SM LC Really Good Cores
At the most basic level, a good Pokemon core works together to win battles! A good core is comprised of two or three Pokemon that share offensive or defensive synergy, meaning they either break or wall certain sets of Pokemon the other cannot. Having a good core helps you teambuild around a specific goal, making the process much easier and helping create much stronger teams. This thread will showcase some of the really good cores available to teambuilders in SM LC! Feel free to submit your two- or three-mon core for consideration; additionally, if you're stuck in a teambuilding rut, stop by this thread to pick up some new ideas!

Please follow this example when you post your core:

Gastly @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 200 SpA / 80 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Substitute

Chinchou @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Volt Absorb
Level: 5
EVs: 52 Def / 228 SpA / 220 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Dazzling Gleam / Ice Beam

And insert a short description of the core here. This core works together offensively to remove Grass-type Pokemon by luring them in with Chinchou's Volt Switch and blasting them away with Gastly. In return, Chinchou can revenge KO Abra, Shell Smash users, and +1 Scraggy, all of which help Gastly out. Gastly is also immune to the Ground-type attacks that threaten Chinchou, which is a nice bonus! This solid offensive core brings potent wallbreaking and Speed control to any offensive team.

Offensive Cores

Doduo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Early Bird
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 240 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Return
- Jump Kick
- Quick Attack

Diglett @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock / Memento
- Sucker Punch
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide

Scarf Doduo can function as a good late game cleaner but doesn't like the Steel-, Rock- and Electric-types that resist its Brave Bird. Diglett traps those and provides Stealth Rock support to break Focus Sashes. If Stealth Rock is not needed, Memento can provide Doduo with a safe switch in.

Zigzagoon @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Pickup
EVs: 132 HP / 196 Atk / 108 Def / 28 SpD / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- Extreme Speed
- Thief
- Seed Bomb

Grimer-Alola @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Def / 36 SpA / 36 SpD
Adamant / Brave Nature
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Poison Jab
- Memento / Fire Blast

Alolan Grimer Pursuit traps Ghost-types so that Zigzagoon can sweep with Belly Drum. It also provides Knock Off support to weaken bulky Pokemon that would otherwise live a +6 Extreme Speed. Memento lets Zigzagoon set up more easily, however Alolan Grimer isn't an incredibly reliable Memento user because it's slow, so Fire Blast can be used instead to damage the Steel-types which trouble Zigzagoon. If Fire Blast is run, a Brave nature should be used.

Surskit @ Focus Sash / Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 36 HP / 20 Def / 196 SpA / 20 SpD / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sticky Web
- Hydro Pump / Scald
- Giga Drain
- Haze

Pumpkaboo-Super @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 204 HP / 36 Def / 4 SpA / 236 SpD / 28 Spe
Calm Nature
- Giga Drain
- Synthesis
- Will-O-Wisp
- Fire Blast

Pawniard @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 156 Atk / 36 Def / 116 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock / Swords Dance / Brick Break

This core aims to set up Sticky Web and keep it on the field. Choice Scarf can be used on Surskit instead of Focus Sash to consistently set up webs versus Onix, a common lead, and Taunt Mienfoo. Pumpkaboo-Super spinblocks fairly reliably, taking on Drilbur, Staryu, and Kabuto. However, it should be wary of Analytic Ice Beam Staryu, which 2HKOes after Stealth Rock if it hits Ice Beam on the switch, and Life Orb Staryu, which consistently 2HKOes. Pawniard discourages Defog via Defiant. It can also abuse Sticky Web using its great offensive presence, especially if it runs Swords Dance. It also takes on Fire-, Ice-, Dark- and Ghost-types for Pumpkaboo, while Pumpkaboo checks Ground-types in return.

Mienfoo @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Drain Punch

Onix @ Eviolite
Ability: Weak Armor
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Rock Blast
- Explosion

This is a rather simple offensive core where Onix covers for Mienfoo's Flying-type weakness and also sets up Stealth Rocks that make it hard for Flying-types to switch in often. Weak Armor allows Onix to outspeed both Scarf Doduo and Weak Armor Vullaby, both of which threaten Onix greatly. Explosion can heavily dent a wall that would otherwise live an attack from Mienfoo.

Croagunk @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 52 HP / 116 Def / 188 SpA / 116 SpD / 36 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Sludge Bomb
- Focus Blast
- Vacuum Wave

Pawniard @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Brick Break
- Pursuit

Pawniard can trap Abra and Gastly, both of which threaten a Nasty Plot Croagunk sweep. Pawniard also gives valuable Knock Off support which can help secure KOs. Croagunk can act as a Fighting-type check that can switch into Fighting-type attacks that threaten Pawniard. However Croagunk is not incredibly bulky, and it may be better to sacrifice Pawniard to allow Croagunk to come in safely to set up a Nasty Plot.

Abra @ Focus Sash
Level: 5
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 36 Atk / 240 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Energy Ball

Gastly @ Life Orb
Level: 5
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 200 SpA / 80 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Substitute

Diglett @ Groundium Z
Level: 5
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Sucker Punch
- Substitute

This is a rather simple core where Diglett traps Pokemon that irritate both Abra and Gastly greatly such as Alolan Grimer, Ferrothorn, and 19 Speed Pokemon that tie with Abra and outspeed Gastly such as Staryu. Diglett's can also use Z Earthquake to punch holes in walls such as Spritzee and Munchlax, and weaken if not KO them.

Snivy @ Eviolite
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 236 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Defog
- Leaf Storm
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Wynaut @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 132 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Encore
- Tickle

Wynaut helps Snivy by helping trap specific threats that stop a Snivy sweep such as Croagunk and Foongus. It can also provide Encore and Tickle support, helping Snivy fire off attacks safely and weakening walls so they can be brought down with Leaf Storm.

Shellder @ Eviolite
Ability: Skill Link
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Liquidation
- Shell Smash

Diglett @ Groundium Z
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Sucker Punch
- Memento

This is a classic offensive core where Diglett helps remove Steel- and Electric-types that threaten Shellder such as Ferroseed, Magnemite, and Chinchou. Diglett can also provide Memento support that allows Shellder to set up a Shell Smash safely. Overall, a solid offensive core that is very consistent.

Doduo @ Life Orb
Ability: Early Bird
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 21 HP
- Brave Bird
- Jump Kick
- Knock Off
- Quick Attack

Vullaby @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Overcoat
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Rock Smash

This is a very common Birdspam core where Doduo and Vullaby help each other wear down Flying-type checks and counters so the other can KO it with strong STAB attacks. This core appreciates some form of hazard control as both are susceptible to Stealth Rocks.

Wingull @ Life Orb/Flynium Z
Level: 5
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 36 Def / 236 SpA / 236 Spe
IVs: 0 HP
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Scald
- Knock Off
- U-turn

Staryu @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 156 Def / 116 SpA / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Recover

Wingull appreciates Staryu's ability to remove Stealth Rocks as it takes super effective damage from them. Staryu can also help wear down Wingull's checks and counters as they switch in with a strong Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt thanks to Analytic, which gives Staryu's attacks a boost when it moves last during a turn. Staryu also appreciates Wingull's ability to threaten Grass-types with Hurricane which allows it to fire off STAB Hydro Pumps better.

Corphish @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
- Dragon Dance

Diglett @ Life Orb
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 240 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Memento

Diglett helps trap Pokemon that threaten Corphish such as Ferroseed and Cottonee, and can also provide Memento support to allow Corphish to set up safely.

Defensive Cores

Mareanie @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 180 Def / 180 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Sludge Bomb
- Haze
- Recover

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 5
EVs: 84 HP / 36 Atk / 188 Def / 148 SpD / 36 Spe
Careful Nature
- Bullet Seed
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave

These two Pokemon cover each others' weaknesses near completely. Mareanie takes care of the Fighting- and Fire-type Pokemon that threaten Ferroseed, and Ferroseed puts a stop to various Ground-, Electric-, and Psychic-type Pokemon that would beat Mareanie. Though it is rather passive, this core is especially difficult to get rid of due to Mareanie's Regenerator and Ferroseed's incredible bulk.

