[OVERVIEW]

Despite possessing the highest Special in PU, Magneton is completely unviable. Its horrendous movepool limits it with only Electric- and Normal-type damaging moves, offering it no means to break past Ground-types. This is an enormous issue when the best Pokemon in the tier, one which will be used on every team, is Nidoqueen, a Ground-type that is very punishing if let in for free. While much rarer, other Ground-types like Sandslash and Graveler wall Magneton even harder. And if that wasn't bad enough, Magneton also struggles to beat Grass-types like Vileplume and Weepinbell, as while it can do some damage with its Electric- and Normal-type attacks, it usually gets overwhelmed by the status they can spread. Magneton's Speed also is very mediocre, being easily revenge killed by common foes such as Rapidash and Pinsir. Despite the allure of its high Special, access to Thunder Wave, and STAB that can OHKO foes like Fearow and Staryu, Magneton should never be used in a serious match.

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Thunderbolt
move 2: Double-Edge / Hyper Beam
move 3: Thunder Wave
move 4: Toxic / Rest

[SET COMMENTS]

Thunderbolt 3HKOes common foes like Rapidash and Arcanine, 2HKOes a few frailer ones like Pinsir, and has a 64.1% chance to OHKO Fearow. Double-Edge and Hyper Beam are Magneton's primary means of damaging Ground- and Grass-types, with the former being usable against healthy switch-ins and the latter letting Magneton finish them off more easily. Thunder Wave lets Magneton spread paralysis, crippling faster foes for it and its teammates. Toxic lets Magneton do something meaningful against Graveler and Sandslash, as it somewhat hurts their longevity. Alternatively, Rest helps Magneton secure endgames against some weaker special attackers like Staryu and Omanyte.

Magneton needs Nidoqueen removed before it can do anything, so Porygon and Machamp are effective partners for their ability to check it. Porygon also checks Graveler for it. While they can't switch in, Water-types like Staryu and Seaking can punish Ground-types switching in to wall Magneton. Rapidash, Arcanine, and Fearow can break through Grass-types like Weepinbell and VIleplume for Magneton. Once Ground- and Grass-types are removed, Magneton can support its team by using its decent bulk to cripple and KO powerful threats like Rapidash and Pinsir.

To make matters worse, Magneton's Speed is very mediocre, leading to it being easily revenge killed by common foes such as Rapidash and Pinsir. Despite the allure of its high Special, access to Thunder Wave, and STAB that can OHKO foes like Fearow and Staryu, Magneton should never be used in a serious match.

(is this the set instead of just packing both Dedge and Beam to help with Queen/Grasses?)

Thunderbolt serves as a powerful STAB attack, 3HKOing common foes like Rapidash and Arcanine, 2HKOing a few frailer ones like Pinsir, as (and?) it has a 64.1% chance to OHKO Fearow. Rest could be used over Toxic to help Magneton secure endgames against some weaker special attackers like Staryu and Omanyte.

Magneton needs Nidoqueen removed before it can do anything, so Porygon, and Machamp are effective partners for their ability to check it. Porygon has the added benefit of checking Graveler as well. While they can't switch in, Water-types like Staryu and Seaking can punish Ground-types switching in to wall Magneton. Once Nidoqueen and other Ground-types are removed, Magneton can support its team by using its decent bulk to cripple and KO powerful threats like Rapidash and Pinsir.
