Let's Play! Let's Catch 'em All in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon! (Part 31 up: Wish Cave (2) & End))

Let's go recruit some things!

... after we deal with the last bit of this plot.

Pokémon Square music

Why aren't you out there hunting down Red's team?
... why aren't you?

Lombre: That's easy for you to say...
It's too much for us...
Snubbull: They say Red's team has gone way far out there.
If we went, the best we could hope for is maybe the Lapis Cave.
lol we started here at level 5 and I'm sure y'all have been around much longer, is there any reason you're not above level 17-ish by now?

Shiftry: I joined the chase...
But they fled into Mt. Blaze.
For the life of me, I can't go in there. And that's where I lost their trail.
I'm a Grass type, see. Fire doesn't agree with me at all.
Excuses, excuses. Green did it! Green had no choice but to do it! Loser.
Carrier hinted at this before, but it's implied Shiftry might have been one of the voices talking when everyone was going on about us going into Mt. Blaze. Like the guy who said "Mt. Blaze is doomed desolation" or something.

I don't know what became of Red's team after that.
... But those fugitives... To think they would risk Mt. Blaze...
They've grown up tough! I can't keep up!
Hahaha!
Yeah, it's worth praising us and laughing when we were literally almost killed. Solid.
(I'm a little bit bitter over these townspeople. Or at least the commentary is.)

and you, Gengar? What are you doing with your time? Standing here and yelling at everyone else for not attempting to murder us?

Lombre: You're so full of big talk! What about your team, Gengar?
You just hang around in the square and don't do a thing.
Walk the talk. You guys go.
you tell him Lombre!
side note: Gengar's goal is to rule the world. How the hell do they expect to accomplish this when like... all they did after running us out of town... was stand around in the square doing nothing?

Gengar: We're out of that picture. Kekeh!
Our role is to receive word about Red's demise. Kekekekekeh!
Okay, and what do you plan to do after that (whether or not it happens)?

Lombre: Tch! Just appointed yourself that...
lombre droppin some real truths over here

OH SHIT SOMETHING HAPPENED

Medicham: Red... Red is...
Gengar: Oh! Finally! We're finally rid of Red! Kekeh!
Ffs gengar let her speak.

Medicham: No! It's the opposite!

AWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAAAH

Gengar: Kekeh?! What did you say?!

Hey everyone, what's crackin?

Caterpie: ... Red!
Snubbull: Th-they're back...

Green is very chipper for walking straight into a meeting of people who formerly wanted to kill him.

Whew! We finally made it back. We've been gone for so long...
I like how he's just conveniently ignoring the fact that everyone here wanted us dead.

It feels kind of nostalgic to be back in the square, Red.
Gengar: Hey, Green!
Green: Hm! Oh, it's you, Gengar. It's been a while.
Green is absolutely ready to fight (and I'm with him)

Gengar: (Kekeh! What's with that smug confidence?)
Kekeh! Maybe...)
maybe......... what

Green: Gengar! Everything you said was completely wrong!
Red had nothing to do with it!
Red was innocent!
Gengar: Ugege?!
Lombre: Wh-what?!
Shiftry: Is that true?!
Well, if you don't believe us, Storm here was someone we met on the road and who also showed up to the Ninetales meeting, so. Yeah, it's true.

Green: Yup. We met Ninetales and asked.
Red isn't the human from the legend.
We're back because we discovered the truth.
Gengar: Ugegegegegegegeh!
Gengar is having trouble processing this information. good.

Gengar: Kekeh! W-wait a second! You can't be trusted yet.
If you're going to make that claim, let's see some proof.
Unfortunately Gengar doesn't know when to quit and demands evidence the sneaky bastard. Which of course we don't have because Ninetales told us an oral story and recording technology is nonexistent in this universe.

Green: P-proof?
Gengar: That's right! Some hard evidence! Kekeh!
Something tells me you'd consider it faked even if we had it, though.

Let's see some proof! Come on, out with it!
Green: Proof... We don't have any proof...
well dang

Gengar: Kekekekekekeh! It's too bad you don't have proof!
You came back for us so we could get rid of you easier! How conveniently foolish! Kekekeh!
Oh go to hell.

BOSS BATTLE??? IN THE SQUARE??? IM TOTALLY DOWN
... except nobody moves.

Gengar: ............... Kekeh?! What's wrong, everyone? Don't you want to be rid of Red?
Caterpie: I... I always believed in Red!
yeah man you're not going to fool Caterpie!

Caterpie: You don't fool me!
wow ok i didn't actually know this quote was coming when i wrote that last bit of commentary

Gengar: Ugeh!
Shiftry: ... I... I'm out.
I was saved by Red's team before.
I joined the chase with a heavy heart because of your urging...
But I simply can't think of Red being bad in any way.
Gengar: Ugegegeh!
Lombre: I've heard enough too! I believe Red!
Snubbull: Yeah, that's right! Who needs proof?
okay so if everyone believes me then who the hell voted to run me out of town and kill me

Gengar: Ugegegegegege!
Green: E-everyone...

We get a visitor who drops some papers in the square.

Ekans: What? What is this?
Maybe try reading it to find out?

Medicham: ...... It looks like a newspaper... Doesn't it?
oh my god are we all illiterate

<Pokémon News> = EXTRA =
Red Innocent!
Red met with Ninetales under the watchful eye of Alakazam...
HA, THERE, THERE'S YOUR STINKIN PROOF

... And proved that it had nothing to do with the human in the legend.

r e k t

-End-
Gengar: Ugegegegegegegegegegegeh!
Lombre: You rotten...
Gengar: Gegegeh! R-run!
And Team Meanies hightails it off the screen. Good riddance to bad trash.

Shiftry: Stop, you liar! You conned us!
Shiftry, Lombre, and Snubbull then run after Team Meanies.

Green: Yup! It's good to be back! We're back like we promised.
now join our rescue team like you promised
Caterpie: ... Sniffle...
I'm so glad... Red isn't suspected anymore...
Green: Yup, I'm glad too.
We won't have to keep running from everyone anymore.
Red.
We're both exhausted. I'm going to get some sleep.
Time for a well-earned rest in our own beds!

Our rescue team gets revived tomorrow! Let's try to do our best!
Yeah!

Storm goes off to his Friend Area. Astute readers might notice that I never mentioned Absol before in any of the Friend Areas I obtained, and that's because Absol comes with its own Friend Area: Darkness Ridge, which houses Vulpix, Gastly, Misdreavus, Sneasel, Sableye, Shuppet, Duskull, and Absol lines.

Following this, we get some sleep. The next morning...

Never better!

Green: All right! We'll get right back into doing rescues.
What, we can't take a day off? Really?
Pelipper flies by and delivers some mail.

And look, Pelipper is bring us mail already.
Let's try to do our best like we always did, Red!
YEAH!

Checking out the Mailbox...

This happened. I don't have any Blue Gummis, sadly, but this happened nonetheless.
There are four Friend Areas which can only be gotten through missions. I'll be attempting to pick up all four (or at least, a very specific one) before the next plot event. I'm going to delete this for now, because I don't have any Blue Gummis and from all my time playing the game it looks like two missions with Friend Areas will never show up at the same time. But I'll be sure to take the next one that has a Friend Area reward!

We go to Pokémon Square to prepare for the mission, and everyone has nothing but apologies and nice words to say on our behalf. (... Even if Kecleon does admit to having been convinced we were responsible.)

For our first mission, let's go to Lapis Cave. Somehow it's trivial to get there despite the dungeon being literally on the other side of the continent. Consistency!
Right now, I only have the Friend Areas for Illumise, Volbeat, and Tangela.

Red levels to 25 and has the option to pick up Scary Face. A Speed-lowering move is pretty good on bosses, but I'd like to keep Smokescreen, so I turn Scary Face down.

... and unfortunately we fail to pick up any recruits here. Next!

Fun fact: As far as I know, this is the only time in the entire game in which the player's gender is stated after the quiz at the beginning.

I don't have any Gummis, can we not do this???

I accepted a mission in Mt. Freeze. Recruitables: Swablu, Zangoose, Chimecho, and Seviper.

Despite fighting more than a few Chimecho and Zangoose, the first and only Pokémon to join our team in Mt. Freeze is this Seviper. Named Repiv... anyone get the reference?

forgive me if I don't believe either of you

Also, this happened! Finally one we can take!

On that quest, this happened. Named Meliodas per Hydrachomp's suggestion.

He was the only Pokémon we recruited in the dungeon though.

Our reward was Sky Blue Plains, which is good because that's the Friend Area I wanted (you'll see why soon, hopefully). Sky Blue Plains houses the Igglybuff, Lickitung, Chansey, Girafarig, Snubbull, Smeargle, and Ralts families.

That night, plot.

...............
...... This...............
...... That dream...... Again......
Red there is absolutely no need for so many ellipses.

...... It's been a while......
Maybe because you met Gardevoir not terribly long ago?

Speaking of.

Red: ... Gardevoir. There's so much I want to ask you.
Why do you appear in my dreams?
Gardevoir: As an agent of spirits... I must watch over you...
"Agent of spirits", what in the hell is that?

Because that is my role now.
Red: ... An agent of spirits?
Glad to see that Red is just as confused as I am.

Gardevoir: Yes.
I fell under the curse of Ninetales in the place of a Trainer...
And became a presence without a physical form like this.
But somehow you still have, like, a point to existing despite this curse. Why

Red: Trainer...? You mean the human that was in the legend about Ninetales?
... Oh, yeah. I forgot this game low-key acknowledges the existence of humans as Trainers specifically. Huh.

It's awful that your Trainer would abandon you and run away.

... you say, literally smiling

Mean and conniving... My Trainer wasn't a nice person. Truly.
Gardevoir is still smiling through this statement

But... I don't hate my Trainer.
... go on

Red: Huh? Don't hate your Trainer? Why not?
Gardevoir: Well... I wonder why myself. I don't quite understand...
My Trainer did some terrible things, but somehow, I can't bring myself to feel hatred...
that sounds like idk Stockholm syndrome or something, you might wanna look into that Gardevoir

My Trainer had some quirks, but there were good qualities too.
that's (debatably) true about everyone though and there are some people you should still drop from your life because they're toxic. Gardevoir you might wanna rethink this. Especially since you can't even tell me what the good qualities are

Gardevoir: And, when it happened, I was desperate...
How appropriately vague!

Red: When it happened...? You mean Ninetales's curse?
Gardevoir: Yes.
I protected my Trainer from Nientales's curse with my entire being.
If the Trainer is facing danger...
It is our duty to protect the Trainer with our lives... We Gardevoir are that way.
I wonder what evolutionary process even led to Gardevoir being like this. They're basically like psychic dogs of a sort, aren't they, then?

I kept my Trainer safe... That alone was enough to make me happy.
What about that whole "the Trainer shall be reborn as a Pokémon" thing from the legend? How do you feel about that?

Red: (... Protect the Trainer even at the risk of your own life...)
(... It's amazing what Gardevoir did.)
Gardevoir: Oh, I must mention, I don't mind the form I have taken.
I mean, you get to like, spy on people and shit. That's pretty rad.

I live on this way with pride in the role I have been given.
Red: ... Role?
seriously you're only just now attempting to figure this out, Red?

Gardevoir: Yes.
All things have a role. They all serve a purpose.
Just as I have my own role to play...
You, too, have a role to fill...
Yeah well I am the video game protagonist.

You have... come here to perform a certain role...

Le gasp!

Red: What...? What are you saying?
Unfortunately, cutting off Red's attempts to get to the heart of the matter yet again, there is another earthquake.

Red: Wah! E-earthquake?!
Gardevoir fades too.

No! Wait! I need to know more...
rip

What do you mean wasn't there, that was pretty obviously an earthquake.

I think I had that dream again...
I think I spoke with Gardevoir... She said something important...
can't be that important if you forgot it

That's it! She did say something!
Then we get a flashback to the dream that just happened and the whole thing about Red having a role and that's why she became a Pokémon.

Gardevoir knows! She knows why I became a Pokémon.
... yeeeeeeeeeesssss...?

She also said something about a role... What did she mean by that?
do we REALLY not know the meaning of the word "role"

After this we regain control of Red.

chipper as ever I see

... Huh? What's the matter? Is something wrong?
Oh, I get it! The earthquake earlier!
Red, you're worried about the same thing I am. I should've guessed, Red.
Uh... that's not it at all sorry

Alakazam's team hasn't come back yet...
They say that Groudon is powerful. That has me a little worried.
Ok that's a legit concern. Maybe Groudon ate them.

But Alakazam's team is tough too. They should be fine.
u know what they say about assuming though
... don't do it

Anyway, we agreed to let Alakazam deal with Groudon.
We don't have any choice. We have to wait for them to come back.
That doesn't mean we should let them get eaten though...

We have to do what we can for our part.
... my goal is to make a bunch of friends and I'm not sure how that's going to help anything else??

So let's do our best with the rescue team!
YEAH

Alright, we get to take some more missions!

... Except this happens.

Wobbuffet!
(This Wobbuffet, unlike the other Pokémon in this game, seems physically incapable of saying anything other than its name.)

Wynaut: We have a notice on the Bulletin Board outside the Pelipper Post Office.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: Please look at it for me. Please, please.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!!!
Wynaut: Please help me. I have to go now.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
... and then they leave. That was... that was very weird.

Green: What was that? What was that all about?
Glad to see Green has just as many questions as I do.

That little Pokémon... Did the boy say he was Wynaut?
I think he wanted us to look at the Bulletin Board at the Pelipper Post Office.
What do you mean "I think", that is exactly what he said.

Maybe Wynaut and his friend have a problem on their hands...
So, they may have a help-wanted notice on the Bulletin Board.
Yes, that is exactly what is being implied.

Only one thing to do. Let's go check the Pelipper Post Office's Bulletin Board.
Sounds good to me!

... Though first, this. It's time for the game to get rekt.
(Bullet Seed is a multi-hit ranged move, which is broken in this game. I replace Green's Quick Attack.)

Well, this is new.
Immediately after accepting the mission...

... we cut to this.

Did you two put up that job?
Wynaut: Yup, yup!
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: A bad Mankey gang is going wild in our forest. Everyone is upset.
who might this "everyone" be

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: We don't know why they rampage around...
Have you tried asking politely?

But they are always angry and attack anyone they see!
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Green: Oh, no... That is a problem.
Red, we should go.
Yeah sure why not. ... Oh god I did not mean to make that pun

Wynaut: Thank you! We're counting on you!
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
This opens up the Uproar Forest dungeon.

This might seem like a sidequest that got randomly opened up but it actually is scripted, surprisingly.

Recruitables: Venonat, Aipom, Seedot, Roselia (Red-exclusive), Nuzleaf, Mankey. Of these, I can only get Seedot this time around.

Tiny Woods music - used for Uproar Forest

I name it Acorn because I'm fantastically unoriginal.

Also this happens! This is a monster house, where a ton of Pokémon drop from the sky and attack. If you're not prepared, they can be devastating. Here, it's just a mild annoyance.
Monster Houses often contain a lot of valuable items (such as TMs, Orbs, or lots of money), so it can be worth your time if you're looking to get some rare items. They can also be good places to recruit, if you so desire.

Monster House music

This happens in the middle of it. Named Nuzlocke.

then Acorn died when it got double-teamed by the Venonat brigade. rip Acorn we hardly knew ye :( alas

But we did manage to recruit another! Also named Acorn lol

On Floor 10, we get Stuff.

Mankey 2: We don't like to brag or nothing, but...
Mankey 1: We get furious real easy. You know that?!
Mankey 2: What really irritates us is when we see some dim-witted face...
Excuse you?

Mankey 1: ............... Wrooooooooooar!
That vacant expression...
Wow ok that's not intensely rude at all

Mankey 2: Gwooooh! It's ticking me off! I'm seeing red!
Mankey 1: Mukkkeeeeeh! Get 'em! It's frenzy time!
IT IS ON

it splat tim
These guys are no threat whatsoever. Throwing an Iron Thorn (a throwing item whose damage is based off the thrower's Attack stat) is enough to OHKO them. It went Iron Thorn-Green's Bullet Seed-Iron Thorn, and that was the end. There was also no threat to Acorn or Nuzlocke, fortunately.

We cut to this.

That should teach them not to be so wild.
Wynaut: Everyone, thank you for everything, really.
it'd be nice if Acorn and Nuzlocke were here to be thanked too

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: Yes, we're filled with gratitude!
This is our thanks.

okay what

Green: .................. This... A peeled Chestnut?
lol he's not a fan either

Wynaut: Yes. It's a peeled Chestnut. You see, we...
Don't have any money.
well... damn

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: So we can only give you a Chestnut as our reward. Are unhappy?
PANIC!!!!! PANIC

Green: Um... No. No... We're fine with this.
Peeled Chestnuts are delicious...
I think they're great! Hahahaha! (A little money would have been nice...)
rip Green's wallet

WHAT!!!! WHAT IS THIS

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet?
Green: That Mankey gang...
Did they chase us here to get us back?
if they did u might wanna like. run

They approach us.

Mankey: That's right, you!
You got lucky! You don't mess with us!
you guys died in one hit each ffs

Mankey 2: We're not gonna lose this time! We'll pulverize you!
Mankey 3: Mukkeeeeh! Crush them!
They come to attack (and Red and Green just cower like dumbasses) but back off.

