pushing this through QC and going straight for the write-up as per irc bidness/mantyke and i looked it over/i'm the best and the fact that these analyses need to be done quickly. shroomer isn't a complicated mon anyway.

Overview
########

Amoonguss is used for redirection and the useful sleep-inducing Spore. Thanks to its useful resistances to Fighting, Fairy, Electric, and Water, it can redirect key attacks, and its low Speed makes it a good check to Trick Room. It suffers from being a Grass-type in a metagame where Mega Salamence, Mega Charizard Y, and Talonflame exist, along with easily accessible checks such as Taunt and Safety Goggles nullifying its key moves, but Amoonguss still manages to perform well in spite of these factors, which goes to show how useful a guaranteed sleep-inducing move and redirection are.

Rage Powder
########
name: Rage Powder
move 1: Rage Powder
move 2: Spore
move 3: Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb
move 4: Protect
ability: Regenerator
item: Sitrus Berry / Rocky Helmet
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Relaxed

Moves
========

Spore and Rage Powder are what Amoonguss is known for, as they are superb at creating safe options for its partners by putting a threat to sleep or redirecting a threatening attack. Giga Drain helps restore Amoonguss's HP and helps it check Pokemon such as Rotom-W, while Sludge Bomb is useful for hitting Fairy-, Grass-, and Flying-types such as Sylveon, other Amoonguss, and Thundurus for much better damage. Protect is a staple move in VGC and helps dissuade the opponent from double targeting Amoonguss carelessly.

Set Details
========

Maximum Defense investment is recommended because of how physically oriented the metagame is, as shown by the top threats being Pokemon such as Mega Kangaskhan and Landorus-T. More specially defensive Amoonguss are usable depending on your team, and it's recommended that you customize your EV spreads according to your team. Negative Speed natures are preferred to underspeed Pokemon under Trick Room, which is useful to check opposing Trick Room teams, even if you're not using it yourself. Neutral Speed natures are also acceptable to outspeed slower Pokemon such as Aegislash and Spore them before they attack. 68 Speed EVs with a Bold nature let Amoonguss outspeed Quiet Aegislash, and more Speed EVs can be used for other threats, but bear in mind Amoonguss isn't going to outspeed much of anything considering its base 30 Speed.

Sitrus Berry is the preferred item to allow Amoonguss to take in more hits with Rage Powder, but it can be replaced with Black Sludge or Leftovers if another Pokemon needs it more (keeping in mind Item Clause). Rocky Helmet is useful for getting damage off on physical attackers, most notably Mega Kangaskhan, which loses a third of its health when it attacks Amoonguss.

Usage Tips
========

You should focus on using Spore and Rage Powder and Protecting when Amoonguss is immediately threatened. Keep in mind that you can switch out to restore health with Regenerator, which makes conserving Amoonguss after it takes a beating much more advantageous. Attacking with Amoonguss isn't ideal unless it gets Taunted and would rather not or can't switch out, unless you think you can break a Focus Sash or grab a KO against a severely weakened Pokemon. Also keep in mind that allowing Amoonguss to faint for a greater cause, such as getting Mega Kangaskhan to +2 or setting up Trick Room, isn't something to strictly avoid.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss does well with just about anything that doesn't share too many of its weaknesses. Examples are Mega Kangaskhan, Terrakion, and Heatran, as Amoonguss resists most if not all of their weaknesses. Trick Room Pokemon such as Jellicent also enjoy Amoonguss's company, especially because Amoonguss is often the slowest Pokemon on the field, which means it can outspeed and Spore anything without a Grass typing or Safety Goggles. Amoonguss also works well with or against rain teams, as they remove its Fire weakness and often have Water-types. Intimidate also allows Amoonguss to survive attacks such as Talonflame's Brave Bird, making it more useful to sponge hits. Gyarados is a prime example, but of course just about anything appreciates having Amoonguss around.

Other Options
########

Foul Play does good damage to physical attackers such as Mega Metagross, but it leaves Amoonguss unable to get clean damage off on Pokemon it walls, such as Rotom-W, and attacking with Amoonguss isn't something to plan for. Occa Berry and Coba Berry alleviate Amoonguss's weaknesses, as does Mental Herb for Taunt, making them good filler items to reach for if Amoonguss's other options are taken by its teammates. Effect Spore is outclassed by Regenerator not only because of the loss in potential healing, but also because it can get in the way of Sporing something important if Effect Spore doesn't put them to sleep itself.

Checks & Counters
########

**Flying-types**: Talonflame and Mega Salamence can OHKO with Brave Bird and Return or Double-Edge, respectively, and Talonflame can even Taunt Amoonguss to let it waste turns by Giga Draining.

**Fire-types**: Mega Charizard Y can easily OHKO Amoonguss with a sun-boosted Heat Wave to ignore Rage Powder. Heatran is equally threatening, though it often can't outright OHKO Amoonguss without Overheat. Rotom-H can Overheat as well, and it's not too uncommon to see it hold Safety Goggles strictly to counter Amoonguss.

**Strong Attackers**: Mega Metagross, Latios, and Choice Specs Hydreigon are but a few Pokemon that threaten OHKOs on Amoonguss. Helping Hand support or strong multi-target moves such as Blizzard and non-STAB Heat Wave are good tools to consider. It's also worth mentioning that Sky Drop is not only super effective, but allows the user's partner to attack unimpeded by Rage Powder.

**Taunt**: The most generally useful Taunt users are Gengar and Thundurus. Other niche Pokemon with Taunt include Virizion, which ignores powder moves thanks to its Grass typing, as well as Gothitelle and Mega Gengar, which can trap a Taunted Amoonguss and focus on its partner.

**Safety Goggles/Substitute/Overcoat**: Safety Goggles ignores Rage Powder and Spore, making it a good item to slap on a team that is weak to Amoonguss's antics. Overcoat is basically the same thing as Safety Goggles in ability form, though it's relatively rare, with the notable users being Escavalier and Reuniclus. Substitute doesn't ignore Rage Powder, but it blocks Spore and is in general a solid move, with the notable users being Heatran and Aegislash.

Overview
########

-redirection is cool
-spore is cool
-resistances are cool
-nerfed and doesn't work as well vs other grass types
-still an ace mon

Rage Powder
########
name: Rage Powder
move 1: Rage Powder
move 2: Spore
move 3: Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb
move 4: Protect
ability: Regenerator
item: Sitrus Berry / Rocky Helmet
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Relaxed

Moves
========

-spore for sleeps
-rage powder for redirection
-protect
-giga drain for waters/ground (rotom-w)
-sludge bomb for fairy-types/grassers/flying-types (sylveon/other amoonguss/ Genies)

Set Details
========

-amoonguss's best set. you're gonna be using powders most often; giga drain/sludge bomb are just there to make sure you're not taunt bait or a sitting duck vs. saftey goggles/grassers
-max defense b/c the meta's biggets hits are physical (kang, lol). a more specially defensive set would be sassy @ 252 hp / 132 def / 124 spd to live specs hydreigon fire blast.
-speed hindering natures are best to allow shroomer to underspeed stuff in trick room. this is useful to check opposing trick room, even if you're not using it and theres not much merit in trying to outspeed other shroomers anymore.
-neutral speed natures could be used to outspeed and spore certain things though. 68 speed outspeeds -speed aegislash. more speed than that for tailwind could be used but outspeeding things takes a lot of EVs since shroomer only has a 30 base speed.
-sitrus is for instant recovery, rocky helmet is to punish physical attackers and to laugh at kang. black sludge can also be used for a healing item b/c item clause.

Usage Tips
========

-attacking is overrated. use spore and rage powder mainly with protect every now and then just to make sure you can keep using spore and rage powder
-switching is also nice to get regenerator health back, especially if you're not using giga drain and/or a healing item

Team Options
========

-kang, heatran, terrakion, stuff like that. Things that appreciate the resistances Grass and Poison bring
-trick room setters like jellicent and chandelure (don't be too defensive though)
-teams that are weak to trick room and/or rain like having amoonguss around
-p. much everyone likes to have amoonguss around. he's kind of a fungi.

Other Options
########

-effect spore - punishes physical attackers and eats lum berries SOMETIMES but gets in the way of sporing things.
-occa berry/coba berry/mental herb - circumvent certain weaks
-foul play - does good damage to physical attackers but rocky helmet does that already sort of (and it's dependant on the opp team sorta)
-stun spore - speed control, but gets in the way of spore, is inaccurate, and shroomer needs all of its moveslots generally

Checks & Counters
########

-flyers: talonflame, megamence
-fires: charizard-y, heatran, rotom-h
-other mons that can ohko it: megagross, specs hydreigon/latios
-taunt: thund, gengar, niche stuff like chesnaught/virizion
-substitute: blocks spore, shroomer struggles to break some subs on its own, making it difficult for partners to deal with certain things. aegislash, heatran
-saftey goggles: follow me+saftey goggles poops on spore, goggs+strong attacker bypasses rage powder (zapdos, lucario, terrakion). overcoat does the same thing as goggs (reuniclus, escavalier)

I would mention somewhere that things like Heat Wave and other moves that hit 2 Pokemon ignore Rage Powder meaning that the whole premise of the set is countered, i.e. letting a teammate set up without taking damage. In fact I would even go as far as to give it a slot in C&C seeing as those types of moves beat the rage powder.

