Cross Evolution (now with Viability Rankings!)

Credit to Angry2
Somehow approved by Eevee General and The Immortal

One of the main aspects of Pokémon is evolving. Since the very beginning, back in RBY, we saw our Pokémon evolve to the next stage of what we call "evolutionary line". They give Pokémon new moves/abilities/typing and also stats! But what if we could cross these evolutionary lines? That's what you can do in this metagame!

You can switch it by nicknaming your mon the name of the line you want. It gives the new stats and access of a maximum of 2 moves from the evolutionary lines' movepool. Abilities are replaced by the final form abilities. If the evolution gets a new secondary typing, the cross-evolved Pokémon will get it too (or replace its old second type).
Complicated? Want an example? Ok!

Klang is a Stage 2 that can evolve into a Stage 3, so it can "cross-evolve" with a Stage 3 Pokémon such as Gallade. Gallade has +30 HP, +90 Attack, +30 Defense, equal Special Attack, +60 Special Defense and +30 Speed than Kirlia. Its abilities are Steadfast and Justified, and has access to Close Combat and Knock Off. It also gains a secondary Fighting type. As a result:

Gallade (Klang) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Justified
New Stats: 90/170/125/70/145/80
New typing: Steel/Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shift Gear
- Gear Grind
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
Klang has now access to two extra moves to balance its horrendous natural movepool. Steel-type grants it a lot of set-up opportunities, aided by a 90/125/145 bulk and a monstrous Attack to wreak havoc.

Rules:
  • Ubers banlist and clauses + Evolutionary clause: this prevents two or more Pokemon on a team from cross-evolving with the same Pokémon. OU's Baton Pass clause is in effect as well. You cannot have more than one Pokémon with the move Baton Pass and you can't pass Speed and other stats simultaneously.
  • You can "cross-evolve" your Pokemon by naming them after the intended Pokemon. So for example you nickname your Pontya "Dugtrio," giving it +25 HP, +25 Attack, +25 Defense, +15 Special Attack, +25 Special Defense, and +25 Speed, and access to Sand Veil, Arena Trap, and Sand Force.
  • Evolution is limited so that Stage 1, 2, and 3 are matched accordingly. Ponyta is a Stage 1 Pokemon and can evolve into any Stage 2 but it cannot evolve into a Stage 3, so you couldn't name it Venusaur or Charizard, but you can name it Ivysaur or Charmeleon. Same goes for Ivysaur not having access to Dugtrio, but it does has access to Alakazam and Gengar.
  • Cross-evolving with Shedinja (Wonder Guard. The ban does not include Ninjask, which is legal) is banned. Further bans will be considered if needed as the metagame evolves.
  • Pokémon that cannot evolve cannot cross-evolve either.
  • Using an evolutionary line with a Pokémon with a mega won't give you access to the respective Mega Stone, signature items (Thick Club, Light Ball) or Eviolite.
  • Cross-evolved Pokémon get the abilities from the line they chose. So for example, crossing Haunter with Alakazam, you get Inner Focus, Magic Guard or Synchronize as possible abilities.
  • However, getting Huge Power, Pure Power and Shadow Tag via cross-evolution is banned.
  • You can't go over base 255 or under 1 on any stat. Combinations that produce Pokémon with negative base stats or over 255 are banned.
Since this is a bit difficult to understand, here you have a simplified explanation by Eevee General, hope this helps clearing out some doubts:
Q: How do you know if a Pokemon can cross-evolve into another?
A: First you need to find out what stage it is. For the sake of this OM, Pokémon are broken into three stages: 1, 2, & 3. Each stage represents where a Pokémon belongs in its evolutionary line. Some lines have 3 stages and some have 2. Stage 1 Pokémon can only evolve into Stage 2 Pokémon, and Stage 2 Pokémon can only evolve into Stage 3 Pokémon. If a Pokémon doesn't evolve at all under normal circumstances, it cannot evolve in this OM either.

Stage 1 Charmander is the first in its line.
Stage 2 Charmeleon comes after Charmander and is second in its line.