Timburr (M) @ Eviolite
Ability: Guts
Level: 5
EVs: 76 HP / 36 Atk / 156 Def / 236 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Mach Punch

Grimer-Alola @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Def / 36 SpA / 36 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Poison Jab
- Shadow Sneak

So here's a pretty simple balanced core based around Alolan Grimer and Bulk Up Timburr. Basically, Alolan Grimer is able to weaken a lot of Timburr's checks with Knock Off. Alolan Grimer is also able to reliably Pursuit trap Psychic-types like Abra that can put a stop to Timburr's sweeping capabilities. Additionally, Grimer-A does a great job of spreading poison thanks to Poison Touch, chipping down physical walls and overall making Timburr's job of sweeping late-game much easier. Timburr itself packs a powerful Mach Punch, which helps tidy up against Pawniard and Shell Smash users that can come in on Grimer-A.

Pawniard @ Eviolite
Ability: Defiant
Level: 5
EVs: 156 Atk / 36 Def / 116 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock

Staryu @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Psychic
- Recover
- Rapid Spin

Here's a really standard balance-oriented hazard control core that's only been getting better. Pawniard has been having a tough time in this meta with the Sucker Punch nerf and the advent of Mudbray, but it still provides Stealth Rock and still packs a punch with Knock Off. Due to various little quirks of Gen 7, Staryu has emerged as the premier hazard remover; it's pretty much the only one worth using. Staryu provides Rapid Spin to complete the hazard control core, appreciates Pawniard's ability to pressure Grass-types, and helps alleviate Pawniard's Mudbray and Croagunk issues. This is a very solid core that you can add to most any balance or bulky offense team with ease!

Foongus @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 124 HP / 156 Def / 160 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Ground

Slowpoke @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 116 HP / 156 Def / 116 SpA / 116 SpD
Bold Nature
- Slack Off
- Scald
- Psychic
- Thunder Wave

Mienfoo @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 76 Atk / 196 Def / 196 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- High Jump Kick / Acrobatic
s

This Regenerator core can be difficult to wear down. Foongus checks the Fighting-, Grass- and Electric-types which threaten Slowpoke and the Fairy-types which threaten Mienfoo, while Slowpoke checks the Fire- and Ice-types which threaten Foongus. Mienfoo deals with Dark-types for Slowpoke and Steel-types for Foongus. These effects are magnified tenfold by the fact that each Pokemon has access to Regenerator, allowing them to gain 33% of their HP back every time they switch out. Sometimes, it feels like this core lasts forever!

Onix @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
- Taunt / Explosion

Foongus @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 124 HP / 160 Def / 160 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire

courtesy of blizzardy:

I've found this pair to make a great defensive core. Onix is arguably the best stop to the flock of birds that terrorize Foongus, while Foongus covers for Onix's weakness to Water, Grass, Fighting and Ground. Onix can also set up Stealth Rocks while Foongus can cripple the enemy with Spore. Weak Armor Onix is, in my opinion, its best set, letting it punish birds and physical Fire types like Ponyta and Larvesta so much harder. I usually run Hidden Power Fire on this set because without it, Ferroseed can wall the core easily. Staryu with Ice Beam can give this core problems, too. Therefore, a Staryu of your own, or even a Chinchou, Slowpoke or Mareanie, compliments this core very well.

Spritzee @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Aroma Veil
EVs: 212 HP / 196 Def / 12 SpA / 76 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 84 HP / 36 Atk / 108 Def / 228 SpD / 36 Spe
Impish Nature
- Bullet Seed
- Knock Off
- Thunder Wave
- Stealth Rock

These two help cover each other's weaknesses very well, as Spritzee helps check Fighting-types that switch into Ferroseed, and Ferroseed is immune to Poison-type attacks and resists Steel-type attacks that Spritzee is weak to. Spritzee can also help heal Ferroseed with Wish, which is helpful because Ferroseed does not have any reliable forms of recovery.

Alright! I got a base of cores from the old thread set up so this can start out as a resource, but we're always taking cores!

Don't be a bore, pour in more of your cores!

