Hiya, I'm Melon, a sixteen year old high school sophomore from Washington. Generally in real life I'm quite sociable and make friends with the people around me fairly quickly in classes and sports, which makes school and all it's bullshit much more manageable. When I'm not doing school stuff or playing mons, I enjoy hanging out with friends, running, sleeping, or just doing other shit on the computer while I listen to a bunch of music. I also play lacrosse, something I absolutely love and have been doing for years (going into my tenth year I think) and I'll be looking forward to starting varsity when the season rolls around later this month.
How and when did you get your start in LC?
In my old house my older brother and I used to share a computer in his room. One Christmas my brother got a laptop from Santa, so he gave me the dusty old computer, which I just left in his room because I spent more of my time down there with my brother anyway and it would have been a pain to bring up to my room. One day in late 2012 I walk in and ask what he's doing and he starts excitedly explaining the concept on Pokemon Showdown to me. He starts explaining tiers, and when he explains that there is a tier composed entirely of babies I'm totally in. I took my time building a shitty BW LC team with Sandile and Natu (I'm practically Joltage) and my brother 5-0ed me with Moxie Scraggy. If I had won that game we probably would have just moved on to trying other tiers, but I was not going out on a loss. It took me one or two more tries to beat my brother, and by that time I was really starting to like LC and I was pretty much hooked. After that I started entering tours and laddering and got tutored by Charmander, which kept me going for a few months, but I was never good at BW LC and ended up quitting for the last few months before X and Y came out. Maybe a week or so before X/Y, I came back with a new name, WaterlessMelon, and that's when I started getting much more active in the community.
What is your favorite aspect of LC?
I really like how many different styles of teams can be used in LC. Pretty much everything that can be thought of besides Full Stall is viable, even shit like Tailwind, Webs, and Trick Room have a good amount of potential. Even though some playstyles and team types are more used and effective than others, I firmly believe LC is diverse as fuck in this area.
Is there any mon, playstyle, etc that you feel is underrated in LC?
Aipom is really fucking scary. It has priority, strong as fuck Fury Swipes, Knock Off which is broken, and Brick Break to catch cheeky steel types, it's really not an easy mon to play around without some Flame Body mon. Also, I'ma echo the words of Avs and say that Elekid is criminally underrated. Having something with 20 speed is amazingly nice, it hits pretty fucking hard, and it's such an obnoxious mon to switch into.
Anything you find overrated?
Never really understood Spritzee. It's decent on some teams, and yes it's a bulky little shit, but with shit like Magnemite everywhere right now and the fact that the way most people play it it's getting knocked off in the fist 5 turns consistently, I've never really found it good to use or annoying to deal with.
If you could change something about the current metagame, what would you change?
Fuck Diglett.
What players do you look up to / are good friends with?
When it comes to players I look up to, Superpowerdude takes the cake easily. I love this guy so much, he was unbelievably nice to me and to others and he was always willing to test teams or talk about the game or talk about anything. He was an incredible player when he played and would always win against me until I started tryharding. He was a great friend and I really, really wish he would come back and just talk on PS! sometime soon. He's a legend of Little Cup and his marvelous water spams teams will live on in infamy. <3
Also gonna give a shoutout to Splashyship here. Splashy was one of my best friends when I just started in early X/Y and we were all in SparkServer and shit talking each other. He's still around today and he's still the same old piece of shit he's always been, and I fucking love it. Thanks for being a friend all this time manana.
Splashyship: if you have adblock on while on porn sites
Splashyship: how u gunna meet hot local singles
Splashyship: or figure out ron jeremy's secrets
Lastly, thanks to all the other friends like OP, gangsterish, Mr. Nudistobeach, Oma, and Fiend. You people are pretty cool I guess.
What's your favorite playstyle and why?
I'd say my favorite playstyle is probably Bulky Offense, because I do like playing more offensively but Hyper Offenses strategy of sacking mons all the time has never overly appealed to me. That being said, I'd say I enjoy playing pretty much every playstyle in Pokemon, from Hyper Offense to the slowest of Stalls. Due to my rather poor team building skills, I usually stay with what I know, and that is Bulky Offense and Balance generally.
Why is your username "Melonz"?
My forums username "Melonz" is just the closest thing I could get to "Melon" which was the PS! name I wanted. The name Melon is just a shortened from of "WaterlessMelon" which does actually have a (bad) story behind it. Pretty much my dumbass friends and I were watching a school soccer game in 7th grade, and like every group of friends we were just talking about some random shit. Eventually we got on the topic of jokingly making a band, and we just started spewing out band names. Somehow, the band names we were saying started following the same pattern, which was "The ____less___." They were mostly extremely idiotic, but there were a few good ones, including my "The WaterlessMelons" which I believe we ended up choosing. Later when I came back for X/Y and needed a name to start fresh, I chose WaterlessMelon because it's a sick name.
Is there any advice that you'd like to pass on to new LCers?
I know you really want to make your CM Abra + Confide Rufflet Trick Room Gravity team to work, but I'd start off a bit slower. Newer players should really learn how to use more standard things, like basic VoltTurn and FletchDig teams, before they start innovating hard so that they understand how the metagame works and how it is different from other tiers. Other then that, I recommend doing basic things such as asking questions in the LC Room and laddering. The LC Room will usually answer a question if it's asked at a decent time and the ladder is an amazing tool to test out teams and learn the tier.
Lastly, do you have a team you'd like to share with us?
GG (Porygon) @ Metronome
Ability: Download
Level: 5
EVs: 76 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 196 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Last Resort
- Agility
A one man wrecking ball, this single Porygon is stronger than any team of 6 LC Pokemon could ever hope to be. Face this behemoth in battle and pray to the Nine Divines that you will escape with your life. Quite possibly the scariest and most devastating thing that can possibly be fathomed. There is no running. There is no hiding. This demonic gift from Hell will decimate both your hopes and your dreams, and will leave you physically, emotionally, spiritually and sexually destroyed...
Actually though I don't have a team I want to show. Feel free to ask questions though.