Stage 3 Charizard comes after Charmeleon and is third in its line.

Stage 1 Mankey is the first in its line.
Stage 2 Primeape comes after Mankey and is second in its line. No Pokemon come after Primeape in this line.

Examples:

Stage 1 Charmander
Stage 2 Primeape ✔

This is a legal evolution because Charmander is a Stage 1 and can evolve under normal circumstances.

Stage 1 Girafarig
Stage 2 Primeape
This is an illegal evolution because Girafarig cannot evolve under normal circumstances.

Stage 2 Ivysaur
Stage 3 Charizard ✔
This is a legal evolution because Ivysaur is a Stage 2 and can evolve under normal circumstances.

Stage 2 Primeape
Stage 3 Charizard
This is an illegal evolution because Primeape cannot evolve under normal circumstances.

tehy's version

This is playable on the ROM server! Thanks urkerab!

This meta actually sounds really awesome.

Milotic(Chinchou)@ Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
New Base Stats: 150/83/97/146/126/68
New Type: Water/Electric
EVs: 252 HP/252 Def/ 4 Spa
Bold Nature
-Scald
-Recover
-Volt Switch
-Toxic
I think we might need to ban the Milotic line as well. It gives Chinchou amazing defenses and high special attack. It's speed is low, so it allows for slow volt switches.

Scolipede(Combusken)@ Focus Sash
Ability: Speed Boost
New Base Stats: 80/130/50/100/50/120
New Type: Fire/Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 4 SpD
Jolly Nature
-Protect
-Earthquake
-Superpower
-Flare Blitz
Although it is more frail, Combusken becomes a very dangerous offensive pokemon after a speed boost. Earthquake gives it well needed coverage and protect is to increase it's longevity.

Garchomp(Doublade)@ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
New Base Stats: 99/150/180/75/79/55
New Type: Ghost/Steel
EVs: 252 Atk/ 252 HP/ 4 SpD
0 Spe IVs
Brave Nature
-Earthquake
-Stealth Rock
-Gyro Ball
-Shadow Sneak
The bulk of this is insane. Earthquake allows it to hit steel types, and stealth rock gives it a way to set up hazards. Rocky Helmet and Rough Skin does a heavy amount of chip damage to physical attackers.

Hopefully i did this right.

How does Eviolite work? Pulling things out of my ass, but if you named Bulbasaur "Doublade" would it still have access to Eviolite? What if you named Ponyta "Doublade", would it get Eviolite access despite not normally having an Eviolite-legal second stage?

On related notes, I assume this wouldn't extend to Thick Club / Light Ball for the same reasons as Huge Power lines being banned

More questions...

I can use for example Galvantula, give for this pokemon name from Third stage pokemon, and play with that mutant spider?
Or only I can use Joltik and give for him name from second evolution stage pokemon?

When I can "evolve" my Galvantula once more...
All Eeveelutions gain really huge buff...

EDIT:
One more thing to say:
Now all first stage pokemons gain acces to evolve into... Shedinja.
Yeah. New evolution give that Wonder Guard + Ghost type, so any Normal or Dark type will liked new option.

EDIT 2:
Also Porygon2 could gain alternative, better evolution from any third stage. We have a lot of options: Greninja for Prankster, Machamp give No Guard abillity (here sadly not much sp. atack), Nidoking can give Sheer Force...
We maybe could find more evolution, but I feel this Porygon2 (and maybe normal Porygon) could gain some interesting new "evolutions"...

Eviolite doesn't work with any "cross-evolved" Pokémon.

No, you can't, as Galvantula doesn't have a natural stage 3 evolution. Thus, Galvantula can't be "cross-evolved" at all. Joltik is limited to Stage 2 Pokémon.

What happens if a stat goes below 1 or above 255 (e.g. Chansey nicknamed practically anything and getting above 255 HP, or Happiny nicknamed Ninjask and getting negative Defense)?

Will Shedinja count as an evolution of Nincada that things can 'evolve' into, or does the special method make it not count as an evolution?

For stats getting less than 1 or above 255, Then these cross-evolutions are not allowed
As for shedinja, It will obviously get banned

Anyway
Glad our meta made it, We worked a lot in balancing it, And now let's begin with some possible threats

Breloom (Munchlax) @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
New Base Stats: 135/175/60/60/85/40
New Type: Normal/Fighting
Adamant Nature
- Facade
- Bulk Up/Curse
- Drain Punch
- Protect/Spore

For Whoever played AAA, You shall know how powerful this set will be, Hits much harder than normal Snorlax does, Sure it does pay needed bulk but it gets a nice typing, Drain Punch and Bulk Up (Double the PP of curse without decreasing speed), Surely enough you can run curse and run Spore instead of protect, but take care then due to the possibility of being status'ed and also the protect lets you to scout for moves that can OHKO, And insures that you put on Poison, then you can switch out to something else which can take the hit/status

Carracosta (Murkrow) @ White Herb
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
New Base Stats: 80/115/72/115/62/101
New Type: Dark/Flying
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Brave Bird
- Roost
- Earthquake
Let's see, It can boost with Shell Smash, Roost off the damage from the turn it used SS, Then begin sweeping, Roost when necessary then repeat, Pretty basic yet super effective, needs defog/rapid spin support though, and there comes the rule of the coming guy

Milotic (Baltoy) @ Leftovers
Ability: Marvel Scale
New Base Stats: 115/85/114/130/140/56
New Type: Ground/Psychic
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpA / 8 SpD
Modest Nature
- Recover
- Rapid Spin
- Scald
- Earth Power
With 115/114/140 Bulk, 130 SpA and nice Options, there is not much to say about this except tank everything and control the hazards everywhere

Do type changes work in the same way as Mega Aggron in MnM? There it is based on the code, in which Aggron goes from Steel/Rock to Steel/Steel, and as such Aggronite makes mons gain a secondary Steel typing instead of losing their second typing. For an example of how that would apply here, Gloom->Bellossom goes from Grass/Poison to Grass/Grass, and as such mons named Bellossom would gain a secondary Grass typing.

What about primary typing changes? Onix->Steelix goes from Rock/Ground to Steel/Ground, so would mons named Steelix gain Steel primary typings? What if the mon in question was monotyped? Would Ponyta->Steelix go from Fire/Fire to Steel/Fire?

Finally, wholesale type changes. Eevee->Vaporeon goes from Normal/Normal to Water/Water. Would any mon named Vaporeon become pure Water?

Well, The first one is right but the other 2 aren't
As for the Ponyta-->Steelix, It's monotype is considered its typing in which case, It will turn to pure steel

As I said, Monotyped mons will count their main typing as their primary typing so Vaporeon will only change the primary typing of its user to water, So something like gligar will turn from Ground/Flying to Water/Flying (Do not use that, it is terrible :P)

Froslass (Swablu) @ Leftovers
Ability: Cursed Body
New Base Stats: 65/70/80/70/95/110
New Type: Normal/Ghost
EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpDef, 4 Spe
Nature: +SpDef -Atk
-Roost
-Taunt/Toxic
-Cotton Guard
-Shadow Ball
Gets a really great typing with ghost/normal as well as cursed body makes it great tank, even without super good stats. Also gains spikes and taunt on top of already having cotton guard and roost giving it a pretty strong moveset. Really hard to kill and can set up spikes too.

Meet your new favorite rock setter

Clefable (Rhydon) @ Leftovers
Type: Ground/Rock
New Stats: 130/155/145/80/70/65
Ability: Magic Guard / Unaware

EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Soft Boiled / Wish
- Toxic / Protect / Roar

Thats 130/145 Defensive bulk with magic guard or unaware with access to rocks and recovery and a mean base 155 STAB earthquake. Also a great set up check with unaware/roar

I think we might need to ban the Milotic line as well.
We'll consider it after the meta is coded and evolves a bit, if it proves broken, we'll suspect/ban it.

Scolipede(Combusken)@ Focus Sash
Ability: Speed Boost
New Base Stats: 80/130/50/100/50/120
New Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 4 SpD
Jolly Nature
-Protect
-Earthquake
-Superpower
-Flare Blitz
Typing here is Fire/Fighting (Whirlipede -> Scolipede doesn't change types, thus Combusken -> Scolipede stays as a Fire/Fighting).

Also, as you might've noticed, Angry2 is also in charge of the meta and he's the one that made it.

Shouldn't Aipom be nicknamed Togetic? If not, you're jumping from a Stage 1 to a Stage 3.

Also, Aipom-> Togetic would become a Normal/Flying type and have a spread of 75/90/75/80/95/105

ANYWAYS, because I like making lists, here's all the eligible evolutions (ignoring bans) in order of BST change, along with their associated type changes

http://pastebin.com/XD0rN6z5

I thought about also documenting the exact stat changes but holy crap that is a lot of work, you'll have to look them up yourself. On that note, there is an error in the OP with the Dugtrio example, as Dugtrio would only provide +15 SpA, not +25.

Onix ---> Chansey
185 / 45 / 160 / 50 / 85 / 90

252+ Atk Pure Power Mega Medicham High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Onix: 398-470 (69.3 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Not even that bad, as it has solid special bulk as well and is very fast for a wall. Obviously big time taunt bait, but is fast enough to fire off its own taunt as well. With access to SR, Taunt, Toxic, Thunder Wave, reliable recovery, Wish, Heal Bell, Healing Wish, Rain Dance, Sunny Day... could make for a solid support wall.

[Reserving in-depth Donor/base Pokemon analysis megapost]

RIP Jajoken
Reporting Eevee General for double post. Say goodbye to your future analysis.

Also I have a question -- did the OMotM restrictions change to allow nickname-based OMs or was this simply approved but ineligible for the poll?

Otherwise, really inventive metagame! Its essentially the next logical step past Mix and Mega, with even more potential options. Might post some sets later.

sin(pi)

lucky n bad
This seems really cool. Might want to ban Milotic line too, since it's basically the same as Magikarp in terms of the BST boost.

Could I evolve a stage 2 such as Rapidash (that doesn't normally evolve further) into a stage 3, eg Charizard? I don't think it would make sense (and it'd make for some silly things like evolving Bisharp into Gallade for base 215 attack), but I want to clarify that.
Also, can you evolve into your own line? This would help with move illegalities (think weather ball Venusaur), or with stuff like weight (Wooper takes less from Grass Knot than Quagsire)

----
Various thoughts (spoilered because it's kinda long, and focusing on offensive strategies):
Talonflame is now outclassed by Murkrow cross-evolving into Fletchinder, Krow gets BB and Sucker Punch already, and can take things like Overheat and Wisp.

Dragonite is a superb donor, it gives 180 BST, Multiscale, and a ridiculous movepool including reliable recovery and Extreme Speed. Doublade, for example, gets stats of 89/160/180/75/79/45, with Roost, Multiscale, and Skamory's typing, allowing it to perform a multitude of roles.

Linoone donates Bellyspeed, though the rest of its movepool is trash and it doesn't have a good ability. Munchlax, Rufflet and Doduo can make decent use of this.

Arcanine gives a BST increase of 205, Intimidate/Flash Fire (ferroseed?), semi reliable recovery in Morning Sun, Espeed, and some okay coverage. Intimidate Munchlax or Teddiursa with Bellyspeed, anyone? (Teddiursa has usable speed and better coverage, but is frailer.)

Serperior gives Contrary, so things like Grovyle, Magmar (Overheat), Sliggoo (Draco), Gurdurr (Superpower) can abuse that. Malamar also gives Contrary, this time with a BST increase of nearly 200.

Bugs are pretty cool. A lot of them gain a lot of BST on evolving, or else have great abilities that would be broken elsewhere:
Volcarona gives 190 BST, eighty-five points of which is special attack. You even get Quiver Dance and Roost - Magmar loves this.

Yanmega gives Speed Boost, Tinted Lens, and some cool coverage. Ninjask also gives 120 Speed along with Speed boost, in case you ever wanted to see Slowpoke outspeed Crobat, or Voltorb outspeed - well, everything.

Forretress and Escavalier both grant a secondary Steel typing along with 160+ BST and some reasonably cool moves. Accelgor gives 60 SpA and 120 Speed, with a decent movepool (pivoting, okay coverage, and lots of support).

Masquerain gives an annoying Flying type, but Intimidate, Quiver Dance, Roost, Scald, and decent stats.

Mothim and Venomoth give Tinted Lens + Quiver Dance (with Sleep Powder in the latter's case), Venomoth gives 145 BST while Mothim gives 180, including 64 in each attack. They face competition from Butterfree, who gives 190 BST including a large amount of special bulk, as well as the Flying type.
- Speaking of Tinted Lens, Noctowl gives it alongside 180 BST and a bunch of mainly support moves (Roost, Defog, etc)

Kricketune gives 190 BST (60 in Attack), Sticky Web, and Technician. Could make for a cool suicide lead on HO, or give Fraxure an incredibly strong Dual Chop.

Crawdaunt and Dragalge offer Adaptability, with solid typing changes and good BST boosts. Dragalge is more suited to tanks while Crawdaunt benefits mixed attackers.

Dugtrio gives 25/25/25/15/25/25 and Arena Trap, but had to donate to a LC mon. Swirlix could be interesting, between Cotton Guard, Calm Mind and Belly Drum it isn't lacking for setup.

Magnets and Probopass give Magnet Pull. You probably don't want to cross-evolve into 'zone, it's only an increase of 70 BST and you actually get slower. LC Fire- and Fighting- types are probably your best bet.

Drifblim gives Flare Boost, which is essentially a special version of Guts. It also gives Weather Ball for weather teams if you want, and some cool support moves.

Zoroark, obviously, gives Illusion. It ALSO gives 180 BST (20/40/20/40/20/40), and a pretty strong movepool, including lots of boosting, U-turn, Pursuit, SPunch, and Memento. Pursuit+Memento could open the way up to an Espeed sweep?

Clawitzer gives Mega Launcher, 62 SpA, and all of the Pulse moves bar Origin. Gastly seems like a great recipient with 162 SpA, 95 speed (fast enough to run a scarf, though it's too frail to run anything else), and perfect "STAB" coverage in Ghost/Fighting, with DPulse to hit any Normal/Ghosts if that typing becomes possible.

Excadrill gives a Steel type and 180 BST, and we all know what it does otherwise. The other Moldy mons probably prefer sharing other abilities (Ramp, mainly).

Sylveon donates Pixilate. Depending on how type changing works, Taillow could be a cool Pixilate Boomburst nuke with a usable base 95 SpA and 90 speed. Abra/Solosis both get 170 SpA Hyper Voice (borrowing the move from Sylveon) though, which is probably better.

Aurorus also donates -ateVoice, along with a cool support movepool and more mixed bulk, but far less power.

Breloom is basically nuts. PH or Technician as abilities, 90 attack, 35 speed, Spore, and Mach Punch, there's something for (nearly) everything.

Whimsicott's 200 BST boost is great for Prankster, it's more offensively oriented but still. Other options are Liepard and Meowstic, the latter offering screens.

Mainly for Head Smash; your main donors are Rhydon, Mienshao, Staraptor, Tyrantrum, and Hitmonlee. The last two of these are the most notable imo, alongside Cranidos - Tyrantrum makes it a good Scarfer (basically just a much stronger Tyrantrum), while Hitmonlee gives it 210 base attack(!), 110 base speed, HJK, Sucker Punch, and special bulk almost as good as Latios. That's frankly terrifying.

Hariyama gives 237 BST by doubling Makuhita's stats, it also has Belly Drum for overkill. Darmanitan is an option for its wide movepool and better speed, too. Both Nidos have obscene movepool and gain 140 BST identically - so it's about movepool.

