat spinners such as Hitmontop, Blastoise, and Donphan with relative ease and can also trap and KO them with Anchor Shot + Power Whip if it gets the chance. Assault Vest allows it to deal with special attackers that annoy Qwilfish and vice-versa. Finally, Bruxish is the main offensive wallbreaker that abuses the Spike damage to weaken down its checks, helping it secure KOes after it sets up an SD. It also helps prevents spinblockers since it can beat practically all the spinners I had mentioned previously and can also discourage Defog users such as Mantine and Gligar since it can even KO them with a bit of prior damage.

Its a really splashable core imo since all these 3 mons synergize well with eachother and works even better if paired with other wallbreakers such as Swellow and Salazzle.

Chesnaught + Jellicent

Chesnaught 3d sprite.gif
Jellicent 3d sprite.gif

Chesnaught @ Rocky Helmet / Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Spe
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Wood Hammer
- Synthesis / Leech Seed
- Taunt

Jellicent @ Ghostium Z / Colbur Berry / Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Def / 140 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
- Hex / Scald

Chesnaught as the spiker, Jellicent as the spinblocker. Both Pokemon are running enough speed to outpace creeping base 85s like Gligar and Cresselia. The premise behind this idea was simple; I didn't want to rely on a Pokemon like Milotic or Braviary to try to deter defog. Chesnaught and Jellicent can both outspeed Gligar and Mantine and taunt them before they get a chance to defog. Now that just leaves our spinners, but Jellicent spinblocks every good spinblocker we have bar Dhelmise, which Chesnaught can freely switch into and set Spikes on anyway. The two have decent defensive synergy as well so that's always a nice plus.

Now I'm personally not a big fan of Leech Seed on Chesnaught given than Roserade and Shaymin can switch into Chesnaught super easily and I like the reliable recovery, but I left it and Leftovers as options. Jellicent is running Defense to better take on Donphan, Escavalier, and Cloyster, but you can run an alternate spread of 252 HP / 40 SpD / 216 Spe with a Calm Nature to tank hits from Nidoqueen and Salazzle better. Z-Hex has the base power equivalent of Z-Shadow Ball for some reason, so it can do a few things like doing 81-96% to Salazzle and OHKOing Cloyster all time time while Hex fails to do enough to them. It also weakens the power of Knock Off so that's always nice. If the Z-move slot is used up by a teammate then you can run Colbur Berry or Leftovers. Scald is an option over Hex if you want to check Salazzle and Nidoqueen better (you would probably run it with the SpD spread). It also prevents Swellow from freely switching in and beats stuff like Snorlax and Umbreon more consistently.

I don't play much RU but this is a core I have been trying on stall lately... All three have a great defensive synergy - Jellicent takes Fighting and Fire type attacks for Ferroseed, Ferroseed takes Grass type attacks for Jellicent and Nidoqueen takes Electric type attacks for Jellicent. The core is pretty weak to Ground and set-up sweepers.

Jellicent + Nidoqueen is a core I have been using on a stall team I got to #4 with on the UU ladder so the core can't be bad, rite? Ferroseed is just an addition so get more forms of hazards.

The winner of the first round is eifo Congratulations!

This week we will be doing it about set up spam, a core of three pokémon will be better this week with atleast two pokémon having a set up move. Set up sweepers are abundant in this tier and if they are used well they can have devastating affects on the opposing team. Submission ends Tuesday 2nd at 5:00pm GMT +1.

Rockium Z SD Virizion + AV Slowking + SD Doublade

Alright I have to admit I havent tested this core (yet!!), but on paper it looked pretty neat! I based it on a SD Virizion + AV Slowking core I used in ORAS. Its a core that shows great synergy between the two as they cover eachothers weaknesses very well and lure out the Pokémon/Moves that the other benefits from. For example Virizion Lures out poison types and physical invested walls and tries to catch them by surprise with a Future sight from Slowking. Slowking can lure out Dark type attacks that would give Virizion a Justified boost. Adding SD Doublade gives this core some more physical bulk and another way to lure out threats to be hit with a future sight, for example Rotom-Heat and Salazzle. Doublade also helps with luring out a Justified boost for Virizion. You might say woudnt an opposing Doublade dismantle this core? that is why the Slowking has enough speed to outspeed 0 speed EV's Doublade and hit it first with a Fire Blast. It doesnt OHKO but thats when one tactical retreats and 1 has team-members for. The point is that Doublade, A counter(!) to Virizion, is severly weakened.
So in a few words this core relies on abusing eachothers weaknesses and luring out a certain Pokémon/Move to either be punished by a future sight or a Justified boost making it easier for either Virizion or Doublade to sweep the floor.