Onix and Foongus, Best Friends Forever

Onix @ Eviolite / Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
- Taunt / Explosion

Foongus @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 124 HP / 160 Def / 160 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire / Clear Smog

I've found this pair to make a great defensive core. Onix is arguably the best stop to the flock of birds that terrorize Foongus, while Foongus covers for Onix's weakness to Water, Grass, Fighting and Ground. Onix can also set up Stealth Rocks while Foongus can cripple the enemy with Spore. Weak Armor Onix is, in my opinion, its best set, letting it punish birds and physical Fire types like Ponyta and Larvesta so much harder.

also side note, look how silly Onix's gen 3 animation is lol

I appreciate and respect the consonance used so I will put some cores in given the thread needs some support.
Defensive

Spritzee+Ferroseed
Spritzee @ Eviolite
Ability: Aroma Veil
Level: 5
EVs: 212 HP / 196 Def / 12 SpA / 76 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Aromatherapy/Calm Mind/Covet
- Moonblast

Ferroseed @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 5
EVs: 164 HP / 188 Def / 148 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock/Spike
- Bullet Seed
- Knock Off
- Thunder Wave

Very common defensive core. Ferroseed knocks off items, paralyzes pokemon and sets up hazards for its team. Spritzee covers Ferroseed's fighting weakness and allows it to heal up by wish passing which allows Ferroseed to run eviolite without getting chipped as easily.
Offensive

Abra+Gastly
Abra @ Life Orb
Ability: Magic Guard
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Fighting]/Hidden Power [Fire]
- Energy Ball/Dazzling Gleam
- Substitute

Gastly @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 200 SpA / 80 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Sludge Bomb
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fighting]/Destiny Bond

Well known core. Wear each others' checks down/breaks. Other one cleans. Life Orb Abra is ridiculous right now just in general but combining it with a gastly (in theory trading or severely weakening alolan grimer for example) makes it even more of a threat than it already is.

Was talking in showdown LC room earlier today and directed someone to this thread and realized we could add some cores that were already suggested that are very relevant in today's metagame. Courtesy of the users that put these in the original thread. I will simply quote them and tag them for their work in case they are added.

Doduo + Vullaby

Nasty Plot Vullaby lures in Onix and Kabuto which are then KOed with Hidden Power Grass, and threats like Ferroseed and Pawniard can be KOed with Heat Wave. This opens the way for either Vullaby itself or Choice Scarf Doduo to clean.
Doduo @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Early Bird
EVs: 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Return
- Knock Off
- Jump Kick

Vullaby @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 116 HP / 240 SpA / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Air Slash
- Heat Wave
- Hidden Power Grass

Timburr + Mienfoo

Together these Pokemon form a great Fighting spam core. They wear down each others checks and counters so that Choice Scarf Mienfoo can sweep with High Jump Kick. Timburr has Ice Punch so that it can remove threats like Foongus and Vullaby that could otherwise stop Mienfoo in its tracks, while Mienfoo has Poison Jab to weaken the Fairy-types that usually wall it. Reckless is great for breaking through Pokemon like Mareanie, however Regenerator can be used to let Mienfoo easily recover from damage it takes from priority and High Jump Kick misses.
Timburr @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 196 Atk / 156 Def / 156 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch

Mienfoo @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Reckless / Regenerator
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Knock Off
- Poison Jab
- U-turn

Gastly + Snivy

Basically, in the current metagame people often use the same Pokemon as their check to Gastly and Snivy in the interest of role compression. The most common example of this is Alolan Grimer, which is the best and most common Gastly check, but Pokemon like Vullaby and Foongus (which kinda hates gastly but w/e) tend to be used to take on both of these Pokemon as well. If one of these Pokemon is used to lure the check for the other, the path becomes clear for that other to sweep, and both have the offensive presence to quickly become very dangerous. Below, I've presented two different variants of this core that can work to lure in and take out shared checks, but I imagine more can be used. Obviously, this core is quite weak to powerful faster Pokemon, like Abra, Doduo (if it wins Speed ties), and most Scarf mons, but it packs enough offensive presence into two team slots that I find its not difficult to fit checks to these Pokemon in the remaining team slots.

