Project PU Victim Of The Week

approved by: Anty Magnemite galbia
OP stolen from: Aragorn the King
Amazing art by: Acast

Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly changing. However, there has always been and always will be threats. Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle top-tier threats. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.
Procedure:

1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokémon for discussion. Within ≈ 3 days' time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week.

2. I will post voting on whenever day 4 is. Vote for your favorite check and favorite counter, and I'll choose the top three of each on Friday.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

Rules:

1. Follow the definitions for checks and counters, by MattL in The Smog Issue 32!

2. Focus on posting PU-viable, but if you feel as if it's niche as being a check or counter to the selected Pokemon is big enough you may post.

3. The first two days of a week each user can only post one answer. From then to when I start voting, however, each user can post as many answers as they want.

4. Different sets of the same Pokemon can be nominated. For example, person a) can nominate Calm Mind Clefairy as a check to something, while person b) can nominate SPDEF Clefairy as a counter to the same thing in the same week.

5. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice.

6. Post calcs if not obvious.

7. If there is more than say 4 checks then start posting some counters and vice-versa to not have too much for one spot. Unless said Pokemon has no more counters or checks.

8. Have fun!
Edit: Reserving is allowed, but must be done in a 24 hour period. If not then someone can steal it.

Week 1: Specially-Biased Cacturne

Cacturne @ Life Orb
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Mild Nature
- Energy Ball
- Sucker Punch
- Focus Blast
- Dark Pulse

Cacturne is one of PU's newest drops and was added to S-Rank a while ago. It's sets can be a pain for most playstyles to handle, due to the variety of sets it can run NP,SD,Specially Biased. This set was chosen as it in my personal opinion is the best in the PU Metagame. Now, post checks and counters to the cacturne set and provide some discussion and input upon it. GL!

Monferno: Hard Check / Maybe Counter ?_?

NATURE (Monferno) @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- U-turn
- Flare Blitz
- Mach Punch
- Close Combat

Eviolite Monferno can switch in on Cacturne and isn't 2HKO'd by any of its moves and resists both of its STABs. Monferno can threaten Cacturne with Mach Punch, having a decent chance to KO Cacturne after some chip, or U-turn out, gaining momentum or OHKOing Cacturne.

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Moonblast
- Calm Mind

Physically Defensive Clefairy hard checks all forms of Cacturne with Thunder Wave+Calm Mind/Moonblast and can counter specially biased ones by switching into a Dark Pulse, Soft-Boiling until they get paralyzed, and proceed to Calm Mind up and easily win 1v1. Swords Dance Cacturne can't be switched into unless you're feeling lucky, but thanks to the magic of the yellow variety it can be done in a pinch.

Vullaby - Counter

Vullaby (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Foul Play
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

I've chosen Specially Defensive Vullaby as it is a better counter to Special Mixed Cacturne. Vullaby can take any one of Cacturne's hits and retaliate back with a 4x super effective U-turn that can deal a lot of damage or gain momentum in the process.

- 252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Vullaby: 108-127 (31.4 - 37%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

- 0 Atk Vullaby U-turn vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Cacturne: 212-252 (75.4 - 89.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

As you can see Focus Blast doesn't 2HKO even after rocks and Energy Ball/Dark Pulse does negilable damage that can easily be roosted off.

Gogoat: Hard Check/Counter?

DrinksOwnMilk @ Leftovers
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 228 HP / 48 Atk / 232 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Horn Leech
- Milk Drink
- Earthquake

4 Atk Life Orb Cacturne Sucker Punch vs. 228 HP / 0 Def Gogoat: 187-222 (42.1 - 50%) -- 32.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Dark Pulse vs. 228 HP / 232+ SpD Gogoat: 144-172 (32.4 - 38.7%) -- 98.6% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Focus Blast vs. 228 HP / 232+ SpD Gogoat: 144-170 (32.4 - 38.2%) -- 98.1% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
Cacturne Energy Ball vs. Sap Sipper Gogoat: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time

48 Atk Gogoat Horn Leech vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Cacturne: 72-84 (25.6 - 29.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+2 48 Atk Gogoat Horn Leech vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Cacturne: 143-168 (50.8 - 59.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

