Hello,

With the release of Pokebank (with its lackluster hack checking service) and Powersaves, Kalos/Hoenn/Alola/Galar are no longer hack free regions. What's worse is that many users here are unaware of the constraints of Pokemon legality meaning hacked Pokemon can spread very quickly.

This thread will serve two purposes. The first is to provide some pointers on hacked Pokemon so you can spot a hacked Pokemon before you offer it / land yourself in hot water for spreading hacked Pokemon. The second is to provide a blacklist of common Pokemon that have been spread rather far from unaware traders. Please remove any Pokemon featured here from your thread immediately. If we catch you offering Pokemon on this list after a prolonged amount of time after they've been added to the list, your thread may suffer some sort of penalty.

Smogon adheres to the following definition:
  • Hacked: The Pokemon was created/edited via the use of any external device to modify the game and the game data in any sort of way. This includes any Pokemon bred from them. For more information on the topic, see the Wi-Fi rules.
Hacks are not allowed on Smogon. Don't trade them; don't request them.

General Rules of Thumb for Distinguishing Hacked Pokemon:
  • Perfect and/or shiny Pokemon obtained in a trade with an unknown trainer (i.e. from the GTS/Wonder Trade/Passerby) stand a reasonable chance of being hacked, so it's safest to assume they are. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Pokemon received from content creators (Twitch streams, YouTubers, etc) are most likely hacked; anything with a .com/.tv/.whatever OT even more so. If you have a Pokemon from one of these sources, or believe your Pokemon came from one of these sources, it's hacked.
    • Known exception: spo.ink/birb is anubis's
  • Possible =/= Legitimate.
    • If the odds of getting the Pokemon are worse than the chance of being eaten by a shark while in a plane, it's probably hacked. Save yourself the headache later, assume it's hacked, and don't trade it.
      • RNG abuse is the exception to this, so some common sense goes a long way. See first tip.