Z move Lure Snivy + LO Gast
Gastly @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 40 Def / 200 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Substitute / Dazzling Gleam

Snivy @ Normalium Z
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 SpD
- Leaf Storm
- Wring Out
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Destiny Bond Gastly + Evio Sniv
Gastly @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 40 Def / 200 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 Def / 30 SpA / 30 SpD / 30 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fighting]
- Destiny Bond

Snivy @ Eviolite
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 1 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 SpD
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Synthesis
- Glare

These are all OFFENSIVE cores if not obvious. I'll also post one of my own while I'm here.
Snivy+Grimer-Alola

A balance core we have seen gain usage in Snake Draft that is an excellent anti webs and overall solid core. Grimer-Alola pursuit traps pokemon like gastly that are annoying to snivy while being a solid answer to bulky grasses that give Snivy a hard time such as Ferroseed, Pumpkaboo and Foongus. Some of Grimer's answers are also Snivy checks as well such as Pawniard and Croagunk and having these pokemon knocked off for Snivy mid or lategame is incredible allowing leaf storm to punch through easier. This team as previously mentioned is also excellent vs webs which as we all know Abra webs is one of if not the most terrifying thing to face right now. Snivy gains contrary boost while Grimer is the Abra revenger so long as there is no sub up.
Grimer-Alola @ Eviolite Ability: Poison Touch
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 196 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Shadow Sneak
- Gunk Shot
Snivy @ Eviolite
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 236 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Leaf Storm
- Glare
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Synthesis

What a beautiful face, I have found in this place
Hey all, this thread is old and out of date, so I'm gonna be updating it by taking out some cores that aren't all that good and adding some cores. Please feel free to add more or tell me which other ones I should take out. Thanks to OP and Fiend for helping give me cores.

Taking Out
Mienfoo + Carvanha: This core really isn't good as passing Swords Dance boosts to Carvahna isn't as good as it was back in ORAS, and honestly it wasn't good back then either. Highly inconsistent and thus is being removed.
Alolan Vulpix + Alolan Sandshrew: Its bad.

Adding

Mienfoo @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- U-turn
- Knock Off
- Drain Punch

Onix @ Eviolite
Ability: Weak Armor
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Rock Blast
- Explosion

This is a rather simple offensive core where Onix covers for Mienfoo's Flying-type weakness and also sets up Stealth Rocks that make it hard for Flying-types to switch in often. Weak Armor allows Onix to outspeed both Scarf Doduo and Weak Armor Vullaby, both of which threaten Onix greatly. Explosion can heavily dent a wall that would otherwise live an attack from Mienfoo.

Croagunk @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 52 HP / 116 Def / 188 SpA / 116 SpD / 36 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Sludge Bomb
- Focus Blast
- Vacuum Wave

Pawniard @ Choice Scarf
Level: 5
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Iron Head
- Brick Break
- Pursuit

Pawniard can trap Abra and Gastly, both of which threaten a Nasty Plot Croagunk sweep. Pawniard also gives valuable Knock Off support which can help secure KOs. Croagunk can act as a Fighting-type check that can switch into Fighting-type attacks that threaten Pawniard. However Croagunk is not incredibly bulky, and it may be better to sacrifice Pawniard to allow Croagunk to come in safely to set up a Nasty Plot.

Abra @ Focus Sash
Level: 5
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 36 Atk / 240 SpA / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Dazzling Gleam
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Energy Ball

Gastly @ Life Orb
Level: 5
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 200 SpA / 80 SpD / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power Fighting
- Substitute

Diglett @ Groundium
Level: 5
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Sucker Punch
- Substitute

This is a rather simple core where Diglett traps Pokemon that irritate both Abra and Gastly greatly such as Alolan Grimer, Ferrothorn, and 19 Speed Pokemon that tie with Abra and outspeed Gastly such as Staryu. Diglett's can also use Z Earthquake to punch holes in walls such as Spritzee and Munchlax, and weaken if not KO them.