Edit: ah I guess I missed them on my read through, I would still make a mention in usage tips to watch out for those moves when using rage powder to let a team mate setup.

**Safety Goggles/Substitute/Overcoat**: Saftey Safety Goggles ignores Rage Powder and Spore, making it a good item to slap on a team if it's weak to Amoonguss's antics. Overcoat is basically the same thing as Saftey Safety Goggles in Ability form, though it's relatively rare with the notable users being Escavalier and Reuniclus. Substitute doesn't ignore Rage Powder, but blocks Spore and is in general a solid move, with the notable users being Heatran and Aegislash.

Overview
########

Amoonguss is used for redirection and the useful sleep-inducing Spore. Thanks to its useful resistances to Fighting, Fairy, Electric, and Water, it can redirect key attacks, (comma) and its low Speed makes it a good useful to check to Trick Room. It suffers from being a Grass-type in a metagame where Mega Salamence, Mega Charizard Y, (comma) and Talonflame exist, along with easily accessible checks such as Taunt and Safety Goggles nullifying its key moves, but Amoonguss still manages to perform well in spite of these factors, which goes to show how useful a guaranteed sleep-inducing move and redirection are.

Rage Powder
########
name: Rage Powder
move 1: Rage Powder
move 2: Spore
move 3: Giga Drain / Sludge Bomb
move 4: Protect
ability: Regenerator
item: Sitrus Berry / Rocky Helmet
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
nature: Relaxed

Moves
========

Spore and Rage Powder are what Amoonguss is known for, as they are superb at creating safe options for its partners by putting a threat to sleep or redirecting a threatening attack. Giga Drain helps restore Amoonguss's HP and helps it check Pokemon such as Rotom-W, (comma) while Sludge Bomb is useful for hitting Fairy-, Grass-, and Flying-types such as Sylveon, other Amoonguss, and Thundurus for much better damage. Protect is a staple move in VGC, (remove comma) and helps dissuade the opponent from double targeting Amoonguss carelessly.

Set Details
========

Maximum Defense investment is recommended because of how physically oriented the metagame is, as shown by with the top threats being Pokemon such as Mega Kangaskhan and Landorus-T.

Sitrus Berry is the preferred item to allow Amoonguss to take in more hits with Rage Powder, and but it can be replaced with Black Sludge or Leftovers if another Pokemon needs it more (keeping in mind Item Clause). Rocky Helmet is useful for getting damage off on physical attackers, most notably Mega Kangaskhan, (comma) which loses a third of its health when it attacks Amoonguss.

Usage Tips
========

You should focus on using Spore and Rage Powder and Protecting when Amoonguss is immediately threatened. Keep in mind that you can switch out to restore health with Regenerator, which makes conserving Amoonguss after it takes a beating much more advantageous. Attacking with Amoonguss isn't ideal unless it gets Taunted and would rather not/ or can't switch out, unless you think you can break a Focus Sash or grab a KO against a severely weakened Pokemon. Also keep in mind that allowing Amoonguss to faint for a greater cause, (comma) such as getting a Mega Kangaskhan to +2 or setting up Trick Room, (comma) isn't something to strictly avoid.

Team Options
========

Amoonguss does well with just about anything that doesn't share too many of its weaknesses. Examples are Mega Kangaskhan, Terrakion, and Heatran, as Amoonguss resists most if not all of their weaknesses. Trick Room Pokemon such as Jellicent also enjoy Amoonguss's company, especially because Amoonguss is often the slowest Pokemon on the field, which means it can outspeed and Spore anything without a Grass typing (remove dash) or Safety Goggles.

########

Foul Play does good damage to physical attackers such as Mega Metagross, but it (either add this, or take out the comma before it) leaves Amoonguss unable to get clean damage off on Pokemon it walls, such as Rotom-W, and attacking with Amoonguss isn't something to plan for.

########

**Flying-types**: Mega Salamence and Talonflame and Mega Salamence (the order didn't match Brave Bird/Return) are both examples of Pokemon that can OHKO with Brave Bird and Return or /Double-Edge, (comma) respectively, and Talonflame can even Taunt Amoonguss to let it waste turns by Giga Draining.

Other niche Pokemon with Taunt include Virizion, which ignores powder moves thanks to its Grass typing (remove dash), as well as Gothitelle and Mega Gengar, which can trap a Taunted Amoonguss and focus on its partner.

**Safety Goggles/Substitute/Overcoat**: Safety Goggles ignores Rage Powder and Spore, making it a good item to slap on a team if it's that is weak to Amoonguss's antics. Overcoat is basically the same thing as Safety Goggles in ability form, though it's relatively rare, (comma) with the notable users being Escavalier and Reuniclus. Substitute doesn't ignore Rage Powder, but it blocks Spore and is in general a solid move, with the notable users being Heatran and Aegislash.