Mankey 3: Whoa! L-look at that!
Mankey 2: Ch-Chestnut!
wat

Mankey 3: It is! It's a peeled Chestnut!
Green: Wh-what?

Mutter, mutter...
Green: What are they doing?
Wynaut: They look like... They're having a discussion.
Yep, that's definitely what it looks like.

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Green: What's going on?
Mankey 1: ... Uh, listen. You got something we want...
That peeled Chestnut you have... Can we have it?
you literally just tried to murder us and you have the gall to ask for favors what is this nonsense

Mankey 2: We, uh... Love peeled Chestnuts!
Mankey 3: Like, we love them so much, we can't think of a life without Chestnuts!
o...kay?

Green: Can't you just get Chestnuts by yourselves?
lol

Mankey 1: You know how Chestnuts have that spiky shell?
Trying to peel that spiky shell... It hurts. And we end up losing our tempers!
Oh suck it up. We all have to deal with shit. Literally we fled to the edge of the continent in an attempt to not get murdered and you're complaining about spiky food?

That's why we're asking. Give us that peeled Chestnut. We'll do whatever you want.
Well when you put it that way......

Green: Hmmm... Red, what do you think?

Yeah sure why not

Green: I know! Listen, Mankey gang, how are you with physical labor?
ok where is this going

Mankey 3: Physical labor? You mean muscle work?
Mankey 2: We have muscles... But we don't like work.
I know you're Fighting type but I don't see any muscles, anywhere.

Mankey 1: But if it's for that peeled Chestnut...
Green: OK! This is what we'll do!
We were going to make our rescue team base something more impressive than this.
Mankey 1: Rescue team base?
Green: That's right! Our rescue team base!
If you would help us with the building of our rescue team base, we could give you this peeled Chestnut!
Huh... not a bad idea, Green.

How does that sound?

Mutter, mutter...
Mankey 1: OK. We'll help!
Hell yeah!

Green: Really? You'll help us?
Mankey 3: Yeah. Leave it to us!
Mankey 2: We'll carry in the materials and get the place built. Double-quick!
Mankey 1: ... In return... Hand over that peeled Chestnut.
wow so demanding

WHAT
WHERE DID YOU COME FROM

Caterpie: I'll spit silk for gluing things together
I mean thanks but seriously where did you come from

... uh... yay?

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Wynaut: I felt bad because we only had a peeled Chestnut for your reward.
Okay that's fair I guess

Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!!!
Green: Sniff... Thanks everyone!
Mankey 1: OK! Let's get a move on!
Mankey 3: OK!
Mankey 2: OK!

Construction work began on the rescue team base of
Red's team Wildfire.
Several days later...

Green: Our base is coming along quickly.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Green: We owe everyone for this.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Caterpie: But there's still lots to do.
We still have difficult things to do.
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Green: That's true. But we're getting close, right, Mankey gang!
... Huh?
Look! Over there!

the hell are y'all doin, come back

Caterpie: We need to keep working.
Mankey: Don't wanna.
EXCUSE YOU WE MADE A DEAL

Green: What?!
Mankey: This work's too boring! How do you expect us to keep going?
these guys are spoiled brats aren't there

Mankey 2: Yeah, that's right. I don't wanna do this anymore.
Mankey 1: We might change our minds if you get us more peeled Chestnuts.
w o w I cannot believe this

Green: ... What is this about?
what do you MEAN what is this about they juST TOLD US

Mankey: We just can't be bothered. We need peeled Chestnuts to motivate us.
oh bugger off

Green: We have a problem, Red.
I don't think the Mankey gang will work unless we get them another peeled Chestnut.
I guess we'll have to give the Mankey gang any peeled Chestnuts that we find.
tch fine

Anyway, after this the game gives a save point. Bit of an odd stopping point, but I don't want to delay this update any further. Next time: we try to motivate the Mankey gang and hopefully finish our base!

The base "upgrades" are worse than regular Charmander house IMO. Seriously, the finished house creeps me out a bit. Midway is OK though.

Carrier: Gonna have to agree with that. I guess it looks "more professional" but... it's a giant head, it's a little unnerving. Just let me have my nice brick fire house plz thx

Last time: we started work on our rescue team base, but the Mankey gang seem to have given up unless we can get them another Chestnut.

Chestnuts are only found in one place: Uproar Forest, floor 9. It seems to be common to find exactly one on the floor (though I've found two in the past - point is, I can't remember a time when I've found none) so all it takes is a separate trip to Uproar Forest to get a Chestnut.

I did pick one up on my first trip through the dungeon, so I have one in my inventory that I can give to the Mankey gang.

Mankey 2: Oh! A Chestnut! We want a peeled Chestnut!

I learned today that if you say no, something pretty damn funny happens:

Mankey 1: What?! You won't give it up for us?!
Mankey 2: Who do you think you are?!
Mankey 3: Mukkeeeeeh! Get them!

However...

... R E K T

... W-we lost...
ahahaha oh man

And then they go back to standing around like nothing happens. Nice.
Let's give them the Chestnut for real.

Red peeled the spiny shell and handed the peeled Chestnut over.
Mankey: Yes! A peeled Chestnut!
All right, you layabouts! Get it together! Chop, chop!
Mankey 2: Why don't you quit lounging around yourself?! Get moving!
Mankey 1: We'll get hustling on renovating your rescue team base!
Mankey 3: We'll carry in the materials and get the place built. Double-quick! You just wait!

Supplied with another peeled Chestnut, the Mankey gang got motivated...
And returned to work on the rescue team base's renovation.
As a result...
The rescue team base's completion moved a little closer.

And then we cut back to this. Nothing has changed. They need another Chestnut to finish the job. I only had one, so let's go back to Uproar Forest!

Green picks up Mega Drain over Absorb in the dungeon. Mega Drain has 17 PP to Absorb's 18, so it's a pretty decent trade-off considering the power is higher.

We spawn into a room that has two Chestnuts. Nice. (Would have been good to have that before, though!)

After finishing the dungeon...

... we can hand over the Chestnut (with the same dialogue as last time)...

Supplied with another peeled Chestnut, the Mankey gang got motivated...
And returned to work on the rescue team base's renovation.
And finally...

Yaaaaaaaay!

Green: The day has finally arrived...
Red! It's ready! Finally!
Our... Wildfire's rescue team base!

Well... that's not creepy. Why did we decide it needed to be a giant Charmander head again?

Green: Sniff... It's so cool. Every time I take a look at our rescue team base, I only see coolness.
Its resemblance to you is a nice touch, Red!
... If you say so, Green.

Caterpie: We all worked very hard!
Wynaut: It was very hard, but it was worth it!
Wobbuffet: Wobbuffet!
Green: Sniff... Everyone... Thank you!
Mankey 1: Say, there. There's something I want to ask...
If this rescue team base is finished...
Does that maybe mean... You won't bring us peeled Chestnuts anymore?
Buddy, we can't coddle you forever! You agreed to help if we gave you Chestnuts. That was the agreement. You are now done helping.

Green: Hahaha! Of course!
We're finished with work on our rescue team base.
To our Mankey gang! Sincerely, thank you for everything!
Yeah thanks I... guess.

uh
this does not bode well

Mankey 2: ...........................
Mankey 3: .......................................
All Mankey: Ukkeeeeeeeeh!

Green, don't tell me you don't see what's about to happen

Yeahhh I figured...

Then everyone runs up and manages to pull them off. Because as we learned the Mankey gang is weak.

As a result of everyone's desperate efforts to stop the Mankey gang...
The rescue team base was saved.
As for the Mankey gang, they promised to keep from rampaging...
In return for more peeled Chestnuts, they returned to their forest.
ok but who is their supplier

And that is how...
The chaotic renovation of the rescue team base came to an end.

The inside of the base is pretty amazing great to be fair, I love that floor design.

... but... what are the other three????

This mission shows up at the post office. This one is a side quest, and it needed the Friend Area Sky Blue Plains to unlock, which is why I was so pumped about it. Let's take it.

Upon accepting it, we get this from our heroes.

What does it say? Can you read it?
no i am illiterate

Red read the letter.
"Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Smeargle.
I once had aspirations of becoming an artist.
oh, don't you all

Then, one day... There was an incident of an unforgivable nature...
I fled because I didn't want to become an adult. But then I lost my way...
buddy no one wants to become an adult, deal with it

I now find myself in this forest, unable to extricate myself...
I am lost in the Howling Forest! Somebody! Please save me!"
howd you write this letter if youre trapped there

Green: ............... He ran away because he didn't want to become an adult... What's that about?
I don't really get this... But let's go rescue this Smeargle anyway!
sure why not

alright, Howling Forest time!

Tiny Woods music, used for Howling Forest.

Recruitables: Azurill, Houndour, Poochyena, Whismur, Spoink, Shuckle, Pidgey, Loudred, Snorlax, Exeggcute. Recruitables at this time: Houndour, Poochyena, Spoink, Shuckle, Pidgey, Exeggcute.

Midway through its appearance changes drastically.
And we still don't have any recruits, annoyingly enough.

Ah! Never mind, there is one!
Named April after my traditional nickname for Houndour (which was in turn based off a really shitty fanfic I wrote like 12 years ago).

wow that was quick.

[1/28/17 10:13:40 AM] Altissimo: i need a nickname for houndoom
[1/28/17 10:13:47 AM] boyfriend: heckdoom
[1/28/17 10:13:55 AM] Altissimo: k

so yeah

Red levels up to 30 in the dungeon. 30 is the level at which recruit bonuses start happening. Now, every Pokémon has a flat +5% chance of joining our team, which may be useful in the coming dungeons. Sweet!

On Floor 15:

Hello there.

I can't get out... I'm hungry... I'm in trouble...

YOUR SAVIORS

Did you maybe come to rescue me? Am I glad to see you!
Then we all warp out of the dungeon in a big happy party.

... becoming an adult?

Green: No problem, Smeargle. But what made you run away in the first place?
Your letter said something about not wanting to become an adult...
Smeargle: That is...
Oh!
what is it

oh hello
Other Smeargle: Yeah, I see him. We've got to get him back quick!
Green: More Smeargle? Two of them...
Hey, Smeargle. What do they want?
smeargle doesn't sound like a pokémon name anymore

Smeargle: They're... My friends.
uh... okay?

The other Smeargle approach.
Second Smeargle: Now, come with us. The grown-up ritual is ready for you.
grown-up

Other Smeargle: Quit fighting this. Have the paw print applied without a fuss.

yes that is Smeargle hiding behind Red. Solid

If I have to get that paw print on my back... I'd rather not become a grown-up!
okay WHAT is this nonsense

Green: What was that? What grown-up ritual?
thank you Green for your support of my confusion

Second Smeargle: It is a custom among us Smeargle.
Other Smeargle: When we reach a certain age, they mark our backs with paw prints to show we are grown-ups.
Second Smeargle: They do that by taking the front paw... and pushing doooooowwnn on the back...
Smeargle: I can't live with anything so tasteless.
its literally a ritual for you guys, whatchu on about

I have dreams of creating great art, so I have certain standards for design that I swear by.
Oh, I see! - it's a pompous artist Smeargle.

Smeargle: ... I know! I have decided!

Well then. All right.

I will participate in your rescue activities!
So... I won't return to the pack! This is where I will dedicate myself!
I mean I'm glad to have a friend but you didn't even ask, you just kinda... decided

The other Smeargle consult for a second.
Second Smeargle: Is... Is that so? Then there is nothing we can do.
Other Smeargle: We will inform our elders of your decision.
We wish you luck in your new career as a rescuer.
As a resc- didn't you want to become a great artist though???

Whatever, the other Smeargle leave.

Green: Oh, wow... That's one pushy way of getting a job.
No kidding.

But, that's OK.
You're on the team now!
We expect your best, Smeargle!
Smeargle: Yes! Thank you!
One thing I am good at is drawing and painting.
You don't say!

For example... Let me see...
Ah, how about that?

I could perhaps redesign the flag?
If you wish to alter the flag's design, you must tell me, please.
So yeah, after joining the team, that's a thing Smeargle can do. None of the flag designs look quite as good as the default, IMO, though.

And about Smeargle's name...

[1/28/17 10:47:01 AM] Altissimo: i need a name for a smeargle. its an artist pokemon
[1/28/17 10:47:01 AM] Altissimo: and this ones really full of himself
[1/28/17 10:47:21 AM] boyfriend: bitchworth
[1/28/17 10:47:25 AM] Altissimo: … ok

I regret this immediately

Anyway, following that, we then are done for the day.

... Why am I only just now getting this issue of Pokémon News?

X-RAY SPECS!!!! THEY'RE HERE!!! BUYING THE SHIT OUT OF THEM
X-Ray Specs are the best damn held item in the game. Equipping them to your lead Pokémon enables it to always see where other Pokémon and items are on the floor you are on. This can be useful for: identifying Monster Houses from afar (since they usually contain higher than normal numbers of items), avoiding Pokémon you don't want to fight, making sure you've gotten all the items from a floor before moving on, identifying which enemy Pokémon was the one that picked up that item you wanted, identifying where your rescue client is, and in general seeing where enemies are you so you can go beat them up and try to get them to join you. I never finish this game without a pair of X-Ray Specs, no matter what. (And yes, I do have enough money for them; I just need to go get some from the bank.)

We end up taking a mission at Mt. Freeze.

Take a look at the top screen and you can see how the X-Ray Specs work. It looks like there aren't any enemies except this Shelgon at the moment, but the X-Ray Specs will show me if any others spawn in while I'm traveling. The blue dots are items.

Yass!!! Named Harmony after a friend's old nickname for her Zangoose.

Named Giotto because the Italian artist Giotto designed the bell tower at the Florence Cathedral and Chimecho is a bell and I'm going to shut up now (for the record this is typically how my nicknaming process goes, though, I go through free association until I hit on something that sounds like a name)

The next day, I take a mission at Howling Forest.

This happens pretty quickly. Named it Missile after the dog from Ace Attorney/Ghost Trick.

Red picks up Flamethrower. I take it over Metal Claw.

Nicknamed Dingo because that's the name of my Mightyena in my current Emerald playthrough. Which was also a boyfriend invention.

My next mission is at Uproar Forest, which is uneventful because there isn't anything to recruit there (I want to hold off recruiting a third Seedot in the hopes that I can just recruit a Shiftry instead). Following that, then, we head to Mt. Blaze... when's the plot coming, again?

Named Shuckie.

Oh! It's plot time!

Red seems unnervingly unfazed by this.

It rumbles for a few seconds.

............ I guess it settled down...
...... There've been a lot of earthquakes lately...
please do not use "there've" it makes unpretty red lines in Firefox :(

Anyway thank you for your insightful commentary Red!
Let's go see how Green's doing.

... The earthquake woke me up.

Did you notice the earthquake earlier?
... THE EARTHQUAKE WOKE ME UP.

It's hard to get decent sleep when there are so many earthquakes.
sad

NPCs? On my screen? It's more likely than you think.

Lombre: We need you at the square! Everyone's gathering there.
Green: Is there something wrong?
Lombre: I'm not really sure... Shiftry's calling everyone out.
that's an unfortunate word choice in light of the current day associations with "calling [...] out" lol

He's getting the other rescue teams to come.
Green: Red, let's go!
YEAH!

wow that is a lot of Pokémon I've never seen before!

Lombre: Looks like they sent out to a lot of rescue teams for help.
I've seen some pretty famous leaders from faraway places.
ok but out of curiosity what are those places? There aren't any other settlements in this game. There's a lot in PSMD but this isn't PSMD.

That Shiftry... I wonder what he's planning to do with all these rescue teams?
we're going to be lured to his dungeon and beaten to death

I, uh... It's not my style to get up in front of everyone like this, and...
no1curr shiftry

... Sorry. This isn't the time for that!
There's big trouble! Alakazam's team went underground...
But they haven't returned!
Well that is a problem.
Everyone reacts with shock.

NPC: Wh-what?!
NPC: Is that true?
Shiftry: Yes, unfortunately.
Alakazam led his team underground to quell Groudon...
Wait, how do all of us in the square know this? They left straight from Mt. Freeze.

And that's it. We haven't heard anything from them.
... They're underground, what do you expect?

To be honest... we have no idea what became of them.
they dead
Everyone starts talking amongst themselves.

NPC: No idea? How is that possible?! This is Alakazam you're talking about?
NPC: But they haven't come back. That's for real!
NPC: That's right... And it sounds as if Groudon is out of our league...
pfff if u believe hard enough anything is possible!

NPC: What? It's that tough? This Pokémon named Groudon?
NPC: Why don't you go underground and see for yourself?
this second NPC has some grudge against the first NPC. the hidden backstory of Mystery Dungeon characters

NPC: Hunh?! You've gotta be kidding me!
NPC: There's magma flowing everywhere underground. I'd burn up if I went anywhere like that!
Yes that is how heat physics work! Except we, including Green the Grass-type, would be just fine.

Shiftry: Quiet, please! Be quiet!
There's no denying that it is dangerous underground.
It's not a place where just anyone can go.
... Sounds about right...?

That's why I asked so many rescue teams to gather today.
I propose that a special team be formed by choosing the best of the best.
Who will step forward?!
Who among us will be the heroes to take on the challenges underground?!

Bruh, I'm totally down. Let's go.

Lombre: Don't bother, you guys.
Green: What's with you? Can you step aside?
Lombre: You guys have gotten a lot tougher, that's for sure, but...
Bro you literally forced us to by making us run to the end of the earth, shut the hell up.

There's plenty of tougher Pokémon out there.
... so?

Shiftry: Will no one step forward?!
WE are WILLING but SOME ASSHOLE is TRYING to PREVENT US

That was Blastoise speaking. Fair enough, Blastoise is prolly the best option here against a Ground-type.

NPC: Whoa!
NPC: It's B-Blastoise!
NPC: You mean... Team Hydro's roughneck Blastoise?!
lol seeing this after having a Squirtle on a team that I'd named Hydrospark was pretty great

NPC: Those waterspouts on his back can rocket water so fast that it punches through thick iron plates!
So yeah Groudon should be no problem!

Blastoise: It's rumored Groudon is a Ground type.
Groundon is a Ground type? You don't say!

I am a Water type. Strong against the Ground type.
My Hydro Pump will put Groudon down in one shot.
you'd better believe it!!

Octillery: I'll join the party too.
NPC: Woohoo! It's Octillery!
NPC: She's Team Constrictor's leader.
I love how all these teams are themed. C'mon we all know the best team is a ragtag buncha whoevers led by two starters!

NPC: She's known for persistent and clingy attacks. She ensnares foes with her tentacles, then head-butts them!
NPC: She'd be nasty to face in any battle of endurance.
thunderbolt, done

Octillery: Darlings, when I see a tough Pokémon, I want to tangle with them.
... THAT SOUNDS VERY WRONG

Golem: Say, how about not forgetting about me?
that is a very bizarrely phrased quote
also bro rock is weak to ground

NPC: Wow! Golem!
NPC: He's the most brutal out of Team Rumblerock!
NPC: His body is rock hard. He's supposed to be able to withstand huge explosions without taking damage.
Golem: If Groudon's awakened underground, that suits me fine.
I'll use my Rock Throw to keep it buried underground.
... I really don't think that's how it works, Golem.

They Are Here

Shiftry: No one could complain about your selection.
I could. Replace Golem with Meganium and we'll be set.

We will have these three rescuers head underground!
And me n Green are gonna take along because we are the heroes.

NPC: Yeah! Good choice!
NPC: You're representing us! Make us proud!
what are they the ambassadors to Groudon or something??

Blastoise: Let's go!
And they immediately leave with no prep or nothing. Why do I get the feeling this isn't gonna end well...?

NPC: Win it for us!
NPC: Save Alakazam's team!
Lombre: See? They look pretty tough, eh?
WE'RE TOUGH TOO YOU KNOW

Let them handle things.
Green: Hmmm... It can't be helped, Red.
yes it can lets just chase em down

It cuts back to this. Yes we can just chase them down!!! Not hard.

Blastoise's team can take care of things underground.
We'll keep doing the best we can in our rescue work.
aight i guess!

... and I'mma stop there for now, update's pretty long again. Next time: more missions and more plot!

Upcoming recruit options: Apart from the ones mentioned prior, we may also get Onix, Shuppet, Duskull, Tropius, Lunatone, and Solrock.

Finally, exams are over and I can start to actively contribute again!
Not sure if it's a good thing, but I kind of want to know what the fanfic was about :').
And as much as I like your boyfriend's nicknames, I will try to nickname a few more:

Onix --- Dacian; Onix may be based on a European dragon called a 'wyrm'. When looking at its Wikipedia page I stumbled across the word Dacian and well that name stuck.

Shuppet --- Teru/Bozu; From the type of doll named teru teru bozu, which is the basis of shuppets design. Ira, the latin word for anger, would fit a female shuppet/banette a bit better.

Duskull --- Couldn't really think of anything, always name mine either Umbra (the latin word for shadow) or Phatos (a way to say dead in ancient greek).

Tropius --- Always nickname this one Ariera, which is the latin name for banana :').

Lunatone --- As it already has the latin name in its name, I always use the greek alternative of Mane (well it's actually μήνή, pronounced Mènè, but that doesn't really roll off your tongue.)

Solrock --- The same goes for this one. So I always go with Alea (I could go in depth with the pronunciation and origin of the word, but I'll spare you the long and boring stories.)

Illumise/Volbeat --- I always bundle these together and call them: Lumen and Lux (two ways of saying 'light' in latin)

Tangela --- I have to go with the overdone nickname of 'Medusa' for obvious reasons, feel free to not choose this one as it's bad and I know it.

Ditto --- Proteus; This is a kind of Amoeba, one of the possible basis of ditto's design.

Rhyhorn --- I always think of Triceratops, when looking at Rhyhorn. Don't really know why, but that's why I always call it Corono/Corona, which is a named after a relative of the previously mentioned Dinosaur: Coronosaurus.

Swablu --- My nickname depends on the gender. For male, I always go with Byssis, the Latin name for cotton, and female ones gets the name Nefela, a way of saying cloud in ancient greek.

As you can see I really like searching for Latin and Ancient Greek names, which means after following those classes for 5 years, I have finally found a use for them.
Additionally, would you like possible names for the evolutions as well?

Hydrachomp: Thanks for all the name suggestions!
About the fanfic: It was 10 chapters long and about a human named April who got turned into a Houndour. (This was before Mystery Dungeon was a thing.) She ended up working for Team Rocket. And rebelling against them. And killing Mewtwo. It wasn't a very good fanfic lmao

I take a mission in Mt. Thunder because all the better missions were escort missions and that is not happening unless I get a Friend Area out of it. No recruits, though.

... speaking of. Back to Mt. Thunder!
Still no recruits tho. The hell is this? I didn't sign up for this >:(

Good, this is the Friend Area I wanted.

Also this happened. Woohoo!

Plot time. That was appreciably quick.

It's, of course, another one of these. It settles down before long, though.

Red: There've been so many quakes lately...
I wonder when they'll settle down...
only after we kill Groudon

it must be important if you're entering my personal house to tell me this! You never enter my house.

A lot of Pokémon have already gathered there.
Let's go to the square right now!
Sounds good.

Everyone from the last time there was a party in the square is here.

Green: What's going on here?
Lombre: Hey, Green. W-Well...
... You should just go see for yourself...
Well, that's certainly ominous.

Uh... oh.

Green: Shiftry! What happened here?!
Shiftry: ............... They were wiped out... In the underground dungeon...
Well, they're not the protagonists! This was bound to happen.
(also thanks to Mr. Plinkett I now can't not read protagonist as pro-ta-gon-ist)

Green: You're kidding!
Blastoise: Groan... That place... It's rough, seriously...
youre a water type, how bad could it possibly have been

Octillery: ... We couldn't get far enough to even see Groudon...
welp

Golem: I don't want to ever go back to a place that bad...
You're a Rock type, you're excused.

Shiftry: ... It appears the dungeon underground... is far worse than we'd imagined...

RE ALL Y I thought you left after we embarrassed you in front of everyone and then chased you out of town. Can you please leave again??

Green: Ge-Gengar!
What are you saying?! It's only expected that we try. This is for saving Alakazam's team.
Yeah they're probably like... dead by now so we should prolly get on that.

Gengar: Kekeh! You really find thinking hard, don't you?
excuse you

Gengar: Even they look smart compared to you.
seriously bro

NPC: It's too much... Even Blastoise went down...
NPC: It's gotta be awful tough.
NPC: Who'd want to go into a dungeon that dangerous?
NPC: There's no way. I can't go. I burn too easily.
pfff weak excuse. Green is a Grass type

NPC: I can't take earthquakes.
and Red is a Fire type seriously stop this

NPC: It'd be like going and knowing full well we'd get wiped...
so?

Green: ... E-everyone...
Gengar: You see? Even they finally seem to understand their situation. Kekeh!
can we please stop making everyone feel completely hopeless thanks Gengar

Shiftry: I... My leafy fans would burn up...
Green: E-even Shiftry...
Yeah he gave up around Mt. Blaze so are you really so surprised?

Gengar: Kekeh! Get over it! Don't expect to be rewarded just because you tried!
who said anything about doing it for the reward????

Sometimes, it's better to wise up and give up!
........................ Huh? Did I say something profound? Kekekekekekekeh!
... Not really? Because you're just wrong in this case lmao

Green: Urf...
Red... I don't know anymore...
What should we do?
It's easy. We go try to kill Groudon!

Even if it's the impossible...

The framing of this makes it seem like if we said "no" Green would just be like "yeah I guess not" but we all know that's not gonna be how it plays out. Whatever, let's go!

Green: ... Yes... I think so too.
oh do you now

OK, Red!
Everyone, listen!
We're going! To rescue Alakazam's team!
Yes we! Are!

NPC: Wha-what?!
NPC: What did they say?!
Gengar: Ugegege?!
Oh shut up you. You are a completely ineffective villain.

NPC: Hey, who are they?
NPC: Can't say I know them...
NPC: It's Team Wildfire. They're well known around these parts.
NPC: Team Wildfire...? You mean the lot that were suspected of involvement in the Ninetales legend?
That sentence sounds so criminal. "Suspect of involvement", and then it ends with the bizarre "Ninetales legend", it just doesn't work.

NPC: I heard about that! Weren't they living like fugitives until recently?
NPC: Can they handle it? They don't look very tough.
WRONG ANSWER

Green: It's true -- the rescue might be too much for us to handle.
But... we're still a rescue team.
To help Pokémon suffering from the natural disasters...
I wouldn't really say Alakazam's team is suffering from them but eh

That's why we started up our rescue team!
Isn't that true of all the rescue teams?
That's why I want to rescue Alakazam's team more than anything.

Never giving up... That's where Team Wildfire stakes its pride!
NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER

And you're so much smarter, I take it?

Why don't you do like everyone else and wise up?
cause that's not how we roll

Shiftry: ... No. Green is right.
REKT

Gengar: ... Ugeh?
can you please stop making those unholy noises

NPC: ... That's right. I wasn't thinking straight... out of fear.
Gengar: ... Ugegegeh?
Gengar, it looks like the tides are starting to shift!

NPC: We all forgot the most important thing. We are rescue teams.
NPC: ... Pride...
NPC: We have it too! Pride as rescuers!
Yes!

Gengar: Ugegegegeh! Have you lost your senses?!
I would really prefer if you would be quiet.

Why would you listen to that clown and, worse, be persuaded?
I guess I'm just a better orator than you!

Why do if you're facing certain defeat?!
It's a hell of a way to die that's why

It speaks!!!

He gets up, much to the astonishment of the townsPokémon.

... We've only failed once.
I mean I guess that's true.

Green: Blastoise!
Blastoise: ... This is no time to be lying around!
You were kinda knocked out so I don't really blame you

Gengar: Ugegeh!
how does it feel to be constantly wrong

Octillery gets up too.

Octillery: Yes, no more wallowing in woe-is-me self-pity.
And Golem as well.

Golem: If we give up, that's how it ends. Not for me.
Green: Octillery! And Golem too!
Gengar: Ugegegeh! You lot, that wasn't the tune you were whistling just a little...
lol WHO CARES people are allowed to change their minds buddy

NPC: Aye, that's right!
NPC: There've got to be ways we can get through!
NPC: If we all pull together, we'll be sure to find a way!
NPC: We'll conquer the dungeon by having all the rescue teams cooperate!
YEAH! Sounds good to me!

Everyone: Wroooooooooooaaaar!
that's the noise y'all made while HUNTING ME DOWN

Gengar: Ugegegegegegegegeh! Are you dreaming?!
Can you please stop literally no one likes you

Don't say I didn't warn you when you get into a world of pain! Ugegegegeh!
NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS GENGAR

He runs off, thankfully.

Blastoise: Thank you, Green.
You stopped us from throwing away the most important thing we have -- pride.
I don't really see how that relates but ok

My thanks from all of us.
Everyone! It's time to get to work!
YEAH

Let's show them what we rescue teams are really about!
Everyone: Wrooooooaaaar!

yeah well fortunately he is gone

Green: But now, we're getting the chance to go to the underground dungeon.
I'm exciting

We're not leaving until tomorrow, but I'm jumpy with anticipation.
well please get some sleep so you don't DIE tomorrow

Let's spend today getting ready for the dungeon.
Let me know when you're all ready to go.
all right, sounds good

I set up for the dungeon and report back to Green.
Everyone in Pokémon Square is moved to tears by Green's emotional speech by the way, kinda nice.

Green: We should both get a good night's sleep.
And we'll set out tomorrow!
good night's sleep sounds p appealing rn not gonna lie

Anyway, Red goes to sleep.

And we get another dream sequence.

...............
...... I'm...... In that dream again...
Gardevoir appears.

............... Gardevoir...

Yes, yes it is.

Red: Yes. They make it sound like one terrible place...
underground is scary man

I wonder if we'll be OK...
Gardevoir: You will be fine.
I am certain that you will succeed, Red
we're the protags so yeah

You have my support. Please, go with strength.
Red: I will. Thank you.
I'm feeling a little braver now. I will go for it.
youre a Charmander you were literally called brave in the personality quiz

By the way... Gardevoir, do you know?
What it's like underground? Or what Groudon is like?
Gardevoir: No... I'm sorry to say... I can't envision it...
well you are spectacularly useless

Red: ... OK.
I thought maybe you knew something, the way you said it.
She knows we're the game's protags! That's all.

Gardevoir: No. I only wanted to give you encouragement.
I'm sorry...
u should be

Red: No, no. That's fine too.
I'm happy you tried to cheer me up. Thank you.
Gardevoir: But... There is one thing that I can foresee.
SOMETHING IS HAPPENING

Red: ... Huh?
Gardevoir: Your role... is coming to its end, little by little.
Uh... that tends to be how the progression of time works, yes. But I don't think that's quite what Gardevoir means here.

Red: My role... is ending...?
Gardevoir: You became a Pokémon in order to fulfill a certain role...
And that role brought you here.
Gardevoir begins to fade.

Now, that role... is finally drawing to its conclusion.
Red: Gardevoir, tell me!
What is my role?
Why did I become a Pokémon?
Gardevoir: When the time comes...
I think I can tell you when this adventure is finished.
You mean the underground adventure? Well... that's another objective worth shooting for, I guess.

Gardevoir: Au revoir...
hey look she actually speaks French, even though everyone knows that

Red wakes up and goes to meet Green outside.

Green: OK, this is it! Let's do our best and save Alakazam's team!
We head off...

... but Red has other things on her mind.

(She will tell me everything when this adventure is over...)
(Is going underground the adventure she meant...?)
c'mon Red what else would it be

(Will she tell me if we rescue Alakazam's team...?)
Green: Hello!

you're not paying attention to my nonverbal cues green step it up

Anyway we head off...

... to Magma Cavern. Which is on the other side of the continent but it took like five seconds to get to.

Whew... Look at the streams of lava.
It's going to be scorching hot in the dungeon, I think.
You don't say!

There should be other rescue teams making their way through even now.
Let's try our best like always!
You know it!

Magma Cavern music

Recruitables: Sandshrew, Graveler, Mawile, Golem, Grimer, Onix. Recruitable right now: None. I know I said Onix before, but that was banking on me getting a certain Friend Area from a mission, which didn't happen. So this will be solo with Red and Green.

Green picks up Agility shortly in. This was the game-breaker-move that everyone encouraged me to get, so I replace Screech with it.

The lower floors are very magma-y as you can see.

After 23 (!) floors, we hit the dungeon midpoint. Let's continue.

Magma Cavern Pit Music

well that is certainly a sleeping Steelix

The second half of the dungeon is short, with only one floor. On the second floor...

I'm certain we've come quite far already...
There's an earthquake following this.

Green: Waaah! Qu-quake!
... Whew! It's over.
Hey! Red! Over there!

Oh! Look who it is!

Charizard: Urrrrgh...
Green: What happened to you?
Charizard: We challenged... Groudon... And wiped out...
Green: G-Groudon?!
Yeah, who else, Green? That's only what they came here to do.

Tyranitar: Grrgh... We... It crushed us...
Green: That's right. What happened to Alakazam? Where is Alakazam?
Alakazam is... Still battling Groudon...
has he been battling him for like a week or something wtf
also no fair, Alakazam's allowed to keep fighting even when his teammates die, why not us?! >:(

Green: Red! We've got to hurry!
They run off.

Charizard: ... Be careful!
Then, we advance to the 3rd floor...

... where we see a familiar face.

Alakazam: Hm! So it's you!
Stay back!
This opponent... is no laughing matter!
Voice: Grgaaaaaaaaah!
Alakazam: H-here it comes!
Green: Coming...? Wh-where?!

Then Alakazam dies I guess.

Green: A-Alakazam!

... great

Green: Maybe... Was he defeated?!
nah just eaten

Urgh... It's our turn next.
But I'm not going down without a fight!
Voice: Grgaaaaaaah!

LET'S GO
I get to use a full four sun-boosted Flamethrowers as Groudon approaches and Green uses Agility (which enables a few bonus attacks). When Groudon is finally adjacent, the next Flamethrower kills it. That was hilariously anticlimatic, rip Groudon

Groudon falls over, and three lights appear in the room...

... which turn out to be our friends.

Tyranitar: Urrgggh!
They slowly get up.

Charizard: Did you do it? Groudon?
What does it look like?

Green: Are you OK?
Alakazam: Yes, fine.
We will be fine. But we must get out immediately.
Green: What about Groudon? Will it be OK?
... really, Green?

Alakazam: Your concern is unneeded. It will awaken soon enough.
It has lost control only because it was enraged from having its sleep disturbed.
y'know I don't know about you guys but I don't tend to go on insane out-of-control rampages from being woken up. I think Groudon has some anger issues.

