Move Analysis: Focus Punch

Move: Focus Punch
Type: Fighting
Base Power: 150
PP: 20
Acc: 100
Effect: A powerful loyalty attack. The user flinches if hit.

Focus Punch, one of the most powerful moves. 150 base power hurts almost anything. Such a move as this must have a negative side, not? Well, it certainly has! First of all, focus punch will always be after the opponents attack, except if he uses counter/mirror coat/roar/whirlwind/revenge/vital throw. Ok, but for 150 base power, it's worth it, right? It also has another con, if you get hit by a direct damage hit(tackle for example), you're pokemon 'lost his focus', so focus punch wont do anything and you're opponent has essentially a free turn. So how can you use a move that won't do damage except when you are not hit?

1 Prediction

If you know that you're opponent is going to switch, then you can use focus punch because you will receive no direct damage. Example: you switch you're medicham into a blissey, if blissey stays, blissey dies, so blissey will switch, meaning you can focus punch anything that comes in, except a ghost, and with stab(in medichams case) it will be almost a guaranteed KO. Especially with a choice band. However, after you're focus punch, you're opponent isnt going to let you focus punch anymore, and if you hold a choice band, you are forced to switch, but you still had KOed A poke! You can also use focus punch if you think you're opponent is going to use a non direct damaging attack(toxic for example).

Example of a pokemon using focus punch with prediction:

Medicham (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Pure Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Focus Punch
- Brick Break
- Shadow Ball
- Rock Slide

Slaking (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Truant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Return/Double Edge
- Earthquake
- Focus Punch
- Shadow Ball

Kecleon (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Color Change
EVs: 236 HP / 56 Atk / 208 Def / 8 SDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Counter
- Focus Punch
- Magic Coat
- Filler

If you have the ability to mindread, this always works! Counter on physical attacks, Magic Coat on status and Leech Seed and such, filler for Special attacks, and Focus Punch if they don't attack you at all!

2 Sub-Punching

This is a popular tactic to focus punch. If you are faster then the opponent, and you know the substitute wont break by one of the attacks of the opponent, then you use substitute. Next turn you use focus punch. Even if you're substitute breaks, you're focus punch will still hit because the attack didnt hit you but the substitute.

Examples of a fast pokemon using sub-punch:

Gengar (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 216 Atk / 176 Spd / 116 SAtk
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Focus Punch
- Substitute
- Ice Punch
- Thunderbolt

This is at its best if fighting against a t-wave blissey, because once gengar set up a sub, blissey cant touch you cause substitute blocks t-wave and seismic toss dont affect gengar, meaning you can freely attack with a 150 base power attack!

However, if you are slower then the opponent, then you're substitute comes after the attack, meaning you can focus punch next turn, because you have a sure substitute:

Examples of a slow sub-puncher:

Aggron (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 SAtk
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Fire Blast
- Focus Punch
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Substitute

Tyranitar (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 68 Spd / 188 SAtk
Quiet Nature (+SAtk, -Spd)
- Crunch
- Focus Punch
- Thunderbolt
- Substitute

3 Spore and Yawn Punching

Spore-punching is using the move spore to make the opponent asleep, so you can freely focus punch! But beware since sleep talk is a quite popular move now and if sleep talk choose a direct damaging attack, you're focus punch will not hit. Breloom is the only pokemon who can do this(forget smeargle).

NOTE UPON SLEEP TALK: sleep talk cannot choose focus punch on netbattle, even if focus punch is you're only move besides sleep talk, sleep talk wil fail

Example of a pokemon using spore-punching:

Breloom (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Effect Spore
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Spore
- Focus Punch
- Hidden Power [Ghost]
- Brick Break

Yawn-punching is similiar to spore-punching. Yawn make you're opponent asleep after one turn, except when they switch out, thus giving you a free focus punch. Even if you're oponent doesn't switch, he get asleep so you can freely focus punch or switch!

Example of a pokemon using yawn-punching:

Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Oblivious
EVs: 148 HP / 240 Atk / 120 SAtk
Brave Nature (+Atk, -Spd)
- Focus Punch
- Yawn
- Psychic
- Ice Beam

Well, that's it, comment what you want, but please dont flame me cause this is my first analysis:lol:

added roar and whirlwind, spore and yawn punc, slaking, tyranitar. i dont think heracross need a mention, cause hes basicly the same as medicham and its just an example8)

Speaking of Counter you should add Counter + Focus Punch, while not being too successful it can work

Swampert @ Leftovers
-Counter
-Focus Punch
-Earthquake
-filler

Switch this dude into a cber or whatnot, once they know you have counter they won't want to hit you with it so you can get a free Focus Punch.

Yes I know it's pretty lame and Swampert has better things to do but it's worth a mention :/

Kecleon @ Leftovers
~ Focus Punch
~ Counter
~ Magic Coat
~ filler

Is a better example. If you have the ability to mindread, this always works! Counter on physical attacks, Magic Coat on status and Leech Seed and such, filler for Special attcks, and Focus Punch if they don't attack you at all!