Snivy @ Eviolite
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 236 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Def
- Defog
- Leaf Storm
- Synthesis
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Wynaut @ Berry Juice
Level: 5
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 156 HP / 132 Def / 132 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Counter
- Mirror Coat
- Encore
- Tickle

Wynaut helps Snivy by helping trap specific threats that stop a Snivy sweep such as Croagunk and Foongus. It can also provide Encore and Tickle support, helping Snivy fire off attacks safely and weakening walls so they can be brought down with Leaf Storm.

Shellder @ Eviolite
Ability: Skill Link
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Razor Shell
- Shell Smash

Diglett @ Groundium Z
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 SpD / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Sucker Punch
- Memento

This is a classic offensive core where Diglett helps remove Steel- and Electric-types that threaten Shellder such as Ferroseed, Magnemite, and Chinchou. Diglett can also provide Memento support that allows Shellder to set up a Shell Smash safely. Overall, a solid offensive core that is very consistent.

Doduo @ Life Orb
Ability: Early Bird
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 21 HP
- Brave Bird
- Jump Kick
- Knock Off
- Quick Attack

Vullaby @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Overcoat
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Rock Smash

This is a very common Birdspam core where Doduo and Vullaby help each other wear down Flying-type checks and counters so the other can KO it with strong STAB attacks. This core appreciates some form of hazard control as both are susceptible to Stealth Rocks.

Wingull @ Life Orb
Level: 5
Ability: Rain Dish
EVs: 36 Def / 236 SpA / 236 Spe
IVs: 0 HP
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Scald

Staryu @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Analytic
EVs: 156 Def / 116 SpA / 236 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Recover

Wingull appreciates Staryu's ability to remove Stealth Rocks as it takes super effective damage from them. Staryu can also help wear down Wingull's checks and counters as they switch in with a strong Hydro Pump and Thunderbolt thanks to Analytic, which gives Staryu's attacks a boost when it moves last during a turn. Staryu also appreciates Wingull's ability to threaten Grass-types with Hurricane which allows it to fire off STAB Hydro Pumps better.

Corphish @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
- Dragon Dance

Diglett @ Life Orb
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 240 SpA / 240 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Memento

Diglett helps trap Pokemon that threaten Corphish such as Ferrothorn and Cottonee, and can also provide Memento support to allow Corphish to set up safely.

The Doduo+Diglett core at the top of offensive cores is using a kinda bad Scarf Doduo set and sash Dig is mediocre in the metagame right now - I'd probably suggest changing Return to Knock Off and the sash to a Groundium set, probably without stealth rock. Also Doduo has 240 Speed EVs for no reason?

Reviving a dead topic is something I've always loved to do lol
Anyway, today I bring a core that got added in the previous thread (yey!), an offensive core based on LO Salandit and Eviolite Vullaby.
However, this was valid for SM: time to go ultra and revamp it for USUM!

Salandit @ Firium Z
Level: 5
Ability: Corrosion
EVs: 36 Def / 192 SpA / 40 SpD / 220 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Will-O-Wisp