Alakazam: It should calm down.
Then an earthquake happens. That's bad timing, we're underground!

Green: Waah... Another quake!
Alakazam: Out! Quickly!
The five of us leave.

And returned to Pokémon Square together with Alakazam's team.
And in the square...
I accidentally overwrote this screenshot, it was Lombre saying something like "I wonder where Red's team is?"
Blastoise, Octillery, and Golem are there. Why? I thought they went to give it another shot too? ... Liars.

Caterpie: Look! Here they come!
Octillery: It's true, darlings!
Lombre: Let's go!
Hail the conquering heroes!

Golem: You really took down that Groudon?!
Wait, how do you all know already?

Octillery: Darlings, it's fantastic! You have won me over!
Green: Whoa! W-wait a second!
How does everyone know about what happened underground?
Glad to see I'm not the only one with concerns.

Caterpie: Pelipper spread the word with an extra edition of the Pokémon News.
... That doesn't answer my question. How did Pelipper know?!

Shiftry: You bunch became stronger than I expected!
Golem: You can be proud of it!
Blastoise: You lot did great! Why don't we team up sometime? Gahahahaha!
I'm totally down!
(Too bad it never happens.)

Alakazam: You've earned everyone's respect now.
Your Team Wildfire is a first-class rescue team.
Awesome!

Take pride in that. Green, Red.
Why our our names a separate sentence?

Green: Sniff... Sniffle... Red! This is great!
Every bit of our effort... It was all worthwhile!
And that's the best feeling, for sure.

Blastoise: Would you look at that? I didn't think someone that could take down Groudon'd be such a crybaby! Gahahahaha!
shut up blastoise crying is manly

Everyone celebrates... and then the screen flashes ominously.

Lombre: Huh? What was that?
I thought I heard something just for a moment... Did I just imagine it?
You can't imagine anything in this universe. It's all real.

The screen flashes again.

Caterpie: No. I heard it too.
Octillery: Me too. Even now, I hear it...
Golem: Someone talking? ... Not sure.
The screen flashes a third time.

Green: Th-this voice... I've heard it before.
This voice... I'm sure... That's it! It's Xatu!
Wait, what?

Alakazam: Xatu? Ah, that's it! Telepathy!
Xatu is calling to us using telepathy!
Oh, gotcha.
... But why?

The screen flashes a fourth time.

Music: World Calamity (An excellent and mood-setting track, a shame it only plays here iirc.)

Terrible, it is... From the sky... Falls a star.
Wait... what?!

... It is huge... A giant of a star!
The star, it falls. It falls straight to us.
... well shit, guess that's the end of this universe.

WELL THEN.

Xatu: Disasters in nature... There were many...
The balance of the world, it has been upset...
All because of the star. The star that slowly comes closer.
... a meteor... is the reason for the natural disasters...?
I don't know much about this kinda thing but that seems intensely wrong.

Xatu: ... If it keeps coming... It will crash into this world. It shall be terrible.
Well... that sucks.

Something must be done...
Okay, like what? It's kind of. A giant meteor. Coming to hit us. What can we possibly do?

Can the falling star be stopped?
How would Xatu kno-

Xatu: .................. There is a way.
oh

... To prevent collision, there is but one solution.
You must ask Rayquaza.
Oh, that's eas-wait WHAT

Blastoise: Rayquaza? What might that be?
Xatu: A Pokémon, living far above us in the sky. Legendary, it is.
Rayquaza must be asked to destroy the star from the sky.
Uh, I think the fragments would still hit the earth, which would... also suck.

However... Far, far up in the sky lives Rayquaza. Known by few and seen by none.
so... how are we expected to find it, exactly?

Alakazam: The sky... How are we to go there?
Fly there!

Xatu: Alakazam and I amplify our Teleport together...
And send Pokémon to the sky.
but
but
what are we going to stand on

However... The sky is a world above the clouds.
... Yes?

What will become of the Pokémon sent to the sky? Even I can guess nothing...
I don't really care tho the sky is rad

Green: Then, we'll do it! We'll go!
HELL YEAH

Alakazam: I also... I thought there could be none but you...
... speak English, please

But... Are you sure? There's no telling what you would find in that world above the clouds.
Do we have a choice?

Green: We expect danger!
It's my wish that all Pokémon can live in peace.
Xatu: Green, Red. Do you hear? This is Xatu.
Yeah we heard you before.

Discuss we will, Alakazam and I, about how our Teleport can be amplified.
Departure, it is tomorrow. Rest you should until then.
Last word. Dangerous will be your adventure... But fail, you must not. Surpass yourselves.
Don't worry, we're totally capable.

Green: No problem! We'll be fine!
Right, Red? Let's get it done!
Following this, we have the chance to prep for the journey. The World Calamity music plays the whole time, adding to the seriousness of the situation.

Upon talking to Green after prepping...

We leave tomorrow.
So let's get plenty of rest for tomorrow.
Tomorrow! Let's give it everything we can, Red!
Yes, let's!

And... I'm going to cut here. It's a cliff hanger of sorts. Next time, we head to the sky to save the world!

I never understood why Tyranitar and Charizard teleport forward. You already saw them back a floor...

Am I the only person who actually likes Gengar?

Carrier: For the sake of an engaging narrative I guess! It's better if you know they're alive. Or something.
I don't hate Gengar; I just think he (as a villain character) has more than overstayed his welcome by the time we get to the scene in Pokémon Square. He's better in small doses.

Before we go to the sky, we get some dream plot.

Red: ......
............
... Urgggh... I feel horrible...

Well. That's not normal.

... But why...? Why do I feel this terrible...?
It's called either a nightmare or being sick. Not super uncommon.

This is... The first time...

That explains it. Can we not break and enter into my home to murder my sleep kthxbai

But who would've thought you were also human before... Didn't expect that.
You've known this for weeks now Gengar, it's not new information.
Also... "also"?

But who cares? Someone like that's sure to be some lowlife. Kekeh!
Oh shut up.

I'll expose you yet!
For what?!

I'll expose what's in your heart with Dream Eater! Kekeke!
Hm?! Something's coming!

Yes, yes it is.

What? What is that light? It's coming closer?
Questions?

The light approaches Red and Gengar runs off.

Red: .....................
...... The pain.......
...... It's going away..................

it is time for truth

Who or what I am...?
Gardevoir: Yes. The time has arrived.
Why you have come here?
More talking in questions?

I will tell you all there is to tell.
Red, you have...

Well yeah. I'm a video game protagonist, that was a given.

Red: ............ Came to save the world of Pokémon? I did...?
Pfff I think you're gonna be doing the whole world a service by preventing this meteor from destroying the earth. It isn't just the world of Pokémon.

Gardevoir: Yes. We learned that this world faced extinction.
And so we sought a hero.
Who is "we" anyway?

But though we searched, nowhere could we find our hero. We were becoming discouraged.
There had to be someone somewhere man

When we came across a human.
how, anyway

Red... You were that human.
... I figured as much.

Red: Wa... Wait a second! Hero? Me? That's too much!
buddy u already saved like 6 people it's not that much of a stretch

I'm not anything special like that?!
Question marks?!

Gardevoir: Yes. That is also what you said the first time we met.
lmao ok so why did you pick me

You said you were not strong.
But what we sought was not power merely for display...
We sought true courage.
well I'm a Charmander so it works

Red: True courage...? That... I'm even less confident about that.
Gardevoir: That, too, is what you said when we met.
and i repeat
why did you pick me

It was then that you said this.
To see if you were worthy to be our hero or not...
You asked that we put you to the test.
I don't know that putting me "to the test" was the best of ideas when the fate of the world is at stake

And only if you were found to be truly worthy...
Then you were to be told the truth.
Well I guess that means I'm truly worthy. Yay me!

To fulfill your role clear of heart and mind, you then chose to erase your memory as a human...
And became a Pokémon of your own will to fight alongside your friends.
My friends? I knew Green before?? Who is this referring to????

That is how you came to be in this world.
Red: I... I did that?
yeah bruh

Gardevoir: Your courage has been proven.

Well... that's not pressuring at all.

And that role... It is soon coming to its end.
Red: ... Stopping the meteor from crashing into this world...? That's my role?
Yeah, you have to get into a human cannon and fly into the meteor to explode it. That's all. No big deal right?

Gardevoir: Yes. And when that is accomplished...
You can return to your human world.
"can"? But what if I don't want to! I have so many friends to make!

Red: Oh... So I can go back to being a human...
Wait! But that means...

:( :( :( :(

Red: Green...... I have to leave?
Gardevoir: Green feels great kinship with you, Red.
there's a lot of shipping of starter/partner so yeah

Gardevoir: So, Red, if you were to leave...
Your friend would be heartbroken.
Then I just won't leave, no big deal

... But there can be nothing done.
bullshit

Because there are encounters, there are also farewells...
NOT IN LOVE

(ok sometimes in love)

... I, too, once had a friend beyond value.
Truly, I cherished our friendship...
i feel like this is a low key attempt to guilt trip

But my friend has gone away.
well damn

It fills me with sadness still, losing my friend...
...... But... We will meet again... That is what I believe.
can't tell if naivete or psychic type foresight

The screen flashes.

Red: ...! W-what was that?!
Gardevoir: ............... Who was it? Someone appears to have been looking into your dream.
Wow that's. Okay. Glad Red knows she's just been intruded on while sleeping. Eugh.

But it is fine now. Whoever it was ran off.
... All that remains in this dream is a feeling of sadness.
can we not have that? Just a thought

... That Pokémon... I think ran off crying...
:(

............... It will be morning soon. Au revoir.
aw okay bye

It is time.

Eh. Mostly?

Green: This is it! Let's go, Red! We're off to the sky!
ok but how

No seriously how

... this doesn't look like the sky to me

Alakazam: Ah, good of you to come.
Yeah we kinda had to.

Xatu: Kwaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Green: Wh-what's going on? What is Xatu doing?
Alakazam: It is almost ready. The Teleport Gem...
So, psychic shenanigans. Gotcha

Green: Teleport Gem?
Xatu: Kwaaaaaaaaah!

Well that's... a gem? It just looks like a little green energy thing.

Xatu: ............ It is made.
This... This is the Teleport Gem.
This will deliver you to the world of the sky.
And I repeat: what are we going to stand on?

Now, Red. Accept!
... forceful much?

Red's team received the Teleport Gem.
Xatu: That was made using the powers of psychics.
... Yes, we know.

By me, Alakazam, and... Oh?
A Ghost-type Pokémon. We received help from it.
Well I wonder who that could possibly be!

... Gone away, it seems.
Green: Who could it be?
I wonder!

Alakazam: Hahaha! It must be bashful. Let it be.
... did you not, like, see it with your eyes?

Now... I must ask you this one last time.
This journey will be fraught with considerable danger. Will you still go?
lol what if we could just say nope and leave that'd be pretty good

Green: Of course we will!
We have to get Rayquaza to destroy that falling star, right?
If that will bring peace, I'll gladly give my life for it!
:')

That's my wish.
Red: (... Yes... And when that wish comes true...)
(Gardevoir said...)
Yes she said I can/will return to the human world. I know, I remember.

Red: (............)
(This will be my last adventure... With Green...)
that will be sad :( i had so many more friends to make!

Green: Red! Let's get this done!
Alakazam: We're counting on you! Green! Red!

Great timing of that screenshot. But yeah we're teleporting.

Apparently the clouds are solid. I'm not complaining I guess (I love cloud levels in games) but this still isn't how clouds work

Green: Wah! Red, this is cool! We're on clouds!
i am jealous

Oh, wow!
Red, look up there!

That doesn't look plausible at all but okay

It's at the top of this tower...
That's where Rayquaza is...
Red! Let's do our best on the climb!
And we head in.

Sky Tower music (Hands down the best dungeon track in the game. Give it a listen!)

Recruitables: Shuppet, Lunatone, Duskull, Koffing, Solrock, Aerodactyl, Tropius. Recruitables this time: Shuppet, Lunatone, Duskull, Solrock, Tropius.

this was on floor 1 lmao. Named Mane.

Also I forgot to mention earlier: The Mt. Moonview Friend Area (which I got from a mission before) can hold Solrock, Lunatone, the Cleffa family, and Jirachi. Which is why we're able to pick up Mane here!

In this game, Shedinja have 5 HP, but take no damage from attacks they're immune to through Wonder Guard and only 1 damage through regular attacks. Fixed-damage attacks (and items) will kill them, though.

Awesome. Named Teru.

... And then I died on literally the last floor. Wow. Amazing. I'm so glad that happened. Time to try it again and see if I can recruit anything else this time =\

Well, this happens appreciably quickly. Named Teru again.

Named Mane again.

We made it after 25 floors and didn't die this time. Let's continue!

Sky Tower Summit (Not quite as good as Sky Tower proper but close, and very similar thematically.)

So, take a look at the top screen. That's what the layout for a lot of Sky Tower Summit's floors are like. It's exactly as annoying as it looks and is a reason why this part of the dungeon is pretty difficult if you're underleveled (which I am most of the time, not this time though).

Or the layout looks like this, which requires you to run into enemy Pokémon even if you don't want to. And the enemies are annoying: Aerodactyl has Pressure and Salamence has Intimidate. The other possible encounters are Metagross, Tropius, Flygon, and Claydol. Not fun!

On the ninth floor, we arrive at the top of the cloud tower. Somehow.

Well that was quick.
Also there were a bunch of Pokémon (including two Ground types?) living on your tower, how do you know we're trespassers?

Green: That voice... Could it be Rayquaza?
Who else is here?

Rayquaza: Indeed I am. The sky is my domain.
Depart at once!
We kinda need you to save the world though bud

Green: But... We don't have the time to argue.
We came here because we need your help...
Don't try to explain it, Green. Just yell "DESTROY THE METEOR AND WE'LL LEAVE" at the top of your lungs.

Rayquaza: Never!
Gyaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Well yeah but

To each, there is a world destined as their own!
Well yeah but

For hundreds of millions of years, never once have I descended to the ground!
THAT is a LONG-ASS TIME

And the opposite shall also hold true!
Well we got here didn't we??

Let there be no mercy for those that defy the laws of nature!
FINE we can FIGHT

Prepare for the end!
IT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN IF YOU DON'T DESTROY THE METEOR!!!!

Rayquaza battle music (An amazing battle theme befitting the final boss.)

Okay, first things first, let's get some strategy going here.
I set Green to use Agility as I have Red use Flamethrower.

Rayquaza approaches. I keep Green on Agility, have Red use Smokescreen, and Mane use Hypnosis. Rayquaza is now unable to hit me and also sleeping, and we're at +3 speed.
I set Green to use Bullet Seed and Mane to use Rock Throw, as Red uses another Flamethrower. Rayquaza doesn't wake up before a few turns of this kills it. Pretty easy.

After the battle, Rayquaza collapses. However, it immediately takes an aggressive stance again <spoiler>like every other boss in this game except Groudon</spoiler> and appears to be about to attack... but is then interrupted as the ground begins to shake.

We're on top of clouds...
Yeah this is extremely questionable I have to admit

Rayquaza: These are shock waves! And they're huge!
Green: That's it! I got it! Look straight up, Rayquaza!

WELP
IT IS HERE

Rayquaza: What is that?!
Green: It's a shooting star! And it's enormous!
It will destroy the world if it continues on its path!
So clearly, we have to take the meteor and push it somewhere else!

That's why we came, Rayquaza. Please, destroy the falling star!
Rayquaza: ... So, that is why...
Yes now please just do it

Green: Yes! Please hurry and destroy it!
Green gets me.

Rayquaza: ............... Before I try... I need to know your resolve.
The star has come too close.
If I were to loose my Hyper Beam here...
You would not escape unscathed!
YOU LITERALLY JUST TRIED TO MURDER US why do you suddenly care if we die
JUST DO IT!

Green: So?! We accepted that from the start!
Yeah especially when we almost got killed by Rayquaza.
I don't know if Mane and Teru consent to this though. Guys are you okay if -

Rayquaza: Well said!

Oh well I guess they don't have time to consent

Green: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
And then the screen fades to white. A clif hunger!1 (... okay I apologize for that reference, if in fact anyone gets it)

wat

...............
..............................
... Is this... a dream...?
........................
No... This is no dream...
Yes... The star's explosion swallowed me...
That's a rather kid-friendly choice of words

And I'm now adrift... as a spirit...
red is dead, long live red

...............
What's going to happen...?

Oh hi Mark Gengar

Red: (............)
(... This shadow... Gengar...)
... "shadow"?

Gengar: Keke! Red! Didn't take much to put you down! Serves you right!
buddy we just SAVED THE WORLD can you not

Kekeke! Now, what to do with you?
I know!
I'll drag you into the dark world. That'll do it.
I love how generic "dark world" is, they couldn't come up with anything more interesting. Like whatever that hellscape from Super Mystery Dungeon was called, you all know the one I'm talking about if you played that

It's hard to tell but Gengar is dragging Red off here.

(Gengar is dragging me...)
(... Gengar said...)
(He would drag me into the dark world...)
(What is the dark world...?)
What does it matter, you're dead anyway

(Am I going to be abandoned in a world I don't know?)
YOU'RE DEAD ANYWAY

Gengar: ......
............
.................. Hunh?
Darn it... I took the wrong path...
u were walking in a straight line

Red: (...... What?)
Gengar: This isn't like me... I can't tell which way is which...
It's a bunch of bizarre cloud-space-King's-Cross-station anyway, I'm not surprised

Keh! To heck with this. I'll just ditch you here...
how convenient

That's it. Good-bye to you.
good-bay to you too!

Gengar leaves, the screen fades to white.

Voice: ......... Hey.
... Hey, can you hear...
Alakazam: Snap out of it!

Hey! We're alive! Well. I am at least. I think.

Green is too I guess.

Alakazam: ... Regained consciousness!
Everyone: Ooooooooohhhhh!
lmao ok who thinks they were taking bets

Red is alive too.

(I'm sure... Back there... Gengar saved me...)
A twist!!

Green: ... Maybe... Did Gengar save Red too!
ok tbh this would probably have worked better if the partner didn't confirm he had the same experience as I did, we could have ~speculated~ otherwise

Everyone crowds around.

Lombre: Awesome, you're alive! You really had all of us worried!
Octillery: You were incredible!
Caterpie: Snivel... I'm so glad you're safe! It's fantastic!
Green: Everyone... Thank you. But...
What about the star?! What happened to it?!
Well Green we're not dead so uh I think it's safe to say it's gone?

Xatu: Kwaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Excellent.

Though it will not be right away... The disasters shall soon be calmed.
Green: What about our team members? Where are Mane and Teru?!
oh my god
look at that
the game acknowledged our friends :')

Xatu: Be calm. Both are unharmed.
Fun fact: If you have only one friend, Xatu says "[name] is unharmed". They really did go out of their way for this scene and I appreciate it!!!

Green: Really!
We did it, Red! Everything worked!
We've won peace!
Ehhhh I don't know if "preventing environmental disasters" is, strictly speaking, the key to peace, but whatever

Then we get a couple of pan shots of Pokémon Square showing everyone (that is there and not here) happy and healthy.

Snubbull: Yippee! This is the greatest!
Charizard: This calls for a celebration!
Blastoise: Let me shoot my Hydro Pump to kick if off!
Lombre: Whoa, hold on there! Don't you point those things at me! Face the other way! The other way!
Shiftry: No, no! Let it loose! Hahaha!
making fun of Lombre's phobias isn't cool you guyyyyyys :(

Lombre: Y-you've gotta be kidding me!
He starts to back up, but Octillery intercepts him...

W O W ok thats not mean at all

Charizard: Oh? Not bad!

lombre is being ganged up on too, rip lombre

Everyone: Ahahahahaha!
Voice: Red...

oh
right
:(

Music: Farewell (A very emotional and bittersweet track reusing some of the game's earlier motifs to really set the mood.)

Gardevoir: We owe everything to you, Red, and your friends.
(Glad my friends get a mention here, even though I don't think Gardevoir means our recruited friends)

Peace has returned to our world.
Thank you for everything.
And now... Red, your role here has ended.
Soon, you must return to your own world.
but... but... I don't wanna :(

It is time to bid farewell.
:(

Red: (It's finally come... The time has finally arrived...)

Hard to tell here but Red has begun emanating little light-dots.

Gardevoir: Red... I am so sorry for this... To everyone... Please bid farewell...
Gardevoir disappears...

... and Caterpie notices what's up.

Green: ...! Red...! Your body... What's happening to you?

(This is the first and only time the hero speaks, aloud, to someone that isn't Gardevoir.)

And, everyone... I'm sorry. But I have to leave.
Snubbull: What?!
Bellsprout: Wh-what are you saying?!
Red: Everyone... Thank you for everything all this time.
Green: ... Huh?
... Leave...? What do you mean, leave?
:( :( :( :( :( I am sad

Red: My role as a Pokémon has ended.
I have to return to the human world.
Alakazam: Unbelievable!
Tyranitar: Go back... to the human world?!
Green: Huh? W-why...? Why?!
I don't understand! Why do you have to leave?!
oh green, pure sweet naive green
i don't want to any more than you

Didn't we... Aren't we friends...
i wish that were enough :(

(Red is starting to glow more.)

I will never forget you.
Green approaches Red.

Green: Don't go, Red......

Green: I... What am I going to do when you're gone, Red?
Make all the friends in the world!
I'm so very sorry. This is good-bye...

Charizard: Red!
Bellspout: Red!
Caterpie: Red...

And Red's spirit lifts off the screen.

Green: Red!!! Nooooo!!!
i'm sorry :(

Charizard: Why? Why was it necessary to leave us...?
Shiftry: Red saved my life...
But I hadn't done anything to show my thanks...
Left... Before I could even say thanks...
Lombre: You're right...
Just upped and went like that...
Why now? Why when the world's been saved?
That's exactly why, that's the thing

Just when things were going to get better... Sob...
Xatu: This was coming... Our world, it was saved by Red.
I look back now... When bound for the sky, Red seemed...
As if resigned. Resigned to accept what was to come.
Green: ............ I think I know...
Red must have...
Red must have become a Pokémon to save us.
And when... When the star was destroyed...
Red knew that would be the time to leave...
Why... Why didn't Red tell me earlier...?
If this was coming... Why didn't Red tell me?
green listen you wouldn't have fought as hard as you did if you knew I would be gone as a result. It was for the good of the world

Alakazam: Those words couldn't be spoken.
As much as you are heartbroken now...
Red must have felt the same pain of leaving.
Try to understand, Green.
Yeah that too.

Green: Sob... Red...
Elsewhere:

(What is this...?)
(I'm rising into the sky...)
(Is this my spirit...?)
(I wonder where I'm going?)
(......!)
(Voices... I hear voices...)
Music: Staff Roll (Has a steady build-up into the "real" credits theme, so be sure to listen through. The credits music itself incorporates the "rescue" motifs we've heard occasionally throughout the game.

A true friend... A friend for life...
You finally realize it now...
If you wish... And wish very strongly...
Perhaps you will meet again.
I hope so.

The screen fades, and we get our staff credits.
If you'd like to watch the staff credits in context: check out 9:30 of this video. The same video also includes the fight with Rayquaza and the whole ending sequence, so if you want to see that in its original glory without being reduced to screenshots and quotes, check it out.

After the end credits...

Music: Time of Reunion

What's this?

I want to stay longer...
With my invaluable...
Irreplaceable friend...
sounds like love to me

The screen fades to white...

We cut to this.

:')

(For this scene in its full glory, check out 12:00 of the above video with the credits.)

End, but...

The story of Red and Green ends here.
But Wildfire isn't done yet! There are many rescues to be done!
A new adventure begins!
The legendary Pokémon are set to make their appearance!
Eh, we already saw like five of them...

Don't go away!
I won't! ... but I am done for this update.

With this, we've officially finished the main part of the game. The game opens up a bit from here; while there is a sort of post-game plot, we're free to take it at our leisure.
The post-game also contains a pretty substantial difficulty spike which makes our life a bit harder if we try to attempt it right now. (It doesn't help that I'm usually underleveled for it, though not this time.) So, usually, what I like to do is try to take missions in order to 1) grind 2) stock up on items 3) recruit friends and 4) build up my rescue rank, until the point at which I have enough money to purchase all the post-game friend areas. Only after that will I start the post-game proper.

Since I'm about six levels higher than I normally am, and am therefore not (so) underleveled, I might start the postgame before picking up all the Friend Areas just so that it doesn't become super easy for me. However, I am going to start getting at least some Friend Areas and doing some recruiting as well.

As a result, the next update is probably going to be a montage update consisting of me showing off the beginning of the postgame and then new Friend Areas and new recruits. Accordingly, it might take some time before I'm back with an update, at least a week and probably more than that. So if there's a long time between now and the next update, don't be alarmed: I am still working on this, it's just going to be a while before the new update.

Since the next update will be based around me getting my hands on new Friend Areas, that means I'm also looking for new nickname options for friends. Below are four spoilers containing: names already suggested; the Pokémon I've already recruited; and two with the Pokémon that I'll likely be recruiting during the montage update (so you know what to offer nicknames for) and the upcoming post-game dungeons' options.

Teddiursa - Ursa Minor

Comment!

You can actually bring recruits to Sky Tower too. It's nice to see your favorite followers have a place in the main story.

I have no idea what that place was called either, so I'll call it Stoneworld for now.

Prepare for a barrage of bad nicknames.

Wingull and Pelipper - Type Gull, DrizzlePlz
Tentacool and Tentacruel - Stinger, Red-eye
Shellder and Cloyster - Pearl, The Mystery
Omanyte and Omastar - WillBeg4, ShellSmash
Seel and Dewgong - Aurora, Mali
Anorith and Armaldo - Small Fry, B Rank.
Slowpoke, Slowbro, and Slowking - Speedy, Trip, Hatty
Spheal, Sealeo, and Walrein - Clubber (I never really thought this was a good nickname but might get a laugh. Also rhymed with blubber.) Tubber, Blubber
Grimer and Muk - ThatoneGuy, BillyMays (cleaning commercials,
Carvanha and Sharpedo - Jaws, Ari
Kyogre - Aquarius, keep Kyogre?
Wynaut and Wobbuffet - Because, Wobburrito
Girafarig - Two-face
Beldum, Metang, and Metagross - I3, I5, I7
Drowzee and Hypno - Sleeper, Cosby
Natu and Xatu - Seer, Swensen
Spoink and Grumpig - Spring, PK Bacon
Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam - Spoonless, Kinesis LOL, Gold Rank LOL
Medicham - Marise
Mr. Mime - Ted
Mudkip, Marshtomp, and Swampert - Muddy, Mallow, Skipper
Lotad, Lombre, and Ludicolo - Lily, NotTHELombre, Ariba!
Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath, and Politoed - Isthatanose, WaterHypno, FuriousFrog, KillerTunes
Goldeen and Seaking - Arches, Fortune
Barboach and Whiscash - Cashier, Grandpa
Wooper and Quagsire - Plant Food, Huh? (Unaware joke)
Surskit and Masquerain - Skitter, Demon
Totodile, Croconaw, and Feraligatr - Chomper, Cruncher, Gator
Corphish and Crawdaunt - Hey, Hey - Crabhammerer
Magikarp and Gyarados - Terror, Raseri
Squirtle, Wartortle, and Blastoise - Blue, Survivor, JigglyStuck (that one episode of Old Pokemon where Jigglypuff is stuck in Blastoise's cannon)
Feebas and Milotic - Magikarp 1.0.1, Sera
Bagon, Shelgon, and Salamence - Defiance, Perseverance, Blue
Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite - Ray, Celia, Big Ray
Oddish, Gloom, Vileplume, and Bellossom - Natura, Toadstool, Toxia, Dancer

Don't feel forced to use these at all; I did this mainly as a challenge to assign nicknames to every single pokemon listed. Maybe you'll find a couple you like though

And so ends the most heroic tale of telling someone to look up.

So as I understand, there's a degree of non-linearity to the post game dungeons in terms of those with cutscene introductions. Do you have a specific order you like to tackle them in?

Also, do you plan to stick with the main game duo for post-game stuff, or will we see some leader swapping for certain levels, like leaving Red behind for the Ocean dungeons?

There's one thing I always like to do: pick up the Friend Bow (which adds a bonus to recruitment possibilities, and is found only after going through 3 other dungeons that must be taken in a specific order) before taking on the Buried Relic. Buried Relic is the only place to find Mew, but Mew is a random encounter rather than a boss fight, so I want my recruitment bonuses to be fairly high before attempting the dungeon. Other than that, it's basically in the order that things unlock, which can be variable between my playthroughs because a lot of postgame dungeons are unlocked by obtaining specific postgame Friend Areas.

Also, do you plan to stick with the main game duo for post-game stuff, or will we see some leader swapping for certain levels, like leaving Red behind for the Ocean dungeons?
I'm pretty anal about keeping my starter and partner in the same level range, so I'll probably be sticking with both of them, though I'll swap the leader in unfavorable dungeons, like the postgame's myriad Water-type dungeons. On trips specifically devoted to recruitment, I'll leave someone behind, though.
No one else is really at a good enough level to see use as a leader, and plus Red and Green have been pumped full of Gummis and therefore have much better IQ skills for taking on postgame dungeons, so we'll probably be seeing mostly them.

Carrier: Yeah, I usually bring Absol to Sky Tower with me, which is fun. I kind of missed that in MD2.
Stoneworld is accurate lmao
this whole game is getting Rayquaza to look up isn't it lmao
smogon account: hi lol
and yes actually that was probably a reference to MD1. There's a lot of theories floating around about whether Zinnia might be related to the plot of MD1 somehow and a fair bit of evidence to support them.

the falling star was destroyed...
and peace returned to the world of Pokémon.
But that did not put an end to the natural calamities.
... um... wasn't that the point? What do you mean it didn't put an end to them??

Natural disasters still occurred, but much less often.
... yes...? Yeah that's kind of why they are "natural" disasters

Needless to say, Wildfire's rescue activities
continued as if nothing had changed.
How convenient!

Several mornings later...
Red awakes in her base, still a Pokémon, and Green comes in to visit.

Good morning, Red! Did you just wake up?
I went by the Pelipper Post Office earlier.
The Bulletin Board was still covered with rescue jobs.
Even though it's peaceful again, many Pokémon still need our help.
Well, there's no cure for stupidity.

Red! Let's keep on doing our best as always!
sounds good!

are you here to finally join my team

Caterpie: It's Snubbull! There's something weird going on!
guess not

Green: Snubbull is weird...? Weird, how?
Metapod: He looks completely different...
Green: Red! Let's go to the square!

is that -
...
oh
got it
they don't realize Snubbull evolved

Hi, Alakazam. Have you seen Snubbull?
I heard something strange happened to him.
hes right there

Granbull: I'm Snubbull.
Green: Whaaaat?! You're Snubbull?
But you don't look anything like the way you did before!
stop Green that's offensive!!

Granbull: I don't really understand, either.
I went into the cave there, and all of a sudden...
Green: What cave?
stop interrupting!!!
but yeah what cave

Whiscash: It appeared without me noticing.
... how

See? Right there.

oh
that sure is a cave

Green: So you went in there...
Granbull: Yup. And I came out looking like this...
Alakazam: Snubbull underwent "evolution." He evolved.
oh god are we really going to have to explain this
are there really any players who don't understand the concept of evolution as it applies to Pokémon

Green: Evolution? Evolved? I don't follow.
oH MY GOD

Alakazam: Pokémon, upon satisfying certain conditions, may evolve.
When a Pokémon undergoes evolution, its appearance changes.
Amazing !!!!

Green: Oh, wow! Your own appearance... That can change?!
BUDDY HOW DO YOU THINK DIGLETT AND DUGTRIO ARE RELATED HUH? OR CATERPIE AND METAPOD AND BUTTERFREE

Alakazam: I suspect that cave is where evolution can take place.
"suspect"

This is merely a guess...
Perhaps evolution could not take place before because the world's balance was askew.
However, now that the star has been destroyed... The world's balance has been restored...
And perhaps that cave become unsealed.
that makes NO SENSE but okay

Caterpie: So if I evolved, I would become like Metapod?!
Metapod: I wish... I want to be Butterfree quickly...
oh you poor sweet children. your dreams are for naught though

Granbull: W-wait a second. I don't know if I like this or not..
yeah he didn't really consent to it

My cute little face turned all craggy...
thats
thats quite the bizarre statement to make but ok

Alakazam: Evolution is not a bad thing.
Appearance isn't the only thing that changes through evolution.
One's power and abilities may be enhanced, for example.
"may", "for example" - WHAT ELSE IS THERE

Granbull: Oh! Really?! I... I might be stronger?!
lol not "might"

Metapod: That makes me want to evolve even more!
Yeah you in particular absolutely should.

I wish I could be Butterfree soon...
Caterpie: M-me too!
Green: Can we evolve if we go to the cave?
Alakazam: Yes. But it would depend on the conditions.
Green: Red. Let's go to the cave if we're ready to evolve.
I'm not!!
Okay, I probably will evolve Red and Green, but I want to finish the postgame plot (just the plot, not the entire postgame first for Reasons.

I can't evolve them anyway since there's apparently only room for one being in there and the concept of waiting is foreign to Green.

When I attempt to go to a dungeon this happens.
There's something I wanted to talk over with you before we go to a dungeon.
You know how we always go to dungeons together, Red?
... yes?

But I think we'll be seeing all sorts of different dungeons from now on...
Yeah but

I think some of them will be tough even for us.
Yeah but

So, I have an idea.
Instead of us running things all the time, we should let the team as a whole do it.
I mean that's a pretty good idea but

How about we change things so we can pick the leader and members to go into dungeons?
That might mean we won't be going on rescues to certain dungeons...
But that will let us handle rescues better by having more Pokémon types available.
you know you really don't need to explain this quite so thoroughly

Do you like the idea? Red, do you think it'd be good to be able to freely choose leaders?
No, but even though this is an actual dialogue option, I don't have a choice

Yup, that's right! I thought you'd agree, Red!
OK! New rule! We can now freely pick the Pokémon that are going into dungeons!
I think this is how we should pick the leader of a team going into a dungeon.
In its Friend Area, face the team member you want as the leader, then select Make Leader on the menu.
EXPOSITION
STAHP

That will make the Pokémon the team leader. We should do that before every dungeon.
One more thing.
We should make it so a team leader can go into a dungeon alone if it wants.
Anyway... To choose the leader of a dungeon-bound team... In a Friend Area, use... Make Leader.
YES
I GET IT

We should always choose the team leader in its Friend Area before sending the team to any dungeon.
I UNDERSTAND

okay
this is a sad part because now Green will go to his friend area, never again to wander the overworld with me. It's sad :(((((( everyone hates this part of the game, for good reason, including me and it's why i rarely ever do postgame.

Not this time though!

After that day's mission:

no, this is the last time i'll see this message from you :( :( :( :(

wahh no Green :(

In order to add him to my team I need to manually visit him in his Friend Area and add him. This will get annoying as I make more friends because of his high National Pokédex number (comparatively - remember this is gen 3 time) so bleh

All right, montage time!

Things that happen:

This amazing piece of news!

THIS amazing piece of news!

A mission that gets me the Boulder Cave (Onix and Diglett families)!

An extremely broken IQ skill!
This is an IQ skill that lets you go over any dungeon terrain, including water, lava, and air (found in Sky Tower and a few postgame dungeons). It's broken as hell and I'm gonna need it for some collection in postgame so I'm glad this happened!

The other Friend Ar- wait is that an escort mission?
Tch. Fine, I'll bite the bullet and do this escort mission. It will be the only one though.

lets just get one thing straight i am not doing this because i care u got that

But it goes off without a hitch and I get Dragon Cave, which hosts the Bagon line and nothing else.

Wildfire goes up a rank!

I go to recruit Zapdos!
Since we have last met, how much more have you furthered your team?
How much stronger?
Your power... Demonstrate it for me!
Zapdos didn't join the team, though, forcing a reset.

The fourth attempt works though. I decide not to give it a nickname.
Recruiting Zapdos (or either of the other legendary birds) automatically adds the friend area Legendary Island, which houses just the birds.

I also get Moltres!
This is Mt. Blaze!
For you to venture to its peak, there can be but one reason!
You've come to challenge me!
So be it! I am the warrior of fire, Moltres!
Have you what it takes to defeat me when I am holding back nothing?
Show me!

Second try.

And Articuno!
You mean to challenge me!
I am Articuno! The warder of ice!
Those that enter the forest... I shall destroy with all my might!
No matter who it may be!

Fourth try (I didn't recruit a Rhyhorn this time around, though, hence the difference between this and the last screenshot).

I promised I'd show off every Friend Area once it is completely full. Here is Legendary Island.

At level 40, we now have a 7.5% flat boost to recruitment rates. Hooray!

Friend Areas obtained:
Mystic Lake: Lapras, Dratini family
Energetic Forest: Pichu, Meowth, Mankey, Snorlax, Aipon, Stantler, Slakoth, Skitty families
Scorched Plains: Growlithe, Ponyta, Cyndaquil, Torchic families
Ice Floe Beach: Seel and Spheal families
Southern Island: Latios and Latias
Treasure Sea: Horsea, Remoraid, Carvanha, Anorith, Luvdisc families
Shallow Beach: Krabby, Wingull, Corsola families
Waterfall Lake: Magikarp and Feebas families
Turtleshell Pond: Squirtle, Psyduck, Azurill, Corphish families
Aged Chamber O?: Unown forms O through ?
Frigid Cavern: Smoochum, Swinub, Delibird, Snorunt families
Furnace Desert: Sandshrew, Trapinch, Cacnea families
Final Island: Mew
Poison Swamp: Koffing, Grimer, and Gulpin families
Ancient Relic: Regirock, Registeel, Regice, Baltoy, Aerodactyl families
Crater: Slugma, Magby, Torkoal, Numel families
Aged Chamber AN: Unown forms A through N
Deep-Sea Floor: Omanyte, Kabuto, Chinchou, Lileep, Clamperl, Relicanth families
Secretive Forest: Venonat, Spinarak, Pineco, Nincada families
Serene Sea: Qwilfish, Mantine, Wailmer families
Echo Cave: Zubat, Dunsparce, Whismur, Nosepass, Mawile, Wynaut families
Cryptic Cave: Mewtwo
Sacred Field: Raikou, Entei, Suicune
Rainbow Peak: Ho-oh
Bountiful Sea: Tentacool, Slowpoke, Shellder, Staryu families
That's all the Friend Areas that can be bought! The others will be automatically added upon recruiting their resident Legendary. That means the unaccounted Friend Areas are for Celebi, Lugia, Deoxys, Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza.

Recruitment montage!

Named Spring as per Carrier's suggestion.

Carrier's suggestion was PK Bacon (which I like) but I actually decided to go with a traditional nickname that I give to Grumpig, "Chex Mix". I have literally no idea where this comes from. It's just something I named a Spoink once a long time ago and I don't have the faintest idea why.

AMAZING, I HOPE MY NEWFOUND FRIENDS DON'T DIE
I just use a Petrify Orb to freeze them all and go around taking them out one by one.

it works ok

(That last one completely clears out Mt. Blaze, by the way.)

I also go ahead and evolve a few Pokémon that are ready for it too:

(forgot to cap the actual evolution for the last one)

So I just want to say for the record that in the postgame, a lot of plot happens at one time and overlaps itself. For the sake of presenting an LP that is not constantly jumping between ideas, for this postgame I'll occasionally move around my presentation plot events so that everything related is grouped together. So, say, if I witness a plot event that opens up A dungeon but I take some time going to dungeons B, C, and D before A, then I'll present the material such that dungeons B, C, and D are presented before both the plot event and dungeon A. Just saying this in case anyone who knows their Mystery Dungeon is confused as to why plot events don't seem to be happening when they are "supposed" to be.

This is how plot happens.

Oh, long time no see. You are well?
You see, I have heard about Lombre's tale. It is too funny.
I have heard that Lombre almost drowned at sea!
... well, no wonder he was so scared of Blastoise's cannons then.

But that Lombre -- he lives in water! How very pathetic! Pshehehehehe!
does Pokémon Square look like water to you

Let's go hear Lombre's side of things.

I wasn't drowning! Sheesh, they're making up stories about me!
Lombre said something like "do you want to hear the real story" but I accidentally overwrote the screenshot.
I say yes, of course, because I have to.

See, I went out to the sea to frolic a while back.
...to frolic??

You know? I was trying that Dive thing.
uh, okay

So, I was having fun going underwater...
And I got washed out to sea a bit.
All of a sudden, these wicked clouds rolled in...
And before I knew it, there was a full-blown storm raging!
Well shit

There's more! A dungeon appeared in the sea!
... ????????????

I was shocked witless! I got out of there fast!
But who'd've guessed it? A dungeon in a stormy sea!
please don't use who'd've kthx

Huh? You want to know more about that dungeon in the sea?
YEAH bruh

I vamoosed it out of there, so I can't tell you much...
I know! Maybe Whiscash would know something.
Why Whiscash specifically though

Yeah, that'd be best. Go talk to Whiscash.
ok sure

I, too, have heard of it.
Well if that don't beat all!

I have heard of a place that is far off our coast...
is that how far Lombre went?

It is a sea churned by torrential storms and violent waves.
It is a place appropriately named the Stormy Sea.
... COOL

There, one will find a dungeon that leads to the bottom of the sea.
ok but how do we breathe?

The sea is infinitely dark, and its depth unimaginable. That is what I have heard.
welp

Hohoho! You look eager to go.
However... To go beneath the sea, a Hidden Machine named Dive is needed.
EVEN IN MYSTERY DUNGEON I am not free from the necessity of HMs

Without Dive, you cannot go to the Stormy Sea.
Hohoho! Your face tells me you are desperate to go.
yes!

So be it. You may have this.
And he gives us Dive... cool thanks

I understand that it is a very rare item that was found in a place called the Solar Cave.
If you were to carry that Hidden Machine as an item...
Or if any team member wishing to enter the dungeon used that Hidden Machine to learn Dive...
You would be able to enter the Stormy Sea.
Yeah, fortunately I don't need a team member who knows the HM in order to go, just the HM itself.

Let's go!

Stormy Sea music
Stormy Sea is one of the few postgame dungeons to have its own unique music.

The dungeon is 40 floors without a rest point, making it by far the longest dungeon so far.
Recruits: Wingull, Tentacool, Shellder, Omanyte, Seel, Anorith, Slowpoke, Spheal, Grimer, Seadra (At a higher level), Tentacruel (Same), Sealeo (Same), Carvanha, Kyogre

Sure I guess.
I can only have one recruit if I wish to get Kyogre, and I guess this is it. Named Type Gull.

Also if you didn't notice I'm leading with Green because lol Fire-types in a Water dungeon

So many things want to join my team I feel bad saying no :( but I want Kyogre!!!

This dungeon is also rough on the Belly. I run out at floor 15. Good thing I stocked up on Huge Apples for this!

I'm pretty overleveled so it doesn't end up being very interesting. Fun for readers I'm sure!

Anyway, we're about to go fight Kyogre. In order to recruit Kyogre, we need a body size of 2 or less on our team, because the max body size allowed on a team is 6 and Kyogre has 4. I'm going to send Red away and take this fight with just Green and Type Gull.

Let's go!

well then

My infinite... power!
Gwwwwwoooooooh!

ok but why do you get to talk while Groudon doesn't?

All the time, I waited. Waited for my power to recover.
And now! I am on the verge of regaining my power!

Witness the destructive force of my waves!
Marvel at my awesome power!
lol how about no, I'm a Grass-type

LET'S GO

I start off by setting Type Gull to run away so he doesn't accidentally steal the kill for me, and then have Green use a handful of Agilities and move up to fight Kyogre.

I have Bullet Seed. You are going to die.
it dies in 3 Bullet Seed hits lmaooo this move is so broken

YES
Kyogre only has a 50% chance of joining (57.5% with my level 40 bonus) so this was not guaranteed. I'm glad it worked!
I don't give Kyogre a nickname.
It automatically comes with the Friend Area Seafloor Cave.

Oh. Hey.
Mystery ruin found underground!
Its site had been hidden by the crater of a meteor strike in ancient times.
The Buried Relic is thought to date back beyond recorded history.
Ooh, lore! Too bad this is basically not expanded on at all.

There are rumors of treasures...
And perhaps even Pokémon that lived in ancient times.
The Buried Relic is the main topic in Pokémon Square.
thanks for that note at the end, I'm glad for that

Everyone in the square actually is discussing Buried Relic though. Lombre tells me that Shiftry knows where the Buried Relic is, so I go to talk to him.

The Buried Relic is deep in the jungle to the southeast.
Are you dreaming about the treasures too?
Eh... you could say that.

Kukukuh... Me too! Best of luck, compadre!
I like Shiftry, he's a cool dude once the Jumpluff situation is over.

W O W excuse you

Red's team gained access to the Buried Relic!
That's all well and good, but I'm actually not going to be attempting Buried Relic for a long while. I have some other postgame plot to get out of the way first.

Also here is Kyogre in its Friend Area.

I'm going to take a sojourn to Wyvern Hill. Wyvern Hill is one of the non-plot postgame dungeons that opens up after the completion of the main story, once you get the Dragon Cave friend area.

Music: Tiny Woods

Recruitables: Bagon, Dratini, Totodile, Shelgon (at a higher level), Vibrava (same), Dragonair (same), Oddish

See that? It's a trap! and also the reason why postgame dungeons suck. They throw these things at you full force. That one is a PP-reducing trap that drains all the PP of one of your moves. It's probably the worst of all of them.
Fortunately, Red has the IQ skill Trap Seer which allows her to reveal but not trigger traps, and Green has an IQ skill that prevents him from stepping on already-revealed traps, so without recruits, we don't have to worry about them at all. Hooray!
This is why most people dislike postgame, because traps are everywhere. So I'm totally just breaking the game by having Trap Seer so early lmao

Well that was quick. Named Ray.

Named Blue.

Explosion traps, like the one Ray is standing on, suck. They take off half of your health.

Warp traps warp anyone who steps on them to somewhere else on the floor. Which is horrible if you're leading around a bunch of low-level recruits because they will die.

Red tries to learn Dragon Rage. Dragon Rage is pretty broken in this game because it deals 65 damage instead of 40 (which is a lot for this game - it's enough to 2HKO Red and Green!), but ultimately Red's other attacks are stronger.

Sticky traps make a random item (or the Pokémon's held item) sticky, which means it can't be used until either it's cleaned with a Cleanse Orb or you leave the dungeon. Irritating like nothing else if the sticky item is food or a Reviver Seed - or your X-Ray Specs.

... I totally forgot I needed a Key. I came here to pick up the item behind this locked door but forgot I needed to get a Key. We'll be back later in this update for you...!

The best place to get Keys, at the moment, is the Solar Cave dungeon, so I head off to there.

Not before evolving Blue though.

Music: Lapis Cave

Recruits: Wynaut, Girafarig, Beldum, Drowzee, Natu, Spoink, Abra, Meditite, Mr. Mime, Lunatone, Metang (at a higher level), Kirlia (at a higher level), Chimecho, Kadabra (at a higher level). Notice a typing pattern?

Named I3... don't get the reference though lmao

This trap spawns a bunch of wild Pokémon around you, which is great when trying to recruit but horrible if you're low on health or just trying to get finished with the floor/dungeon.

I trigger it intentionally, and am rewarded. Named Marise.

i forgot i needed one here too!! seeeeeething

but luck is on our side and I find this on the same floor!

It is the Waterfall HM, which I'll need to go to a couple postgame dungeons.

If I didn't have the ability to walk over water, I'd need to manipulate some water-capable Pokémon on my team to get this HM. It's Surf, and picking it up is necessary for plot advancement. Though like I said at the beginning of this update I'm not going to show the plot now, even though it triggered, in order to keep the narrative steady.

You can also find Sun Stones and Moon Stones in this dungeon (and exclusively in this dungeon), but I didn't, which sucks.

I'm gonna take a second trip there to retrieve the stuff I missed and hopefully pick up some more Keys, Sun/Moon Stones and recruits.

Named Seer.

Named I5.

See that trap there? It's a Pitfall Trap. If you fall into it, you fall to the next floor. If a recruit falls into it... they're just gone. Seer fell into it and is now not on my team anymore.
I hate Pitfall Traps.

This is where the Dive HM appears if we lose it somehow. Since I already have Dive, it is replaced with a Link Cable, which is this game's method of evolving trade evolutions. I'm going to need 12 of these, so may as start picking them up now!

Sadly, I don't pick up another recruit after Seer dies. :(

I do however find a Sun Stone. I only need two.

Since I have a key, I can now go back to Wyvern Hill and pick up the item I missed there. This happens very quickly - named Celia.

And this. I decided to go with my typical Dragonite nickname, Tempest.

... okay, I actually forgot there were two chambers I needed a Key for in this dungeon. I only have one Key. Guess I'll be coming back! Again!!!!

Tempest ended up dying when she stepped on a Warp Trap and got her butt kicked by some Dragonair. :(

That HM is Fly, which I need to get back to Sky Tower.

I need another Key to get the other item from Wyvern Hill. I hear Desert Region has more than Solar Cave does, so I go there.
Desert Region was available after I bought the Furnace Desert friend area.

Also I can do this.

Off to Desert Region!

Music: Mt. Blaze

Recruits: Sandshrew, Nosepass, Trapinch, Baltoy, Gligar

Named Desertsong, a traditional Flygon nickname.

Can't say I understand why this desert has water in it but w/e

Nicknamed Dreidel bc I'm uninspired lol

... I didn't find a single key in that dungeon. I've been lied to. Back to Solar Cave!

I get to do this though.

Named Spoonless.

The suggested name was Because; I go with Bicuzz as a reference to something lol

I found a Moon Stone!

And also a 3 Keys!

Back to Wyvern Hill for hopefully the last time (this update).

Named Tempest.

Named Gatorface.

And here's what we're here for. This item is the Sun Ribbon, which is necessary to evolve Eevee into Espeon.

This is a Dragon Scale, which are only found in this dungeon, floors 29-30. As in the main games, they're needed to evolve Seadra into Kingdra.

Also I evolved Tempest into Dragonair but forgot to screenshot it.

To finish out this update, let's take some jobs in Stormy Sea because I've been collecting them and why not.

This happens instantly. Named Pearl.

Named Mystery (The Mystery wouldn't fit).

One step closer to Lucario Rank!

Plot time!

No... Morning, but only by time...
what

A time so early in the morning that everyone is still in bed...
So... morning.

This might be better if it actually looked like early-morning.

............
.......................
Gggwwoooooooooooooooahhhh!!
The ground starts shaking at this, waking up Red.

Red: Wha... What is it?!
What... What's happening outside?!
Red runs out as something whooshes over her head.

Red: ... This sound...
... Something's coming closer?!
That someone whooshed by too quickly for me to screenshot it! Alas.

Red: Wh-what was that...?
What just happened?
Something huge flew by at an incredible speed...
It seemed to be going... Toward the mountain range in the north?
............... Yawwwwn... Still sleepy...
It's still early. I'll catch a little more sleep...
And completely ignoring her duties, Red goes back to sleep.

Several hours later...
Green: .......... Hey...
Hey, Red.
Red, wake up! Come on, wake up!

I'm standing up, aren't I?

There's some sort of a commotion down at the square.
Let's take a look!
all right fineeeeee
We head to the square.

Look, Red. Everyone's gathered around.
I can SEE THAT with my EYES

well damn

Green: What's up, everyone?
Purple Kecleon: Up? Up? Up?! How could it be up, I ask you!
WHAT are you talking about

My beautiful shop... My fine wares were stolen from me!
Many, many TMs are simply gone! Spirited away! Dark clouds fill my heart!
That sucks I guess

Persian: My bank wasn't hit, but... These are frightening times.
Green: Is the storage OK?
lmao that's all we care about, bank and Kangaskhan's storage

Kangaskhan: No problem. Nothing gets stolen from under my eye.
This mama's not about to make a stupid mistake like that! Kakakah!
Purple Kecleon: You're insinuating... that we were robbed for being careless?!
oshit, purple kecleon is angry, rip kangaskhan

Alakazam: Now wait.
Tell me, Kecleon. You saw... this thief?
Purple Kecleon: Hmm...? No, not very clearly, I didn't.
That is a horrible sentence and you should be ashamed

When I saw it, it had already taken off...
Alakazam: Taken off? You mean it flew away?
Purple Kecleon: Yes.

"yonder direction" lol

At tremendous speed too.
Alakazam: The yonder direction... That would be the Northern Range...
there's probably A LOT of stuff in that direction, Alakazam, can we really say for sure?

It's impossible to determine what the thief is...
So we'll need to investigate this matter properly.
Purple Kecleon: Yes. I beg for justice. My business faces ruination.
oh, too bad

Green: Red. Want to look into this?

The burglar's alleged getaway spot...
The Northern Range is now open for investigation!
Whoo!

That sure is "northern" all right

Music: Mt. Freeze

Recruits: Hoothoot, Spinarak, Seviper

Beautifly (and Ledian later on) are fucking terrifying by the way because they have Silver Wind, which hits everyone in the room and has a fair chance of boosting stats. A Speed boost means they can use Silver Wind again immediately. It's so easy to die from Silver Wind spam, and it's only through the grace of Arceus we haven't had to deal with it yet.

Nicknamed Leroy.

Nicknamed my traditional Noctowl nickname, Minuit (French for midnight). Sorry smogon account - I started this update before you posted. I'll use your other nicknames though!

The later part of the dungeon has a snow theme going on, really cementing the idea that we're climbing a mountain here. I like it a lot.

The upper floors really hammer it home, too.

Look who it is! I guess Latios is the thief, huh?

Who are you?!
............ I see. You're trying to get your TMs back.
But!
Nobody can stop me!
sigh, of course

I'm the Eon Pokémon Latios!
and I'm the World-saving Pokémon Red, what of it?

If you really want your TMs back...
You'll have to take them from me!

BRING IT

So, this isn't a battle where Latios is recruitable, which is why I have the full four-Pokémon party here. I set Green to use Agility and Leroy to use Reflect as Red uses Flamethrower, which burns Latios (not that burn matters a whole lot). Latios immediately uses Refresh to heal the burn though lmao, which means it doesn't move toward me, and I repeat the turn. Green's continued Agilities mean that Red can use two extra Flamethrowers, and Latios dies without even getting close to us lmao.

............ Please... Please let me go...
no one's keeping you here, buddy

I have to go... There's somewhere that I have to go...
Then go!

If... I don't hurry... M-my little sister...
I can only assume that's a reference to Latias.

Latios tries to get up again but then falls down. rip Latios

Apparently Red and Green (and hopefully their friends as well) manage to bring Latios all the way back to Pokémon Square.

What, you don't recognize the place where you stole Kecleon's TMs?

Green: This is Pokémon Square.
You fainted in the Northern Range, so we brought you back here.
I seriously like to imagine just a party of Pokémon carrying Latios' body above their head all the way from the Northern Range back to Pokémon Square.

Latios about to get rekt

You had better be prepared for harsh justice!
Kecleon moves to attack Latios but Alakazam steps in.

Alakazam: Now wait. There must be a good reason for this.
We should at least hear that.
There could also be a bad reason for it, you don't know

Latios: ...! That's right! I have to get my sister...
He moves to fly off again but collapses. I think we injured him :(

Ggh! This wound!
Alakazam: You're injured. You can't fly for now.
Tell me, how do you justify what you've done?
Latios: I have a younger sister. Her name is Latias.
Latias... Crashed somewhere in the Pitfall Valley...
Alakazam: What?! The Pitfall Valley?!
It certainly has an unfortunate name.

Green: ... What is that? What is the Pitfall Valley?
Purple Kecleon: It is near the Northern Range.
They say that anyone so unlucky to fall into the Pitfall Valley... will never again emerge.
Well... shit.

Latios: Latias and I were flying over the Northern Range.
When suddenly, what appeared to be a meteorite struck Latias on the wing...
Her wing shattered by the blow, Latias tumbled down into the depths of the Pitfall Valley...
...
:(((

Green: A meteorite?!
Red! Do you think maybe that it's a chunk of the blown-up meteor?
WHAT ELSE WOULD IT BE

Latios: I went to the Pitfall Valley in hopes of rescuing my sister, but...
I made little headway... I wasn't up to the task...
You're a legendary, and one of the OU/Uber ones too, what you mean you weren't up to the task?!

Alakazam: So that drove you to steal Technical Machines...
Latios: Yes. I intended to make amends after I saved my sister...

latios is great ok

Purple Kecleon: Oh... Oh, my! It is not a problem! Not a problem at all!
For a reason so compelling, it can't be helped. Hahaha.
Glad the Kecleon brothers are sometimes forgiving

Alakazam: However... Even if you were plumb the depths of Pitfall Valley...
What would you do then?
The nether regions of the Pitfall Valley are a void...
This sentence confused me as a 13-year-old.

You will wander forever, neither falling... nor living... What then?
Neither falling nor living? What the hell does THAT mean???

Latios: ............... So much time has passed since my sister crashed.
(that might be my fault for taking all those missions before starting the postgame, oops)

Latias hasn't been able to climb out of the depths. She is all alone down there.
Even if I end up like her, unable to escape... Two would be better than one.
Latios' devotion to his sister is quite sweet.

Latias wouldn't have to be so alone...
Alakazam: How foolish... Do you think Latias wishes for that?
well no but

Green: But... It's a place you can't escape, isn't it?
I don't see how we could do a rescue in a place like that...
Simple. Bring a shitton of rope.

Green: You can?! How?!
Alakazam: You already have the means in your possession.
... our rescue team badge?

The Teleport Gem. Use that.
ok tbh I was actually very surprised the first time I played this game that the idea came back like this, I expected it to be a one-off.

Green: The Teleport Gem? The one we used to get up to the sky where Rayquaza lives?
What other one is there??

But it got broken in the falling star's explosion.
Alakazam: While it is unlikely to carry you to the sky again, it should be able to carry you a shorter distance.
If you were to use the Teleport Gem from deep within the Pitfall Valley...
Green: That's it!
If we did that, we could escape with Latias!
Problem solved!

Hell yeah it is! Let's do it!

Let's go rescue Latias!

All right!

... I'll be doing it next update, though. I'm trying to space out the postgame material as much as possible to keep a consistent balance between plot and new dungeons and the normal recruitment missions I need to take on. So, for the rest of this update, let's do some Fun With Recruits (and new dungeons too I guess).

After evolving Minuit.

I decided to take a trio of missions at Sky Tower. I can't recruit Rayquaza yet (I wouldn't be able to get to it while taking missions, but also it has a -10% recruit rate and I don't have +10% in bonuses yet), but there are a few other recruits I can pick up (Solrock, Koffing, Aerodactyl, Duskull) and Sky Tower also usually has a lot of Gummis, which postgame dungeons also tend to lack.

Since we have the All-Terrain Hiker IQ skill, we can literally fly, apparently. I especially love how our shadows are still present.

Named Ira.

Named James.

I'm also going to take a trip to Darknight Relic, which houses 15 floors of Ghost-types, and see what I can find. Darknight Relic opened up as soon as postgame did, because it requires the Darkness Ridge Friend Area, which we got from Storm during the main game.

Music: Sinister Woods

Recruits: Shuppet, Gastly, Misdreavus, Sableye, Haunter (at a higher level), Duskull

Well... that was quick.
Named Maya.

Named Garnet.

It's a great dungeon because all of the ghosts sneak through walls to bother you. Despite being only 15 floors it's one of the hardest dungeons I've had to deal with for that reason alone. Amazing

Red levels up to 50 though! At 50, we now have a +10% bonus to recruiting. Getting closer to being able to recruit Groudon, Rayquaza, and evolutions!

FINALLY OH MAN

The last thing for this update: I'm going to take a sojourn to Southern Cavern. It's a 50-floor long dungeon that is the only place in the game to find Metal Coats (which I need 2 of). This will be our longest dungeon yet - let's go!

Music: Buried Relic (spoilers? lol)
I named the Diglett Speckles.

Recruits: Diglett, Seedot, Geodude, Cubone, Phanpy, Vibrava (at a higher level), Baltoy, Gligar, Larvitar, Graveler (same), Rhyhorn, Pupitar (same), Golem (same), Onix

Fortunately, this dungeon isn't quite the maze that Darknight Relic was, and straightforward with no ghosts coming in through the walls all the time. A breath of fresh air, despite the dungeon length!

Named Skelebro, the unused suggestion for Cubone from the very beginning of the LP.

These are not fun though.

yay

AAAAAAAA

Here are the Metal Coats we came for! I'm glad we got two on the first trip; I won't need to come back this far into the dungeon in the future.

Let's take on Pitfall Valley!

Music: Mt. Blaze Peak

Recruits: Farfetch'd, Ledyba, Hoppip, Spearow, Doduo, Swablu, Yanma, Scyther, Skiploom (at a higher level), Aerodactyl

All Flying-types. I wonder if that's intentional given the way we talk about the dungeon - nothing can escape from it... except things that can fly out maybe?
Except Raticate. Raticate isn't a Flying type, I guess it just lives here.

Also it has Butterfree who is a terrifying Silver Wind user... fun

Named Spearmint, another reference

Named "Not Ho-oh" actually because "Ho-Oh??" is too close to /actual/ Ho-Oh for my liking.

Spearmint fell into the Pitfall trap. rip Spearmint we hardly knew ye :(

I do get a replacement recruit though: Apple the Hoppip.

... It's level 8. Oh boy, let's play "escort mission"!

fucking amazing
i love escort missions!!!!! :^)

and then I died to sonic boom because Apple used up my reviver seed and sonic boom is a terrible move that should be banned

LETS GO AGAIN

i dont like you but i need you on my team, apple (2)

Spearmint 2.

later floors lose the water, cementing the idea we are descending into the pits of hell

... Y-you are...?
... Did you maybe... come to save me?
Maybe. Are you Latias?

Yes, yes you are.
Wow this place is miserable.

My wing is still damaged a little, but... I can go.
(sorry :( )

And we teleport out.

:')

Latias: I'm sorry... I caused you so much worry...
Kecleon: Oh, this is great... It's so touching... Sniffle...
Latios: (to Red and Green) My sister is safe, all thanks to you.
To be honest, I came close to giving up...
But we're back together again... It's happiness beyond words...
We owe you so much gratitude! Thank you!
awww we were happy to help

Green: It's OK, really. When you put it that way, it's even a little embarrassing. Hahaha.
ok but how

Latios: However... We have no money or any other way of repaying your kindness.
So, and it's the least we can do... May we join your rescue team?
this is how friends are made
totally

Green: Huh...?

Yeah seriously Green how hard was that to parse?

Latios: Would that work? Would you be willing to accept us on your rescue team?

I could be a horrid dick here but no

When we say yes they start dancing in a circle or something.

Green: Done!
You're our fellow members from now on. Great to have you!
Latios: Thanks for having us!
Latias: Delighted to join!
I decide not to give them nicknames in the established legendary tradition for this run. They head off to their Friend Area.

Here they are in their habitat!

I have a bunch of missions for Magma Cavern, so let's get those out of the way.

Yes... it's an escort mission. Hopefully it won't be too bad?

Welcome Guy Fieri back to the team!

a monster house... on an escort mission... great

I'm glad that went so smoothly.

Named Shamwow.

And we get all of our missions completed successfully!

For our next recruitment trip, we're going to head to Waterfall Pond, which contains a lot of water-type Pokémon, including the three water starters.

Music: Frosty Forest
Recruits: Mudkip, Lotad, Poliwag, Goldeen, Barboach, Wooper, Surskit, Totodile, Corphish, Magikarp, Squirtle, Poliwhirl (at a higher level), Lombre (same), Marshtomp (same), Feebas (from Red Rescue Team)

Named Lily.

Named Cashier.

Cashier died on the 15th floor after being warped away and cornered :(( i'm sorry friend!

I'm going to come back to Waterfall Pond a few more times to pick up some more recruits (like hopefully Cashier 2) while it's on my mind, since this place has a lot of unique recruits and it'll be nice to get them early.

Named Muddy.

[accidentally overwrote this, it was a screenshot of me recruiting a Goldeen]
Named Arches.

... you know what, screw it, I have plenty of Escape Orbs. We're using them to make this shorter. You keep recruits if you use an Escape Orb to finish the dungeon.

Although apparently I only have 15 of them in storage. Okay never mind we're doing the other attempts legit. This is a short dungeon after all.

[also overwrote this, it was a Barboach recruit]
Named Cashier, hopefully this one will live!

Named Mallow.

Named Grandpa.

These recruit missions are going so quickly. Named Skipper.

Did this with Mallow and Skipper.

Gonna handle 4 missions in Northern Range now (including an escort mission, but hopefully it won't suck) and hope to pick up a Spinarak.

yasssss
Named Arachna.

ok but why does it have Fury Swipes twice

Oh, great, hail. I'm going to have to prevent Tropius from dying of weather damage by going to the stairs as quickly as possible... fortunately the stairs are right there.

This took way too damn long because Shedinja like to float through walls where you can't reach them. God I hate Ghost types

FINALLY, NO MORE WORRYING ABOUT THE RECRUIT

Decided to go take some missions in Stormy Sea and look for recruits there too.

Named Stinger.

Named Lord Helix because I'm trash
Lord Helix died when a Spheal used Powder Snow and wasted my Reviver Seed by killing Stinger first. :( rip

Named Clubber.

No wonder you need saving. How did you make it this far in the dungeon without dying, though?

And then I died. Ughhh let's try this again I guess. Resetting, so bye Stinger and Clubber

Named Drizzle.

Lord Helix the second.

Anyway, I'm gonna stop here for now; this update is overdue as is. Next time: Fiery Field!

By the way, the next update will probably be a little delayed (more than usual, I mean) - just a forewarning.

Time for a new plot.

Who is that? Over there.
Lombre: Never seen it before.
It's not from around these parts.
It's a Spinda tottering into the square but I forgot to screenshot it.

No more... I can't walk anymore...
Well, damn.

I'm falling down...

rip Spinda, 2017-2017

Bellsprout: Goodness! It needs help!
Red rushes over to attend to it...

and we cut back here.

Green: It's Red's house.
That's not very helpful, Green, if Spinda has no idea who "Red" is.

It's also our rescue team's base.
Spinda: Oh! ... Did you maybe rescue me?
what do you think

Th-thank you...
Green: Hahaha, it's OK. There's no need for thanks.
Rather than that... What happened?
yeah, why are you dying Spinda

Y-yes...
I'm named Spinda.
I like to travel.
I've been traveling all over seeing the sights and other Pokémon.
jealous

It was on my travels that I heard rumors of a mirage Pokémon...
Which one tho?

Green: A mirage Pokémon?
Spinda: Yes! That!
Isn't it exciting?
If you say so

Ever since then, I've been traveling all over in hopes of seeing the mirage Pokémon...
But I've had no luck... Finally, I became dizzy from fatigue... And I must have passed out.
Well how lucky for you that you just so happened to collapse within five feet of civilization!!!

rippppppp

I'm simply worn out...
Green: Wait a second! Are you sure you won't regret giving up that easily?
EXCUSE YOU green how do you know it's "that easily", he DIED and i'd say that's qualification for it was NOT easy

Spinda: But I... I've reached my physical limit...
SEE!!!

If I push myself any further, I will collapse again. It's not good for my health...
YEAH green IT'S NOT GOOD for his HEALTH

... Please, I want you to have this.

It's a feather duh

Spinda: It's a... Clear Wing...
or an entire wing I guess

Green: Clear Wing?
Spinda: Yes. I found it on my travels.
It's a wing of some sort. It's transparent, but... If you hold it up like this...

... I don't see anything.

At first I thought it was just pretty to look at...
But after checking around, it appears to be related to the mirage Pokémon somehow.
But I couldn't learn anything beyond that.
... Sniff... It's very disappointing, but I'm giving up...
:(

We watch him wobble away unsteadily before Green decides "maybe I should check if he's okay".

Spinda: Oh, no. When I walk, I always totter. Bye.
And he leaves for real this time.

Green: Clear Wing, huh... I don't have a clue what this is all about...
But the mirage Pokémon does interest you, right?
I mean, it's probably a friend.

I think Xatu is the one to ask for something like this.
Huh, not bad.

Xatu should be at the peak of the Great Canyon.
...
REALLY
REALLY GREEN
DID YOU THINK I'D FORGET

We should go! To the Great Canyon!
Sounds good!

It's been a while...

Named Perry.

Named Clarence even though that was the name of the Weepinbell not the Doduo

wait wasn't something supposed to happen

oh, okay.
(where are my teammates???)

Xatu: What is it? Have you reason to see me?
Nah I just felt like showing up and bothering you and then leaving

Hm! This... This is a Clear Wing...
... I see. About the mirage Pokémon... That is what you wish to know?
yes! tell me everything plz

Kwaaaah!
....... The mirage Pokémon...
I know... Little about it...
... oh. Thanks

............
...........................
.....................................................................................
... yes?!