TL;DR Bulk Up Gogoat can come in on any of Cacturne's moves, take a hit or two, and heal off any damage it takes with Milk Drink. It uses Cacturne as set-up fodder with Bulk Up and simultaneously dodges Sucker Punch. It also 2HKOES Cacturne at +2.

rapidash check

Check
Rapidash @ Charcoal
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Will-o-Wisp
- Wild Charge
- Morning Sun

Rapidash is a strong check to Cacturne being able to 1v1 easily. It takes a good amount of damage switching into it making it a check rather than a counter, but can either heal the damage taken or get a burn to make Cacturne's priority basically useless. Flare Blitz + Wild Charge, pretty standard stuff providing dope coverage. Charcoal allows you to hit hard while not being worn down faster than you need to be.

Articuno @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Hurricane
- Substitute
- Roost

Status: Counter (as long as SR is down)

With Articuno's great natural bulk it can switch into anything Mixed Cacturne has to offer and quickly dispose of it with its great stab combination.
Example calcs:
252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Articuno: 142-168 (44.2 - 52.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Articuno: 142-168 (44.2 - 52.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Cacturne Energy Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Articuno: 79-94 (24.6 - 29.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Life Orb Cacturne Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Articuno: 126-149 (39.2 - 46.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Articuno Freeze-Dry vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Cacturne: 278-330 (98.9 - 117.4%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Articuno Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Cacturne: 440-518 (156.5 - 184.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

An alternate bulkier set with 152 HP avoids the 2hko from adamant Cacturne sucker punch whilst stomaching any other coverage it may choose to run.
All-in-all: Articuno is a more than respectable counter to Cacturne as long as you have reliable hazard control.

Ok Time is up now vote for your counters in order of which you liked best and the same goes for your checks!

WEEK 2: Monferno
upload_2016-10-16_20-0-58.png

Monferno @ Eviolite
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Close Combat
- Mach Punch
Monferno has been a consistent sweeper in the current metagame earning it the throne of an S-Rank . SD cleans most teams late game and can just outright break/threaten unprepared teams making it very scary right not. As usual post checks and counters to this Monferno set . GL!

Grumpig @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 80 HP / 252 SpA / 176 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Taunt
- Thunder Wave / Shadow Ball

Grumpig is a Hard Check / Counter to SD Monferno as it's decent bulk coupled with Thick Fat giving it resistances to both of Monf's STABs lets it switch in easily on Monferno. Due to Monferno being Adamant and not Jolly, Grumpig outspeeds and can OHKO Monferno with Psychic. Be careful of switching Grumpig in on a boosted Monf, however, as +2 Flare Blitz/CC does upwards of 70% to Grumpig.

252+ Atk Monferno Flare Blitz vs. 80 HP / 0 Def Thick Fat Grumpig: 109-130 (33.9 - 40.4%) -- 46.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Monferno Flare Blitz vs. 80 HP / 0 Def Thick Fat Grumpig: 219-258 (68.2 - 80.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Grumpig Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Monferno: 258-306 (95.9 - 113.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Swanna @ Life Orb
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Scald
- Defog
- Roost

Counter
It can switch in easily and KO with Hurricane, doesn't care for Mach Punch even at +2. Like Pelipper except this is much more offensive.

Vibrava @ Eviolite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Roost
- Defog

Vibrava can beat Adamant Swords Dance Monferno 1v1, being able to either roost off damage or either knocking it out with Earthquake.

+2 252+ Atk Monferno Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Vibrava: 220-261 (72.3 - 85.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 Atk Vibrava Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Eviolite Monferno: 182-216 (67.6 - 80.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Pelipper @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Hurricane
- Defog
- Roost

Status: Counter

Defensive Pelipper hard checks this variant of Monferno, being able to come in on any of its moves, even at +2. It can reliably roost off any damage and beat Monferno with scald or hurricane.
+2 252+ Atk Monferno Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Pelipper: 110-130 (34 - 40.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Monferno Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Pelipper: 110-130 (34 - 40.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Pelipper Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Monferno: 168-200 (62.4 - 74.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Pelipper Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Monferno: 234-276 (86.9 - 102.6%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO
