Week 9: Specially Defensive Dragalge

Dragalge @ Black Sludge
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 240 HP / 204 SpD / 64 Spe
Calm Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Sludge Wave
- Toxic Spikes
- Dragon Tail / Scald
Due to it being one of the best defensive checks to Salazzle + Sun + Roserade, Dragalge finds itself on a fair amount of teams. Draco Meteor hits very hard, even coming off Dragalge's uninvested base 97 SpA stat due to Adaptability making it a 260 BP move. Sludge Wave provides Dragalge with coverage and another STAB alternative, letting it hit Fairy-types or avoid dropping its special attack. Toxic Spikes are for hazard stacking on predicted switches, while Dragon Tail is used for increased residual damage+ phazing, while Scald is used for the 100% burn chance on predicted Doublade or Registeel switches.

Venusaur @ Life Orb
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Rash Nature
- Growth
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Earthquake

This is venusaur. He like to play with his friend torkoal. He like to feel the sun. He like to go fast. But most importantly, he like to grow. But whenever he grow dragalge, magical sea dragon is bully, he cannot hurt dragalge because dragalge resist his stabs. Dragalge resist the sun. There is only darkness. But venusaur, this make him mad, venusaur go to mountains to learn new tricks and MAKE GROUND SHAKE. Trainer sends out smug sea dragon next time, and he make ground shake and ohko sea dragon after growth. Then he sweep. He also hit regi for 2h ko even after protect spam which is very useful.

Relevant Calcs

+2 4 Atk Life Orb Venusaur Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 348-411 (104.1 - 123%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 4 Atk Life Orb Venusaur Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Registeel: 224-265 (61.5 - 72.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Salazzle @ Poisonium Z
Ability: Oblivious
EVs: 8 HP / 248 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Dragon Pulse

One of the main reasons that make Dragalge SpD so good is: it can reliably check Salazzle. A lot of teams use Dragalge as its main Salazzle answer, and switch directly into it when Salazzle appears, however Salazzle can beat Dragalge with Rocks if using Dragon Pulse, you just Dragon Pulse in the first switch then once you NP again Dragalge is no longer a switch. Withoyt HP Grass makes Salazzle lose to Rhyperior, Seismitoad, and Quagsire, but the first two aren't hard to wear down and the last one is run in stalls that always have another Salazzle answer, and you can also save your Z-move against Flygon and Tyrantrum.

248 SpA Salazzle Dragon Pulse vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Dragalge: 108-128 (32.3 - 38.3%) -- 2.5% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
+2 248 SpA Salazzle Dragon Pulse vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Dragalge: 214-252 (64 - 75.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Celesteela is Life

Chesnaught @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Wood Hammer
- Synthesis
- Earthquake

Dragalge can usually safely switch into Chesnaught and threaten it out with Sludge Wave or set up TSpikes, but with Earthquake, Chesnaught can lure and deal a ton of damage to Dragalge (If you want to secure the 2HKO you can run 52 Attack EVs on Chester), which is helpful for teammates like Salazzle who can struggle with the kelp dragon. EQ is also useful for nailing Salazzles who always set up Nasty Plot on Ches, which is pretty nice.

0 Atk Chesnaught Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 168-198 (50.7 - 59.8%) -- 85.9% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Registeel @ Occa Berry
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Protect
- Toxic
- Earthquake

Salazzle normally beats Regi but Regi can Earthquake it here, although you have to run Occa Berry to not instantly die.

Hitmontop @ Assault Vest
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
- Sucker Punch

Hitmontop is pretty rare in RU, and even if it is used, it is assumed to act as a defensive support mon with Toxic, Rapid Spin etc. Dragalge can be lured by Hitmontop since it resists Hitmontop's Fighting STAB and is immune to Toxic. Earthquake easily 2HKOs Dragalge and can even kill it once it has been whittled down by Rocks and the Close Combat damage it takes upon switching in.

252+ Atk Hitmontop Earthquake vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 212-250 (64 - 75.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ Atk Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Dragalge: 94-111 (28.3 - 33.5%) -- 97.8% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Houndoom @ Darkinium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power Grass

It's Houndoom's standard set, but it can help Sun teams to deal with Dragalge because +2 Black Hole Eclipse always KO SpDef Dragalge after rocks/1 layer of Spikes. It also can help Sun to deal with Cresselia and Registeel. If you feel that BHE isn't enough, you can use a more wild set like Psychium Z with Dream Eater, which can secure a KO even without rocks at +2 lol.

+2 252 SpA Houndoom Black Hole Eclipse (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 204+ SpD Dragalge: 300-354 (89.8 - 105.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Roserade @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Leaf Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Sleep Powder/Giga Drain/Toxic Spikes

So Hidden Power Ground on Roserade is not only a move that lets you hit Dragalge for Super effective damage it also hits common threats like steeltypes and poisontypes that naturally resist your dual STAB. It also has a reason to be run over HP Fire being able to hit Salazzle (and Drapion I guess) and thus gaining a Moveslot over running HP Fire and Extrasensory.

252 SpA Life Orb Technician Roserade Hidden Power Ground vs. 240 HP / 204+ SpD Dragalge: 161-192 (48.6 - 58%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery.

252 SpA Life Orb Technician Roserade Hidden Power Ground vs. 240 HP / 204+ SpD Dragalge: 161-192 (48.6 - 58%) -- 61.3% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

So yeah If you have Rocks up and predict a switch in HP Ground 2 HKOS Dragalge and if Rocks aren't up you still have 61% to do so too.