However!
There are Pokémon that live, breathe, and prosper with the very land.
Isn't that all Pokémon?

They... rage with the eruptions of volcanoes...
Roar as one with thunder...
And race with the north wind.
These are some awful familiar descriptions.

They are said to be shadows. Shadows of the mirage Pokémon.
I mean, I guess?

To the northwest, there lies a large island.
An island known as the "Three Fields."
That's an odd name for an island

There is one such field. The Fiery Field!
One of the Pokémon... A shadow of the mirage... is there.
Go. You must go to the Fiery Field.
The answers you seek... Perhaps they await you there.

Let's go!

This is the first dungeon that has the requirement of us saving before entering. If we die here, I'll take it like a man instead of abusing savestates to pretend it didn't happen.

Music: Mt. Blaze
Recruits: Vulpix, Numel, Slugma, Charmander, Magby, Torkoal, Ditto, Quilava (at a higher level), Machoke (same), Combusken (same), Charmeleon (same)

The only ones we actually need to get here are Charmander and Vulpix; with the exception of the evolutions, we actually have all the others. You might have figured out who this dungeon boss is. We're not able to recruit it on our first visit (and we're not actually likely to do so anyway, it has a 0.1% rate before bonuses), so we can go ahead and recruit two things... if we're lucky.

Named Sparkle, my traditional Vulpix nickname.

Named Spirit, another reference.

By the way - this dungeon sucks. A lot. There are traps everywhere that make your food and items unusable and deplete your PP. The Fields are considered some of the worst dungeons in MD1. Fortunately... my IQ skills help me protect against Traps. Some people are not so lucky, though.

Spirit died against this Charmeleon. Fortunately I had a Reviver Seed.

See that item over there? It's a Fire Stone. They only appear on the 29th floor of this very dungeon. I need 3 to evolve Growlithe, Vulpix, and Eevee. And fortunately, I do pick up 3 total here! Hooray.

well, here we go

Well Entei wasted no time in getting to the point.

The likes of you have no business being here!
We have a feather

I kinda gathered tbh

If you refuse to leave... I shall forcefully expel you!

Buddy, we beat up Rayquaza. Bring it the hell on.
Opening moves: I set Sparkle to use Ember exclusively, and Green to use Agility. Red starts with a long-distance Flamethrower.

Entei takes the bait and steps forward. This time, Red uses Smokescreen; Green and Sparkle keep their Agility/Ember ploy.
Because of Green's Agility, we get an extra attack. I accidentally misclick and use the standard A attack. But it doesn't really matter, Green uses Agility again and we get another extra attack. This time, Red uses Flamethrower.
Entei gets to attack for the first time... except it misses, of course, because of Smokescreen. I love this combo
I set Green to use Bullet Seed exclusively, and it kills Entei. Hooray!

But we're not done yet.

Urghgh... I... I lost...
Damn right you did.

You... What do you wish?

Yes, yes it is.

... I understand now. To meet that Pokémon...
this is what we were trying to tell you before man!!!

Entei: .................. Stand aside.

Entei attacks it. are you TRYING to sabotage things man

The Clear Wing... transformed into the Red Wing!

oh

Take this and go west!
There, you will find the Lightning Field.
You will know your path there!
Now go! To the Lightning Field!

awwwwww yissss

And...
Gained access to the Lightning Field!
Hooray! But... we're not going there yet. As per tradition, I'm going to take some missions and do some recruit fun first.

Though first we're going to evolve Spirit. This is the first item evolution so far!

hooray

I decide to go back to Desert Region for this update's recruit-a-thon.

Named Moana I guess lmao

Named Oracle, my traditional Claydol nickname.
Actually, with this, I've recruited everything that I can in Desert Region. Hooray!

So now that there's no real reason to go back to Desert Region, let's go take a few missions at Sky Tower. I could use the huge amount of Gummis that Sky Tower often has.

Named Umbra.

Yes! Getting closer. Red and Green both only have one IQ skill left to learn.

Named Pascal.

Let's take some missions in Magma Cavern and see if we can't get the last two Pokémon we need from there (except for Groudon) - Mawile and Onix.

Named 0dd1. I will make no attempt to explain this

yasss
Named Dacian.

I had a Metal Coat and Link Cable in storage, so I could do this easily.

Let's go check out Darknight Relic a few times for recruits. I need two Gastly, Duskull, and Misdreavus - two trips... ideally.

Named Sabrina, because there was that Haunter in the anime with Sabrina and yeah this is a reach

Named Lucy.

I can do this with Sabrina right away.

Named... uh... I don't really have a good Gengar name...

[3/10/17, 11:49:28 AM] Altissimo: someone give me a nickname for a gengar
[3/10/17, 11:49:39 AM] smogon account : I nicknamed mine willa wisp cuz it was a girl

ok sure

yaassss
Named Phatos.

That's all of the Darknight Relic recruits down!

And also I do this.

Last thing for this update: some missions at Northern Range.

This is the last recruit for Northern Range. Named Aragog.

Never mind, I misclicked and Aragog died. I'll be back for you at some point...!

... I don't even know how this happened. Reset time!

Aragog 2.0 has come to us.

And I can evolve her.

Next time: Lightning Field!

Upcoming recruits:
Mareep
Electrike
Magnemite
Plusle/Minun
Elekid
Poliwag
Volbeat

it's ok bro some of these names are really bad

Last time, we got our Clear Wing turned into a Red Wing by Entei and were told to seek out the Lightning Field. That's where we'll start today!

Yes, yes...

Music: Mt. Thunder
Recruits: Mareep, Electrike, Magnemite, Pikachu (at a higher level), Flaaffy (same), Plusle (from Red Rescue Team), Minun, Elekid, Tropius

Named CRT because it's 9 am and I'm tired

ok but why is it snowing here?

Sonicboom sucks. Just a PSA. Magnemite (and later, Magneton) are super obnoxious because of it.
This dungeon is generally not as shit as Fiery Field though, mostly because traps aren't as ubiquitous.

Named Negative, my traditional Minun nickname because I'm terribly unoriginal

BUT WHY THO

Hello Thunderstone!
Like in Fiery Field, Thunderstones can only be found on floor 29 of this dungeon. I only find one on this trip, but that's okay; I'm going to need to come back for recruiting purposes anyway.

Raikou is just as to-the-point as Entei.

This is Lightning Field. It is my... domain!

oooooh i'm SO scared

A body like roiling rain clouds!
A roar that echoes thunder!
HOW TERRIFYING

Many have trespassed upon my domain...
But what became of them? Let me demonstrate...
And you, too, shall experience the pain they suffered!

BRING IT

I set Green to use Agility, CRT to use Spark, and Negative to use Helping Hand as Red leads with Flamethrower.
Raikou steps closer, and the series of events is repeated.
Red's third Flamethrower misses but it doesn't really matter because we still get an extra attack thanks to Agility.
Raikou dies to the next one. Great!

you gave me the option to fight and I fought

How... How did this happen...?
But regardless, you have won.
Let me hear your wish.

I like how you recognize it even though Entei literally made it that way yesterday

............ You... Stand back!

The Red Wing... transformed into the Sunset Wing!

it is actually quite pretty I will agree

Raikou: Go northeast!
To a place called the Northwind Field.
You will find a Pokémon there named Suicune.
If you are lucky enough to meet Suicune...
Perhaps your wish will come true!

And...
Gained access to the Northwind Field!
AWESOME

... Next time, of course.
For now, let's get some Solar Cave recruits.

Named Seer.

Named Swensen, whatever that means lol

Green's now at level 60. This gives a blanket 12.5% increase to recruit rates, which means I can now recruit Rayquaza and Groudon, although they only have a 2.5% chance at this point.

My missions list is full, so let's get a couple Sky Tower missions out of the way.

This is the last IQ skill for Red, and it allows her to walk through walls by just kind of breaking them. It's OP and was nerfed for MD2. It does remove belly quicker than normal though which is why I won't be keeping it on except for certain circumstances where it makes it easier to navigate.

The yellow dot is a Pokémon to rescue... but it's hailing. NPC Pokémon get hurt by hail just as much as our Pokémon do, so Pokémon needing rescue can actually faint if you don't get to them in time. Fortunately, it is right there, and we know where it is ahead of time, so we should be able to get to it before it faints (and we do).

Named Alea.

me irl: "I need a nickname for an Aerodactyl"
my friend sitting next to me: "ummmmmmmmmmm Big Boy"
me: "ok"

Really, in the last room? Ugh
We live, though, and finish up the dungeon.

Let's take four missions at Stormy Sea and see what we can pick up there too.

Named Stinger.

Named Aurora.

Let's go back to Solar Cave for some recruits.

Named Ted.

Named Sleeper.

Named Wobburrito.

This mission is different because it states that the reward will be a Mime Jr. Fig. This is something that automatically sits outside our rescue base and is there to say "hey look what we did!" Even though I hate escort missions I'm going to take this in order to get the figurine!

Beforehand, though, I did this.

This happened right after though. Named Pearl.

I can relax now. Hooray!

Yes! Let's go see i-

... or this could happen first. One more rank left: Lucario!

isn't it beautiful

Let's go finish up Solar Cave recruiting.

Finally. This took way too damn long, holy shit.
Named Piper.

Good, now I don't have to worry about Hypno again. (Not a big fan of Hypno.)

Finally! I don't know how many of these I've killed trying to recruit one.
Named Harvey.

We actually are missing 2 Abra and 1 Beldum, but that's assuming that I want to get their lowest forms, which I don't: Kadabra is much more common than Abra, and Metang might be higher-leveled. So I'll come back when I have enough of a recruit bonus to get middle-stages. Until then, we're done here at Solar Cave... except for the part where I still don't have any Moon Stones

Harvey stepped on a Warp Orb and started getting harassed by a couple Metang, so I just decided to cut my losses and use an Escape Orb anyway.

For the end of this update, I have another few missions to take at Sky Tower and Stormy Sea. I only have one recruit left from Sky Tower (other than Rayquaza) - Tropius, so maybe I can get that while I'm here.

I MADE IT BEFORE IT DIED OF HAIL
YASSSSSS

I didn't get a Tropius though :C

Last thing for this update: another couple of missions at Stormy Sea.

Named Frank. (The suggested Tentacruel name was Red-Eye, and Frank comes from this. If you get the reference good on you)

Named Clubber.

Hi! Nice work as always. I just wanted to point that Super Mobile does not consume the belly (well, not more than regular walking). So you probably want to use it actually

To my understanding, it's Ghosts walking inside undestroyed walls that consume your belly really fast. I've never heard of Super Mobile wearing it out at any noticeable pace from breaking the wall apart. That said, I also used Tight Belts a lot on my Super Mobile leader, so maybe I'm misremembering.

if that's two people saying Super Mobile doesn't consume Belly, I should probably look into that. I'll lead off the next update with some tests. Thanks, guys!

got 2 name suggestions for you: (both are bad and not very original)

Fearmint the Fearow. Yes, I did go there.
Type: Bull the Snubbull.

Silver_Lucario42: I already decided to name Fearow Not Ho-oh, but I will take your suggestion for Snubbull!

Let's test this Belly thing.

Okay, so...

With Energy Saver on, it takes 15 (or 12????? both happened) steps to lose a single Belly point.

It took 12 steps for another one when I started going through walls. So I guess it doesn't deplete Belly. I guess. (Idk how these mechanics work, is it 12 or 15??? lol)

Okay, I'm actually scared here. This dungeon has more dangerous Pokémon than either of the other Field dungeons. You'll see why.

Music: Mt. Freeze
Recruits: Poliwag, Volbeat, Poliwhirl (at a higher level), Delibird, Wartortle (same), Croconaw (same), Absol

Well, that was quick. Named Lux.

Delcatty is one of the reasons why this dungeon sucks. Between Attract, Sing, and Doubleslap, they 0are guaranteed to annoy the living shit out of you unless you get rid of them quickly.

Delibird is also one of the reasons why this dungeon sucks, because Present does random fixed damage and a few unlucky rolls could kill you.

Of course, it's great to have that power on your side.
Named St. Nick.

what even is this design

This is one of the few dungeons to have air. Don't ask me why a field is apparently suspended in the air.

Finally, Politoed are the worst. They have Perish Song, which affects everything ON THE FLOOR and means you die in 3 steps. It has a high miss chance, but if you get hit, the only way to avoid it is a Heal Seed (or having a Reviver Seed for your inevitable demise). This is the one I was really worried about, here. Since I'm obscenely overleveled, though, they're easy enough to kill... fortunately.

That's a Water Stone... see a pattern? I need 5. ... and I actually find 5. Nice.

Why are you here?!
oh my god do we need to do this EVERY TIME

Clear and bracing air... Crystalline, pure water...
To stand guard over this beautiful and untainted land... That is why I am here.
We're not tainting it though, buddy

Intruders foul the air with their outside ills.
Oh shut up

There is one but one solution for invaders: expulsion by force!
Here I come!

I beat up your brothers and I'll beat you up too!

Opening: I set Green to use Agility and Lux to do whatever as Red uses Flamethrower (which does a surprising amount of damage).

Instead of having Green continue to use Agility, I set him to use the super-effective Bullet Seed. Suicune dies to two Bullet Seed hits. kek

I have lost...
I admit it. You are strong.
I saved the world bruh

... I see. You came seeking the mirage Pokémon...
... Step back.

The Sunset Wing... transformed into the Rainbow Wing!

It's hard to tell from this, but the wing is actually cycling through the colors. A nice touch.

Suicune: This Rainbow Wing...
It is the key to meeting the mirage Pokémon.
Take this wing...
Take it to the mountain so high that its peak is obscured by clouds.
Sounds like exactly my shit tbh

Yes... Take it to Mt. Faraway!
The mirage Pokémon is at its peak!

And... Gained access to Mt. Faraway!
Hell yeah!

... next time, of course.

Today we're going to finish up recruits at Wyvern Hill. I need two Totodile and four Oddish from there, so a minimum of three trips.

Took long enough.
Named Natura.

Named Toadstool.

Level 40 Oddish means I can do this with Toadstool.

Named Cruncher.

Named Toxia.

I don't have any Leaf Stones, so I can't evolve her into Vileplume yet, but I can do this at least.

And this too.

Red is finally level 60, which means I can recruit Groudon and Kyogre!!!!! I'll be leaving that for next time, though.

Gatorface was already used so Gator seems superfluous. Named Florida.

[accidentally erased this screenshot of recruiting an Oddish]
Named Dancer.

We're done with Wyvern Hill!

I evolved Florida into a Croconaw but forgot to screenshot it.

I did get these shots though.

Let's take some more missions in the familiar places. First up, Sky Tower. Since I have all of the recruits I can get from here except Tropius, I decide to bring along Larry the Aron, who needs to level up to evolve into Lairon.

YES
Now I can start stockpiling Gummis in order to evolve some of the happiness evolutions.

Eh... we're almost done anyway, and Larry isn't disappearing forever, so whatever.

YASSSS
Named Ariera.

That's all the Sky Tower recruits save Rayquaza!

Now to Pitfall Valley.

Named Lyson. Hopefully this Lyson survives.

Named Lou.

So I got into a bit of a bad situation here. Red was put to sleep by this Yanma as another Yanma snuck up on Lou. Fortunately, Red woke up quickly, but not before I realized there was probably no way to get to Lou before he died to Yanma. Solution: make Green leader, use Agility three times, and use the extra speed to move him over to Lou before anything could happen. Never thought I'd see Agility being useful outside a boss battle!

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF ugh wow that sucks I forgot I needed it and swapped it for an item I found on the ground

whatever, I'll do it right later. I don't want to lose these recruits.

Did this with one of said recruits. (Lyson survived :V)

Now time for more Stormy Sea.

Named Small Fry.

Named Pinch, my Armaldo's nickname from Alpha Sapphire.

Gonna go to Waterfall Pond to do some recruiting there. Here, have a montage:

Named Doodle.

Named Fortune.

Named Yippy (another reference).

Named Cannon, my go-to Squirtle name.

Named Carefree (a joke at the fact that the Lombre in the square was worried about getting too carefree if he evolved into Ludicolo).

Named Ariba.

And I could do this with Carefree and Ariba.

Named Yeppa (from a reference to the thing that Yippy is from).

Named Skitter.

\o/

Named Hey.

Named Radium.

Named Tajiri.

Named FurioFrog because FuriousFrog wouldn't fit. (it's American Kirby so FuriousFrog totally fits)

Did this with Tajiri and FurioFrog.

Named HypnoToad :V

Finally! Named Survivor.

Did this with HypnoToad and Survivor.

:V

Named Shellshock bc JigglyStuck wouldn't fit lol

Did this for ShellShock and DeMasque.

That's all of the recruits I can get from Waterfall Pond, except for Magikarp and Feebas, which I'll come back for later.

Next time. Mt. Faraway... and we'll get an item to finally allow us some freedom. Next time will be more interesting than this, promise!

Upcoming recruits: Snorunt, Castform, Sneasel, Machop, Whismur, Porygon, Abra, Aron, Gulpin, Geodude, Makuhita, Elekid, Rhyhorn, Venonat, Granbull, Ekans, Meowth, Igglybuff, Miltank, Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Ivysaur, Bayleef, Lickitung, Grovyle, Skarmory

Don't forget to suggest names!