Gen 9 (SV):
  • Courtesy of Anubis: All static encounters, NPC trades, and NPC gifts are shiny locked. Some fixed symbol encounters (mons that always appear in the same spot) are shiny locked
    • Static encounters include: 4 (shrine) sublegends; Koraidon/Miraidon, Titans, Gimmighoul, and story encounters (1st Lechonk, decoy Tatsugiri)
    • NPC gifts include: starters, G-Meowth
    • Fixed symbols: Anubis has dumped a list of these encounters for each patch and game version (_sl_ for Scarlet, _vl_ for Violet). Each entry states whether it is locked (shiny: never) or not (shiny: random)
  • Ability Patch now works in reverse (HA -> regular ability), so things that were locked to HA are no longer stuck with them
  • The Destiny Mark is now available on mons captured on your in-game registered birthday.
  • Egg Moves can be transferred across egg groups now, making breeding easier and legality even more lenient.
  • Pokemon cannot legally hold Herba Mystica
  • Fly Pikachu was available as an early release bonus, and Surf Pikachu (Mightiest Mark, 6 IVs) was catchable via a raid event.
  • Story Koraidon/Miraidon are fixed 25/31/25/31/25/31 and Adamant/Modest respectively
  • Story Ogerpon is fixed 31/31/20/20/20/31, Lonely, and always Female
  • Story Bloodmoon Ursaluna has 3 guaranteed perfect IVs and a Hardy nature.
  • Story Terapagos is fixed 31/15/31/31/31/31, Hardy, and always Male
  • Raging Bolt/Gouging Fire/Iron Crown/Iron Boulder are fixed 20/20/20/20/20/20 with nature being random
  • All DLC legends are shiny locked.
Gen 8 (SS):
  • The breeding mechanics remained largely the same from Gen 7, meaning the number of illegal ball combinations is still limited. See here
    • Kanto Meowth and Persian can get HA by breeding female HA Galar Meowth with male Kanto Meowth holding Everstone. (When breeding different regional forms, the mons holding Everstone will pass down their form, female forme only if both are holding Everstone. Otherwise only regional forms are hatched.)
    • Mime Jr. and Kanto Mr. Mime can get HA by breeding female HA Galar Mr. Mime holding Odd Incense with male Kanto Mr. Mime holding Everstone.
    • Of course, with the release of HOME, Hidden Ability regional formes are available through transfer as well.
  • With the release of HOME, the Pokemon listed here have become available in Sword and Shield. As of now, Pokemon not listed here, here, here, or here are currently unobtainable. In short, the Pokemon listed in this tweetare unobtainable in SWSH.
    • While you can get the other regional variants in SwSh by Everstone breeding
      • Kanto Weezing is available via Dynamax Adventures in the DLC
      • Alolan Raichu was added as a gift Pokemon in the Isle of Armor DLC
    • If you have a newly purchased Poké Ball Plus, it will contain a Mew with at least 3 31 IVs. Once you have synced the device to Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, you can receive the Mythical Pokémon in your linked game.
  • You cannot pass Gigantamax status through breeding.
  • Gift Pokemon: Starters, Toxel, Type: Null, 4*Fossils and the Gigantamax Charmander/Pikachu/Eevee
    • Of all the gifts available, only the fossils can be shiny.
    • Galar starters have random IVs.
    • Gigantamax Pikachu/Eevee have ALL flawless IVs.
    • Everything else have 3 flawless IVs.