Vullaby @ Eviolite
Level: 5
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 116 HP / 240 SpA / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Air Slash
- Dark Pulse
- Roost
First of all, before moving to the real description, let's be honest: we have a Pokémon that, at the time of writing, is ranked as B-, and one of the most common Pokémon found in LC. So why do they hang out together? For a simple reason: their checks. They exploit each other's checks to come in and do whatever they want and like to do. Let's see why:
Even the Team Skull n00bs got it lol
Since its introduction in SM, Salandit caught my attention: sure, one can say it is a poor man's Gastly if you look at it as a special Poison-type attacker, but this thing can "stand" against Steel-types, namely Pawniard, most Fighting-types (even though it has no bulk at all), and can mow down or scare away Foongus, a thing Gastly has issues with. However, this little lizard is going to have a hell of a time against Ground-types like the ever-present Diglett, Mudbray, and Onix; also, there's always Abra to be ware of, as it outspeeds and kills Salandit without mercy. So we are looking for a partner who can come in on Psychic-, and Ground-type attacks: since Murkrow is out, Vullaby can be our best bet.
Eviolite Weak Armor NP Vullaby can come in on a Psychic, an EQ, on any move that will 100% kill Salandit (so actually, quite a lot of moves), and start boosting via Nasty Plot. If the opponent decides to use physical moves, then Weak Armor is triggered, turning a +2 SpA Vullaby into a +2 SpA +2 Spe Vullaby. A true nightmare, trust me.
However, non HP Fighting/Heat Wave Vullaby gets heavily stopped by the likes of Pawniard, Ferroseed, and there's always the problem with Spritzee and Snubbull, that are resistant to Dark Pulse and can somehow eat a boosted Air Slash.
And waoh, look at that, all Vullaby issues die from Salandit's STABs! Salandit can come in on moderately powerful Steel-, Ice-, and Fairy-type moves, and then proceed to claim its Steel/Fairy/Ice victims.
  • Salandit uses a Firium Z set to incinerate Pawniard and Grass-types like Foongus and Snivy, and heavily dent the likes of Timburr, Mienfoo, Vullaby, and anything neutral to Fire. The absence of Rain in this tier is cool, as nothing can reduce the power of its Inferno Overdrive.
  • Fire Blast unlocks Inferno Overdrive, and is Salandit's only Fire STAB packing good power without drawbacks. Sludge Bomb melts Fairy-types like Spritzee and Snubbull, and is preferred over Sludge Wave for the 30% chance of poisoning the opponent (the only issue being Chespin, but good luck if you send a Chespin on a STAB Fire Blast user). HP Grass can somehow remedy its weakness to Ground-types, heavily damaging Onix and doing some damage to Mudbray. Will-O-Wisp can catch Pawniard off guard on a Sucker Punch, letting Salandit live Pawniard's next attack, should it be Sucker Punch or Knock Off. Please note that Knock Off deals less damage as Salandit is holding a Z-Crystal.
  • Vullaby can come in on anything trying to kill Salandit, ranging fron Abra to Ground-types bar Diglett (as it traps and kills Salandit). Then it can boost via Nasty Plot and then begin to doing damages with its STAB moves. Roost when necessary.
  • One can opt for some other options: HP Fighting/Grass or Heat Wave on Vullaby, Taunt/Fake Out/Nasty Plot on Salandit. Even items can be replaced: Life Orb/Poisonium Z for Salandit, Berry Juice/Flyinium Z for Vullaby (should one opt for LO Salandit). If using LO Salandit, a spread of 3 HP / 0 Atk / 30 SpA must be used to grant a LO HP number, and HP Grass.
There are some partners that work well with this core: Snivy can come in on Water-types like Shellder and Staryu, or Ground-types like Onix and Diglett, and proceed to set up with Leaf Storm: it can also use Defog to remove hazards now, a thing both Vullaby and Salandit appreciate. Vullaby in turn can come in on Foongus and Gastly, while Salandit can come in on Pawniard's Sucker Punch and burn it.
Stealth Rock support from Onix or Mudbray is cool, as Salandit can achieve more KOs with rocks up. Mudbray can also threaten Rock-types that harm both Salandit ans Vullaby, like Archen, Omanyte, or Onix.
Because it is rising, an answer to Wingull is appreciated, as it can kill Salandit and dent Vullaby with LO Hurricane: however, Wingull is so frail, an unboosted Vullaby can quickly kill it.
Since competitive players like numbers:
192 SpA Salandit Sludge Bomb vs. 36 HP / 196 SpD Snubbull: 24-30 (104.3 - 130.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

192 SpA Salandit Sludge Bomb vs. 212 HP / 76 SpD Eviolite Spritzee: 14-20 (51.8 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Spritzee @ Eviolite
Ability: Aroma Veil
Level: 5
EVs: 52 HP / 116 Def / 252 SpA / 76 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Moonblast
- Nasty Plot
- Psychic

Drowzee @ Berry Juice
Ability: Insomnia
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 212 Atk / 196 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Belly Drum
- Drain Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Trick Room