Swoobat, Bibarel. Both give decent BST boosts, but Bibarel lacks a way to boost (lol curse) and recovery, so you'll need that yourself

Cloyster, Ambipom, Cincinno. Cincinno is probably the best of these, though Cloyster gets Shell Smash.

Pretty much just Hitmontop, Breloom, Roserade, and Kricketune, tbh. Everything else is bad or outclassed.

Cloyster, Omastar, Huntail/Gorebyss, Crustle, Carracosta, Barbacle. Costa is outclassed unless you NEED priority, Omastar doesn't really do anything better than Gorebyss bar Earth Power. Barbacle is probably the scariest, with TC and +50 attack.

I'm not going to go through every single abuser, but Sand looks nuts, and I'm pretty sure Rain is too (Politoed makes for a nice Drizzle donor).

Magmar, Electabuzz, Doublade, Kadabra, Haunter, Magneton, P2, Combusken, Tangela, Misdreavus, and Gligar are going to be the primary picks for cross-evolving. Imagine Quiver Dance MegaZam with 185 SpA, 160 Speed, 130 SpDef, Tinted Lens, and Sleep Powder, that can hold an item. That's what Kadabra-free looks like.

HUGE BST boost, Boomburst, great coverage, Roost, what more do you want? Abilities suck, but who cares?

Again, a massive BST boost, and literally every form of boosting under the sun, as well as Espeed. Abilities aren't much, but again, who cares?

210 BST, 99 of which is in defence. Good luck breaking through Mantyke's 85/149/131 bulk now, or Munchlax's 135/139/96.

I'm assuming Chansey will be barred from cross-evolving if its HP exceeds 255. This restricts it greatly, but there's still one viable donor (credits to AJA) - Slowbro. Chansey gets 255/15/50/95/145/65 stats, and regenerator. This makes it much bulkier physically, less reliant on its item, and gives it an actual offensive presence, making Scald usable, or even CM/Iron Defense sets.

I also want to talk about cross-evolving into Chansey. This is a gain of 150/0/0/20/40/20 for LC mons only; something like Porygon gets stats of 215/60/70/105/115/60 with Serene Grace Tri Attack, or Spritzee with the coveted Fairy typing and stats of 228/52/60/83/105/43. Hell, Gligar gets 215/75/105/55/105/105, while Tangela gets 215/55/115/120/80/80, and all of these have recovery.

I haven't looked much into defensive abilities such as Unaware (both Quag and Clef look silly), Magic Bounce (Espeon), or Regen (Amoongus, Slowbro/king).

also pls ban Wonder Guard holy shit, yes you lose 30 HP and 45 Def and only gain 45 Atk and a Ghost typing, but plsno - try breaking Lickitung/Porygon which is only weak to Dark, for example, or Scraggy only weak to Fairy.

I'd suggest just banning the borked abilities, rather than evolving into a Pokémon - cross-evolving into, say, Sap Sipper Azu could be pretty cool on something that wants Belly Drum or Aqua Jet.

edit: some of this has been said already, and sorry TEG :p

Reporting Eevee General for double post. Say goodbye to your future analysis.

Also I have a question -- did the OMotM restrictions change to allow nickname-based OMs or was this simply approved but ineligible for the poll?

Otherwise, really inventive metagame! Its essentially the next logical step past Mix and Mega, with even more potential options. Might post some sets later.
It is approved but it is (sadly) ineligible for being Omotm
I consider that a loss but there is nothing I can really do about that

Various thoughts (spoilered because it's kinda long, and focusing on offensive strategies):
Talonflame is now outclassed by Murkrow cross-evolving into Fletchinder, Krow gets BB and Sucker Punch already, and can take things like Overheat and Wisp.

Thanks for the nice post, Also Shedinja is now officially banned and Clefable/Quagsire are actually viable donors with nice stats and movepool, Not all appreciates the movepool due to it being based on its roles mainly, but some greatly appreciate it