  • New gift Pokémon as of Isle of Armor: Porygon, Kubfu, Gmax Bulbasaur/Squirtle, Alolan Meowth, Alolan Vulpix, Alolan Sandshrew, Alolan Raichu, Alolan Marowak, Alolan Exeggutor, Alolan Diglett, Kanto Slowpoke, Alolan Starters
    • All are shiny locked
  • Crown Tundra static legends: Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, Galarian Moltres, Keldeo, Cosmog, Poipole, Glastrier, Spectrier, Calyrex, all of the 6 Regis, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion
    • Only the 6 Regis, Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion are able to be shiny.
    • The others are shiny locked.
    • All of the above are guaranteed 3 perfect IVs.
  • Legendaries (Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus) are guaranteed 3 31 IVs, but are shiny locked.
  • Pokemon acquired from raids are guaranteed to have [Number of Stars -1] perfect IVs. For example, a 5* Ditto will have at least 4 31 IVs.
    • The formula is different for event raid mons: The number of guaranteed IVs is equal to the number of stars. For example, 5* event mons have guaranteed 5 perfect IVs
  • Natural 3* raids can have HA if the Pokemon is available in the den at a higher star level (4-5*)
    • Event raids can have HA at any star level
  • Gmax Melmetal is currently available thru a HOME event
    • Stats: Brave - 31/31/31/31/31/0 - HOME/808809 - Cherish.
  • Galar Slowpoke is available as an in-game event in honor of the expansion announcement
    • Slowpoke does not have any guaranteed IVs
    • Slowpoke is shiny locked (though it can still breed for one)
  • The following shiny Pokemon will almost always (4095/4096 chance) be square shinies:
    • Shiny Pokemon imported from the VC
    • Shiny LGPE mons that can appear shiny in the overworld (i.e. wild Pokemon). Mewtwo is not included since it's overworld sprite cannot be shiny.
    • Gen 6-7 always-shiny encounters (i.e. shiny wondercards)
    • Pokemon that underwent a "fateful encounter"
  • Magearna acquired from HOME comes with 31/30/30/31/31/0 IVs and a Mild nature.
  • Shiny Wiskmkr Jirachi can only be a star shiny
  • HA Gen 8 starters are now available through a HOME event.
    • The Pokemon can be shiny, and come at level 5
    • The IVs and natures are fixed:
      • Grookey: Adamant + 31 HP/Atk
      • Sobble: Modest + 31 SpA/Spe
      • Scorbunny: Jolly + 31 Atk/Spe
  • Shiny Zeraora is available through a HOME event. It has fixed IVs (5 IV, missing defense) and a fixed nature (Hasty).
  • Zarude is now available through a code event. It has 3 guaranteed IVs and a Sassy nature.
  • Shiny Celebi is available through a code event. It has 3 guaranteed IVs and a Quirky nature.
  • Through a series of Mystery Gift codes, the hat Pikachus were given out in Gen 8. They are locked to a neutral nature and have random IVs.
  • The fossil Pokemon now appear either in dens or the wild in Crown Tundra, allowing for any ball to be possible on them.
    • The Galar fossils in non-standard Poke Balls must have their Hidden Ability.
  • As of Crown Tundra, Authentic Sinistea can have its Hidden Ability.
  • Shiny Pokemon obtained from Dynamax Adventures can only be star shinies.
  • A Pikachu with Sing and Celebrate as moves was given away during the 25th anniversary.
  • Shiny Zamazenta and Zacian are available through event only. They are Adamant nature and have 31/31/31/30/31/31 IVs.
  • Shiny Eternatus is available via event only. It is Timid with 31/31/31/31/31/31 IVs.

