Overwatch - Brigitte used FLAIL!

Overwatch is the new shooter by Blizzard which comes out on May 24. It's a 6v6 objective-based game with 4 different modes: Assault, Escort, Assault/Escort Hybrid, and Control. There are currently 21 heroes and 12 different maps. The game will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Open beta starts on May 4th at 4:00 PM PST and ends on May 10th. You can join the beta even earlier if you preorder by tonight. The game costs $39.99, but you can buy the Origins edition for $59.99 if you want extra legendary skins and goodies for other Blizzard games. Every expansion (new characters, maps, etc) will be free to download, and you can buy cosmetics for a reasonable price with in-game currency.

Some useful things:
- You can join us on #ow (#overwatch was taken...)
- Overwatch Subreddit
- Some channels with good gameplay: Seagull, Cynical Nerds, Overwatch YouTube
- Open beta details

If you're hesitant to buy the game, check out some of the gameplay. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money, but afterwards I realized it was completely worth it, especially with microtransactions being completely unnecessary.

Those of you who have already purchased:

Linux users get shafted again. :(
Hopefully they have the game ready for all operating system types by launch.

All I can tell people from an "onlywatch" perspective is use Configuration Recon more as it is actually pretty darn good, and never EVER self heal with Bastion or Roadhog while standing in front of an enemy (unless the payload only half a meter to go or something like that) or in a 1v1-6 where enemies can easilly find you behind cover. I see this very often in YT vids and it is always painful to watch. I personally believe dieing is the correct solution in those situation as you are more than likely going to die anyways and all you're doing if feeding them ultimates by self healing in front of them.

I still can't get over the dissapointment that this is windows only though (apple I have ethical issues with and windows has been the devil recently), hopefully this changes by May 24th. Perhaps I will see you all then.

Sorry to hear that. As a Mac user, I also felt pretty shafted when I heard the title would only be coming to PC, but I ended up setting up bootcamp and getting a 5 dollar subscription to Windows 10 student edition for the next 2 years. It might not be ideal, but if you do want to play the game, perhaps consider dual booting? Depending on where you are currently in terms of your education, your school might provide free Windows software. I won't be using Windows for anything other than Overwatch (and IRC when I'm playing Overwatch), so I don't particularly mind it.

Of course, you should definitely hold out until release. Maybe Blizzard will surprise us all and release Overwatch for other platforms come release.

I would like to add Disciple to the list of occasional OW content. He also has some of what he calls "Beginner-Friendly Commentaries" for each hero, although some of them are a bit out of date due to Blizzard tweaking some of the heroes coughnerfingZenyattatohellcough.

Ok, so this is really the first serious online game I have ever played and I have a ping of like 200 but everybody is jumping around like crazy, is that normal for 200 ping?

People stuttering all over seems more like an internet connectivity issue rather than ping though. It's possible to have smooth gameplay for 200 ping. Also why are you on 200 ping though? Did you have the region set correctly? iirc there's an option somewhere in the game that will show you an icon when you have poor/unstable connection and tells you that the server and your client is extrapolating and may not be showing the actual stuff. I'm an Onlywatcher though so I can't help you further than that for the options :X

My dad got the Origins edition and he gifted me an open beta code (because I haven't bought it) and it's pretty fun. I got a legendary Mercy skin on my fourth loot box from leveling up.

Playing D. Va is super fun, for a tank she has a suprising amount of maneuverability. Also if your team gets quad killed by D. Va's ult your team is bad and they should feel bad.

I remember seagull when he played for classic mix^ back in comp tf2 good to see that the team has reunited somewhat (like him playing with enigma) I am enjoying only watch will post opinions on characters later or something like that.

Maybe it's just because I'm bad but Reinhardt seems REALLY strong on payload offense. Like, overly so.

I guess cos the nature of Payload maps tend to have narrower paths and the shield can cover most if not the whole thing lol. McCree can throw a stun over a shield if you know how to. Zenyatta is a pretty good tank killer. Reaper against Reinhardt would be decent too. Pharah can just shoot him from above because if Reinhardt looks up to block you, usually that means your team can damage him for free on the front. Or you can be bold and concussion mine him and separate him from his team.

If you happen to not be on a hero with advantage over Reinhardt, just keep shooting his shield if you got nothing better to do. The more spam on it the better because he's basically useless when his shield breaks or you force him to conserve it.