This duo is crazy good if used properly both are bulky enough to set up on non-SE hits drowzee takes care of ferroseed and magnemite which spritzee can't really break while spritz takes care of the mons drowzee struggles with. they both set up on different threats so a bad matchup for one usually means sacking it or using it to weaken threats for the other to sweep. Room is kinda countered by fake out/protect/endure spam but nonetheless these mons r fun to build around if ur looking for something new

Snivy @ Normalium Z
Ability: Contrary
Level: 5
EVs: 236 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Wring Out
- Glare / Knock Off
- Synthesis

Corphish @ Eviolite
Ability: Adaptability
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off / Superpower
- Swords Dance

A rather underestimated core, but pretty simple to understand: Snivy can lure Foongus and Croagunk, then surprise them with a +2 Z-Wring Out, allowing Corphish to sweep much more easily. Corphish can help Snivy sweep with Knock Off or put Ferroseed in Snivy's kill range with Superpower. In addition, Snivy can also use Glare or Knock Off to cripple many Corphish checks on the switch-in, which also makes it much better. These two mons work very well together in general.

Revamping this with new/updated cores:

Offensive Cores:

Pretty self-explanatory offensive, splashable core. Ponyta's good matchups are stuff like Mareanie, Onix, and Frillish. 12 Speed T-Punch Timburr can handle the first two and while it can't switch on a WoW, it can scare out Frill.

Ponyta @ Firium Z
Ability: Flame Body
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Flame Charge
- High Horsepower
- Morning Sun

Timburr @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Fist
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 156 Def / 156 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Thunder Punch

Another simple, yet effective duo. Eviolite Diglett can switch in safely versus the most common Gastly answers, such as Evio Pawn and Abra, and weaken them significantly or straight up remove them from the game.

Gastly @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
Level: 5
EVs: 76 Atk / 200 SpA / 200 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Psychic/Sucker Punch/Energy Ball/Substitute
- Hidden Power [Fighting]/Hidden Power [Fire]/Thunderbolt/Substitute
- Sucker Punch/Energy Ball/Thunderbolt/Hidden Power [Fire]

Diglett @ Eviolite
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 5
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide/Final Gambit/Sucker Punch
- Beat Up
- Pursuit

Corphish struggles at breaking either bulkier or faster Grass and Waters, but it can in return threaten Onix and/or weaken other defensive behemoths for Scarf Vullaby to clear.

Corphish @ Eviolite
Ability: Adaptability
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 236 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crabhammer
- Aqua Jet
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance

Vullaby (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Weak Armor
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 Def / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Heat Wave/Hidden Power [Grass]

Balanced Cores:

The king of splashable, effective defensive backbones, abusing the lack of good Ice type offensive presence. Foongus covers Onix's weaknesses and viceversa, and Vullaby is there for putting Abra in check.

Vullaby (F) @ Berry Juice
Ability: Weak Armor
Level: 5
EVs: 116 HP / 76 Def / 156 SpD / 116 Spe
Careful Nature
- Brave Bird
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Defog/Hidden Power [Grass]

Onix @ Eviolite /Groundium Z
Ability: Weak Armor
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge/Rock Blast
- Explosion/Protect

Foongus @ Eviolite
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 5
EVs: 124 HP / 156 Def / 156 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis

Other good balanced cores which offer hazard control and defensive support would be Bulky Ponyta + Staryu and Mudbray + Snivy.

I'd also like to say that FerroSpritz is the best it's ever been, by having the best way to deal with Timburr, Water and Grass types.

A core I've been using that's been really nice this meta is Dewpider + Ferro. Damn near perfect synergy thanks to Water Bubble, sets Rocks and Webs and sets up real nicely. Pawniard would probably round it out real nicely to take advantage of Defoggers and just general vullaby management. Magnemite as well.

1567422803495.png
Ferroseed @ Berry Juice
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Atk / 28 Def / 228 SpD / 36 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Seed
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
- Explosion

193133

Dewpider @ Eviolite
Ability: Water Bubble
Level: 5
EVs: 52 HP / 36 Atk / 180 Def / 180 SpD / 60 Spe
Impish Nature
- Sticky Web
- Leech Life
- Scald
- Magic Coat