The following Pokemon are known to be hacked and commonly distributed:
  • Square Shiny Gigantamax Gengar
    • IVs: 31/31/31/15/31/27
    • Cursed Body (Hidden Ability)
    • Female
    • Lonely Nature
    • Acquired from: hacked streamer raid

Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl (BDSP):

The following is based off of datamines and is subject to change.
  • The following Pokemon cannot be shiny:
    • Mew
    • Jirachi
    • In-game trades
    • Manaphy Egg
  • Mew and Jirachi are guaranteed 3 perfect IVs
  • The starters and gift Eevee can be shiny

Let's Go Pikachu / Let's Go Eevee:
  • The starter Eevee and Pikachu have guaranteed perfect (all 31) IVs.
  • Pokemon transferred from GO should have the same Attack/Special Attack and Defense/Special Defense IVs.
    • Even HP, Attack, Special Attack, Defense, and Special Defense IVs are impossible.
  • Pokemon captured from GO Park can be caught in any Poke Ball available in LGPE (Poke Ball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Premier Ball, Master Ball).
  • The following Pokemon cannot be shiny:
    • Starter Pikachu / Starter Eevee
    • Mew
  • Mew cannot be transferred from GO.
  • Mew's Nature cannot be controlled with the lady in Celadon City (it's random). It is guaranteed 3 perfect IVs.
  • Shiny Meltan could be found in Mystery Boxes in GO via a limited-time event (February 5, 2019-March 4, 2019)
Gen 7 (SM/USM):
  • Sun and Moon have eliminated many of the illegal ball combinations from previous generations. For a list of the possible ball combinations, see TheMantyke's table.
  • As of Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, the following are now available in Heavy Balls
    • Aron, Lairon, Aggron
    • Tapu Fini, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu
    • Beldum
  • As of Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, White/Orange Flabebe can now have their HA's through SOS calls.
  • Nidoran M and F as well as Volbeat and Illumise can't pass Pokeballs as freely since they're different Pokedex #s. This means that stuff like Moon Ball Sheer Force Nidoking and Sports Ball Prankster Volbeat are illegal.
  • Shellos can inherit Pokeballs from different color Shellos.
  • Beast Ball Gen 7 Starters are illegal.
  • The following Pokemon cannot be shiny:
    • Cosmog/Cosmoem
    • Marshadow
    • Magearna
    • Totem
  • Necrozma can be shiny through event only (currently JPN and KOR region locked)
  • Lunala and Solgaleo can be shiny through event only.
  • Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Fini, and Tapu Bulu can be shiny via event only.
  • Zygarde can be shiny via event only - OT: 2018 Legends (Leyendas2018, Légendes2018, Legenden2018).
    • Shiny Zygarde 10% can be formed from a perfect Zygarde originating from this event. Thus, a shiny 10% forme can only have Power Construct.
  • Shiny Ultra Beasts can be acquired via Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only (not regular Sun/Moon).
  • Pikachu with Surf can be shiny if acquired via the gift in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
  • The Alola starters can have their Hidden Abilities due to an event in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.
Gen 6 (XY/ORAS):
  • The following Pokemon cannot be shiny:
    • Zygarde
    • Hoopa
  • Arceus can be shiny as of Generation 6 Event – M18 Désert (Désser) City Arceus. This Arceus has multiple wondercards one of which is forced shiny while the others are normal Arceus and have one of the 17 type-plates associated with it and the 18th being a normal Arceus holding a Silk Scarf. NO ARCEUS OBTAINED FROM GENERATION 5 AND UNDER CAN BE LEGALLY SHINY.
  • Diancie can be shiny by the (Japan only) Pokémon Centre Diancie event, or the (any language) All-Star's event.
  • Yveltal and Xerneas can be shiny as of a Pokémon X, Y and Z tie-in giveaway. Any which were caught are still hacked.
  • Legendaries caught in X and Y cannot be shiny.
  • Deoxys, Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon cannot be shiny and have the Pentagon.
  • Shiny Reshiram and Zekrom are only obtainable in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. Previous games had a shiny check in place for them.
  • Super-size Pumpkaboo line is available with hidden ability (Insomnia) only in a Cherish Ball via Spooky 2014 Super Size Pumpkaboo event. It was also possible to get a wondercard that also provided a female Pumpkaboo.
  • Pikachu can have Endeavor via a Generation 6 event.
  • Pokemon caught or bred on X and Y have "memories" that are checkable by an NPC outside the Anistar Pokemon Center, Pokemon brought over from previous generations (including those that have been hacked to look like they are from Kalos) and 6th gen events do not have memories and will say "The Pokemon seems to have a good memory, but it doesn't seem to be able to remember...".
  • Zoroark may have Sludge Bomb via a Generation 6 event.
  • Gengar (shiny) may have Sludge Wave via a Generation 6 event.
  • Regarding apricorn balls:
    • Only Pokemon obtainable in the Generation IV games Heart Gold and Soul Silver can be legitimately captured in an Apricorn ball. Transferring those Pokemon to Generation VI and breeding them will allow the offspring to have an Apricorn ball, along with any egg move combination, but they cannothave their hidden ability.
      • This restriction has changed in Gen 7. See here.