He's also good on payload defense too, especially so on certain maps.

So far there's only 2 dudes I've been finding ridiculous. I cant quite say op as i have 0 idea how they want to balance this game, and I've only been playing since the... pre-open beta? The one where preorders played first.

Mcree: flashbang + fan + roll will wreck anyone and anything in a 1v1. So far I've been 'maining' Reaper and Mcree is very annoying to play against. Or maybe that's the point? Is this game designed with the intention of heroes straight up countering each other? Mcree basically counters everyone if you are halfway competent though.

Mei: That freeze (not ult, just the damn gun) is enough to make me want me to throw my pc outta the window. ridic frustrating if you play anything short range.

Reinhardt is w.e for me, the ones I've played against were only really annoying when the team actually worked with him. Otherwise hes an ult battery that pushes the payload solo... easy to flank as genji/tracer/reaper. You could also play bastion and melt his shield in seconds, and bastion is a decent pick for payload defense so i guess that feeds into the countering stuff i mentioned?

The game is very fun though, I don't regret pre-ordering it. Currently everyone is bad and doesn't communicate at all, but that's bound to change after launch...right guys?

McCree is the best hero at 1v1 hands down. Simply don't attempt to fight him 1v1 unless your live depends on it. Is also the only non Support hero to be used more than 100% in usage in competitive :0! Yea he's pretty ridiculous right now and I'm fairly sure that Blizzard is going to do another nerf to him, especially his fan. They did mention that having >50% of kills being right click instead of left click isn't expected iirc. You have to fight him either when his stun is on cooldown, or 2v1 him, or stay out of stun range. I don't think the game is made with hard countering in mind, but certainly each hero has advantages in some. Also keeping cooldowns in mind is also really important especially like against Roadhog, Hanzo, etc. Cooldowns are an essential part of the game and if you can exploit it, props to you.

Mei is not as good as McCree in 1v1, but will certainly punish you if you attempt to 1v1. I suppose it's cos you like Reaper so much :P She can also force 1v1s with ice wall separating people too. A pubstompish hero I guess but once you get used to it you'll know how to engage Mei if you have to.

Reinhardt isn't an ult battery if he doesn't put his shield down unnecessarily though :0 but if you're talking about flankers, well flankers/tank killers pretty much can always farm ults off tanks/supports. That's party their job I guess. Reinhardt has to trust his team to deal with flankers to be effective though. Fire Strike / hammer is not really reliable against them.

Glad you're having fun too!! Hahaha it's certain that the average skill is super low when beta just opened and it's having a little F2P syndrome now. I wouldn't say it would be better after launch for awhile until most players get a hang of it. Communications wise, yea it comes when people get more confident of the game. For a paid game I'd also guess more people will start to open up, like CS:GO. Comparing paid to F2P games, I think people are more open to communication and coordination in a paid game. Just my thoughts~~~

Also this game has a lot of useful voice commands and automatic responses which is a huge plus wooo

Just saying bumping people off the edge with D. Va is one of the most satisfying feelings ever. Also if you are having any trouble with tanks reaper is the quintessential tank shredder just fyi(or you could just use McCree because he is stupid).

anyone else find genji fun? mobility is S+, E autokills like half the heroes at close range (haha fuck bastion), and his ulti is just ridiculously lethal when you shift into a crowd

Yeah, I would definately say that he has at least top 5 ults in the game. And possibly the best Offensive ult (or maybe I am having trouble thinking of a better one).

This is really fun, I missed TF2 so much :p Thank god I have an excuse to be bad still

Lucio is really enjoyable, I like Mercy quite a lot as well (I played Medic a fair bit). Looking at Lucio's concept I didn't think they could make it feel as fun and fluid as it feels and his character not entirely suck. His E and ult both feel super impactful, I was worried going in I'd be a knockback bot. I don't get wall sliding though except I jumped past my payload once and died because of it.

Genji ult is amazing although it's slightly less cool when you see like 2-3 going at once. Or the coolest. I'm not sure

This game makes great use of elevation too

edit: add me homurabbit#1934

So is it just me or does bomb jumping on Junkrat feel really awkward? There seems to be little to no air control in this game and a lack of universal mobility options - most heroes can move either vertically or horizontally, only a few can do both which doesn't really feel fair. But I've only played for a bit so what do I know.