    • Using Pokemon that have an Apricorn ball (or any other ball) hacked on as a parent, and breeding it in Generation VI is not legitimate, and is a hack, even though it was legitimately obtained through breeding.
Gen 5 (BW/BW2):
  • There are no restrictions on the IVs and nature of most 5th gen wonder cards, including most of the competitively relevant ones. However, nearly all are locked to not be shiny.
  • Shiny Reshiram and Zekrom are only obtainable in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. Previous games had a shiny check in place for them.
  • Pokemon from the Dream World, Dream Radar, and Hidden Grottoes in the 5th gen games cannot be shiny.
  • Victini cannot be shiny.
Gen 4 (DPP/HGSS):
  • Only 4 natures are possible for 31/31/31/31/31/31 Pokemon caught in generations 3 & 4 (exceptions below). These natures are calm, docile, modest, and timid.
    • Wild Pokemon with variable genders (including Heatran) caught in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum have 7 possible natures for 31/31/31/31/31/31. These are calm, docile, hasty, modest, quirky, sassy, and timid. Wild Pokemon with variable genders caught in Heart Gold and Soul Silver have 6 possible natures for 31/31/31/31/31/31. These are calm, docile, modest, quiet, sassy, and timid.
    • Shinies obtained through the Pokeradar in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum can have any IV/nature combination, but it still requires ID abuse, and is considered one of the most difficult types of Generation 4 abuse. In most cases, unless it's someone who's proven themselves capable of doing such an abuse, it's pretty safe to assume it's a hack.
  • Generation 4 wonder card events may have any combination of IVs and nature. However, almost every generation 4 event is locked to not be shiny. The only exceptions are Manaphy who can be hatched shiny by transferring the egg to another save file, caught Shaymin and Darkrai from the Platinum Member Card and Oak's Letter events, and always shiny events (Eevee, Pichu, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, and Milotic).
  • Wild Arceus from Generation 4 are not obtainable as the event was never released.
Gen 3 (RSE):
  • Only 4 natures are possible for 31/31/31/31/31/31 Pokemon caught in generations 3 & 4 (exceptions below). These natures are calm, docile, modest, and timid.
    • Wild Pokemon (excluding Legendaries) from Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green, and Emerald have 9 possible natures for 31/31/31/31/31/31. These are calm, careful, docile, hardy, lax, modest, naive, rash, and timid.
  • Generation 3 wonder card style events are difficult to RNG. Extremespeed Zigzagoon can only be RNG’d for shininess and not IV’s or nature. In most cases, unless it's someone who's proven themselves capable of doing such an abuse for any of these events, it's pretty safe to assume it's a hack.
  • The “Wish” event Pokemon is virtually nonexistent. Any you see offered are almost certainly hacked.
  • A shiny Mew must be Japanese, from Hoenn, and at least level 30 as the only way to obtain it was through the Old Sea Chart in Emerald given out exclusively in Japan.
  • The 2011 event Celebi should have the OT WIN2011. OT GAMESTP Celebi is from an unreleased event obtained by ripping an unreleased wondercard rom and are hacked.
  • Shiny Deoxys can only be obtained through the 3rd gen event item, except in JPN Emerald where this item was never released.
  • Shiny Wishmkr Jirachi can only have 9 possible natures: Careful, Docile, Jolly, Naughty, Hasty, Serious, Lonely, Timid, Bashful
Gen 2 (GSC Virtual Console games):
  • Pokemon imported from these games will have their Hidden Abilities.
  • Any Pokemon can be shiny when imported.
    • As a result, shiny Celebi is now possible. Celebi can only be shiny when imported from these games.
  • When imported, every Pokemon will have at least 3 31 IVs, even if they can breed.
    • This means that certain Hidden Power IV combinations are impossible, including HP Fighting entirely.
    • Celebi will have guaranteed 5 perfect IVs when imported.
Gen 1 (RBY Virtual Console games):
  • Pokemon imported from these games will have their Hidden Abilities.
  • Any Pokemon (except the event Mew) not encountered in the grass/surfing can be shiny when imported. See here.
  • When imported, every Pokemon will have at least 3 31 IVs, even if they can breed.
    • The event Mew (OT: GF | ID: 22796) is guaranteed to have 5 31 IVs.
    • This means that certain Hidden Power IV combinations are impossible, including HP Fighting entirely.
Other:
  • XD/Colo Shiny Pokemon:
    • No Shadow Pokemon from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness can be shiny.
    • Poké Spot Pokémon, the DUKING trade Pokémon, the Mt. Battle Johto starters, and the starter Eevee can be shiny in XD.
    • Shadow Pokemon from Colosseum can be shiny.
    • The starter Umbreon and Espeon cannot be shiny in Colosseum, and neither can the MATTLE Ho-Oh nor the DUKING Plusle.
    • Colosseum Bonus Disc Jirachi can be shiny.
  • A Pokemon that does not normally have a premier ribbon attached from a special event is hacked. This is the result of improperly cloning through Pokecheck. However, this does not invalidate the legality of proper clones.
Feel free to PM a Wi-Fi moderator if you notice any errors on this list or wish for a new rule to be added.

Hack Check Discord

The following discord is not affiliated with Smogon Wi-Fi. However, if you want to receive a second opinion on a hack check, or potentially a more-thorough one, you can consider joining this server. Requests in this server are for mons currently in Gen 8 only.

Possible Pokeball + Pokemon combinations (6th Gen):
Since the GTS doesn't have check for illegal combinations involving Poké Balls, I've compiled a list of various ball legality combinations. Impossible combinations are not allowed to be traded here due to the no hacked parents rule, which can be traced in this instance. This list is for Pokémon bred in 6th gen only - all previous generation Pokémon can only be bred in the standard Poké Ball. An updated list for 7th (and 8th) gen can be found here. Listed in alphabetical order by the first Pokémon in the family in the Pokédex.

Hidden Ability Unova (Oshawott, Tepig, Snivy line) and Johto (Chikorita, Totodile, Cyndaquil line) starters are available in Pokeball only.

Nidoran♀ and Illumise allow for Nidoran♂ and Volbeat respectively for the category they're listed in. Master and Cherish Balls cannot be passed on during breeding.

Standard Ball set:
Poké, Great, Ultra, Premier, Repeat, Timer, Nest, Net, Dive, Luxury, Heal, Quick, Dusk.

Everything that can be captured except male-only and genderless species.

Level, Lure, Moon, Friend, Love, Heavy, Fast
Everything that can be captured in HG/SS, excluding those only available through PokéWalker/Bug Catching Contest. These are all incompatible with their Hidden Ability.

I thought it used to be required that the OT and origins of all pokemon in trade threads had to be provided in order to operate a trade thread, as to prevent problems like this from occurring. I see very few threads on here anymore that are like that.

All Pokemon that you did not breed or capture yourself are required to list this information. Pokemon you have captured or bred yourself may ignore this. If you discover any trade threads that have Pokemon the owners obviously did not capture or breed themselves, contact me or another Wi-Fi moderator and we will inform them to update their information or face a lock.

Just a small correction, there were shiny Wondercards events from Japan, all movie tie-ins iirc (shiny Hydreigon, Genesect, and I think Golurk), however these are set to always be shiny. I find your wording somewhat vague on this, I would mention that Wondercards in general are either always shiny or never shiny. It's implied, but not explicit in the OP.

And honestly, if you are a good trader, you should have registered your save file on Pokecheck and be prepared to share the legality analysis for your own stuff if there is doubt (except for events). There are a lot of shady people around and any form of transparency is good.

As a final note....fuck all of you people with swaths of banked mons. I am jealous lol.

Well I wanna bring a correction regarding the bold suicune. The reason it's hacked is actually because it is from 3rd gen and 6IV (Kanto is its region of origin).

It should also be noted that shiny 31/31/31/31/31/31 imposter ditto that came from previous gen is definitely hacked. There are some floating around.

I have a large selection of Gen 5 pokemon on my trade thread...could someone let me know if some are known hacks? I can't really tell. My thread link is in my sig. I'll remove any that are known to be hacked, so I don't trade them off.

Sorry for the dumb question but I thought Shiny Jirachi is actually possible? Or is it not?
The WISHMKR one can be shiny, yeah, but Bank doesn't let it through for some reason, I think.
Shiny Jirachi is possible (Colosseum Bonus disc only) It can't be RNG'd and Nintendo apparently refuses to believe it exists because it wasn't supposed to. Very much sadness.

I just wanted to ask if the following pokemon is legal

Darkrai

OT:
Mat 19849
Nature: Timid
IV Spread: 31/31/31/31/31/31
Came from Sinnoh

If further information is needed, let me know.

It should be noted that the Latias with the OT Kirk, and the Manaphy with the OT Mat are only hacked because of the premier ribbon. The originals both belong to known RNG abusers (cannibal and Bond697, respectively).
That's answered here (kind of, I'm apparently blind, but the information still applies). If it has no Premier Ribbon then it's fine.