Lack of a hitsound sucks. Huge ass weapon models that you can't hide suck ass. The mouse sensitivity slider might be the worst I've seen. FOV only goes up to 103 which seems like a completely random number.

Game's pretty fun though. I like how Mercy and Junkrat are pretty much "fixed" versions of Medic and Demoman.

Ye there isn't air acceleration in OW. You can still air strafe but minimally and air strafing comes with a cost of drag. Basically if you air strafe you'll stall yourself and reduce speed. It's like having a one time mini air strafe.

I'm hoping they add some hit sound too! Though this game is already very sound feedback based from what I understand. There are a couple of obnoxious weapon models but overall I think they feel better than TF2's default models on default fov. IIRC they plan to implement a number input for sensitivity so it doesn't have to round. It's in the works~ I assume they worked out 103 FOV based on other games and their own game measurement to get a feel of what it should be. It used to be hard coded 80 lol. They did make maps based on map measurements in other games so FOV would be something similar.

Mercy >> Medic. Flying around is so good :O!!

Shame, I guess no crazy explosive jumps are possible :(.

And I agree that most weapons are better than TF2 models, but I'd still prefer to be able to turn the models off. The FOV thing is just me bitching about not being able to have 110, but I'll have to deal with that somehow.

And Mercy>>base Medic. Crossbow Medic>Mercy.

Also, Mei should totally move faster on the ground she freezes with her gun. I can't believe that's not a thing.

So with 10 hours played during the last 3 days, I can say for sure that I love this game. I've been spamming offensive heroes mostly (McCree, Tracer, and Genji are my most played), but I've found people like Bastion and Lucio enjoyable even when there are too many offensive heroes. Even the goofy people like Junkrat who I didn't think I'd find entertaining in the slightest were a ton of fun to play.

Right now my favorite character is Genji, but I think he's a bit inconsistent to use every match. McCree has never felt like dead weight once you get used to hitting people from mid/long range with his left click, while Tracer can either be ridiculous or super underwhelming depending on your aim. I'm just bad at Pharah, while Reaper has to be too close range for my liking. Soldier: 76 can be pretty fun, but he feels super vanilla so I've tried to avoid playing with him.

I found that as soon as early access ended and open beta began, the quality of matches went down very quickly. People don't seem to realize that it's an objective-based game and simply run around trying to kill people. I've had so many winnable games lost because my team refuses to try and force overtime. I assume this will get better once ranked comes out since you have to be at a certain level to play ranked, but it can be a little frustrating.

Bastion + Reinhardt is super good, but whenever I've played Bastion with a Reinhardt the Reinhardt will just focus on trying to 1v3 instead after a certain point (whenever on payload offense). I'm probably going to try and play with friends as often as possible when I'm actually playing to win because communication seems ridiculously important in this game. I've also found McCree + Reinhardt to be super good because you can just channel his ultimate behind the shield.

I really wish there was an easy answer to turrets other than Genji deflect and snipers, since Torbjorn and Bastion are currently very good at just camping out and killing people. I don't think I've actually gotten less than 25 kills in a Bastion game since nobody knows how to play against one. Symmetra really feels annoying too when you're a Tracer, but it makes a lot of sense that there's at least one surefire way of dealing with a hero with that much mobility. She just feels especially oppressive in maps with a room that you have to traverse to get a flank (King's Row first point, Hollywood first point) because she just sets up all her turrets and melts you.

I love the extras that Blizzard has been putting out. The backstory of all the characters is pretty interesting, and the mini-movies were all pretty interesting, even if they were kinda cheesy. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of them put out.

I hear mr hog is good at breaking bastion based defenses but I am not sure if he can hook Torb turrets or not. You may not kill the Bastion but you force him to back off and allow a push so long as configuration tank or a healer ult isn't ready (Transcendence, Sound Barrier, Res). If Bastion has a Rienhardt in front of it, then Symmetra is probably the best option for breaking that point defense down. Configuration Tank seems to have disgusting synergy with the rest of Bastion's play though; it can stop you from breaking the point really easy (it wipes your team and allows them to reset), so backing off until it is down is probably very advisable. Seriously though, I have seen Roadhog force pros off of their rare Bastion picks just with his presence so he obviously has very large potentail to break him if you are good enough at fishing.

I might get to play some open beta soon thanks to a dear friend of mine. I am hoping to get some games in with hog, 76, and McCree.
